DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning between buyers and sellers along the global value chain
DESCRIPTION:This paper analyses learning between buyers and sellers as a new channel through which international trade affects product introduction across different production stages within firms. Using detailed plant level data from the Indian manufacturing census\, I find that (i) 45% of multi-product plants produce at least one product pair that is connected in the Input-Output matrix\, (ii) 40% of new products added by plants every year are either upstream or downstream to products previously produced by them\, and (iii) exogenous increases in upstream export market access cause firms to add new products that are downstream to their previous production sets. I attribute this effect to plants learning about new products from their downstream buyers. To analyze the effects of trade policy on firm scope I build a dynamic quantitative general equilibrium model of Global Value Chains with knowledge spillovers arising from buyer-seller linkages along the value chain. Potentially multi-product and multi-stage producers in the model invest in R&D to increase their product sets and benefit from knowledge spillovers from domestic and foreign markets. Trade policy counterfactuals show that cross-stage product innovation decreases as the economy liberalizes due to convergence in technology levels across countries in general equilibrium.

Music Director for this production will be University of Michigan graduate Jordan McKay\, who served as Music Director for UMGASS’s well-received production of HMS Pinafore in December 2021\, and Assistant Music Director for the 2019 Ann Arbor in Concert production of Beauty and the Beast. The Co-Choreographers will be Beth Ballbach\, who has choreographed more than a dozen UMGASS productions\, and Phillip Rhodes\, who has twice portrayed the Pirate King for UMGASS\, in addition to choreographing for many other shows.

DESCRIPTION:It happens in the middle of Michigan in the heart of December. Since 2007\, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year\, but the spirit of the event is community\, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. \"Ebird\"is Erin Zindle\, lead singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin's budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together\, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles\, horns\, bagpipes\, guitars\, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained\, surprised\, cheered\, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs\, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to four presentations this year for its 15th anniversary\, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

This presentation includes how to find the cardinal directions on your own by finding the North Star\, current and upcoming constellations\, visible planets\, a few deep sky objects depending on the season\, and other interesting astronomical visualizations. If you want to be able to look up from your own backyard and know what to look for\, this is the show for you.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. Tickets $8. Tickets are available on the day of the show at the Museum Store.\n\nThe planetarium is operating at half capacity to maximize distancing between viewers.

Indecent is a story of Jewishness\, queerness\, love\, artistic freedom\, homophobia\, the dying Yiddish language and culture\, the stories we've lost\, and the need to create theatre and beauty even in the worst of times.

DESCRIPTION:Once there was not is an evening-length multimedia dance theater performance by Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Leah O'Donnell\, whose thesis work is in two parts: the premiere of O'Donnell's screen dance\, Blue Burrow\, immediately followed by a live performance featuring six dancers and one singer. Runtime is approximately one hour.\n\nBlue Burrow is a short film fully immersed in the sun\, sand\, and water of Lake Huron. The shore is the meeting place for characters of different species\, while the world  underwater comes to represent the subconscious. Perspectives shift from fish to human to sun\, and metaphors about our relationship to the natural world emerge.\nThe live performance portion of Once There Was Not explores impermanence\, contradiction\, and ambiguity through a surreal lens. DESCRIPTION:This Fall\, in honor of our 75th anniversary\, UMGASS will produce fan favorite\, The Pirates of Penzance.\n\nThis production will be directed by David Andrews\, who has directed nine productions for UMGASS\, including a previous ‘Pirates’ in 2013\, and who also played the role of Major-General Stanley in 2009. Music Director for this production will be University of Michigan graduate Jordan McKay\, who served as Music Director for UMGASS’s well-received production of HMS Pinafore in December 2021\, and Assistant Music Director for the 2019 Ann Arbor in Concert production of Beauty and the Beast. The Co-Choreographers will be Beth Ballbach\, who has choreographed more than a dozen UMGASS productions\, and Phillip Rhodes\, who has twice portrayed the Pirate King for UMGASS\, in addition to choreographing for many other shows.
