SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biopsychology Colloquium - Cooperative relationships in vampire bats
DESCRIPTION:Female vampire bats regurgitate portions of their blood meals to help unfed bats in need. These food donations occur reciprocally among both kin and nonkin. This observation was a classic textbook example of \"reciprocal altruism\" (or reciprocity)-- the idea that cooperation is stable because cooperative investments are conditional on cooperative returns. However\, this explanation for nonkin sharing has become increasingly controversial over time as various authors have proposed alternative explanations. I will review what is known about how vampire bats make helping decisions and show evidence that food sharing in vampire bats has origins in maternal care and kin selection\, but is now stabilized by multiple (possibly interacting) forces of enforcement and assortment. I will highlight the underappreciated factor that the degree of fitness interdependence in social relationships can change continuously over time and that studying how cooperative relationships form provides key insights into their functions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Redemption\, Raids\, and Restitution: The “Tail” of Private Ownership in the Early People’s Republic of China
DESCRIPTION:What Karl Marx termed the “expropriation of the expropriators” and PLA Marshal Lin Biao referred to as “getting property” was key Chinese Communist Party’s industrial strategy and essential to building socialism. In the People’s Republic of China\, state control over industry and commerce was achieved in the mid-1950s through a policy of redemption\; a controversial solution that preserved a residue of private ownership within the socialist system and determined the fraught relationship between the government and former business owners through the Cultural Revolution and into the early years of Reform and Opening.\n \n Puck Engman is Assistant Professor at the Department of History at the University of California\, Berkeley. In the academic year 2022-2023\, he is a faculty fellow with the UC Berkeley Social Sciences Matrix. He is currently working on a book that examines how the Chinese state defined and attempted to solve the problem of capitalists following the takeover of private enterprises and the integration of the management in a socialist system. He is the co-editor of \"Victims\, Perpetrators and the Role of Law in Maoist China: A Case-Study Approach\" (De Gruyter 2018\, with Daniel Leese) and author of “What Right to Property when Rebellion is Justified? Revolution and Restitution in Shanghai” (in \"Justice after Mao: The Politics of Historical Truth in the People’s Republic of China\,\" edited by Daniel Leese and Amanda Shuman\, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press).\n \nZoom registration link:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FK4Jxg6zQQS36iqtT78wUg\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Well-being:DIY Affirmation Jars
DESCRIPTION:Affirmation Jars are containers to hold positive messages\, motivational quotes\, helpful mantras\, etc. See an example here: https://www.etsy.com/fi-en/listing/813121474/positive-affirmations-jar-diy. We're gonna make some! Oftentimes these jars will contain positive affirmations about our bodies or our appearance\, such as \"I am beautiful/cute/handsome.\" For this activity\, we want to focus on non-physical affirmations\, ie \"I am intelligent\" or \"I make the world a better place.\" We hope that we can learn from one another about what we each find affirming. Once the jars are full\, we'll put them in the FRB Atrium with signs saying \"Take one!\" or \"Read me!\" so that everyone in our building can snag a little bit of much-needed positivity as the semester ends. This activity is funded by Central Student Government.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PhD Researach Talk: Seokhyun Chung
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary advances in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have realized the emergence of smart & connected systems\, where physical units (or devices) that acquire data are connected through a central cloud with intelligence. Increased connectivity across units provides significant opportunities for improving smart analytics through sharing knowledge across units\, but\, at the same time\, reveals critical challenges. First\, skyrocketing data scale is beginning to overwhelm computing\, storage\, and bandwidth resources in the central cloud. Second\, personalized analytics is indispensable as units often operate in different environments or have unique features. Third\, real-time data collection in smart & connected systems necessitates adapting a smart analytics model to the new data collected. \n\nIn this talk\, I will present two approaches that address the challenges above\, based on a collaborative strategy that distributes learning efforts to the units at the edge while keeping their data stored locally. First\, I will discuss a method where physical units collaboratively estimate a multi-output Gaussian process model by exploiting the natural hierarchy of smart & connected systems. Next\, I will discuss a two-step approach that (i) finds a well-generalized solution lying in flat minima on the loss surface through distributed computation across units and then (ii) personalizes the learned model to new units without losing old knowledge. Real-world applications for the prediction of lithium-ion battery degradation\, condition monitoring signals of turbofan engines\, and missing climate data highlight the advantageous features of the proposed models. The talk concludes with some interesting future directions.\n\n\nPresenter Bio:\nSeokhyun Chung is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial & Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan\, where he is advised by Dr. Raed Al Kontar. His research interests broadly lie in data-driven predictive analytics and decision-making for smart & connected systems. His current research explores collaborative and distributed analytics where Internet of Things-enabled entities (e.g.\, smartphones\, electric vehicles\, and wearable devices) exploit their edge computing power to build smart analytics collaboratively. He has been nominated as a finalist in the Quality\, Statistics\, & Reliability (QSR) Best refereed paper competition at INFORMS 2022 and the Quality Control & Reliability Engineering (QCRE) Best student paper competition at IISE 2021.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Topological Magnetic Defects in Frustrated Magnets
DESCRIPTION:Magnetic domain walls and their crossings as magnetic vortices are typical magnetic topological defects existing in many magnetic materials. While visualizing them and their evolution under field at the atomic level are rarely reported except for magnetic skyrmions. Here I will present the proliferation of topological magnetic defects in a 2D square lattice under field\, seen by neutrons.\n\nBy introducing Ising spins in a 2-dimensional (2D) bi-layer square lattice\, we realized a frustrated magnet where no long-range magnetic order was found upon cooling to 100 mK. Using the local magnetic susceptibility method with polarized neutrons\, we revealed canted Ising spins. With this information\, we were able to simulate the neutron diffuse scattering patterns observed under selected magnetic fields through machine learning assisted spin Hamiltonian optimization. Our studies revealed a short-range ordered 2D stripe magnetic phase wrapped by domain-wall phases. By applying magnetic field perpendicular to the square-lattice plane\, the stripe magnetic phase melts and the condensed domain wall phases form a short-range ordered vortex lattice\, so-called magnetic vortex liquid state\, at a critical field of 2 T. Further application of the magnetic field to 4 T\, makes all of the spins canted to the field direction\, i.e.\, a polarized paramagnetic phase. Here the evolution of stripe phase and domain wall phase can be precisely controlled by a magnetic field and tracked by neutron scattering. A Z4 vortex was found to be originated from two crossed domain walls. While the density of the domain wall and vortices increase with the field and reach their maximum before entering the fully polarized paramagnetic phase. \n\n*The research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)\, Early Career Research Program Award KC0402020 and used resources at the HFIR and SNS\, DOE Office of Science User Facilities operated by ORNL.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAAS Africa Workshop with Andrea Cassatella (Makerere University)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nWhat are the conditions of possibility for epistemic and cultural decolonisation? This paper addresses this question through the work of Frantz Fanon with a view to illuminating the relevance of a complex understanding of translation to broad processes of decolonisation in Africa. The central premise is that without an analysis of Africa’s post-colonial present in relation to psychic life – as referring to the psycho-affective\, somatic and spiritual dimensions of human existence – the deeper roots of ongoing attachments to colonial archives and their afterlife\, as well as key cultural and spiritual resources for addressing trauma and re-imagining the future\, risk remaining unaddressed. Proceeding through a critical-theoretical analysis of\, especially\, Fanon’s psychiatric writings (2015)\, the paper suggests that his work opens up the space for thinking of translation (“transmutation”) as an analytical and transformative praxis through which to reclaim the epistemic and political value of African cultural sources and experiences. On the one hand\, Fanon illuminates the epistemological significance of attending to psychic life for mobilizing a critical function of translation beyond models of colonial assimilation. On the other hand\, he points to the healing (literally to ‘make whole’\, or ‘restore wholeness’) possibilities that translation offers when viewed as a creative process that\, drawing from lived experience and familial cultural referents\, can contribute to the reconstitution of personality and the restoration of agency in the production of social and cultural life.\n\nAndrea Cassatella is Senior Research Fellow\, Makerere Institute of Social Research\, Makerere University

SUMMARY:Film Screening:German Film Series: Fremde Haut
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the December Film in this year's German Film Series. Directed by Angelina Maccarone and starring Iranian-German actor Jasmin Tabatabai\, this 2005 film follows Fariba\, a lesbian refugee from Iran\, as she escapes the death penalty\, navigates German bureaucracy\, endures the difficulties of securing asylum\, and encounters Western racism\, xenophobia\, and homophobia. By depicting migratory\, racial\, and sexual difference\, Maccarone describes this film as an exploration of society's dangerous polarities. Fremde Haut is a drama\, a German social critique\, and a love story that will leave you reflecting on your own definition of normal. You might find that society's line between what is \"right\" and \"wrong\" is not always as clear as it seems.
