SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Deterministic and Chance-Constrained Real-Time Motion Planning Using Reachability Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Ram Vasudevan\nZoom passcode: DEFENSE\n\nAbstract:\nDue to their limited sensing horizon\, robots construct trajectories in a receding-horizon fashion\, where a trajectory defined over a finite time horizon is computed while the robot tracks a previously planned trajectory. This trajectory is constructed by applying an optimization or sampling based method wherein collision checking is performed against obstacles at discrete time instances. Unfortunately this presents an undesirable tradeoff between real-time performance and safety. Reachability-based Trajectory Design (RTD) circumvents this tradeoff by leveraging offline pre-computation of parameterized over-approximations of the robot behavior using Forward Reachable Sets (FRS) thereby achieving safety and real-time operation. To accomplish this objective\, RTD represents the full order dynamics of the robot using a reduced-order model\, which enables it to apply polynomial-based reachability analysis offline to the reduced-order model while conservatively bounding the difference between the two models. The result is a parameterized over-approximation of the full order robot behavior which can then be used for real-time trajectory design without sacrificing safety. However\, RTD suffers from a pair of shortcomings: first\, representing the full order dynamics using a reduced order model can introduce undue conservatism that makes it challenging to construct safe\, dynamic motion\; and second\, RTD deals with probabilistic models of the surrounding environment by requiring that any possible behavior (even one with exceedingly small probability) is safe thereby introducing more conservatism. This thesis focuses on illustrating RTD on a walking robot model and addressing the two issues of RTD. \n\nThe first contribution of the thesis generalizes the RTD framework to bipedal robots for flat ground walking using the idea of templates and anchors\, where `templates' are simplified descriptions of the behavior of the full-order models as `anchors'. Reachability analysis is performed on the template model under the assumption that the difference between the template and anchor can be bounded. Offline-computed polynomial reachable sets are then incorporated into a Model Predictive Control framework to select controllers that result in safe walking on the biped in an online fashion. The second contribution of the thesis improves the RTD framework for autonomous vehicles by designing a novel robust\, partial feedback linearization controller and performing zonotope-based reachability analysis on the closed-loop system. Because only the full-order model is involved in the computation of the reachable set\, the outer approximation of the FRS using zonotopes is much tighter than existing polynomial-based\, traditional RTD approaches. The third contribution of this thesis extends the RTD framework to deal with uncertainty. Consider the challenge of performing motion planning where one is given a Probability Density Function (PDF) description of an obstacle's state. The problem of bounding the risk of collision while performing motion planning can be cast as a chance-constrained program. To address this challenge\, the thesis develops a numerical scheme that conservatively approximates the integral of a PDF over FRS and its gradient with respect to a control parameterization. Using this information\, one can formulate a chance-constrained RTD approach to real-time risk-averse motion planning.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:“Cosmic Rays at Heliosphere Extremes: Key Findings from Voyager and Parker Solar Probe”\n\nAbstract:\nIn 2012\, during the centennial year of the discovery of cosmic rays\, Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause and began making the very first in-situ observations of the surrounding interstellar medium. Joined by Voyager 2 in 2018\, these twin spacecraft continue to provide critical measurements of cosmic rays in a surprising\, previously-unexplored plasma regime. Meanwhile\, in 2018\, Parker Solar Probe made history by exploring another new regime\, venturing closer to the Sun than any spacecraft before it. This talk will highlight the new insights\, discoveries\, and open questions that have arisen from in-situ measurements of low-energy anomalous and galactic cosmic rays (few to hundreds of MeV) at these two extremes and how they relate to the current understanding of our own global astrosphere.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Group\, Lie and Number Theory Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Title: Tate Classes and Endoscopy for GSp4\n\nAbstract: Weissauer proved using the theory of endoscopy that the Galois representations associated to classical modular forms of weight two appear in the middle cohomology of both a modular curve and a Siegel modular threefold. Correspondingly\, there are large families of Tate classes on the product of these two Shimura varieties\, and it is natural to ask whether one can construct algebraic cycles giving rise to these Tate classes. It turns out that a natural algebraic cycle generates some\, but not all\, of the Tate classes: to be precise\, it generates exactly the Tate classes which are associated to generic members of the endoscopic L-packets on GSp4. In the non-generic case\, one can at least show that all the Tate classes arise from Hodge cycles. I'll explain these results and sketch their proofs\, which rely on the theta correspondence.

SUMMARY:Other:The Lawrence Bayreuth Graduate Tuben Quintet
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet is a Wagner tuba quintet that\, fluid by design and inclination\, is comprised of at least six members who identify as\, know\, or would like to know\, someone who is LGBTQ+.\nBy queering Wagner\, they celebrate and give voice to unconventional instruments and non-traditional ensembles. Informed by their values of inclusivity\, diversity\, and visibility they aim to build and expand the cannon for their flexible ensemble and advance a non-hierarchical agenda that includes affecting positive social change and creating broader representation for the historically underrepresented.\n\nMade possible by the Sally Fleming Masterclass Fund and sponsored by EXCEL.
