SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Building the Whole Black Child: Facilitating Engineering with Respect to Culture
DESCRIPTION:Engineering education intentionally excludes and pushes out learners who do not uphold traditional Eurocentric standards for thinking and practice of the profession. Facilitators who uphold such standards gatekeep the discipline and perpetuate the marginalization of racially and ethnically diverse youth when they do not orient the learners’ cultures in their teaching and practices. Oftentimes\, to obtain academic and professional achievement\, facilitators encourage Black youth seeking entry into the engineering pathway to suppress their culture\, linguistic literacy and practice\, and history. Given the educational debt that persists in K-12 education for Black American youth\, meaningful culturally oriented facilitation is crucial as it often determines whether a learner may persist or perish along their engineering pursuit. Most importantly\, the culturally informed engineering facilitator has the power to extract the brilliance and ingenuity that Black youth bring into the engineering classroom. In this talk\, I discuss the significance of a culturally centered engineering facilitator on Black American youth’s engineering learning. Founded on asset-focused culturally relevant and sustaining frameworks\, I explain how the ethos\, beliefs\, and training of a multifaceted facilitator influenced engineering learning and practice for Black youth at an interdisciplinary summer camp within an urban creative arts community learning center— Hit Makers Summer Camp. I also detail how culturally relevant and sustaining facilitation guided Black youth to rationalize their place in engineering. Finally\, I discuss implications for educational research\, teaching\, and professional development for engineering educators and initial steps on how the Engineering Education Research community could implement initial policies that maximize cultural prosperity to contribute to diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and justice in engineering education.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Yufeng Liu\, Professor\, Department of Statistics and Operations Research\, Department of Genetics\, Department of Biostatistics\, Carolina Center for Genome Sciences\, UNC LCCC\, University of North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: With the emergence of precision medicine\, estimation of optimal individualized decision rules (IDRs) has attracted tremendous attentions in many scientific areas. Most existing literature has focused on finding optimal IDRs that can maximize the expected outcome for each individual. Motivated by complex individualized decision making procedures and the popular conditional value at risk\, in this talk\, I will introduce two new robust criteria to evaluate IDRs: one is focused on the average lower tail of the subjects’ outcomes and the other is on the individualized lower tail of each subject’s outcome. The proposed criteria take tail behaviors of the outcome into consideration\, and thus the resulting optimal IDRs are robust in controlling adverse events. The optimal IDRs under our criteria can be interpreted as the distributionally robust decision rules that maximize the “worst-case” scenario of the outcome within a probability constrained set. Simulation studies and a real data application are used to demonstrate the robust performance of our methods. Finally\, I will introduce a more general decision-rule based optimized covariates dependent equivalent framework for individualized decision making with risk control.\n\n\nYufeng Liu is a Professor of Statistics and Operations Research and Professor of Biostatistics\, at the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics from Ohio State University in 2004. His current research interests include high-dimensional data analysis\, machine learning\, nonparametric statistics\, bioinformatics\, and cancer genomics.\n\nhttps://yfliu.web.unc.edu/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Clements Bookworm: Author Conversation with Michael Witgen
DESCRIPTION:Against long odds\, the Anishinaabeg resisted removal\, retaining thousands of acres of their homeland in what is now Michigan\, Wisconsin\, and Minnesota. Their success rested partly on their roles as sellers of natural resources and buyers of trade goods\, which made them key players in the political economy of plunder that drove white settlement and U.S. development in the Old Northwest. But\, as Michael Witgen demonstrates\, the credit for Native persistence rested with the Anishannabeg themselves. Outnumbering white settlers well into the nineteenth century\, they leveraged their political savvy to advance a dual citizenship that enabled mixed-race tribal members to lay claim to a place in U.S. civil society. \n\nPart of Native American Heritage Month at U-M: https://mesa.umich.edu/native-american-heritage\n\nFree\, registration required at http://myumi.ch/gjgzR.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Escritura tras la persona: Lectura Fácil

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Symposium: Interior Spaces: The Domestic\, the Personal\, the Intimate\, and the In-Between
DESCRIPTION:History as traditionally practiced has often given short shrift to aspects of life that for most people are among the most significant—the personal\, the intimate\, and the affective—as well as the spaces where such emotive states are often experienced\, be they the kitchen\, the convent\, the waiting room\, or the nursery.  Our four panelists will contribute to the project of pushing “Against History” by drawing on their rich research into diverse aspects of interiority and in-betweenness to demonstrate that such research is not just possible but necessary for a more complete\, complex\, and nuanced understanding of the past.\n\nPanelists:\n\n• Hayley R. Bowman (Postdoctoral Fellow\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, University of Michigan)\n• Victoria Langland (Associate Professor\, History and Romance Languages & Literatures\, University of Michigan)\n• Helmut Puff (Elizabeth L. Eisenstein Collegiate Professor of History and Germanic Languages\, University of Michigan)\n• Jessica Kenyatta Walker (Assistant Professor\, American Culture\, University of Michigan)\n• Christian de Pee\, moderator (Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:How Do We Begin: A Historical Reckoning with Anti-Black Racism at U-M
DESCRIPTION:Written by guest playwright and U-M alumnx Jordan Harris\, this short series of plays illuminates U-M’s complicated relationship to elitism and racial inequity. Using Matthew Johnson’s book Undermining Racial Justice (a historical analysis of the admissions processes at U-M) as an entry point\, the play examines how American colleges and universities—and U-M specifically—have perpetuated anti-Blackness while simultaneously benefiting from their association with inclusive values. Through a series of facilitated discussion and activities\, participants will wrestle with a central question: with an understanding of our inequitable past and present\, how will we imagine and pursue a racially just future?\nThe session length is two hours. How Do We Begin is currently offered in a fully virtual\, synchronous format.\n**The theatrical portion of this session deals directly with anti-Black racism in the academy and its disproportionate impacts.\nIn this session\, participants will:\n\nReflect on their experience\, agency\, and accountability within this history/present.\nUnpack crucial disconnects between institutional rhetoric and action.\nPractice brainstorming ways to disrupt anti-Black racism in their professional practice.\n\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/qA53X.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Environmental Protests\, Shareholder Activism\, and the Struggle for Corporate Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:Activists pushing for social\, political\, and organizational change use a variety of tactics to influence and gain access to powerful decision-makers. Research on social movements has shown that these efforts are often effective in promoting change\, but recent research indicates that at times movement tactics may provoke backlash. This presentation will look at one of the conditions that generates potential backlash to movement activism: a perceived threat to the power and autonomy of decision-makers. Looking at the context of environmental activism in corporate reform\, I show that potential threats to corporate autonomy can induce threat rigidity\, which makes boards and executives less amenable to dialogue with reform-minded activists.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A discussion on the Stepping uP Against Racism and Xenophobia (SPARX) Project
DESCRIPTION:As Nelson Mandela stated\, “no one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin\;” yet\, racism and xenophobia perpetuates in individuals and systems. How are racism and xenophobia learned\, and how can they be unlearned\, in childhood and adolescence? How can we effectively disrupt the effects of racism and xenophobia on children and adolescents? Many schools and policymakers attempt to address racism and xenophobia. Yet\, they often rely on anecdotal suggestions instead of scientifically-informed best practices and intervention approaches.\n\nThe Stepping uP Against Racism and Xenophobia (SPARX) Project involves a collaborative of scholars and community members who are committed to promoting antiracist and antixenophobic competencies in children. Dr. Deborah Rivas-Drake\, 2022 Research and Community Impact Fellow\, will moderate a panel discussion focusing on how to develop and maintain university-partnerships that center community members’ voices\, concerns\, and priorities. Panelists include Drs. Andrew Grant-Thomas\, Laura-Ann Jacobs\, and Gabriela Livas Stein\, who will share their experiences communicating and connecting anti-racist and anti-xenophobic research to practice with parents\, caregivers\, and educators.\n\nModerator: Dr. Deborah Rivas-Drake\, Stephanie J. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DIY Digital Scholarship: Timeline JS
DESCRIPTION:In this DIY Digital Scholarship workshop\, we will be discussing how to make timelines using Knight Lab’s Timeline JS. Timeline JS is an open-source and no-cost tool that builds interactive timelines with a range of media using nothing more than a Google Spreadsheet. The timelines can be shared by a direct link or embedded in web pages. This introduction to Timeline JS will be a hands-on workshop and participants will create a timeline using images\, audio\, and video. Furthermore\, this workshop will provide best practices for accessibility\, writing for the public\, and including Timeline JS in the classroom. No previous experience is needed for this workshop but participants should have access to a Google account and Google Drive. Media and materials for the timeline creation will be provided.\n\nA Zoom link will be emailed to participants before the workshop.\n\nWorkshop Series:\n\nThis workshop series tackles the question\, what would your digital scholarship be if you were an independent scholar or no longer affiliated with the University of Michigan. What tools and platforms can you use to do your research or publication with a computer and an Internet connection? The different workshops in this series will cover learning skills and techniques to communicate information\, ideas\, and interpretations in a digital format with open access lightweight\, portable technologies. Each workshop will focus on a different tool that has no direct cost to users and is straightforward to take with you if/when your affiliation with the university ends. DIY\, or “do it yourself” for this workshop means that the tools covered have an emphasis on “making” or “crafting\,” independence\, and are no-to-low cost. Furthermore\, while we are using DIY to describe these tools\, there are elements of DIT (do it together) and all these tools have a large supportive community with comprehensive documentation and user guides. Often learning these tools can make you a more adaptable and flexible digital scholarship researcher\, and allow you to pick new tools more quickly. This series of hands-on workshops are compatible with and complementary to the DS101 workshop series.\n\nRegister here: https://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/diy-digital-scholarship-timeline-js/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Engineering Advanced Materials for Neural Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDamage to peripheral nerve and spinal cord tissue can have a devastating impact on the quality of life for individuals suffering from nerve injuries. Our research broadly encompasses analyzing and designing natural-based and electrically conducting biomaterials that can interface with neurons to stimulate and guide nerves to regenerate. This talk will specifically address our work on natural-based biomaterials for both peripheral nerve and spinal cord applications.\n\nTo foster peripheral nerve regeneration\, we have focused on both “top down” and “bottom up” approaches. For our “top down” approach\, we have developed natural acellular tissue grafts created by chemical processing of normal intact nerve tissue to preserve the microarchitecture of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and to eliminate the immune response by removing cell components. This research is the foundation for the Avance Nerve Graft from AxoGen\, which is now widely used in clinics for peripheral nerve injuries. In a parallel “bottom up” approach\, we have developed advanced hyaluronan-based scaffolds for nerve regeneration applications. Hyaluronic acid (HA\; also known as hyaluronan) is a non-sulfated\, high molecular weight\, glycosaminoglycan found in all mammals\; it is a major component of the extracellular matrix in the nervous system and plays a significant role in wound healing and tissue regeneration. Our group has devised novel techniques to process HA into forms for use in peripheral nerve repair applications. For example\, we have explored advanced laser-based processes\, in situ crystallization\, and magnetic particle templating to create microarchitecture within the hyaluronan materials to mimic the native basal lamina of nerve cells and thus to provide physical and chemical guidance features for regenerating axons. These materials have shown promise for supporting peripheral nerve repair after acute transection injury and for promoting regeneration of axons into close proximity of microelectrodes for potential prosthetics applications.\n\nFor spinal cord injury (SCI) applications\, we have engineered injectable biomaterials for less invasive application in crush injuries\, which are the most prominent form of SCI. In this work\, we have solubilized decellularized peripheral nerve tissue to create in situ gelling ECM hydrogels. We show that these materials serve as effective therapeutic agents for SCI in rats and are promising delivery agents for cell transplantation applications.\n\nBio:\nChristine E. Schmidt\, Ph.D.\, is the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Professor and Department Chair for the University of Florida Department of Biomedical Engineering. Prior to joining UF in 2013\, she was at the University of Texas at Austin in Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering and was one of the founding faculty members of the UT BME Department. \n\nDr. Schmidt's research is focused on developing new biomaterials and biomaterial composites (e.g.\, natural material scaffolds\, processed tissues\, electronic polymer composites) that can be used to physically guide and stimulate regenerating nerves and the healing of other tissues. Her work is the foundation for the Avance Nerve Repair graft from Axogen and VersaWrap tissue protector from her affiliated start-up company\, Alafair Biosciences. Dr. Schmidt has received many major research awards and recognitions\, including the Clemson Award for Applied Research from the Society for Biomaterials\, induction into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame\, and election to the Florida Academy of Science\, Engineering and Medicine of Florida. Dr. Schmidt is a past President for the American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering (AIMBE). She is a Fellow of AIMBE\, the National Academy of Inventors (NAI)\, the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES)\, the American Society for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)\, the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE)\, and the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE/IUSBSE).\n\nUnder Dr. Schmidt’s leadership as Department Chair\, UF BME’s undergraduate program first became ABET accredited in Fall 2019 and is now ranked #13 among public BME UG programs (U.S. News & World Report\, USNWR). The department’s graduate program is currently ranked #17 among public BME graduate programs by USNWR\, climbing more than 20 spots since 2013. Dr. Schmidt has increased the number of women faculty from 2 when she arrived in 2013 to 15 and the number of URM faculty from 1 to 6 (UF BME faculty is now 52% women\, 21% URM).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | An Antipodal Duality Between Amplitudes and Form Factors
DESCRIPTION:Scattering amplitudes are where quantum field theory directly meets collider experiments. An excellent model for scattering in QCD is provided by N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory\, particularly in the planar limit of a large number of colors\, where the theory becomes integrable. The first nontrivial amplitude in this theory is for 6 gluons. It can be computed to 7 loops using a bootstrap based on the rigidity of the function space of multiple polylogarithms\, together with a few other conditions. One can also bootstrap a particular form factor\, for the chiral stress-tensor operator to produce 3 gluons\, through 8 loops. This form factor is the N=4 analog of the LHC process\, gluon gluon --> Higgs + gluon. Remarkably\, the two sets of results are related by a mysterious “antipodal” duality\, which exchanges the role of branch cuts and derivatives. I will describe how bootstrapping works and what we know about this new duality.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Julia Kelson\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Soil carbonates are widely used in paleoclimate studies because their stable isotopes record a valuable\, ground-level perspective of environmental conditions including moisture availability\, temperatures\, concentrations of CO2\, and overlying vegetation. Despite their importance as an archive and decades of study\, we do not understand how soil carbonates form. This uncertainty clouds our ability to use soil carbonates to quantitatively constrain temperature and water fluxes in ancient soils. In this talk\, I will discuss ongoing research conducted at the University of Michigan that seeks to fill in this knowledge gap by studying modern soil carbonates and soil water in the Western US. We are using two innovative stable isotope techniques\, clumped and triple oxygen isotopes\, to constrain the environmental factors that drive carbonate formation in dryland soils.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NERS Colloquia Series: Actionable Ideas for Nuclear Threat Reduction
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nIn this talk\, I will give a brief overview of the resurgent role of nuclear weapons in national security strategies\, the threat that it poses to the public\, and potential risk mitigation approaches. Recent events\, including U.S. withdrawal from arms control treaties and the pursuit of new nuclear weapons capabilities in the nine nuclear weapons states\, suggest we may be facing a revived nuclear arms race with its dangerous consequences. In this context\, during the past two years\, a group of US physical scientists has held more than 100 colloquia on nuclear weapons\, reaching more than 4\,000 attendees\, and recruited over 850 scientists to the Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction through which scientists educate themselves and then help educate Congress about the renewed risks of nuclear war and the possibilities for reducing those risks. Members have participated in three advocacy campaigns aimed at ensuring that explosive nuclear testing does not resume\, extending the New START treaty\, and enacting a no-first-use policy. \n\nAfter the talk\, Dr. Di Fulvio will hold a discussion for any attendees interested in getting involved in nuclear policy advocacy or the Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction.\n\nBio\nAngela Di Fulvio is an assistant professor in the Department of Nuclear\, Plasma\, and Radiological Engineering (NPRE) at the University of Illinois\, director of the Neutron Measurement Laboratory\, and a researcher in the technical aspects of nuclear safeguards and nonproliferation. Before joining NPRE\, Angela was a research scientist at the University of Michigan where she worked on radiation detection within the framework of the Consortium for Verification Technology. Her current interests include the development of detection systems for safeguards and nonproliferation applications and techniques and algorithms for the radiation protection of the patient in radiation therapy.
