Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \r\n\r\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \r\n\r\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine In fact, all levels of communication between Moscow and Washington \u2013 official, professional, and people-to-people \u2013 have stalled at this point. Public opinion surveys represent one of the few remaining ways for policymakers, journalists, experts, and the interested public to stay informed about attitudes in Russia today. The joint public opinion research project started by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Levada Center in 2017 provides critical information about public perceptions of central elements of the bilateral relationship and global affairs more broadly. The two most recent rounds of the survey, conducted in the United States and Russia in March and November 2022, focus on the war in Ukraine. This presentation will unpack the results of these surveys, with a specific focus on which narratives about the conflict are having the most influence on public perception, what paths to a resolution of the conflict each public might see as acceptable, and how opinion has evolved over the past year. The talk will also look to the future, touching on the threats that both publics sense going forward, and the views of younger generations of Russians and Americans. \r\n\r\nFor this hybrid lecture, Dina Smeltz will be on campus with Denis Volkov and Stepan Goncharov participating remotely. Goncharov\u2019s field of expertise and research interests include public opinion on international relations, use of media, and modern social processes in Russia. Stepan Goncharov holds a Specialist degree in Political Science from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) and has broad experience in qualitative and quantitative studies in Russia.\r\n \r\n With 30 years of experience designing and fielding international social and political surveys, Dina Smeltz joined the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in 2012. She oversees the Council's annual survey of American attitudes toward foreign policy and has authored many analyses based on that work. During her 15-year career as an opinion analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the US State Department's Office of Research, Smeltz conducted over a hundred surveys in these regions and regularly briefed senior government officials on key research findings. She has published in The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Politico, Newsweek, War on the Rocks, The National Interest, among other sources.\r\n \r\n Denis Volkov is a Russian sociologist, in 2021 he was appointed as a new director of the Levada Center, a Moscow based independent sociological research organization. Over fifteen years with the Center he was involved in more than a hundred quantitative and qualitative research projects on different aspects of Russian society. Volkov has authored works on sources of political regime\u2019s support, political attitudes of the Russian youth, protest activities and civil society, business leader and elite opinion in Russia. He was a columnist for Vedomosti, RBC, Nezavisimaya, the Moscow Times newspapers and Carnegie.ru. He now writes for Forbes Russia. In this talk, Lee considers the temporality and performance of repetition as a key onto-epistemic framework in visualizing the space of transnational militarism - namely, the DMZ and U.S. military camptowns in South Korea.\r\n\r\nJung Joon Lee is Associate Professor in the Department of Theory and History of Art and Design at Rhode Island School of Design and a 2022-23 Society for the Humanities Fellow at Cornell University. A specialist in histories and theories of photography, Lee\u2019s research and teaching interests span the intersections of art and politics, transoceanic intimacies and decoloniality, and gender and sexuality. She is also the Chair of the U-M Research Ethics Committee, the ethicist on the Human Data and Biospecimen Release Committee, and a clinical ethicist. She teaches the Responsible Conduct of Research as well as Research Ethics and the Law and is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Bioethics.\r\n\r\nThe overarching goal of Prof. Spector\u2019s work is improving the governance of secondary research with health data and specimens to increase the accessibility of data and generalizability of advances across diverse communities. She is the PI of a National Human Genome Research Institute K01 studying how and why geneticists select datasets for their research and a National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences R01 on hospitals sharing patient data with commercial entities. Her recent articles have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Science, JAMA, and Nature Medicine, and her research or expertise has appeared in the NY Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, TIME, and CNN.\r\n\r\nProfessor Spector was an Associate Director for President Obama\u2019s Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, and is a former Board Member of the American Society for Bioethics & Humanities and practicing FDA law attorney. Utilizing constrained writing, interactive components, as well as a combination of various media, Aterazma emphasizes the limits war places on language and the ability to think one\u2019s way out of violence, yet offers a path towards dialogue.\r\n\r\n4 years on from Aterazma, Armenia and Azerbaijan have seen another war, this one far more deadly and causing significant changes to the geopolitical realities on the ground, to say nothing of the ongoing suffering borne by servicemen and their families.\r\n\r\nIn this presentation\u2014part-talk and part-reading\u2014Kar\u00e9n will perform his 2016 work, contextualizing and re-evaluating it in the aftermath of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. He will draw on his own experience of the war, written as part of his latest poetry collection \u00ab\u053c\u0565\u0566\u057e\u056b \u056e\u0561\u0575\u0580\u056b\u0576\u00bb [Lezvi Tsayrin (On the Tip of the Tongue)], as well as anthropological studies of post-war trauma. Karslyan will also engage the audience in an interactive creative writing experiment based on some of the techniques implemented in the book, allowing the audience to create alternative versions of an existing chapter.\r\n\r\nAbout Kar\u00e9n: Kar\u00e9n Karslyan is a poet, novelist, visual artist, and translator. Born and raised in Armenia, he moved to the United States in 2005. He earned a PhD in English from Yerevan State Linguistic University, where his dissertation centered around a comparative intertextual reading of Lawrence Sterne\u2019s Tristram Shandy and James Joyce\u2019s Finnegans Wake. Karslyan writes and translates between Armenian, English, and Russian. His literary work often pushes boundaries, and his most recent Armenian-language publications include the play \"The Regime is in Panic\" (Actual Art, 2019) and Aterazma: Typographic Film (Inknagir, 2016), a commentary on war, interethnic hatred, and the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
