Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. Comparatively little work, however, has been done on the challenges of transplanting, from one cultural and political context to another, an institution of higher education or a particular model for how higher education should be practiced. Our talk will focus on the political, economic, and cultural challenges of exporting the \u201cAmerican model of education\u201d to the Arab States of the Gulf.\r\n \r\nNeha Vora: *Teach for Arabia: American universities, liberalism, and the transnational Gulf*\r\n \r\nTeach for Arabia offers an ethnographic account of the experiences of students, faculty, and administrators in Education City, Qatar. Education City, home to the branch campuses of six elite American universities, represents the Qatari government's multibillion-dollar investment over the last two decades in growing a local knowledge-based economy. Though leaders have eagerly welcomed these institutions, not all citizens embrace the US universities in their midst. Some critics see them as emblematic of a turn away from traditional values toward Westernization. Qatari students who attend these schools often feel stereotyped and segregated within their spaces. Neha Vora considers how American branch campuses influence notions of identity and citizenship among both citizen and non-citizen residents and contribute to national imaginings of the future and a transnational Qatar. Looking beyond the branch campus, she also confronts mythologies of liberal and illiberal peoples, places, and ideologies that have developed around these universities. Supporters and detractors alike of branch campuses have long ignored the imperial histories of American universities and the exclusions and inequalities that continue to animate daily academic life. From the vantage point of Qatar, Teach for Arabia challenges the assumed mantle of liberalism in Western institutions and illuminates how people can contribute to decolonized university life and knowledge production.\r\n \r\nSpeaker Bios:\r\n\r\nNeha Vora is a professor of anthropology in the Department of Anthropology & Sociology at Lafayette College. Her research and teaching interests include diasporas and migration, citizenship, higher education, gender, liberalism, political economy, and human-nonhuman encounters in the Arabian Peninsula region and in the United States. She is the author of *Impossible Citizens: Dubai\u2019s Indian Diaspora* (Duke University Press, 2013) and *Teach for Arabia: American Universities, Liberalism, and Transnational Qatar* (Stanford University Press, 2018). She has also published a co-authored book with Ahmed Kanna and Amelie Le Renard, *Beyond Exception: New Interpretations of the Arabian Peninsula* (Cornell University Press, 2020).\r\n \r\nPia-Kristina Anderson has taught at the American University in Cairo and the University of California at Santa Cruz. Her research and teaching areas include culture contact, anthropological history, archaeology, cultural geography and the formation of identity. Anderson has extensive fieldwork experience both in the Middle East and in the Pacific Islands, among other regions.\r\n \r\nNeema Noori is a professor in the Department of Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology at the University of West Georgia. He received his PhD in sociology from Columbia University in 2006. After completing his dissertation, Noori taught for three years in the Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He joined the Department of Sociology at the University of West Georgia in 2008. Noori's areas of interest include political sociology, global higher education governance, knowledge networks, and state formation. To date, his research has followed two trajectories. The first builds on his dissertation and is focused primarily on NGO and government development policy in Post-Soviet Central Asia. The second trajectory expands his regional specialization to include the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. In this article, we bridge the organizational inequality and hiring discrimination literatures \u2013 bodies of scholarship that have developed largely in parallel \u2013 to theorize the ways in which organizational policies and practices play an important role in shaping racial discrimination in hiring. Integrating insights from organizational theory, we argue that organizational policies and practices that increase accountability, transparency, and\/or relationships between workers are most likely to reduce racial discrimination in hiring. Empirically, we examine four clusters of organizational policies and practices that vary along these dimensions: individual change programs, public signaling efforts, relational investments, and structural features. Our empirical analysis draws on an original dataset that matches estimates of hiring discrimination from a field experiment with survey data about the organizations that were part of the field experiment. In line with our theoretical argument, we do not find evidence that individual change and public signaling efforts are related to racial discrimination. However, structural features of the organization and certain relational investments, mentoring and networking programs with a racial emphasis, are associated with less racial discrimination. The leading black hole model, the Kerr solution, is however provisional because its behavior at infinity is incompatible with an expanding universe. Recent work on black hole models with realistic behavior at infinity predicts that the gravitating mass of a black hole can increase with the expansion of the universe independently of accretion or mergers, in a manner that depends on the black hole\u2019s interior solution. Here we test this prediction by considering the growth of supermassive black holes in passively evolving elliptical galaxies over 0 < z < 2.5. We find evidence for cosmologically coupled mass growth among these black holes, with zero cosmological coupling excluded at 99.98% confidence. The redshift dependence of the mass growth implies that, at z < 7, black holes contribute an effectively constant cosmological energy density to Friedmann\u2019s equations. The continuity equation then requires that black holes contribute cosmologically as vacuum energy. We further show that, within current observational limits, black hole production from the cosmic star formation history gives the cosmological constant value measured by Planck. We thus propose that stellar remnant black holes are the astrophysical origin of dark energy, explaining the late-time onset of accelerating expansion.\n", "occurrence_notes":null, After birth, approximately 10 million newborns will receive PPV with a face mask every year. As a result, clinicians and hospital workers must be prepared to perform PPV if the infant shows signs of difficulty breathing. PPV requires a careful balance of applied force when holding the face mask against a newborn\u2019s face, as the clinician must provide enough pressure to form a tight seal without delivering too much pressure that could injure the newborn. Currently, there is no standardized tool or quantitative technology to assist in training clinical staff on applying the proper amount of pressure to achieve effective ventilation. In this talk, we discuss current PPV training and administration methods, describe the initial design and testing of a sensor system to monitor applied pressures at key locations on a newborn\u2019s face, and discuss preliminary results from using this sensor system to test the effects of face mask type, ventilation device type, and expertise level on applied pressures.\r\n\r\nJacqueline Hannan is a doctoral student at the University of Michigan in the Industrial and Operations Engineering department. She is studying as a NIOSH trainee and is advised by Prof. Leia Stirling. How did the humble ware, characterized by its earthy tones, rough surfaces, and natural ash glazes, achieve this status?\n \n\u00a0\n \nBeginning in the 1960s, it was collected by American museums, studied in American publications, and admired by American artists, some of whom traveled to Shigaraki to learn the techniques. In the Cold War era, Shigaraki ware was promoted as a means of fostering public support for a U.S.-Japan coalition. The ware\u2019s simple, rustic aesthetic was ideal to rebrand Japan as a peaceful, democratic ally. \u00a0\n \nAfter the 1980s, Shigaraki ware remained a locus of international exchange promoted by Japan as it rose to become an economic power.\u00a0Illustrating through historic jars, works by American artists inspired by Shigaraki ware, and recent works by contemporary Japanese artists,\u00a0this talk will uncover the stories of Shigaraki ware and its impact in America from the postwar era into the 21st\u00a0century.\n \n\u00a0\n \nPresented by the Japanese Art Society of America, this talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition\u00a0Clay as Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware in Postwar America,\u00a0currently on view at the University of Michigan Museum of Art through May 7, 2023. Specializing in modern and contemporary Japanese art, she has curated numerous Japanese art exhibitions, including\u00a0Wrapped in Silk and Gold: A Family Legacy of 20th-Century\u00a0Japanese Kimono\u00a0(2010),\u00a0Mari Katayama\u00a0(2019), and\u00a0Clay as Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware in Postwar America and Japan\u00a0(2022). She is also involved in cross-cultural projects from a variety of historical periods, including\u00a0Isamu Noguchi and Qi Baishi: Beijing 1930\u00a0(2013). Dr. Oyobe served as a consulting curator for the Detroit Institute of Arts\u2019 new Japan Gallery (2016 \u2013 2017) and the Denver Art Museum (2020).
