SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:China and the Global human rights system
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, China’s human rights practices have been the subject of mounting international attention and concern. Crackdowns on protesters\, the situation in Xinjiang\, and other developments have raised questions about international actors’ willingness and ability to address human rights issues within China. This virtual panel will examine China’s relationship with the global human rights system. Three noted experts will share insights drawn from academic study\, civil society engagement\, and diplomatic practice. They will discuss how China advances its objectives relating to human rights within international forums\, examining how China promotes its ideas and seeks to shape the institutional design of bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council\, the UN Security Council\, and the Chinese-led South-South Forum on Human Rights. They will analyze how China has sought to constrain these and other key human rights institutions and mechanisms and the practical effects of its efforts on human rights behavior\, and share insights about the challenges and opportunities for diplomacy and for civil society engagement to address China’s human rights practices and those of other authoritarian states.\n\nFrom the speakers' bios\n\nPanelists\nSarah M. Brooks is Program Director for the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR)\, a leading non-governmental organization committed to promoting and protecting human rights. She provides strategic guidance for ISHR programs\, leads its work to support Chinese human rights defenders\, and engages the EU and European states on foreign policy and human rights. Previously she worked as a Foreign Affairs Officer at the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Labor. She is a Ford School alumna with Master’s degrees in Public Policy and Chinese Studies from the University of Michigan.\n\nRosemary Foot is Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford’s Department of Politics and International Relations. She is also an associate of Oxford’s China Centre and an Emeritus Fellow of St. Antony’s College\, where she served as Professor of International Relations and the John Swire Senior Research Fellow in the International Relations of East Asia. She has published widely on topics including China-U.S. relations\, Chinese foreign policy\, international politics in Asia\, and international human rights and human protection regimes.\n\nRana Siu Inboden is a senior fellow at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at The University of Texas at Austin. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:CMENAS Fall Colloquium. Higher Ed between Soft Power and Social Forces
DESCRIPTION:2022 CMENAS Fall Colloquium: Higher Education & Reformation across the MENA: A Geopolitical Exploration\n\n“Higher Ed between Soft Power and Social Forces”\n\nNeema Noori & Pia-Kristina Anderson: *Exporting the American Model of Education to the Gulf*\n\nIn the current context of globalization\, social scientists have examined the mechanisms by which organizational practices are transferred when transnational corporations establish subsidiaries in other countries. Comparatively little work\, however\, has been done on the challenges of transplanting\, from one cultural and political context to another\, an institution of higher education or a particular model for how higher education should be practiced. Our talk will focus on the political\, economic\, and cultural challenges of exporting the “American model of education” to the Arab States of the Gulf.\n \nNeha Vora: *Teach for Arabia: American universities\, liberalism\, and the transnational Gulf*\n \nTeach for Arabia offers an ethnographic account of the experiences of students\, faculty\, and administrators in Education City\, Qatar. Education City\, home to the branch campuses of six elite American universities\, represents the Qatari government's multibillion-dollar investment over the last two decades in growing a local knowledge-based economy. Though leaders have eagerly welcomed these institutions\, not all citizens embrace the US universities in their midst. Some critics see them as emblematic of a turn away from traditional values toward Westernization. Qatari students who attend these schools often feel stereotyped and segregated within their spaces. Neha Vora considers how American branch campuses influence notions of identity and citizenship among both citizen and non-citizen residents and contribute to national imaginings of the future and a transnational Qatar. Looking beyond the branch campus\, she also confronts mythologies of liberal and illiberal peoples\, places\, and ideologies that have developed around these universities. Supporters and detractors alike of branch campuses have long ignored the imperial histories of American universities and the exclusions and inequalities that continue to animate daily academic life. From the vantage point of Qatar\, Teach for Arabia challenges the assumed mantle of liberalism in Western institutions and illuminates how people can contribute to decolonized university life and knowledge production.\n \nSpeaker Bios:\n\nNeha Vora is a professor of anthropology in the Department of Anthropology & Sociology at Lafayette College. Her research and teaching interests include diasporas and migration\, citizenship\, higher education\, gender\, liberalism\, political economy\, and human-nonhuman encounters in the Arabian Peninsula region and in the United States. She is the author of *Impossible Citizens: Dubai’s Indian Diaspora* (Duke University Press\, 2013) and *Teach for Arabia: American Universities\, Liberalism\, and Transnational Qatar* (Stanford University Press\, 2018). She has also published a co-authored book with Ahmed Kanna and Amelie Le Renard\, *Beyond Exception: New Interpretations of the Arabian Peninsula* (Cornell University Press\, 2020).\n \nPia-Kristina Anderson has taught at the American University in Cairo and the University of California at Santa Cruz. Her research and teaching areas include culture contact\, anthropological history\, archaeology\, cultural geography and the formation of identity. Anderson has extensive fieldwork experience both in the Middle East and in the Pacific Islands\, among other regions.\n \nNeema Noori is a professor in the Department of Anthropology\, Psychology\, and Sociology at the University of West Georgia. He received his PhD in sociology from Columbia University in 2006. After completing his dissertation\, Noori taught for three years in the Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He joined the Department of Sociology at the University of West Georgia in 2008. Noori's areas of interest include political sociology\, global higher education governance\, knowledge networks\, and state formation. To date\, his research has followed two trajectories. The first builds on his dissertation and is focused primarily on NGO and government development policy in Post-Soviet Central Asia. The second trajectory expands his regional specialization to include the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. Partly in response to witnessing the proliferation of American-style universities in the Middle East\, he has written several articles on the diffusion of the American model of higher education throughout the region.\n\nRegister to the virtual event: https://myumi.ch/AwV8e\n\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact waterbuk@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PSC Brownbag Series: Racial Discrimination in Context: The Role of Organizational Policies and Practices in Hiring Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:Hiring discrimination persists against Black job applicants in the United States\, serving as a key force in the reproduction of social and economic inequality. In this article\, we bridge the organizational inequality and hiring discrimination literatures – bodies of scholarship that have developed largely in parallel – to theorize the ways in which organizational policies and practices play an important role in shaping racial discrimination in hiring. Integrating insights from organizational theory\, we argue that organizational policies and practices that increase accountability\, transparency\, and/or relationships between workers are most likely to reduce racial discrimination in hiring. Empirically\, we examine four clusters of organizational policies and practices that vary along these dimensions: individual change programs\, public signaling efforts\, relational investments\, and structural features. Our empirical analysis draws on an original dataset that matches estimates of hiring discrimination from a field experiment with survey data about the organizations that were part of the field experiment. In line with our theoretical argument\, we do not find evidence that individual change and public signaling efforts are related to racial discrimination. However\, structural features of the organization and certain relational investments\, mentoring and networking programs with a racial emphasis\, are associated with less racial discrimination. We conclude by discussing the implications of these findings for scholarship on discrimination\, organizations\, and social inequality.\n\nThis event will be held on Zoom only and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Evidence for Cosmological Coupling of Black Holes and Its Implications For an Astrophysical Source Of Dark Energy
DESCRIPTION:Observations have found black holes spanning ten orders of magnitude in mass across most of cosmic history. The leading black hole model\, the Kerr solution\, is however provisional because its behavior at infinity is incompatible with an expanding universe. Recent work on black hole models with realistic behavior at infinity predicts that the gravitating mass of a black hole can increase with the expansion of the universe independently of accretion or mergers\, in a manner that depends on the black hole’s interior solution. Here we test this prediction by considering the growth of supermassive black holes in passively evolving elliptical galaxies over 0 < z < 2.5. We find evidence for cosmologically coupled mass growth among these black holes\, with zero cosmological coupling excluded at 99.98% confidence. The redshift dependence of the mass growth implies that\, at z < 7\, black holes contribute an effectively constant cosmological energy density to Friedmann’s equations. The continuity equation then requires that black holes contribute cosmologically as vacuum energy. We further show that\, within current observational limits\, black hole production from the cosmic star formation history gives the cosmological constant value measured by Planck. We thus propose that stellar remnant black holes are the astrophysical origin of dark energy\, explaining the late-time onset of accelerating expansion.\n

In the last ten years we have been studying genetic and environmental factors that contribute to asthma severity in children living in the metropolitan Detroit area\, as part of the NHLBI funded project: Asthma in the Lives of Families Today (ALOFT). We have performed bulk and single cell RNA-sequency in this cohort and uncovered psychosocial and genetic factors associated with asthma. I will present our findings on the dynamic genetic regulation of gene expression in response to immunomodulators and during pubertal development. I will also discuss the importance of considering environmental and developmental contexts when using molecular data to study the genetic risk of asthma and other complex traits.\n\nKeywords: Gene expression\, gene-environment interactions\, eQTL\, asthma\, single cell genomics

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 813 Seminar: Jacqueline Hannan
DESCRIPTION:Positive pressure ventilation (PPV) provides lifesaving breath support to newborns via a face mask. After birth\, approximately 10 million newborns will receive PPV with a face mask every year. As a result\, clinicians and hospital workers must be prepared to perform PPV if the infant shows signs of difficulty breathing. PPV requires a careful balance of applied force when holding the face mask against a newborn’s face\, as the clinician must provide enough pressure to form a tight seal without delivering too much pressure that could injure the newborn. Currently\, there is no standardized tool or quantitative technology to assist in training clinical staff on applying the proper amount of pressure to achieve effective ventilation. In this talk\, we discuss current PPV training and administration methods\, describe the initial design and testing of a sensor system to monitor applied pressures at key locations on a newborn’s face\, and discuss preliminary results from using this sensor system to test the effects of face mask type\, ventilation device type\, and expertise level on applied pressures.\n\nJacqueline Hannan is a doctoral student at the University of Michigan in the Industrial and Operations Engineering department. She is studying as a NIOSH trainee and is advised by Prof. Leia Stirling. Prior to attending graduate school\, Jacqueline earned her Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering with a minor in human factors from University at Buffalo. Jacqueline’s research interests lie at the intersection of human factors and healthcare. She is interested in applying concepts of ergonomics and human performance to understand and improve current practices in the medical field.\n\nThe seminar series “Providing Better Healthcare through Systems Engineering” is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multidisciplinary\, systems engineering approach.\n\nFor the Zoom link and password\, and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\,\nplease RSVP\, or contact genehkim@umich.edu

How did the humble ware\, characterized by its earthy tones\, rough surfaces\, and natural ash glazes\, achieve this status?\n \n \n \nBeginning in the 1960s\, it was collected by American museums\, studied in American publications\, and admired by American artists\, some of whom traveled to Shigaraki to learn the techniques. In the Cold War era\, Shigaraki ware was promoted as a means of fostering public support for a U.S.-Japan coalition. The ware’s simple\, rustic aesthetic was ideal to rebrand Japan as a peaceful\, democratic ally.  \n \nAfter the 1980s\, Shigaraki ware remained a locus of international exchange promoted by Japan as it rose to become an economic power. Illustrating through historic jars\, works by American artists inspired by Shigaraki ware\, and recent works by contemporary Japanese artists\, this talk will uncover the stories of Shigaraki ware and its impact in America from the postwar era into the 21st century.\n \n \n \nPresented by the Japanese Art Society of America\, this talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition Clay as Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware in Postwar America\, currently on view at the University of Michigan Museum of Art through May 7\, 2023. For more information\, please click here.\n \nNatsu Oyobe\, Ph.D.\, is Curator of Asian Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Specializing in modern and contemporary Japanese art\, she has curated numerous Japanese art exhibitions\, including Wrapped in Silk and Gold: A Family Legacy of 20th-Century Japanese Kimono (2010)\, Mari Katayama (2019)\, and Clay as Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware in Postwar America and Japan (2022). She is also involved in cross-cultural projects from a variety of historical periods\, including Isamu Noguchi and Qi Baishi: Beijing 1930 (2013). Dr. Oyobe served as a consulting curator for the Detroit Institute of Arts’ new Japan Gallery (2016 – 2017) and the Denver Art Museum (2020). She is contributor and co-editor of Great Waves and Mountains: Perspectives and Discoveries in Collecting the Arts of Japan (University Press of Florida\, 2022).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, the Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative Fund\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, and the U-M Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation\, James M. Trapp\, Nancy and Joe Keithley\, and the William C. SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Evolve: Self Care to Survive
DESCRIPTION:On June 12\, 2006\, Brandon Wolf lost two of his best friends in the Pulse Nightclub shooting tragedy\, narrowly escaping himself. That night spurred Brandon to become a fierce advocate for LGBTQ rights and gunreform in honor of his friends. In the years since\, his advocacy work has also shown him the necessity of self-care and the power of community. Brandon is firm in his belief that you have always been worthy of joy\, love\, and safety\, and will share how self-care can be both a lifeline and the utmost form of resistance.
