SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Disability in Higher Education\"
DESCRIPTION:You're invited to this special virtual seminar that will highlight the plight of those with disabilities in higher education and discuss what may be done to develop different disability imaginary of the future. Register at https://bit.ly/3S8gFiQ\n\nAbstract\nFrom statistics we know that disclosure rates amongst postgraduate research students in higher education are much lower than in the general population or amongst undergraduate students\, and that academic staff are even less likely to disclose needs. However\, there is no evidence that invisible disabilities are less prevalent in higher education. \n\nIn this presentation\, Nicole will draw on her extensive research to highlight the plight of those with disabilities\, chronic illnesses and/or neurodivergences in higher education. She will commence with an introduction to the definitional difficulties of \"disability\" as a term\, before exploring some of the issues individuals encounter. She will then present her concept of looking at disclosure as a cost-benefit analysis to gradually ease delegates into what may be done to develop a somewhat different disability imaginary of the future.\n\nBio\nDr. Nicole Brown is Director of Social Research & Practice and Education Ltd and Associate Professor at University College London. Nicole's creative and research work relate to physical and material representations of experiences\, the generation of knowledge and use of metaphors to express what is difficult to express\, and more generally\, research methods and approaches to explore identity and body work. Her books include Lived Experiences of Ableism in Academia: Strategies for Inclusion in Higher Education\, Ableism in Academia: Theorising Experiences of Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses in Higher Education\, Embodied Inquiry: Research Methods\, and Making the Most of Your Research Journal. Her next book is Photovoice\, Reimagined. Nicole's creative nonfiction has been published in the Journal of Participatory Research Methods\, So Fi Zine and The AutoEthnographer. She tweets as @ncjbrown and @AbleismAcademia

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | *Kaze to tomo ni sarinu* as *jidai shōsetsu*: The 1938 Japanese Translation of *Gone With the Wind*
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/7eGgQ\n\nMy talk examines the second most popular Japanese publication of the twentieth century\, Ōkubo Yasuo's translation of *Gone With the Wind*. I argue that the translation itself and its initial publicity campaign tapped into popular representations of the Meiji Restoration\, particularly portraits of the infamous Shinsengumi. This association subtly links Margaret Mitchell's romanticized depiction of the Confederate rebellion with fascistic calls for a Shōwa Restoration in the 1930s.\n \n U-M alumnus Jim Reichert is an associate professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University. His area of specialization is modern Japanese literature. He has written on representations of male-male sexuality in Meiji-era literature\, silent Japanese film\, 19th-century illustrated books\, newspaper novels\, and the role of fetishism in the writing of Tanizaki Jun’ichirō. He is currently finishing up a manuscript on prewar Japanese period fiction.\n\nThis lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Evolution Evolving: Mechanistic Origins of Evolvability
DESCRIPTION:To thrive in a changing world\, evolving populations must be able to generate variants adapted to future environments. In one environmental state\, however\, there is no direct selection pressure on a population to make adaptive variation more accessible. Whether natural selection can drive evolving organisms to manifest this adaptive variation\, and become more evolvable\, is widely debated. Using a simple instance of evolution\, we show that evolvability is favoured when a population evolves in a changing environment. We also highlight a novel mechanism through which populations evolve to access relatively higher amounts of adaptive variation under these conditions. This mechanism is not sufficiently explained by natural selection but is rather a combination of deterministic selection dynamics and stochastic search of the genotype space during evolution. Thus\, we demonstrate that evolvability can and does evolve\, and could play an important role in the adaptation of living systems to a changing environment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar: Workplace Socialization in the Aerospace Engineering Profession
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Ahn \nAssociate Professor \nDepartment of Engineering Education \nThe Ohio State University\n\nAbout the seminar:\nEvery year newly graduated engineers enter the aerospace workforce to begin their careers. New engineers are expected to go through a socialization process in order to participate effectively in their new workplace. Examples of socialization include understanding their roles and responsibilities and identifying their workplace culture and norms. My research team studied the socialization process of recently hired aerospace engineers. Specifically\, we examined socialization actions initiated by both new engineers (i.e.\, proactive behaviors) and their companies (i.e.\, organizational tactics) as a way for the new engineers to socialize into their companies. We also investigated the associations between socialization actions and new engineers’ socialization outcomes. Our findings showed that new engineers frequently relied on social interactions (e.g.\, networking and relationship building with managers) to adjust to their job position and organization\, and often socialized through engaging in organizational tactics more than by practicing proactive behaviors. These results suggest that new engineers’ engagement in social interaction is a critical component that predicts their positive socialization outcomes in their new work environment. Our study findings contribute to understanding the onboarding process of recently graduated engineers entering aerospace engineering companies and offer implications for effective ways to support new engineers’ socialization into their new workplaces. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nBenjamin Ahn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Education at The Ohio State University. His research focuses on improving engineering education in classrooms and research settings. His research interests include (1) investigating the actions of recently-hired engineers during their onboarding period as well as the critical professional skills needed by 21st century engineers\, (2) examining the mentoring practices that enhance engineering students’ ability to inquire\, investigate\, and make data-driven decisions\, and (3) exploring mechanisms to teach technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to engineering undergraduate students. Benjamin received a Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University\, an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University\, and a B.E. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of New South Wales (Australia). Prior to joining The Ohio State University\, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alumni of the Year: Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Named the U-M Climate & Space Alumni of the Year\, Dr. Shannon Brown\, principal technologist and the supervisor of the microwave instrument science group at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, will give a seminar on Thursday\, Nov. 17. A reception will follow the seminar\, which is part of the U-M Climate & Space Seminar Series.\n\nPlease join us! The talk will also be streamed live and recorded via Zoom. For details\, visit the CLASP Seminar Series webpage.\n\nAbstract:\nInstrument science bridges the fields of science and engineering and it’s where I’ve found myself since graduating from Michigan nearly two decades ago. The art is translating the discoveries scientists want to make into the instruments engineers can build (and launch into space). This talk will reminisce on my nearly two decades of research and instrument development of passive microwave radiometer systems at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.\n\nGetting from the tiniest nugget of an idea to a full-fledged science mission in space requires persistence\, agile thinking and a bit of luck. Space-based missions generally follow a familiar pattern\; the initial honeymoon period where anything is possible\, building hardware where nothing seems possible and finally science operations where no one expected what was possible. Each of these phases is unique\, immensely interesting and the instrument scientist is one of only a few project jobs that spans all three. I’ll share a mix of stories and science from inside the development of the NASA Juno mission and the US Space Force Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer (COWVR) mission. Both of these missions had unique challenges. COWVR was a 2-year instrument development that took 10-years to get into space\, finally landing on the International Space Station in 2022. Juno had to be designed to survive the harsh Jovian environment. But once they reached their destination in space\, they have been changing our understanding of Jupiter and its moons and demonstrating revolutionary technology back here on Earth. Getting there is never easy nor follows a linear predictable path\, but that is what makes it so\ninteresting.\n\nShannon T. Brown is a principle technologist and supervisor of microwave instrument science group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena\, CA. He received a B.S degree in Meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University and a M.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Michigan. He received a Ph.D. in Geoscience and Remote Sensing in 2005\, also from the University of Michigan under the advisement of Professor Christopher Ruf. His research interests include microwave radiometer instrument design\, calibration and algorithm development for spaceborne and airborne instruments. He has been involved with the spaceborne Topex and Jason Microwave Radiometers\, WindSat Polarimetric Radiometer and the Jason follow-on Advanced Microwave Radiometers on Jason-2/3\, Sentinel-6 and SWOT along with a number of airborne radiometers. He is the instrument scientist for the NASA Juno Microwave Radiometer and principal investigator for the US Space Force Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer instrument that is deployed on the International Space Station.

SUMMARY:Other:A Designer's Toolkit for Constructing Complex Nanoparticle Libraries
DESCRIPTION:Nanoparticles that contain multiple materials combine different properties in a single construct\, enabling both multi-functionality and the emergence of new synergistic functions. Synthesizing such multi-component nanoparticles requires simultaneous control over size\, shape\, composition\, and structure\, as well as interfaces and spatial arrangements. We have been developing two complementary strategies for synthesizing multi-component nanoparticles. The first approach involves heterogeneous seeded growth\, where interfaces and asymmetry are introduced by sequentially growing new nanoparticles off of the surfaces of existing nanoparticles. Complex hybrid nanoparticles of a growing number of materials\, configurations\, and morphologies can now be synthesized. The second approach involves sequential partial cation exchange reactions\, where interfaces and asymmetry are introduced by compositional modifications that are made within an existing nanoparticle. A growing library of complex heterostructured metal sulfide nanoparticles can now be rationally designed and then readily synthesized. \n \n \n \n \nRaymond Schaak (The Pennsylvania State University)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: An Ambivalent History: Blackness and Homosexuality in the Post-World War II Political Imaginary
DESCRIPTION:Between 2003 and 2015\, various media outlets perpetuated comparisons between the intensifying movement for marriage equality and the Modern Civil Rights Movement. Using these comparisons as a starting point\, this talk interrogates the ambivalent history of Blackness and homosexuality as mutually referential concepts in American politics from the end of World War II through the 1980s. In doing so\, this talk offers a queer political history that troubles popular and historiographical stories we tell about postwar gay and lesbian rights movements\, Black freedom struggles and polyvocal opposition to both. \n\nJennifer Dominique Jones is an assistant professor of history and women's and gender studies at the University of Michigan. Her areas of research and teaching expertise are African American history after 1877 and the history of gender and sexuality in the United States in the twentieth century with a focus on lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) politics and community life. Her forthcoming monograph is Ambivalent Affinities: A Political History of Blackness and Homosexuality After World War II (University of North Carolina Press). \n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Parallel Heat-bath Configuration Interaction*\n\nThe heat-bath configuration interaction (HBCI) method is a deterministic wave function method that approaches the full CI limit at greatly reduced cost. HBCI consists of two parts: the generation of a variational wave function\, followed by a perturbative correction. This work introduces a parallel implementation that is highly scalable and overcomes the memory bottleneck of perturbation theory. The implementation demonstrates 83% parallel efficiency for the perturbative step on 32 nodes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sir Alex Halliday to give special lecture
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to have our past faculty colleague Prof. Alex Halliday visiting the University of Michigan on Thursday\, Nov. 17th. He is currently the Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Founding Dean of the Columbia Climate School.\n\nWhen Alex was at Michigan (1986-1998)\, he performed the first isotopic measurements that constrained the timing of Earth’s core formation and made the link to the giant impact event that formed our Moon. In 2000\, he coined the term “Theia” for the Mars-sized impactor that struck the Earth early in its history. Alex has continued his research into Earth’s origins and will be giving a talk on this subject on Thursday\, Nov. 17th at 4:00 p.m. in 1400 Chemistry Building. It is entitled\, “New uncertainties around Earth’s origins”.\n\nAlex has received numerous honors and awards in recognition of his scientific contributions. These include the Bowen Award and Hess Medal from the American Geophysical Union\, the Urey Medal of the European Association of Geochemistry\, among others. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).\n\n Alex is a superb speaker and has a compelling scientific story to tell – please encourage all of the graduate students\, postdocs and research scientists in your group (irrespective of your sub-fields) to come to his talk! \n\nALSO: Alex will be hosting a round-table Q&A (refreshments will be provided) on the Climate School at Columbia University. For everyone in your research group (and students in your classes) who are interested in climate-related research and initiatives\, please attend! All are welcome! It will be held in Room 2540 from 2:00-3:15 p.m. in North University Building.\n\nThanks to all for spreading the word (and for making every effort to attend his lecture)!!!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spatial transcriptomics and cell-free nucleic acids to map host-microbe interactions
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDespite the centrality of microbes to human health\, we know very little about how microbes interact with each other and their host. This lack of understanding is in large part due to limitations of tools to measure host-microbe interaction. In the first part of this talk\, I will present liquid biopsy technologies to profile host-microbe interaction\, with applications in the monitoring of COVID-19 and MIS-C. In the second part of this talk\, I will share how we have used spatial transcriptomics to study the pathogenesis of viral myocarditis\, and I will present a method to create intricate spatial maps of complex microbial communities.\n\nBio:\nIwijn De Vlaminck is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Cornell University. Iwijn’s research is focused on the development of precision medicine technologies to monitor and study infectious and immune related disease. His research has led to noninvasive liquid biopsies to diagnose organ transplant rejection\, urinary tract infection\, blood-borne infection and complications of stem cell transplantation. He developed methods to spatially map the microbiome and the transcriptome. Iwijn’s research was recognized with the NIH New Innovator Award\, the Noyce Foundation Assistant Professorship in the Life Sciences\, and a Rainin Foundation Synergy Award. He received teaching excellence awards from the College of Engineering in 2017 and 2022. He is a co-founder of Kanvas Biosciences.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Escritura tras la persona: Lectura Fácil

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:De La Torre Brothers - Collidoscope: A Retro-Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Collaborating artists and brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre have developed their signature style of mixed-media work with blown-glass sculpture and lenticular printing through years of working together. Their pieces represent a multifaceted view of life that reflects a complex and humorous aesthetic that could be seen as baroque. Their influences range from religious iconography to German expressionism\, and they often pay homage to Mexican vernacular arts and pre-Columbian art.\nOrganized in partnership by the Smithsonian&#039\;s National Museum of the American Latino with Riverside Art Museum\, their current exhibition\, \"Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective\" is on view at the newly opened Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art &amp\; Culture in Riverside\, California. After closing January 22\, 2023\, the exhibition will embark on a national tour. The exhibition features more than 70 mixed-media works\, including blown-glass sculptures and installation art\, plus some of the artists’ latest lenticulars with imagery that changes as the viewer moves from side to side. Including \"Collidoscope\,\" the brothers have had 19 solo museum exhibitions in six different countries\, completed eight major public art projects\, and have participated in four biennales.\nBorn and raised Guadalajara\, México until their family moved to California in 1972\, the brothers now live and work on both sides of the border (Ensenada\, Baja California\, México and San Diego\, California). They both studied at California State University at Long Beach and taught at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood\, Washington. Their work is represented in numerous public and private collections\, including the Cheech Marin Collection. The brothers are recipients of the USA Fellowship Award\, the San Diego Art Prize\, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award\, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award\, among other honors. The de la Torre brothers are represented by Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Seattle\, Washington.
