SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Peter Brook's The Empty Space discussion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a discussion of \"The Deadly Theatre\,\" the first chapter of The Empty Space by Peter Brook\, the influential director who passed away this summer. \n\nHere is a description of the book from Simon & Schuster:\n\n\"From director and cofounder of the Royal Shakespeare Company Peter Brook\, The Empty Space is a timeless analysis of theatre from the most influential stage director of the twentieth century.\n\nAs relevant as when it was first published in 1968\, groundbreaking director and cofounder of the Royal Shakespeare Company Peter Brook draws on a life in love with the stage to explore the issues facing a theatrical performance—of any scale. He describes important developments in theatre from the last century\, as well as smaller scale events\, from productions by Stanislavsky to the rise of Method Acting\, from Brecht’s revolutionary alienation technique to the free form happenings of the 1960s\, and from the different styles of such great Shakespearean actors as John Gielgud and Paul Scofield to a joyous impromptu performance in the burnt-out shell of the Hamburg Opera just after the war.\n\nPassionate\, unconventional\, and fascinating\, this book shows how theatre defies rules\, builds and shatters illusions\, and creates lasting memories for its audiences.\"\n\nRSVP for this event by emailing me at dhigbeew@umich.edu. PDFs of the book will be sent to those who RSVP.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biopsychology Colloquium - Cooperation\, Conflict\, and the Mechanisms of Social Decision-Making in Capuchin Monkeys
DESCRIPTION:Human cognitive abilities are remarkable\, but not exceptional. In light of evolution\, humans are an extreme primate on one end of an already-sophisticated spectrum. One hypothesis for explaining the evolution of primate cognition is that living in groups selected for a “social mind”\, a larger brain and complex cognitive abilities to aid in solving a myriad of social challenges. This hypothesis has garnered considerable support from experimental paradigms in captivity\, however\, these studies are often void of normal social interactions. Understanding the selective pressure of social challenges on primate cognition\, and the adaptive value of these choices\, requires studying the social mind in a social context. My research program examines how nonhuman primates actually make decisions in their social world\, what factors impact these choices\, and ultimately why these decisions are adaptive. In this talk\, I focus on decision-making during cooperation and conflict\, two situations in which making the wrong choice can have significant fitness consequences. First\, I examine how conflict influences cooperative choices in capuchins\, and the role oxytocin may play in promoting cooperation during conflict. Second\, I present novel methods and some preliminary findings on how wild capuchins solve novel problems and tackle cooperative tasks. By combining the best aspects of naturalistic field work\, highlighting the emergence of social challenges\, and the best aspects of tightly controlled experiments\, highlighting the mechanisms of social choices\, my research offers a promising avenue for understanding the importance of sociality\, cooperation\, and conflict on primate cognitive evolution.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Gender of the Operatic Voice: From Li Yu 李漁 (1611-1680) to Xu Dachun 徐大椿 (1693-1771)
DESCRIPTION:This talk focuses on two important prescriptive manuals for training household singer-actors\, one by Li Yu (1671) and one by Xu Dachun (1748) to ask how and why the singing voice was conceptualized as having a gender in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Chinese discourse on Kunqu opera. Dr. Zeitlin’s talk will attempt to chart a historical change in vocal assumptions from the 1670s to the 1740s\, which takes into account the major shifts in performing norms and conventions that occurred during this period: the reopening of public urban theaters by 1700 and the Yongzheng era reforms that removed female entertainers from the imperial court.\n \n Judith T. Zeitlin is William R. Kenan\, Jr. Professor in East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Theater and Performance Studies at the University of Chicago. Her many publications related to Chinese opera\, visual culture\, and music include \"Performing Images: Opera in Chinese Visual Culture\,\" co-edited with Yuhang Li (2014) and \"The Voice as Something More: Essays Toward Materiality\,\" co-edited with Martha Feldman (2019). She is currently completing a book on the culture of musical entertainment in early modern China\, which focuses on voice\, text\, and instrument.\n \n\nZoom registration link: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_fFXGCnJwTc2VxzAHCN6OnA\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Hear\, Here: Humanities Up Close
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session. Today: “Making Place for Greek Islam” with William Stroebel.\n\nAbout the talk:\nThis talk will open a small window onto the history of Greek-Language Islam (Greek written in the Arabic alphabet by Greek-speaking Muslims of the Ottoman Empire). I try to make a place in literary history for this refugee literature\, which has been uprooted from modern civilizational and national narratives in both Europe and the Middle East. What value can Greek-language Islam offer us today\, amidst the ongoing border crises and Islamophobia in places like Greece\, the U.S.\, and elsewhere?\n\nAbout William Stroebel:\nWilliam Stroebel is a 2022-23 Helmut F. Stern Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and assistant professor\, classical studies and comparative literature.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity and Politics (I-REP)
DESCRIPTION:Racial and ethnic identities play a key role in shaping behaviors\, attitudes\, institutions\, and social structures. As such\, scholars across disciplines have been devoted to investigating how race and ethnicity feature in every aspect of social and political life. The purpose of I-REP (Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity\, and Politics) is to provide a space for scholars whose research centers race\, ethnicity\, and politics across a number of fields to receive critical feedback on the early stages of their work (especially graduate students)\, build community with other researchers who share similar interests and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate on a joint research project within the working group\n\nRacial conflict is a fixture of American politics and society. Issues of race and racial identity have shaped our criminal justice system\, generated social movements like Black Lives Matter\, and have been integral to the development of policies from immigration to housing and education. Outside of formal institutions and organizations\, race also animates our interpersonal relationships and social interactions. While the summer of 2021 marked the most recent “racial reckoning” in America\, it was not the first instance of social unrest in America generated by racial conflict\, and it certainly will not be the last. As America continues to wrestle with race\, I-REP seeks to support interdisciplinary research that analyzes racial inequality and racial conflict in political and social institutions as well as in interpersonal behavior. Such research has been instrumental to multiple disciplines across the social sciences\, including Political Science\, Social Psychology\, Sociology\, Psychology\, and Public Policy\, for decades. And while race\, racial identity\, and racial conflict can (and often are) studied in their own right\, research on almost any topic will benefit from an analysis that accounts for the impact of race across disciplinary boundaries.\n\nAt a time when politicians and political pundits are calling for the erasure of race from educational curricula\, it is imperative that academia continue to create spaces for research on race to be discussed\, evaluated\, critiqued and improved. Therefore\, I-REP strives to encourage scholarly conversations and collaborations among researchers who seek to better understand the consequential role of race and ethnicity in social and political life.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Ph.D. Research Talk: Haoming Shen
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In many real-world applications\, decision makers usually need to make better decisions without the precise knowledge of the uncertainty. With limited amount of data\, distributionally robust chance-constrained optimization (DRC) becomes a powerful tool for decision making because it alleviates the ambiguity in distribution by protecting the optimal solution against a family of candidate distributions\, and thus generalizes better when previously unseen samples arise. However\, DRC models are usually very hard to solve in general. Therefore\, in this talk\, I will seek to answer the following two questions: (1) how can we solve DRCs more efficiently\, and (2) when are DRCs convex and/or tractable? For DRCs with a covering structure\, which arise frequently in facility location\, scheduling\, production planning\, and vehicle routing\, we establish their NP-hardness\, propose a two-stage reformulation and derive two families of strong valid inequalities. For general DRCs\, we uncover a set of sufficient conditions under which DRCs produce a convex feasible region and design efficient algorithms for solving such convex DRCs. I will demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution approaches in multiple real-world applications including the emergency medical facility location problem\, optimal power flow problem\, and planning of charging stations for battery electric buses.\n\nBio: Haoming Shen is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan\, where he is advised by Prof. Ruiwei Jiang. His research focuses on data-driven optimization under uncertainty with applications to robotics\, power grids\, and transportation systems\, and has been awarded the honorable mention award in 2022 INFORMS Optimization Society Best Student Paper Competition.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Shaping Resource Flows: The Role of Carbon Capture in Meeting Net-Zero Carbon Goals
DESCRIPTION:Building the Future: A Distinguished Lecture Series for Academics and Professionals\n\nJennifer Wilcox\, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management at DOE\, discusses \"The Role of Carbon Capture in Meeting Net-Zero Carbon Goals\" and how it relates to shaping resource flows.\n\nPresident Biden has laid out a bold and ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the U.S. by 2050. The pathway to that target includes cutting total greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and eliminating them entirely from the Nation’s electricity sector by 2035. Investment in technology research\, design\, development\, and deployment (RDD&D) will be required to achieve the president’s objectives\, including investments in both carbon capture at point sources in addition to carbon dioxide removal approaches that target the accumulated pool of carbon in the atmosphere. Both will be required to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in time and they will require increased deployment in order to move down the cost curve. These efforts combined with effective policy will make these approaches economically viable. These approaches are critical and they must be deployed in parallel. Deployment of these technologies at the scale required will necessitate the use of resources including land\, water\, and in some cases\, low-carbon energy\, while ensuring the secure and reliable storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) on a timescale that impacts climate. Therefore\, CCS and CDR deployment must be implemented strategically in terms of regional goals and requirements. \n\nA panelist discussion will follow the lecture. Our distinguished panelists include: Andres Clarens\, Professor\, University of Virginia\, Associate Director\, Environmental Resilience Institute\; and Richard Middleton\, CEO\, Carbon Solutions\, LLC.\n\nSponsored by the U-M Global CO2 Initiative\; Penn Engineering\, University of Pennsylvania\; Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management\, U.S. DOE\; Kleinman Center\; and U-M Graham Sustainability Institute

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Frontiers of Justice: Jews & Muslims in Christian Iberian legislation\, 11-12th centuries
DESCRIPTION:When appraising the position of Jews and Muslims in premodern European societies – and\, therefore\, the extent to which non-Christians were tolerated\, persecuted\, and ‘racialised’ in the Latin West – historians habitually turn to legislation as a point of reference. But what social\, political\, and intellectual work\, exactly\, did legal texts do in framing religious difference? This talk answers this question through the example of medieval Iberia – where inter-religious encounters were particularly intense\, and especially visible in the extant legal records. \n\nThe talk highlights the need to better understand the tension between legal norms and practices in discussing how Christian legislation framed religious minorities. To do so\, it focuses on the negotiation of violent transgressions against Jews and Muslims in legal franchises drafted during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The talk explores how the regulation of non-Christian violence served as an instrument of political legitimation. It then unfolds how such regulations were resisted\, reformed\, and accepted at the local level. These texts reflected not simply norms on Christian-Muslim-Jewish interaction\, but norms as they were being contested.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Emily Diana\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Statistics and Data Science\, Wharton School\, University of Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: While data science enables rapid societal advancement\, deferring decisions to machines does not automatically avoid egregious equity or privacy violations. Without safeguards in the scientific process --- from data collection to algorithm design to model deployment --- machine learning models can easily inherit or amplify existing biases and vulnerabilities present in society. My research focuses on explicitly encoding algorithms with ethical norms and constructing frameworks ensuring that statistics and machine learning methods are deployed in a socially responsible manner. In particular\, I develop theoretically rigorous and empirically verified algorithms to mitigate automated bias and protect individual privacy.\n\nI will highlight this work through two main contributions. In the first\, I discuss a new oracle-efficient and convergent algorithm to provably achieve minimax group fairness -- fairness measured by worst-case outcomes across groups -- in general settings. In the second\, I illustrate a framework for producing a sensitive attribute proxy that allows one to train a fair model even when the original sensitive features are redacted or unavailable.\n\nFull text versions of the two papers can be found at https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3461702.3462523 (“Minimax Group Fairness: Algorithms and Experiments”) and\nhttps://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3531146.3533180 (“Multiaccurate Proxies for Downstream Fairness”).

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Student Speaker Series - Class is in (re)Cession: A Take on the Impending Recession
DESCRIPTION:How do interest rates impact recession potential? What signs should we be looking for if/when there will be a recession? What positives could result from a recession? How can you form economic predictions basedon charts and graphs? \n\nJoin our top-ranked Technical Analyst\, Rob Ginsberg & leading Consumer Vice President\, Spencer Hanus on Tuesday\, November 29th at 4:00pm via Zoom as they share their insights into the potential recession and subsequent impact on the broader and consumer market. There will also be time at the end for Live Q&A. Many investors believe a recession is likely sometime in 2023\; however\, the exact timing and depth are a subject of debate. Regardless of the answer to that question\, consumer behavior will be impacted. The extent depends on a variety of factors\, such as whether the company falls under the Discretionary or Staples classification. The impending recession and resulting impact to the consumer are key questions investors take into consideration\, and we will illustratehow Wall Street analysts at Wolfe are thinking about the business cycles.
