Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \r\n\r\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \r\n\r\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine In light of evolution, humans are an extreme primate on one end of an already-sophisticated spectrum. One hypothesis for explaining the evolution of primate cognition is that living in groups selected for a \u201csocial mind\u201d, a larger brain and complex cognitive abilities to aid in solving a myriad of social challenges. This hypothesis has garnered considerable support from experimental paradigms in captivity, however, these studies are often void of normal social interactions. Understanding the selective pressure of social challenges on primate cognition, and the adaptive value of these choices, requires studying the social mind in a social context. My research program examines how nonhuman primates actually make decisions in their social world, what factors impact these choices, and ultimately why these decisions are adaptive. In this talk, I focus on decision-making during cooperation and conflict, two situations in which making the wrong choice can have significant fitness consequences. First, I examine how conflict influences cooperative choices in capuchins, and the role oxytocin may play in promoting cooperation during conflict. Second, I present novel methods and some preliminary findings on how wild capuchins solve novel problems and tackle cooperative tasks. Dr. Zeitlin\u2019s talk will attempt to chart a historical change in vocal assumptions from the 1670s to the 1740s, which takes into account the major shifts in performing norms and conventions that occurred during this period: the reopening of public urban theaters by 1700 and the Yongzheng era reforms that removed female entertainers from the imperial court.\r\n \r\n Judith T. Zeitlin is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor in East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Theater and Performance Studies at the University of Chicago. Issues of race and racial identity have shaped our criminal justice system, generated social movements like Black Lives Matter, and have been integral to the development of policies from immigration to housing and education. Outside of formal institutions and organizations, race also animates our interpersonal relationships and social interactions. While the summer of 2021 marked the most recent \u201cracial reckoning\u201d in America, it was not the first instance of social unrest in America generated by racial conflict, and it certainly will not be the last. As America continues to wrestle with race, I-REP seeks to support interdisciplinary research that analyzes racial inequality and racial conflict in political and social institutions as well as in interpersonal behavior. Such research has been instrumental to multiple disciplines across the social sciences, including Political Science, Social Psychology, Sociology, Psychology, and Public Policy, for decades. The authors of three books in the field read from and discuss their work at a roundtable moderated by Dr. Ken Chitwood, author of The Muslims of Latin America and the Caribbean (2021). \r\n\r\n\r\nWilliam Calvo- Quir\u00f3s discusses his *Undocumented Saints: The Politics of Migrating Devotions* (2022), which follows the migration of popular Catholic saints from Mexico into the U.S. and the evolution of their meaning in the context of racism and Latinx immigrant battles for survival. \r\n\r\n\r\nAliyah Khan talks about *Far from Mecca: Globalizing the Muslim Caribbean* (2020), the first academic monograph on Muslims in the English-speaking Caribbean, focusing on the gendered fiction, poetry, and music of Islam of enslaved West African Muslims, indentured South Asian Indian Muslims, and their descendants in Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica. \r\n\r\n\r\nJocelyn Fenton Stitt's *Dreams of Archives Unfolded: Absence and Caribbean Life Writing* (2021), the first academic book on pan-Caribbean life writing and the recent use of the genre by Caribbean women to explore historical and archival absences. This talk focuses on Cuban Jewishness, feminism, and formal practices used to write about historical absences. \r\n\r\nCombining literary studies, cultural studies, anthropology, women\u2019s and gender studies, and historiography, these books showcase the innovative, interdisciplinary ways in which religious studies and feminist scholars study and write about creolized and syncretic cultures in the Caribbean and the hemispheric Americas.\r\n\r\n\r\nKen Chitwood will be moderating this conversation. He is a religion scholar conducting research on ethnographic journalism with the University of Southern California\u2019s Center for Religion and Civic Culture\u2019s Engaged Spirituality Project and on Latinx Muslim philanthropy with the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative (MPI) at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IUPUI. With limited amount of data, distributionally robust chance-constrained optimization (DRC) becomes a powerful tool for decision making because it alleviates the ambiguity in distribution by protecting the optimal solution against a family of candidate distributions, and thus generalizes better when previously unseen samples arise. However, DRC models are usually very hard to solve in general. Therefore, in this talk, I will seek to answer the following two questions: (1) how can we solve DRCs more efficiently, and (2) when are DRCs convex and\/or tractable? For DRCs with a covering structure, which arise frequently in facility location, scheduling, production planning, and vehicle routing, we establish their NP-hardness, propose a two-stage reformulation and derive two families of strong valid inequalities. For general DRCs, we uncover a set of sufficient conditions under which DRCs produce a convex feasible region and design efficient algorithms for solving such convex DRCs. I will demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution approaches in multiple real-world applications including the emergency medical facility location problem, optimal power flow problem, and planning of charging stations for battery electric buses.\r\n\r\nBio: Haoming Shen is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he is advised by Prof. Ruiwei Jiang. Both will be required to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in time and they will require increased deployment in order to move down the cost curve. These efforts combined with effective policy will make these approaches economically viable. These approaches are critical and they must be deployed in parallel. Deployment of these technologies at the scale required will necessitate the use of resources including land, water, and in some cases, low-carbon energy, while ensuring the secure and reliable storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) on a timescale that impacts climate. Therefore, CCS and CDR deployment must be implemented strategically in terms of regional goals and requirements. \r\n\r\nA panelist discussion will follow the lecture. This talk answers this question through the example of medieval Iberia \u2013 where inter-religious encounters were particularly intense, and especially visible in the extant legal records. \r\n\r\nThe talk highlights the need to better understand the tension between legal norms and practices in discussing how Christian legislation framed religious minorities. To do so, it focuses on the negotiation of violent transgressions against Jews and Muslims in legal franchises drafted during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The talk explores how the regulation of non-Christian violence served as an instrument of political legitimation. It then unfolds how such regulations were resisted, reformed, and accepted at the local level. Without safeguards in the scientific process --- from data collection to algorithm design to model deployment --- machine learning models can easily inherit or amplify existing biases and vulnerabilities present in society. My research focuses on explicitly encoding algorithms with ethical norms and constructing frameworks ensuring that statistics and machine learning methods are deployed in a socially responsible manner. In particular, I develop theoretically rigorous and empirically verified algorithms to mitigate automated bias and protect individual privacy.\r\n\r\nI will highlight this work through two main contributions. In the first, I discuss a new oracle-efficient and convergent algorithm to provably achieve minimax group fairness -- fairness measured by worst-case outcomes across groups -- in general settings.
