Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. Increased connectivity across units provides significant opportunities for improving smart analytics through sharing knowledge across units, but, at the same time, reveals critical challenges. First, skyrocketing data scale is beginning to overwhelm computing, storage, and bandwidth resources in the central cloud. Second, personalized analytics is indispensable as units often operate in different environments or have unique features. Third, real-time data collection in smart & connected systems necessitates adapting a smart analytics model to the new data collected. \r\n\r\nIn this talk, I will present two approaches that address the challenges above, based on a collaborative strategy that distributes learning efforts to the units at the edge while keeping their data stored locally. First, I will discuss a method where physical units collaboratively estimate a multi-output Gaussian process model by exploiting the natural hierarchy of smart & connected systems. Next, I will discuss a two-step approach that (i) finds a well-generalized solution lying in flat minima on the loss surface through distributed computation across units and then (ii) personalizes the learned model to new units without losing old knowledge. Real-world applications for the prediction of lithium-ion battery degradation, condition monitoring signals of turbofan engines, and missing climate data highlight the advantageous features of the proposed models. The talk concludes with some interesting future directions.\r\n\r\n\r\nPresenter Bio:\r\nSeokhyun Chung is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial & Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he is advised by Dr. Raed Al Kontar. His research interests broadly lie in data-driven predictive analytics and decision-making for smart & connected systems. His current research explores collaborative and distributed analytics where Internet of Things-enabled entities (e.g., smartphones, electric vehicles, and wearable devices) exploit their edge computing power to build smart analytics collaboratively. While visualizing them and their evolution under field at the atomic level are rarely reported except for magnetic skyrmions. Here I will present the proliferation of topological magnetic defects in a 2D square lattice under field, seen by neutrons.\r\n\r\nBy introducing Ising spins in a 2-dimensional (2D) bi-layer square lattice, we realized a frustrated magnet where no long-range magnetic order was found upon cooling to 100 mK. Using the local magnetic susceptibility method with polarized neutrons, we revealed canted Ising spins. With this information, we were able to simulate the neutron diffuse scattering patterns observed under selected magnetic fields through machine learning assisted spin Hamiltonian optimization. Our studies revealed a short-range ordered 2D stripe magnetic phase wrapped by domain-wall phases. By applying magnetic field perpendicular to the square-lattice plane, the stripe magnetic phase melts and the condensed domain wall phases form a short-range ordered vortex lattice, so-called magnetic vortex liquid state, at a critical field of 2 T. Further application of the magnetic field to 4 T, makes all of the spins canted to the field direction, i.e., a polarized paramagnetic phase. Here the evolution of stripe phase and domain wall phase can be precisely controlled by a magnetic field and tracked by neutron scattering. A Z4 vortex was found to be originated from two crossed domain walls. This paper addresses this question through the work of Frantz Fanon with a view to illuminating the relevance of a complex understanding of translation to broad processes of decolonisation in Africa. The central premise is that without an analysis of Africa\u2019s post-colonial present in relation to psychic life \u2013 as referring to the psycho-affective, somatic and spiritual dimensions of human existence \u2013 the deeper roots of ongoing attachments to colonial archives and their afterlife, as well as key cultural and spiritual resources for addressing trauma and re-imagining the future, risk remaining unaddressed. Proceeding through a critical-theoretical analysis of, especially, Fanon\u2019s psychiatric writings (2015), the paper suggests that his work opens up the space for thinking of translation (\u201ctransmutation\u201d) as an analytical and transformative praxis through which to reclaim the epistemic and political value of African cultural sources and experiences. On the one hand, Fanon illuminates the epistemological significance of attending to psychic life for mobilizing a critical function of translation beyond models of colonial assimilation.
