SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Global Health Supply Chain Summit 2022
DESCRIPTION:RE-IMAGINING HEALTH SUPPLY CHAIN AND SYSTEMS FOR EQUITY\, RESILIENCY\, and COUNTRY OWNERSHIP\n\nThe last couple of years have highlighted several vulnerabilities in country health systems impacting not only their response to the pandemic but also their ability to continue to address other routine health issues. In the past two GHSCS events\, we have discussed some of these issues taking stock of how supply chains have managed to cope with such stress\, and discussed strategies that need to be developed to address the gaps and vulnerabilities on their journey to recovery. Looking beyond the pandemic\, it is now being widely recognized that health systems\, and supply chains supporting them\, need to be transformed to address health issues in a holistic and integrated manner ensuring equitable access and increasing self-sufficiency. We need to develop next generation resilient health systems and the supply chains that support them\, leveraging partnerships\, bottom-up innovations\, financing\, workforce\, and governance models to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all. A holistic and systems-based approach towards health systems and supply chains is needed to ensure end-to-end service delivery supporting diagnostics\, essential medicines\, and health care products to address current health issues as well as the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.\n\nGHSCS 2022 will explore these issues through a combination of keynotes\, panel discussions\, and contributed talks. Like in the past\, the conference will assemble a collection of experts that include government representatives\, academics\, NGOs\, civil society\, industry\, donor and multilateral representatives to explore these topics. The committee is particularly interested in capturing the voices from the field to learn and share experiences related to the conference theme and mechanisms to achieve progress.\n\nFeaturing Keynote/Plenary speakers:\nHonorable Health Minister of Senegal (TBC)\nDr. Amadou Alpha Sall\, Executive Director\, IPD Dakar\nDr. Yodi Alakija\, WHO Special Envoy for the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (Tentative)\nMr. Apoorva Kumar\, Founder/CEO\, Jumia\n\nPlenary Panels:\n1. Ecosystem services to support pharma manufacturing in Africa\n2. Enhanced access to public health commodities through harmonized regulatory processes\n3. Access to NCD Care – Diabetes\n4. Innovation & Entrepreneurship\n\n~ ALSO FEATURING~\n(Up to) 30 Curated Presentations\nPoster Exhibits\nPrize Competition

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Hannes Leeb\, Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nWe show that two popular selective inference procedures\, namely data carving and selection with a randomized response\, when combined with the polyhedral method\, result in confidence intervals whose length is bounded. This contrasts results for confidence intervals based on the polyhedral method alone\, whose expected length is typically infinite. Moreover\, we show that these two procedures always dominate corresponding sample-splitting methods in terms of interval length.\n\nHannes Leeb is a Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Vienna. \n\nhttps://ufind.univie.ac.at/en/person.html?id=17473

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Making Life in the Aftermath of War in Lao PDR
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Summary: After the end of the US wars in Southeast Asia\, Laos faded from historical and contemporary interest. Eighty million unexploded bombs remain in the soil\, from more than 270 million bombs dropped in Laos over a period of nine years (1964‐1973). People in Laos have taken creative\, critical\, and sometimes deadly measures to extricate themselves from the large quantities of war metal embedded throughout the country. Some have recycled\, melted\, and transformed war metals into commodities for consumption\, while others have collected and displayed empty bomb casings in their homes and businesses as a record of the US air war in Laos. Bringing together the relationship between war and the environment\, this talk examines how cluster bomb metals are circulated and consumed\, and how such actions shape life-making practices in the war’s aftermath.\n \n Davorn Sisavath is assistant professor in the Department of Asian American Studies at California State University\, Fullerton. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Beyond the Written Record: Exploring Past Sounds\, Tastes\, Smells\, Vistas\, and Touches
DESCRIPTION:An EIHS Multi-sensory Presentation Series and Roundtable Discussion\n\nThe past does not just consist of written words which are stowed away in archives. Just like we today\, historical actors gained a sense of themselves and their surroundings through sounds\, tastes\, smells\, vistas\, and touches. What are ways through which historians can retrieve these past sensory experiences\, and to what extent do they allow us to extend our engagement with the past beyond the confines of conventional historiography? In this EIHS graduate student workshop\, our panelists explore these questions by shedding light on the “tactile semiotics” of fifteen-century tapestries and seventeen-century copper engravings\, the visual imaginings of temple sanctuaries in ancient Greece\, and the significance of the roaring boom of a cannon for a living history reenactment at an eighteen-century fort in upstate New York. As part of the EIHS graduate student workshop series\, we strive to create an inclusive\, collegial\, and affirmative forum of exchange where participants can test and experiment with ideas which they might not yet feel comfortable enough to present in more formalized settings. Please join us in creating such a forum for our four panelists who set out to explore the potentialities of and challenges to histories which are multisensorial in character.\n\nPanelists:\n\n• Genevra Higginson (PhD student\, History of Art\, University of Michigan)\n• Julia LaPlace (PhD Candidate\, History of Art\, University of Michigan)\n• Ginevra Miglierina (PhD Candidate\, Classical Studies\, University of Michigan)\n• Estrella Salgado (MA Student\, Educational Studies\, University of Michigan)\n• Helmut Puff\, moderator (Elizabeth L. Eisenstein Collegiate Professor of History and Germanic Languages\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Investigating the Production Choices of Ancient Potters in Southeast Italy and Albania
DESCRIPTION:Matt-painted pottery from Salento (southeast Italy) has many particular traits\, especially from the 8th century BCE onward\, that has in the past led to hypotheses that local potters were influenced by non-local objects and people to produce vessels in new shapes and make use of new motifs. In this talk\, I discuss the methods that can be used to evaluate the production methods used by ancient potters to determine the presence or absence of interaction between different communities of practice. The case study presented here considers pottery from Taranto\, Italy and the area around Korçë\, Albania.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:From intra- to inter- generational scaling laws governing long-term stochastic individual cell dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Over 150 years since Claude Bernard coined the evocative phrase\, “milieu intérieur”\, to draw attention to a deep mystery in the natural world\, fundamental questions remain open about how the simplest living system\, a bacterial cell\, maintains homeostasis of its best studied attribute\, cell size. In this talk I will address how life shapes time in a bacterial cell\, and examine the interplay between homeostasis and adaptation in this context. First\, I will first establish that stochastic intergenerational bacterial cell homeostasis_is_ maintained under appropriate growth conditions\, using our precision measurements. Next\, the emergent simplicities revealed by these data. Following this\, a fitting-free theoretical framework\, consistent with observed scaling laws and phenomenology. This naturally leads to a proposal for the underlying mechanistic model. Finally\, the extension to time-varying growth conditions\, and new emergent simplicities

No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and meditation.\n\nRelaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions\, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically\, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony. \n\n*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708\n\n*Event Details*\n\nHeartfulness Guided Meditation \nFridays from 12-12:30 p.m. ET (except during university season days / holidays)\nJoin Via Zoom Meeting\nRegister to receive Passcode (see “Related links”\n\n\nThis wellness program is coordinated by ITS Teaching & Learning and provided at no cost by heartfulness.org.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LSA Workshop: Inclusive & Effective Alt Text for Images
DESCRIPTION:Images and graphics can be powerful tools to communicate information and enhance text content. But some individuals—such as those who are Blind\, low vision\, or use read aloud technologies—may miss out on important details if our visuals are not accessible. \n\nThis workshop will teach you how to craft effective \"alternative text\" (alt text) and how to add alt text to images to make them more accessible. We'll also discuss how to describe image content\, including diverse humans\, in a way that is inclusive and context appropriate.\n\nParticipants will learn:\n1. What alt text is\, why it is important\, and who benefits from it.\n\n2. Image types that are not accessible and workarounds.\n\n3. How to craft effective alt text for images based upon the image type and function.\n\n4. Best practices for describing diverse people and situations depicted in images in an inclusive way.\n\n5. How to add alt text to images in Word\, Google Docs\, PowerPoint\, and Google Slides.\n\nAudience:\nThis is a beginner-level workshop open to any LSA employee\, including our student employees.\n\nFormat:\nThis workshop will be conducted virtually on Zoom. Auto-captioning will be enabled and slides will be distributed following the workshop. We strongly recommend using a desktop or laptop computer to join this workshop\, as this will make it easier to apply what you learn in practice exercises and to participate in poll questions.\n\nThe LSA DEI Office greatly values inclusion and access for all. We are pleased to provide reasonable accommodations to enable your full participation in this workshop. Please contact Jessica McCuaig at jmccuaig@umich.edu if you would like to request disability accommodations or have any questions or concerns.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ravena Landscape Project: wetlands and coastal archaeology around a Byzantine capital
DESCRIPTION:The study of coastal and lowland landscapes is a challenge for archaeology\, as the high geomorphological dynamicity of such ecosystems often limits archaeological research in these areas. The Ravenna Landscape Project systematically investigates the hinterland of Ravenna (northern Italy)\, a major Roman and Medieval city that developed over time in a complex\, marginal landscape. The project presented here aims to offer a way forward to overcome the limits represented by complex geomorphological dynamics and introduce new approaches to studying the local landscape. The lecture will consider the latest results of the project\, focusing in particular on the methodologies applied as well as the main goals achieved.\n\nThis HYBRID event will be held in in person at the School of Education Room 2327 Brownlee Room\, and also livestreamed via Zoom at link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/93550588643

SUMMARY:Presentation:Where Science Meets Humanity: A Conversation with Dr. Mousumi Banerjee
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Global Health Equity’s 2022-2023 Academic Year Seminar Series will feature global health luminaries from around the world. The goals of these conversations are to provide audience members with an intimate glimpse of the professional and personal journeys of key global health advocates\, critical challenges they see in the field\, and how academic centers can contribute to relevant solutions.\n\nDr. Banerjee’s global work focuses on the utilization of machine learning and modeling approaches to optimize healthcare quality and ensure equitable delivery of care\, specifically for women and in communities where disparities in healthcare outcomes can be reduced. As COVID-19 arrived in her home country of India over two years ago\, Banerjee stepped into new roles as a go-to expert—offering advice to heads of state\, appearing on international news shows\, and organizing charitable giving.\n\nDr. Banerjee will discuss her experiences in India and Bangladesh that led to a transformation in how she understands her role in global public health. Banerjee will share how her trip to India in spring 2021\, when the country was ravaged by its worst Covid wave\, was the first time she truly saw the human side of the data she engages with daily as a biostatistician and how this has forever changed her approach to her work.\n\nLearn more and register for the zoom session\nmyumi.ch/e6NgV

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Does History Matter for Organizations?
DESCRIPTION:Path dependence and imprinting are two important but distinct theoretical lenses to understand persistent effects of the past. While both concepts focus on how history has a lasting effect\, they differ substantially in terms of how the past effect is formed\, in particular (a) the importance of initial conditions (weak versus strong) and (b) the mechanism sustaining the historical effect (self-reinforcement versus inertia). To differentiate the two perspectives theoretically and empirically\, we conduct a study of firm innovation—a context in which prior research has examined both path dependence and imprinting processes—with a longitudinal sample of U.S. publicly traded companies from 1981 to 2010. We find that prominent features of the founding environment and firms’ founding inventors strongly and enduringly affect patenting behaviors\, and that after including initial condition variables that tap imprinting processes\, effects of variables representing path dependence become substantially weakened. Our results suggest that imprinting and path dependence should be better differentiated in sociological research\, and that prior research on path dependence may be mis-specified because of ignoring founding conditions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department Colloquia: A Stoic and Socratic Theory of Motivation
DESCRIPTION:A Stoic and Socratic Theory of Motivation\n\nStoic moral psychology—dominant for several centuries within the Greek and Roman philosophical tradition—centrally includes a phenomenon designated by the Greek term hormê\, which translators have variously rendered as appetitio\, 'conation\,' 'impulse\,' 'desire\,' Trieb\, tendance\, and (more recently) 'effort.' Hormai\, of which the pathê or emotions are central instances\, are characterized in the Greek sources both as representations with proposition-like content and as motions in some way directed towards an intentional object. Accordingly\, they puzzlingly appear to have\, and perhaps even to integrate\, both belief- and desire-like features. I consider this element of Stoic theory against both its Socratic background and contemporary accounts of motivation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | A top-down dictionary for double holography
DESCRIPTION:Holographic interpretations of Randall-Sundrum (RS) branes provide a laboratory to explore the way quantum information evolves in field theories coupled to gravity. Despite this importance\, the holographic interpretation of RS branes in terms of a theory of gravity coupled to a CFT is rather ad-hoc. In this talk\, we use top-down constructions of RS branes in order to work out a precise dictionary for this \"intermediate\" holographic prescription\, resolving serious causality problems of the naive picture often used in the literature while preserving many of the successes of the RS construction

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Graham Slater\, University of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Morphology often relates to ecology in a well-defined manner\, enabling prediction of ecological roles for taxa that lack direct observations\, such a fossils. Diet is a particularly important component of a species' ecology. However\, in order to predict diet it must first be codified\, and establishing metrics that effectively summarize dietary variability without excessive information loss remains challenging. I will show how a dietary-item relative importance coding scheme can be used to derive multivariate dietary classifications for a sample of extant carnivoran mammals\, and then used Bayesian multilevel modeling to assess whether that these scores can be predicted from a set of dental metrics\, using body size as a covariate. There is no ``one size fits all'' model for predicting dietary item importance but model-averaged estimates perform especially well. I will show how models derived from living taxa can be used to provide novel insights into the dietary ecology of a few extinct carnivoran species. Significantly\, this approach need not be limited to diet as an ecological trait of interest\, to these phenotypic traits\, or to carnivorans. Rather\, this framework serves as a general approach to predicting multivariate ecology from phenotypic traits.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | “Bazaar Rumors” or “All Facts”? Film Sound Debates and the Transition to Sound in Indian Cinema
DESCRIPTION:This talk will analyze competing film sound technologies during the period of conversion to sound in Indian cinema (1931 to 1935)\, with a special focus on claims about swadeshi (or indigenously developed) recording equipment. Using ads for sound recording and projection equipment\, as well as reports by and about salesmen-technicians\, such as the Americans Wilford Deming and C. Willman\, the talk explores ideas about sound technologies circulating in 1930s India. Using the lens of “imaginary media” as theorized by media archaeologists\, the talk will focus on “impossible” machines such as the locally developed tropically sensitive sound machines advertised in Indian film magazines in the early 1930s for “understanding the assumptions concerning media technological innovations” (Parikka). Contrary to one of these ads\, it is precisely “bazaar rumors” rather than “all facts” that shed light on the discourse of sound recording in the early 1930s.\n \nNeepa Majumdar is Associate Professor of Film & Media Studies in the English Department at the University of Pittsburgh. She is the author of *Wanted Cultured Ladies Only! Female Stardom and Cinema in India\, 1930s to 1950s* (University of Illinois Press\, 2009) and co-editor of the *Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Indian Cinema* (2022). Her research interests include film sound\, star studies\, South Asian early cinema\, and documentary film. She is co-editor of the journals *[In]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film and Moving Image Studies* and *Music\, Sound\, and the Moving Image*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact csas@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Other:The Fording Tiger: Two Painting Colophons by Yang Weizhen in the Lo Chia-Lun Collection of Chinese Calligraphy\, lecture and Q&A with Dr. Amy McNair
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRU8qbd_Wq4.\n \nEarlier this year\, UMMA received a transformative gift of more than 70 works of important and influential Chinese calligraphy. The Lo Chia-Lun Calligraphy Collection adds an impressive breadth of works to an already stellar collection of Chinese paintings and ceramics at UMMA. To mark the occasion\, UMMA and the U-M Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies are delighted to present this important lecture with Chinese Art Historian\, Dr. Amy McNair. McNair will discuss works in the collection by the famous Yuan-dynasty poet\, Yang Weizhen (1296-1370)\, and highlight the importance of the Lo Chia-Lun Collection in the future studies of Chinese calligraphy. These works are colophons (a publisher's emblem or imprint) to one or two lost paintings\, called The Fording Tiger\, and are superb examples of his intentionally eccentric\, awkward style of writing. The “fording tiger” image comes from the story of the Han-dynasty official Liu Kun (d. 57 CE)\, whose reputation for good government was so powerful that when he arrived to govern Hongnong (modern Sanmenxia\, Henan)\, the local man-eating tigers swam across the Yellow River rather than face him. Yang was instrumental in establishing the importance of colophons on paintings and reviving the practice of yuefu poetry in the 14th century\, making these two colophons containing yuefu poems highly significant works. \n \nPrior to the keynote\, we are delighted to offer a rare opportunity to see works from the Lo Chia-Lun collection in UMMA’s object study rooms. You must register for a study room session. Please register for only one time slot. Capacity is extremely limited.\n \nBoth study sessions are currently full. You can register for the waitlist below. \n \n Waitlist for 4:30 p.m. Study Session 2\n \nMore about Dr. Amy McNair Amy McNair is a Professor of Chinese Art History at the University of Kansas and Editor-in-chief of the Asian art history journal Artibus Asiae. Her research interests are Chinese calligraphy and painting\, and Chinese Buddhist sculpture. Her 1998 book on the Tang-dynasty calligrapher Yan Zhenqing was recently translated into Chinese as 中正之笔——颜真卿书法与宋代文人政治 (The Righteous Pen—Yan Zhenqing's Calligraphy and the Song Dynasty Literati Politics). Her latest book\, The Stigma of the Painting Master: Liang Shicheng and The Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings\, will appear in 2023\, published by Harvard Asia Center Publications.\n \nPlease join us after Dr. McNair’s talk for refreshments in the UMMA Apse.  \n\nThis workshop is made possible by the U-M Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, the Department of History of Art\, and the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Endowment for Chinese Art. The Lo Chia-Lun Calligraphy Collection at UMMA is the gift of Jiu-Fong Lo Chang and Kuei-sheng Chang.
