SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DEI @ Work Book Discussion | Adam Grant’s Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success
DESCRIPTION:What makes a successful person? According to Wharton organizational psychologist Adam Grant\, it may not be what you think. This groundbreaking book explores the concept that success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. At work\, most people operate as either takers\, matchers\, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly\, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return. And although some givers get exploited and burn out\, the rest achieve extraordinary results across a wide range of industries. Join Medical School Senior Administrative Director Bekah Ashley as she discusses this bestselling classic on leadership. Open to everyone in the U-M community\, but please register to attend.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Firearm Safety: A Comprehensive Approach
DESCRIPTION:Firearms recently surpassed motor vehicles as the leading cause of death for kids and teens in the U.S.\, and were involved in a record 45\,000 deaths nationwide in 2020. The current toll hearkens back to the days of rising automobile crash deaths\, which spurred a national effort to use injury prevention science to make changes that cut automobile deaths in half — not by taking cars off the road\, but rather by making our roads and their drivers safer. \n\nToday\, experts from the U-M Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention are using the same strategy to understand and address firearm injuries and deaths. Through research\, and partnerships with community leaders\, they seek to make communities safer. Many are also front-line health care providers who have treated people with firearm injuries or risk factors for firearm violence or self-harm.\n\nIn this Well Aware\, several of U-M’s top experts will discuss how we can best address this national crisis. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Lin Tian\, Ph.D.\, University of California\, Davis
DESCRIPTION:To study the neural circuitry\, the action of cells under the context of others\, one would precisely measure and perturb specific neuronal populations and molecules in behaving animals who are specifically engaged in performing the computation or function of interest. The data set of millions of neurons firing together underlying a behavior are required to develop and refine theories (hypotheses) explaining animal behavior in terms of brain physiology. The focus of my lab is to develop novel genetically encoded indicators based on fluorescence proteins\, especially focusing on direct and specific measurement of myriad input signals with needed spatial and temporal resolutions. In this talk\, I will discuss our recent progress in developing and applying a new suite of genetically encoded indicators of neural activity. I will discuss the design\, characterization\, and applications of these genetically encoded indicators for both in vivo imaging and drug discovery. In combination with calcium imaging and optogenetics\, the sensors are well poised to permit direct functional analysis of how the spatiotemporal coding of neural input signaling mediates the plasticity and function of target circuits.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nLin Tian\, Ph.D.\nProfessor and Vice Chair of Research\nDepartment of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine\nUniversity of California\, Davis\, School of Medicine\n\nThe Tian Laboratory for Optical Neurophysiology engineers biosensors and optical probes for monitoring and controlling brain activity in living\, behaving research subjects. When combined with behavioral and circuit manipulations\, these tools can reveal the brain mechanisms underlying the control of various behaviors in health and disease and serve as drug discovery platforms for the identification of novel therapeutic targets. To learn more about Dr. Tian\, please visit lintianlab.org\n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a Hybrid Seminar: In person at Palmer Commons Forum Hall and on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Who Benefits from Corporate Tax Cuts?
DESCRIPTION:The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 made large changes to the taxation of corporate and pass-through businesses in the U.S. Understanding the effects of those changes\, however\, means finding control firms whose taxation was not altered by the TCJA. Credit unions offer a novel control group for studying the effects of the TCJA on small and medium size banks because they compete with these banks for deposits and in making loans\, and because they were not taxed both before and after. So who benefited? Prof. Fox will explain what he and his colleagues found when investigating what percentage of the tax cut went to depositors\, whether employees or borrowers received a benefit\, and other questions. Show up to find out the results!

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:2021 Profile of Arts Incubators – A Growing Phenomena in the Universe of Cultural Organizations
DESCRIPTION:What is an “Arts Incubator” and what does one do? Join us on December 8 at 1pm ET for an exciting presentation featuring Dr. Stan Renard\, the director of The Arts Incubation Research (AIR) Lab\, at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The AIR Lab is funded\, in part\, by a NEA Research Labaward from the National Endowment for the Arts. Dr. Renard will present findings from a national survey of programs designed to provide business and entrepreneurial supportfor artists. The survey was fielded by AIR Lab and Americans for the Arts in fall 2021 and contains information about the participating art incubators’ programs\, financials\, and operating procedures. It also focused on the program delivery implications in light of the COVID-19 pandemic\, as well as broader issues of access and equity. The AIR Lab is an example of a project funded through the NEA Research Awards programs resulting in data usable by secondary analysts.\n\nThis webinar is free and open to the public. The webinar will be recorded and the recording will be sent to all registrants and added to the ICPSR YouTube Channel.\n\n\nPresenter:\n\nDr. Stan Renard is Associate Dean and Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Arts Management and Entrepreneurship programs in the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Ronald F. Inglehart Honorary Lecture 2022
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 the WVSA introduced The Ronald F. Inglehart Honorary Lecture to commemorate the memory and scientific legacy of the Founder of the World Values Survey Prof. Ronald F. Inglehart. The 2022 lecture will be read by Prof. Russell J. Dalton.\n\nLecture Summary: \n\nSocial Modernization and Political Tolerance in America: The Untold Story\n\nAccording to pundits and some scholars\, the American public is deeply split into rival camps that intensely dislike each other and their political views. Many liberals don’t understand conservatives and project their worst images on them\; many conservatives act similarly. Social media can sometimes seem like a war zone. Political intolerance and extremism seem rife among Americans.\n\nHowever\, much of this reporting misses the larger reality that most Americans do not live at the political extremes. Analyzing support for political tolerance over time\, public opinion trends point to what some will view as a surprising finding. In line with Inglehart’s social modernization theory\, political tolerance has steadily increased over the past forty years\, including during the early years of the Trump administration. This untold story suggests a reassessment of the American public and the potential for democratic renewal.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar: Towards Predictive Modeling for Computational Hypersonics
DESCRIPTION:Ragini Acharya\nAssociate Professor\nUniversity of Tennessee Space Institute\n\nAbout the seminar:\nAt present\, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is utilized as a significant tool for the design\, evaluation\, planning\, and assessment for most hypersonic fight applications as well as wind tunnel tests. Among CFD techniques\, Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) has been utilized as a practical method for this purpose while scale resolving methods are utilized for understanding/evaluation of specific phenomena not captured by RANS. There are several sources of uncertainty and errors in this CFD-based work-flow process including model-form uncertainties (grid\, closure models for several terms in the governing equations)\, measurement uncertainties (boundary/input conditions that come from observations/measurements as well as their statistical approximation to input to the CFD)\, and interpretation of the calculated results. The seminar will highlight such issues and potential pathways for development of a common-vision methodology to develop truly predictive models for computational simulations of high-speed flows.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nRagini Acharya joined the University of Tennessee Space Institute\, (UTSI) as an Associate Professor in the Mechanical\, Aerospace\, and Biomedical Engineering\, (MABE) Department. \n\nAcharya received her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 2008. \n\nBefore coming to UTSI\, Ragini Acharya spent over a decade in aerospace and defence industry with her last appointment as a Hypersonic Propulsion Lead at Raytheon Missile Systems. Acharya has been the principal investigator of multiple programs on Hypersonic and propulsion technologies\, reacting flow modeling and computations\, and uncertainty quantification method development. Her research has been funded by government agencies and industry including JHTO\, ONR\, UCAH\, DARPA DSO\, DARPA TTO\, AFRL\, NASA Langley\, AMRDEC\, MDA\, and Raytheon Missile Systems. Acharya has co-authored two graduate-level textbooks on\, “Turbulent and Multiphase Combustion” (John Wiley & Sons) in addition to over 50 technical articles in peer-reviewed publications and technical conferences. Acharya is an AIAA Associate Fellow\, a Pre-college Outreach Director for AIAA Greater Huntsville Section\, and a member of both the High-Speed Air Breathing Propulsion and Inlets\, Nozzles\, and Propulsion System Integration Technical Committees at AIAA.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Toward an open science ecosystem for neuroimaging
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIt is now widely accepted that openness and transparency are keys to improving the reproducibility of scientific research\, but many challenges remain to adoption of these practices. I will discuss the growth of an ecosystem for open science within the field of neuroimaging\, focusing on platforms for open data sharing and open source tools for reproducible data analysis. I will also discuss the role of the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS)\, a community standard for data organization\, in enabling this open science ecosystem\, and will outline the scientific impacts of these resources.\nBio:\nRussell A. Poldrack is the Albert Ray Lang Professor in the Department of Psychology\, and Director of the Stanford Center for Open and Reproducible Science.  His research uses neuroimaging to understand the brain systems underlying decision making and executive function.  His lab is also engaged in the development of neuroinformatics tools to help improve the reproducibility and transparency of neuroscience\, including the Openneuro.org and Neurovault.org data sharing projects and the Cognitive Atlas ontology.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Michigan Archives@the DO: American North Russia Expeditionary Force in Archangel
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Archives Nights at the Detroit Observatory feature compelling collections and selections from the holdings of the Bentley Historical Library\, covering U-M history\, state history\, and more. Join us as archivists pull fascinating items out of the collections and share the stories behind them.\n\nThe American military intervention at Archangel\, Russia\, at the end of World War I\, nicknamed the \"Polar Bear Expedition\,\" is a strange episode in American history. Ostensibly sent to Russia to prevent a German advance and to help reopen the Eastern Front\, American soldiers found themselves fighting Bolshevik revolutionaries for months after the Armistice ended fighting in France. Because many of the American troops involved in the intervention were from Michigan\, the Bentley Historical Library has extensive records on the expedition. Join us for Archivist Olga Virakhovskaya's talk about this historic episode\, replete with documents and artifacts from the exhibition.\n\nOlga Virakhovskaya is the Lead Archivist for Collections Management at the Bentley Historical Library. She oversees the process of preparation of collections for use by Bentley's researchers\, as well as creating collection guides and catalog records. A native of St. Petersburg\, Russia\, Olga holds a BA in Sociology from Simmons University in Boston\; M.A. in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Michigan\, and a Master in Library and Information Science from Southern Connecticut State University. She joined the Bentley in 2007. Archives related to the American North Russia Expeditionary Force\, or the Polar Bears archives\, are among Olga's favorite Bentley collections. Her other favorite collections include archives related to the University of Michigan Symphony Band's 1961 tour of the Soviet Union\; as well as collections related to civil rights and accessibility rights activism in Michigan. Olga's current professional interests include the issues of ethics and privacy in archives.

The songs and artists change from year to year\, but the spirit of the event is community\, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. \"Ebird\"is Erin Zindle\, lead singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin's budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together\, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles\, horns\, bagpipes\, guitars\, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained\, surprised\, cheered\, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs\, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to four presentations this year for its 15th anniversary\, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

SUMMARY:Performance:MFA Thesis Concert: Once there was not
DESCRIPTION:Once there was not is an evening-length multimedia dance theater performance by Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Leah O'Donnell\, whose thesis work is in two parts: the premiere of O'Donnell's screen dance\, Blue Burrow\, immediately followed by a live performance featuring six dancers and one singer. Runtime is approximately one hour.\n\nBlue Burrow is a short film fully immersed in the sun\, sand\, and water of Lake Huron. The shore is the meeting place for characters of different species\, while the world underwater comes to represent the subconscious. Perspectives shift from fish to human to sun\, and metaphors about our relationship to the natural world emerge.\nThe live performance portion of Once There Was Not explores impermanence\, contradiction\, and ambiguity through a surreal lens. At once dark and nostalgic\, six dancers dodge Death\, the oldest friend\, and find purgatory in a pub\, forgetting and remembering bits of life along the way. \n\nFriday night’s performance will also be livestreamed: \nsmtd.umich.edu/performances-events/live-stream-dance/\n\nPhoto credit: Robert Platt
