Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. Looking beyond the pandemic, it is now being widely recognized that health systems, and supply chains supporting them, need to be transformed to address health issues in a holistic and integrated manner ensuring equitable access and increasing self-sufficiency. We need to develop next generation resilient health systems and the supply chains that support them, leveraging partnerships, bottom-up innovations, financing, workforce, and governance models to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all. A holistic and systems-based approach towards health systems and supply chains is needed to ensure end-to-end service delivery supporting diagnostics, essential medicines, and health care products to address current health issues as well as the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.\r\n\r\nGHSCS 2022 will explore these issues through a combination of keynotes, panel discussions, and contributed talks. Like in the past, the conference will assemble a collection of experts that include government representatives, academics, NGOs, civil society, industry, donor and multilateral representatives to explore these topics. A critical strain has been key to shaping a cross-border Mizrahi epistemology, performed in conversation with multiple fields such as ethnic and race studies, gender studies, cultural studies, and post\/colonial studies. Yet the intellectual home of Mizrahi studies remains fraught with ambiguities, symptomatic of an in-between identity which does not always fit neatly into a single institutional space. The very name of the field, \u201cMizrahi,\u201d exists in relation to other rubrics -- Sephardis, Arab Jews, Jews from Muslim countries, Middle Eastern Jews, Asian and African Jews, etc. -- each suggesting different mappings and frames of reference. Although not necessarily mutually exclusive, these diverse rubrics suggest the intricacies of a historically recent constructed identity and the multiple genealogies and orientations that mark this compelling area of inquiry. Critical Mizrahi scholars themselves, as writing subjects, have deepened the study of their own variegated communal stories and experiences across multiple geographies. \r\n\r\nThis symposium aims to address some of the key issues raised by Mizrahi studies as conceptualized through a transnational, transregional, multidirectional, and intersectional prism. Rather than produce a Mizrahi subject in isolation, the symposium will problematize any fixed understanding of Mizrahiness by highlighting the ways this concept is dynamically shaped by class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, nation, and so forth. The symposium strives to illuminate Mizrahi studies as a critical field not simply about the Mizrahim but also about decolonization of knowledge. It hopes to interrogate established categories by asking what constitutes legitimate knowledge when ways of knowing may themselves have to be reconceptualized in a discursive climate saturated with hierarchical, exclusionary, and even violent assumptions? Some additional questions posed by the symposium include: Which methodological paradigms and epistemic frameworks enable the shaping of fragmented memories into a broader and more relational narrative? What kind of obstacles do scholars face in the process of carrying out research involving archival documentation and oral transmission, when such data collection is entangled in histories of obscuring and silencing? What challenges does an academically normative discourse pose for those writing on subjects that touch on traumatic experiences and memories, at once personal, familial, and communal? And what lessons could be learned from more self-reflexive research practices and coping strategies in terms of future scholarship. Furthermore, offering a middle option led to differences in response effects that are related to respondent characteristics, including social desirability bias and satisficing effects. While a question form that branches middle responses has been shown to have a lower validity compared to offered form in telephone surveys, potentially, branched question form can motivate respondents to spend extra time and effort in giving a response in the absence of an interviewer. Therefore, differences in validity and reliability of responses to branched question form compared to offered form is a research interest in general population web surveys. This study tests the validity and the reliability to branched question form in a general population survey using a randomized experiment. The branched question form did not change validity and reliability of responses and reduced the satisficing behavior based on the proxies compared to the offered form.\r\n\r\nZ. Tuba Suzer Gurtekin is an Assistant Research Scientist within the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan. She is the scientific leader of the Surveys of Consumers, which conducts monthly national surveys of American households to understand consumer expectations and how those expectations impact their spending and saving behavior. Her research experience has included development of alternative sample, methodology and questionnaire designs, data collection and analysis methods for a general population in parallel survey modes. In addition to her work through the Surveys of Consumers, she also currently serves on the Board of Associate Editors of CDC\u2019s Preventing Chronic Disease Journal. 608.82She teaches survey sampling and survey methodology in University of Michigan\u2019s Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis Program (OJOC CRDSA).\r\n\r\nMPSDS\r\nThe University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality \u2014 which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.\r\n\r\nSISRT\r\nJune 5 \u2013 July 28, 2023\r\n\r\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques is a teaching program of the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research. It is located on the central campus of the University of Michigan at 426 Thompson Street in Ann Arbor. The summer courses are select offerings from the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science, and can be used to pursue a doctorate, master of science and a certificate in survey methodology.\r\n\r\nAll 2023 courses will be offered in an alternative remote format with the exception of the Sampling Program for Survey Statisticians. Payment of Summer Scholar and workshop fees must be made in full before you will be officially registered for class. Fees are based on total \u201ccourse hours\u201d (assigned to each course as shown in the section on description of courses and on the 2023 course schedule) although no formal academic credit is actually earned.\r\n\r\nOur courses this summer will be offered primarily by two-way, live video through a platform that supports lectures and group work. In some cases, courses are offered in a flipped format in which lectures are video recorded for students to watch on-demand and then meet with their instructor by two-way live video to discuss the lectures, readings, and problem sets. All classes are scheduled in Eastern Standard Time Zone.\r\n\r\nWe have been offering courses in remote formats for many years through our connection with the graduate programs at the Universities of Michigan and Maryland which share all courses by live classroom-to-classroom video. Her interests span democracy, peace and security, transitional justice, and information and communications technology for development in West Africa. As Director of CDD West Africa, she has strengthened its position as a leader in technology related research through a portfolio of projects. This includes, but is not limited to, analyses of the nexus between social media platforms, election processes, and electoral outcomes, specific studies exploring the role played by individual platforms \u2013 for example WhatsApp \u2013 during voting periods, and an assessment of the use of personal data in political campaigning in Nigeria. Under her leadership, CDD West Africa move from being unranked in 2013, to 11th out of 94 think-tanks in sub-Saharan Africa by 2020 according to a University of Pennsylvania index. \r\n\r\nHer expertise in the civil and democratic space in West Africa has been recognized and led to her membership of many reputable committees. Her current research examines election related violence, state capture, and distributive politics in developing countries, especially those in Africa. She has conducted fieldwork, archival, and survey research in Angola, Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, and South Africa. Her publications include 4 books and dozens of articles in scholarly journals. This election would mark Nigeria\u2019s 24 years of a post-military authoritarian multi-party democracy. Nigeria transitioned to democracy in May 1999 after several decades of military rule. Since the transition to Democracy, the country has been bedeviled with challenges of insecurity as result of Islamist insurgency in the Northeast, oil insurgency in the Niger Delta, Biafra separatist in the East and agitation for fiscal federalism in the West. Many of these challenges have resulted in gross violations of human rights and erosion of democratic institutions. At the same time, the elections in 2023 gives a new generation of voters, mainly youths, a hope of heralding a new era of political and economic reforms that could help strengthen democratic institutions in the country. Therefore, this panel brings together experts on elections, democracy and human rights to interrogate the future of democratic practices in Nigeria. This panel will examine the prospects for 2023 elections. Will the surge in new voter registration orchestrated by youths through social media platforms herald a new political era in Nigeria? Will the election be a return to the status quo? Will questions of human rights shape electioneering campaigns? Will violence play a role in the election?
