SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Author Talk: The Petroleum Papers by Geoff Dembicki
DESCRIPTION:Interested in the intersection of Climate Change\, Corporate Strategy\, Marketing & Advertising Strategy\, and one of the biggest business cover-ups of the century?\n\nPlease join the graduate and undergraduate chapters of Net Impact and professor Andy Hoffman in welcoming author Geoff Dembicki to discuss his recent book\, \"The Petroleum Papers: Inside the Far-Right Conspiracy to Cover Up Climate Change.\"\n\nAbout the book: \"Drawing from hundreds of confidential oil industry documents spanning decades\, this explosive work of investigative reporting reveals for the first time the far-right conspiracy that’s stopped the world from preventing the climate crisis.\n\nThe Petroleum Papers\, investigative journalist Geoff Dembicki tells the story of how the American oil companies that founded the tar sands in Alberta\, Canada—home to the third-biggest oil reserves on the planet—ignored warnings about climate devastation as early as 1959. Instead of alerting the world to act on this impending global disaster\, Exxon\, Koch Industries\, Shell and others created ad campaigns saying climate change isn't real and that alternatives to oil are an economic disaster. These companies built a global right-wing echo chamber to ensure tar sands could keep flowing into the U.S.\, which helped elect Donald Trump and now leaves the Joe Biden administration with a sprawling climate mess.\"\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. Please sign up here: https://cglink.me/2ez/r1898841\n\nGeoff Dembicki is an investigative climate change reporter from Alberta\, Canada\, home of the largest tar sand deposits in the world. His book Are We Screwed? won the 2018 Green Prize for Sustainable Literature. He is a regular contributor to the Tyee and VICE. He lives in Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Global Health Supply Chain Summit 2022
DESCRIPTION:RE-IMAGINING HEALTH SUPPLY CHAIN AND SYSTEMS FOR EQUITY\, RESILIENCY\, and COUNTRY OWNERSHIP\n\nThe last couple of years have highlighted several vulnerabilities in country health systems impacting not only their response to the pandemic but also their ability to continue to address other routine health issues. In the past two GHSCS events\, we have discussed some of these issues taking stock of how supply chains have managed to cope with such stress\, and discussed strategies that need to be developed to address the gaps and vulnerabilities on their journey to recovery. Looking beyond the pandemic\, it is now being widely recognized that health systems\, and supply chains supporting them\, need to be transformed to address health issues in a holistic and integrated manner ensuring equitable access and increasing self-sufficiency. We need to develop next generation resilient health systems and the supply chains that support them\, leveraging partnerships\, bottom-up innovations\, financing\, workforce\, and governance models to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all. A holistic and systems-based approach towards health systems and supply chains is needed to ensure end-to-end service delivery supporting diagnostics\, essential medicines\, and health care products to address current health issues as well as the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.\n\nGHSCS 2022 will explore these issues through a combination of keynotes\, panel discussions\, and contributed talks. Like in the past\, the conference will assemble a collection of experts that include government representatives\, academics\, NGOs\, civil society\, industry\, donor and multilateral representatives to explore these topics. The committee is particularly interested in capturing the voices from the field to learn and share experiences related to the conference theme and mechanisms to achieve progress.\n\nFeaturing Keynote/Plenary speakers:\nHonorable Health Minister of Senegal (TBC)\nDr. Amadou Alpha Sall\, Executive Director\, IPD Dakar\nDr. Yodi Alakija\, WHO Special Envoy for the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (Tentative)\nMr. Apoorva Kumar\, Founder/CEO\, Jumia\n\nPlenary Panels:\n1. Ecosystem services to support pharma manufacturing in Africa\n2. Enhanced access to public health commodities through harmonized regulatory processes\n3. Access to NCD Care – Diabetes\n4. SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Minamata: Lens on Postwar Democracy and Persistent Legacy of the Transwar Period
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/bR659\n\nTimothy George has written about how responses to the mercury poisoning in Minamata\, which became the symbol both of the dark side of high growth and of the rise of the citizens movement\, shed light on Japan’s postwar democracy. In this talk he will bring the story up to date by including events since the 1990s\, and suggest that after four so-called “solutions” without full resolution\, Minamata has joined issues such as war apologies\, the “comfort women” sex slaves\, atomic bomb victims\, and territorial disputes as a persistent legacy of the 1930s-1950s transwar period.\n\nProfessor Emeritus Timothy George received an A.B. from Stanford\, M.A. from the University of Hawai‘i\, and A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard. Between 1962 and the present he has spent 17 years in Japan\, one year in China\, and half a year each in Southeast Asia and Tajikistan. He retired in 2021 from the University of Rhode Island\, where he taught East and Southeast Asian history and served as History department chair and president of the URI AAUP. He was a visiting professor at Harvard in 2004-05 and was a Fulbright researcher in Japan\, affiliated with the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo\, in 1993-95 and 2012-13. His research interests include Japan’s environmental and local history. His publications include *Minamata: Pollution and the Struggle for Democracy in Postwar Japan* (2001)\, “Tanaka Shōzō's Vision of an Alternative Constitutional Modernity for Japan” (in *Public Spheres\, Private Lives in Modern Japan\, 1600-1950*\, 2005)\, and “Toroku: Mountain Dreams\, Chemical Nightmares” (in *Japan at Nature's Edge*\, 2013). Co-edited works include *Japanese History and Culture from Ancient to Modern Times: Seven Basic Bibliographies* (with John W. Dower\, second ed.\, 1995)\, *Japan Since 1945: From Postwar to Post-Bubble* (with Christopher Gerteis\, 2013)\, and *Japanese Constitutional Revision and Civic Activism* (with Helen Hardacre\, Keigo Komamura\, and Franziska Seraphim\, 2021). He co-translated Harada Masazumi\, *Minamata Disease* (2004) and Saitō Hisashi\, *Niigata Minamata Disease* (2009)\, and directed and edited the translation of Mikuriya Takashi and Nakamura Takafusa\, *Politics and Power in 20th-Century Japan: The Reminiscences of Miyazawa Kiichi* (2015). He is an avid hiker\, traveler\, and photographer.\n\nThis lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IISS Book Workshop. God's Property: Islam\, Charity\, and the Modern State
DESCRIPTION:Up to the twentieth century\, Islamic charitable endowments provided the material foundation of the Muslim world. In Lebanon\, with the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the imposition of French colonial rule\, many of these endowments reverted to private property circulating in the marketplace. In contemporary Beirut\, however\, charitable endowments have resurfaced as mosques\, Islamic centers\, and nonprofit organizations. A historical anthropology in dialogue with Islamic law\, God's Property demonstrates how these endowments have been drawn into secular logics—no longer the property of God but of the Muslim community—and shaped by the modern state and modern understandings of charity and property. Although these transformations have produced new kinds of loyalties and new ways of being in society\, Moumtaz’s ethnography reveals the furtive persistence of endowment practices that perpetuate older ways of thinking of one’s self and one’s responsibilities toward family and state.\n\nAttendees are encouraged to read the introduction prior to the event. Limited copies of the book are available on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall\, suite 500. An open-access ebook is also available here: https://luminosoa.org/site/books/m/10.1525/luminos.100/.

DESCRIPTION:\"A Double-Edged Sword”: Genetic Data Sharing and Implications for the Learning Health System\n\nThursday\, December 1\, 2022\n\n12:00 pm - 1:30 pm ET\n\nGreat Lakes Room\, Palmer Commons\, 4th floor\n\n100 Washtenaw Ave.\, Ann Arbor\, MI\n\nSpeaker:\nKayte Spector-Bagdady\, JD\, MBioethics\nInterim Co-Director\, Center for Bioethics & Social Sciences in Medicine Assistant Professor\, Obstetrics & Gynecology\nUniversity of Michigan Medical School\n\nIn contrast to the laborious and expensive process of generating genetic datasets de novo\, academic genetic researchers are increasingly using large and inexpensive “secondary” research datasets held by government\, consortia\, and industry for their work. Choosing between different kinds of data providers is about more than just convenience\, however\, it can also have important implications for the kind of science advanced and to which communities it will generalize. This talk will explore the factors driving researchers to select certain datasets for their work as well as their experiences sharing to\, as well as using\, shared data resources. As researchers wait for the new National Institutes of Health’s “Policy for Data Management and Sharing” to go into effect in January 2023\, this talk will explore who ultimately carries the burden of increasing data sharing requirements

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: \"Molecular Engineering to Turn Immunity On and Off\"
DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\nABSTRACT:\nThe immune system exists in a delicate balance of mounting active\, effector responses to fight infection from invading pathogens and to kill mutated cells\, while existing in an active state of tolerance to the non-self contents of the gut and on the skin and to self proteins throughout the body. Dysfunction can lead to susceptibility to infection and cancer on the one hand\, and to allergy and autoimmunity on the other. We are developing immunotherapies to tip this balance one way or the other – for example engineering cytokines to create an immune response against mutated self in cancer\, or engineering cytokines create tolerogenic environments and engineering antigen delivery systems to inverse vaccinate against an autoimmune disease to re-establish immunological tolerance to self.\n\n\nBIO:\nJeffrey Hubbell is Eugene Bell Professor in Tissue Engineering at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering of the University of Chicago. Previous to moving to Chicago\, he was on the faculty of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL\, where he served as Director of the Institute of Bioengineering and Dean of the School of Life Sciences)\, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and University of Zurich\, the California Institute of Technology\, and the University of Texas in Austin. He holds a BS from Kansas State University and a PhD from Rice University\, both degrees being in chemical engineering. He was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 2010\, the National Academy of Inventors in 2014\, the National Academy of Medicine in 2019\, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021.\n \nHubbell uses biomaterials and protein engineering approaches to investigate topics in regenerative medicine and immunotherapeutics. In regenerative medicine\, he focuses on biomaterial matrices that mimic the extracellular matrix and on growth factor - extracellular matrix interactions\, working in a variety of animal models of regenerative medicine. In immunotherapeutics\, he focuses on nanomaterials in vaccines that target lymphoid-resident antigen presenting cells and on protein engineering approaches to deliver antigen to the spleen and liver for inverse vaccines to induce tolerance to protein drugs and in autoimmunity. His interests are both basic and translational\, having founded or co-founded six biomedical companies based on his technology\, namely Focal\, in Boston\, acquired by Genzyme\; Kuros Biosciences\, in Zurich\, in the domain of regenerative medicine\; Anokion and Kanyos Bio\, in Boston\, both in the domain of immunological tolerance\; Clostra Bio\, in Chicago\, in the domain of food allergy\, founded together in with Prof. Cathryn Nagler at the University of Chicago\; Arrow Immune\, in the domain of cancer immunotherapy\, founded together with Jun Ishihara at Imperial College London and Melody Swartz at the University of Chicago\; and HeioThera\, in the domain of autoimmunity and inflammation\, founded together with Jun Ishihara at Imperial College London.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Finite-State Markov-Chain Approximations: A Hidden Markov Approach Coauthored with Sean McCrary (University of Pennsylvania)
DESCRIPTION:This paper proposes a novel finite-state Markov chain approximation method for Markov processes with continuous support. The method can be used for both uni- and multivariate processes\, as well as non-stationary processes such as those with a life-cycle component. The method is based on minimizing the information loss between a misspecified approximating model and the true data generating process. In contrast to existing methods\, we provide both an optimal grid and transition probability matrix. We provide guidance on how to select the optimal number of grid points. The method outperforms existing methods in several dimensions\, including parsimoniousness. We compare the performance of our method to existing methods through the lens of an asset-pricing model\, and a life-cycle consumption-savings model. We find the choice of the discretization method matters for the accuracy of the model solutions\, the welfare costs of risk\, and the amount of wealth inequality a life-cycle model can generate.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar Series: Hydrogen-Electric Technologies for Future Zero-Emissions Aviation
DESCRIPTION:Philip Ansell\nAssociate Professor\nAllen Ormsbee Faculty Scholar\nUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, Department of Aerospace Engineering\n\nAbout the seminar:\nThe aeronautics industry has been challenged on many fronts to increase flight efficiency\, reduce greenhouse gas emissions\, and decrease dependence on traditional hydrocarbon fuels. Recently\, the aviation sector has surpassed a CO2 production rate of 1 billion metric tons per year\, which without new interventions in policy\, technology\, and business practices\, will further increase alongside the growing air-transport market. Electrification of aircraft systems offers a promising avenue for decarbonizing aviation\, though in a fashion unique from approaches used in other transportation markets. This talk will provide a background into aircraft electrification\, describe technological developments that enable improvements towards environmentally-responsible air transportation\, and forecast a vision for future generations of aircraft systems. A case study is provided\, focusing on the integration of hydrogen-electric systems for zero-emissions aircraft operations.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Phillip J. Ansell is an Associate Professor and Allen Ormsbee Faculty Scholar in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also the director of the Center for High-Efficiency Electrical Technologies for Aircraft (CHEETA) focused on developing advanced technologies for electrified aircraft propulsion. His primary areas of work include subsonic and transonic aerodynamics\, sustainable aviation\, aero-propulsive integration\, air-vehicle design\, and aircraft propulsion electrification.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Departmental Seminar (899): Linda Ng Boyle\, Professor at University of Washington
DESCRIPTION:Modeling human-vehicle interactions requires an understanding of the human behavior. The model development needs to capture human’s interaction with their surroundings to better inform the algorithms for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). A challenge in model development is the ability to accurately predict human behavior\, particularly in complex environments that include other human road users\, such as pedestrians and bicyclists. \nAgents\, environments\, and scenarios provide the key indicators for quantifying human-vehicle interaction. A framework is presented to better quantify and predict interactive human-vehicle decision-making. \n\nThe Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend. A reception will be held afterwards in the IOE Commons from 4-5pm.\n\nPresenter Bio:\nLinda Ng Boyle is Professor in Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Washington\, Seattle. She has a joint appointment in Civil & Environmental Engineering. She has degrees from the University of Buffalo and University of Washington. She is a member of the National Academies Board of Human System Integration and co-author of the textbook\, “Designing for People: An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering”.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Stillness\, Stuck-ness\, and Sensing Against the Archive
DESCRIPTION:Historians have much to learn from stopped time. Examining the sensation\, perception\, and documentation of stasis opens up categorical and ontological questions about how change is determined. Through a series of case studies of scholarly- and lay-understandings of silence\, Professor Hui will reflect on the role of stillness in history. Related\, she will consider how the phenomenology of delay informs our understanding of the practices and infrastructures of science. Documentation\, from diaries to lab protocols\, both simulates simultaneity and the affective experience of delay\, prompting consideration of where slowness can be found in the historical record\, challenging the very practice of history.\n\nAlexandra Hui is an associate professor of history at Mississippi State University. She received her PhD from the University of California at Los Angeles in 2008. She has also published several scholarly articles and chapters in anthologies\, and coedited the 2013 Osiris volume on music\, sound\, and the laboratory. Her monograph\, The Psychophysical Ear: Musical Experiments\, Experimental Sounds\, 1840–1910 (MIT Press\, 2012)\, explores the relationship between psychophysical studies of sound sensation and music culture. She has received awards and fellowships from the National Science Foundation\, the Fulbright Foundation\, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Presentation:MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Meichen Liu
DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Influence of shear wave velocity heterogeneity on SH-wave reverberation imaging of the mantle transition zone*\n\nWe use the top-side shear wave reflection Ssds as a probe for mapping the depths of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath the contiguous US. Using a common-reflection point (CRP) mapping approach\, we observe that the MTZ are about 40–50 km deeper beneath the western United States than the central-eastern United States if based on the 1-D Earth wave velocity model (Preliminary Reference Earth Model). However\, the east-to-west deepening of the MTZ disappears in the CRP image if we account for 3-D shear wave velocity variations in the mantle according to global tomography. In addition\, from spectral-element method synthetics\, we find that ray theory overpredicts the traveltime delays of the reverberations. Undulations of the MTZ are underestimated when their wavelengths are smaller than the Fresnel zones of the wave reverberations in the MTZ. Therefore\, modelling of layering in the upper mantle must be based on 3-D reference structures and accurate calculations of reverberation traveltimes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Farrand Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:A public reception will precede the lecture in the museum atrium and lobby beginning at 6:00 p.m. The museum is located in the Biological Sciences Building (address above).\n\nJoin Daniel C. Fisher\, Claude W. Hibbard Collegiate Professor of Paleontology\, U-M Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences\, and Curator\, U-M Museum of Paleontology\, for the 22nd annual William R. Farrand Memorial Lecture\, presented by the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History.\n\nFocusing on the life of the Buesching mastodon\, represented by the large cast skeleton displayed in the atrium of the U-M Museum of Natural History\, On the Trail of an Ice Age Mastodon will reveal the story of one male’s struggles and victories\, from adolescence to the mating-season battle that ultimately claimed his life.\n\nPaleontologists seeking to understand the lives of extinct animals often make do with scant clues gleaned from an animal’s skeleton\, from its circumstances of preservation\, and from its time of death. Reconstructing lost ecosystems is always a challenge\, but sometimes we get lucky. At its best\, the fossil record provides clear snapshots\, or even motion sequences from the past\, such as footprints showing how an animal moved. On a larger scale\, we can now read records of growth and behavior archived in the mineralized layers of mastodon tusks\, allowing us to follow a single animal for years\, across entire landscapes. For the first time\, we identify seasonal migratory behavior that may have been key to meeting the challenges of reproduction near the end of the Ice Age.\n\nThis event will be live-streamed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:On the Trail of an Ice Age Mastodon
DESCRIPTION:A public reception will precede the lecture in the museum atrium and lobby beginning at 6:00 p.m. The museum is located in the Biological Sciences Building.\n\nJoin Daniel C. Visit: https://lsa.umich.edu/ummnh/visitors/things-to-do/farrand-lecture.html\n\nThe University of Michigan Museum of Natural History and the College of Literature\, Science and the Arts (LSA) greatly value inclusion and access for all. We are pleased to provide reasonable accommodations to enable your full participation in this event. Please contact Brea Haywood at breahay@umich.edu if you would like to request disability accommodations or have any questions or concerns. We ask that you provide advance notice to ensure sufficient time to meet requested accommodations.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:*Diamonds by the Decade*: The Best of CJS 75th Anniversary Film Series | *Death By Hanging*
DESCRIPTION:Tickets may be purchased at: https://myumi.ch/DJ9Q6\n\nGenius provocateur Nagisa Oshima\, an influential figure in the Japanese New Wave of the 1960s\, made one of his most startling political statements with the compelling pitch-black satire *Death by Hanging*. In this macabre farce\, a Korean man is sentenced to death in Japan but survives his execution\, sending the authorities into a panic about what to do next. At once disturbing and oddly amusing\, Oshima’s constantly surprising film is a subversive and surreal indictment of both capital punishment and the treatment of Korean immigrants in his country. Look for former CJS guest Adachi Masao playing the role of a cop. \n\nRead more about the film\, including ratings\, at the IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063198/mediaviewer/rm1513185536/?ref_=tt_ov_i\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Rollie Tussing Trio
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning guitarist\, educator\, and performer Rollie Tussing makes a raggedy brand of music informed by the era of 78 rpm records\, juke joints\, and street performers. He composes a lot of his own songs and has a knack for reworking an old obscure tune\, finding beauty in the forgotten scratches\, pops and grooves of his esoteric record collection. After winning the National Slide Guitar Competition in 2001 Rollie moved with his wife to Portland\, Oregon. He spent the next decade touring\, performing\, writing songs and playing with some of the best regional and touring musicians the West Coast offered. In 2011 with their second child on the way\, Rollie and his wife decided to relocate to the Midwest to be closer to family and to tap into the artistic resources in the nation's midsection. There’s fingerstyle guitar\, forgotten old music\, and great old songs—a fabulous evening all around.
