DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

DESCRIPTION:2022 CMENAS Fall Colloquium: Higher Education & Reformation across the MENA: A Geopolitical Exploration\n\n“Higher Ed between Tradition and Inclusion”\n   \nTova Hartman\, Ono Academic College (Israel): *Can a Liberal Democracy tolerate gender segregated higher education: Haredim in Israeli Higher Education*\n   \nOver the past two decades a number of Israeli institutions of higher education have opened gender-segregated programs for the ultra-Orthodox\, or haredim. The growth of these programs has generated an intense debate in Israel\, reflected throughout Israeli media and in several appeals to Israel's Supreme Court. The issues raised concerning gender-segregated higher education reflect an overarching inquiry that is of great interest to multicultural theoreticians: the relationship of liberal democracies to their illiberal minorities. Multicultural theoreticians agree that healthy democracies must tolerate some illiberal practices while acknowledging that not every illiberal practice can be tolerated. In the case at hand\, the essay addresses the question: can a liberal democracy tolerate gender-segregated higher education? Using work by Charles Taylor\, Michael Walzer\, Kwame Anthony Appiah\, John Inazu\, and others\, the essay reviews the arguments for and against gender segregation in higher education for Israeli haredim. The essay explores the limits of toleration of illiberal cultures within liberal democratic societies and finds crucial the right to exit such a culture—a right whose viability is dependent upon adequate education. The essay concludes by discussing the multiculturalism organization development model and what has been termed the manyness and messiness of multiculturalism.\n   \nSpeaker Bios:\n   \nTova Hartman is the dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ono Academic College\, the largest private college in Israel. Her last book\, Are You Not a Man of God?: Devotion\, Betrayal\, and Social Criticism in Jewish Tradition (Oxford)\, brought feminist theory and relational psychology to bear on Jewish theology and culture. Her prior book\, Feminism Encounters Jewish Tradition: Resistance and Accommodation (Brandeis)\, won a National Jewish Book Award. Her first book\, Appropriately Subversive: Modern Mothers in Traditional Religions (Harvard)\, based on her doctoral thesis under Carol Gilligan\, was a comparative study of the experiences of traditional Catholic and Jewish women as mothers and as agents of socialization in their communities and cultures. She has just completed a book on male breakup trauma. DESCRIPTION:Youth mental health needs have drastically increased while availability of care has remained limited. The ability to provide mental health support in schools is one way to improve equitable access to effective programming. However\, school staff need to be provided with adequate training and resources in order to provide these services. This talk will introduce TRAILS (Transforming Research into Action to Improve the Lives of Students)\, a program that supports schools in the implementation of three tiers of programming that are grounded in cognitive & behavioral skills. The speaker will discuss how research has informed the TRAILS model\, and vice versa.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom link:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91655313495 with the passcode: CM-AMO\n\nABC-stacked trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattice (TLG/hBN) has emerged as a playground for correlated electron physics. A spectroscopy study of this system is\, however\, challenging due to the device configuration. In this talk\, I will introduce our recent efforts on FTIR photocurrent spectroscopy measurements of dual-gated TLG/hBN. We observed strong gate-tunable optical transitions that originated from the moire flat band. At half-filling of the valence flat band\, a broad absorption peak emerges at ~18 meV\, indicating direct optical excitation across an emerging Mott gap. Furthermore\, I will talk about a unique moire-enabled interlayer electron-phonon coupling phenomenon in this system. The ZO phonon in hBN hybridizes with electron-hole excitations in trilayer graphene and appear as an asymmetric peak in the photocurrent spectrum. This Fano line-shaped peak evolves continuously as we tune the displacement field. I'll talk about the implications of this phenomenon to engineering the physics of moire quantum matters.\n\n

The film’s website provides the following description for the film: “The story of how Dr. Mutulu Shakur\, stepfather of Tupac Shakur\, along with fellow Black Panthers and the Young Lords\, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America in 1973 - a visionary project eventually deemed too dangerous to exist”.
