SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Machine Learning-Based Feature Quantification of Clinical High-Frequency Oscillations
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe suspense of not knowing when and how a seizure may occur is one of the most exhaustive aspects of an epileptic patient’s life. To address this problem\, researchers have been investigating novel biomarkers to gain information about seizure generation and epileptic networks for decades. With modern advancements in recording equipment and computational power\, biomarkers that identified from the electrical activity recorded by intracranial electrodes\, such as High-Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have gained traction and are utilized to predict seizure onset zone (SOZ) locations within the brain. However\, HFOs are low amplitude waveforms with a time period less than 1 millisecond whose acquisition process can result in noise artifacts. The EEG signals undergo filtering to isolate the HFO events within the 100 – 500 Hz range\; a process that can produce false positives due to the occurrence of Gibb’s Phenomenon. Additionally\, these filters can also mask the occurrence of artifacts such as head movement and electrical noise. Thus\, to address this problem\, a machine learning classifier was developed to distinguish events that are clearly artifact from the true HFOs. In this study\, logistic regression models were designed to distinguish HFOs naturally occurring in the brain from false positive resulting artifacts amounting to a Positive Predictive Value (PPV) of 84.59%. The correlations of these correctly identified HFOs with inter-patient variability and feature prioritization were also analyzed in a repeated measures study and the significance of each feature was computed. Future directions of this study would follow the estimation of more features from the HFO data to refine the algorithm and improve the precision of identifying true-positive HFO detections. This will heighten the quality of the HFOs being detected in real-time continuous EEG recordings on translation into a clinical environment in the future.\n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96623464149 Meeting ID: 966 2346 4149\n\nCommittee Chair(s):\nDr. William Stacey

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Rob Trangucci\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Despite the importance of vaccine efficacy against post-infection outcomes like transmission or severe illness\, these estimands are unidentifiable\, even under strong assumptions that are rarely satisfied in real-world trials. We develop a novel method to nonparametrically point identify these principal effects while eliminating the assumptions of monotonicity and perfect infection and post-infection measurements. Furthermore\, we show that these results immediately extend to multiple treatments. The result is applicable outside of vaccine efficacy due to the generality of the results. We show that our method can be applied to a variety of clinical trial settings where vaccine efficacy against infection and a post-infection outcome can be jointly inferred. This can yield new insights from existing vaccine efficacy trial data and will aid researchers in designing new multi-arm clinical trials.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Human-Centered Design to Improve Inclusiveness of CAVs for Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI)\, in a project sponsored by the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT)\, is helping engineering students explore issues of older adult accessibility\, acceptability\, and other aspects of inclusion related to CAVs through classroom discussions and implementation of a class project.\n\nIn this poster session\, project researchers and Michigan Engineering students will present findings from the project on how human-centered design principles can be used to address the needs and preferences of older adults in the design of CAVs. Hors d'oeuvres from The Produce Station will be served. Space is limited so secure your spot today.\n\nCAVs hold promise for reducing traffic crashes and maintaining mobility among older adults. However\, challenges remain in ensuring that CAVs are accessible\, acceptable\, and otherwise inclusive for older adults. Using a framework of experiential learning (exploring\, engaging\, reflecting\, and communicating)\, students in a human-centered design course taught by Dr. Feng Zhou engaged in a classroom project to identify potential solutions for making CAVs more responsive to older adult needs and preferences. Students and researchers from the larger project will share their findings with CCAT members\, UMTRI and other University faculty\, staff\, students\, and industry representatives.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Unmasked: A History of the Individualization of Risk
DESCRIPTION:The notion that risk is appropriately understood – and managed – in terms of each individual’s own personal calculus is so familiar an idea in contemporary society that it appears to almost not require any explanation. However\, closer inspection of the problem reveals an important historical irony\, as for much of the twentieth century risk was understood to be an intrinsically collective affair. In this paper\, I explore how risk was transformed from being understood as a property of groups to being understood as a property of individuals by examining the history of public and private insurance in the United States. Rather than locate transformations in how risk\nis managed in our society in the “great risk shift” occurring with the emergence of neoliberalism (Hacker 2006)\, I suggest that the individualization of risk in recent decades is only the latest instantiation of a recurrent conflict between security and freedom that has marked the evolution of capitalism. Seen from this longer historical perspective\, the “personal responsibility revolution” appears not as the handiwork of neoliberal policymakers\, but rather as the unintended result of movements that sought to gain access to markets for risk for those excluded from them.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Graduate Student Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person or virtually on Zoom. https://umich.zoom.us/j/91533804345\n\nTzu-Yun Tung\nTITLE \nExpectations modulate retrieval interference during ellipsis resolution\n\nABSTRACT\nMemory operations during language comprehension are subject to interference: retrieval is harder when items are linguistically similar to each other. We test how such interference effects might be modulated by linguistic expectations. Theories differ in how these factors might interact\; we consider three possibilities: (i) predictability determines the need for retrieval\, (ii) predictability affects cue-preference during retrieval\, or (iii) noisy memory representations affect next-word predictions. We first demonstrate that expectations for a target word modulate retrieval interference in Mandarin noun-phrase ellipsis in an electroencephalography (EEG) experiment. This result obtains in globally ungrammatical sentences – termed “facilitatory interference.” Such a pattern is inconsistent with theories that focus only on the need for retrieval. To tease apart cue-preferences from noisy-memory representations\, we operationalize the latter using a Transformer neural network language model. Confronting that model with our stimuli does reveal an interference effect\, consistent with prior work\, but does not show an interaction between interference and predictability which contrasts with the EEG results. Together\, these data are most consistent with the hypothesis that the predictability of target items affects cue-preferences during retrieval.\n\n\nDominique A. Canning\nTITLE\nAn Intersectional Approach to Black Queer Language & Identity Performance\n\nABSTRACT\nThis talk furthers our understanding of how Black queer people use language to perform and create their identities. The intersection of Blackness and queerness is one that requires us to examine the ways race\, gender\, and sexual orientation influence a person’s lived experience. Following an intersectional approach\, I argue that a Black queer person does not experience the world as either a Black person or a queer person\, but uniquely as a Black queer person. To understand the role of language in Black queer life and experience\, it is necessary to challenge strict boundaries between linguistic categories and social identities\, while also considering the ways linguistic performance may be used as a tool of power and resistance.

SUMMARY:Performance:15th Annual Ebird & Friends Holiday Show
DESCRIPTION:It happens in the middle of Michigan in the heart of December. Since 2007\, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year\, but the spirit of the event is community\, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. \"Ebird\"is Erin Zindle\, lead singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin's budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together\, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles\, horns\, bagpipes\, guitars\, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained\, surprised\, cheered\, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs\, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to four presentations this year for its 15th anniversary\, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

SUMMARY:Performance:MFA Thesis Concert: Once there was not
DESCRIPTION:Once there was not is an evening-length multimedia dance theater performance by Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Leah O'Donnell\, whose thesis work is in two parts: the premiere of O'Donnell's screen dance\, Blue Burrow\, immediately followed by a live performance featuring six dancers and one singer. Runtime is approximately one hour.\n\nBlue Burrow is a short film fully immersed in the sun\, sand\, and water of Lake Huron. The shore is the meeting place for characters of different species\, while the world underwater comes to represent the subconscious. Perspectives shift from fish to human to sun\, and metaphors about our relationship to the natural world emerge.\nThe live performance portion of Once There Was Not explores impermanence\, contradiction\, and ambiguity through a surreal lens. At once dark and nostalgic\, six dancers dodge Death\, the oldest friend\, and find purgatory in a pub\, forgetting and remembering bits of life along the way. \n\nFriday night’s performance will also be livestreamed: \nsmtd.umich.edu/performances-events/live-stream-dance/\n\nPhoto credit: Robert Platt
