SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:EXCEL Talk: The Lawrence Bayreuth Graduate Tuben Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a professional roundtable discussion with the Lawrence Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet. Refreshments will be served.\n\nThe Lawrence Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet is a tuben horn quintet that\, fluid by design and inclination\, is comprised of at least six members who identify as\, know\, or would like to know\, someone who is LGBTQ+. The tuben horn (often referred to as the “Wagner tuba”) is an orchestral misfit\, approximately the size and shape of a euphonium but played with a French horn mouthpiece. In recent years\, the instrument has been featured inscores for video games and adventure films but otherwise\, tuben horns\, usually found in sets of four\, take up space in instrument lockers in symphony halls until dusted off for the yearly Wagnerian blow-out.\n\nThat is\, until 2019\, when a group of new-music French horn superstars decided to take up the cause of the neglected instrument in the form of the Lawrence Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet. Current members include founder Ann Ellsworth\, renowned soloist and recording artist\, John Gattis\, known for his work with Wavefield Ensemble\, Kyra Sims\, New York’s premiere comedian horn player\, Leander Star\, horn player with the new music wind quintet The City of Tomorrow\, and Lydia VanDreel\, horn professor at the University of Oregon and member of Quadre Horn Quartet.\n\n\nhttps://lgbtubenquintet.squarespace.com/about

SUMMARY:Other:The Lawrence Bayreuth Graduate Tuben Quintet: Equity in the Performing Arts Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet is a Wagner tuba quintet that\, fluid by design and inclination\, is comprised of at least six members who identify as\, know\, or would like to know\, someone who is LGBTQ+.\nBy queering Wagner\, they celebrate and give voice to unconventional instruments and non-traditional ensembles. Informed by their values of inclusivity\, diversity\, and visibility they aim to build and expand the cannon for their flexible ensemble and advance a non-hierarchical agenda that includes affecting positive social change and creating broader representation for the historically underrepresented.\n\nMade possible by the Sally Fleming Masterclass Fund and sponsored by EXCEL.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Lizhen Lin\, Robert and Sara Lumpkings Associate Professor\, Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics\, The University of Notre Dame
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, I will discuss adaptive statistical inference based on variational Bayes. Although a number of studies have been conducted to analyze theoretical properties such as posterior contraction properties of variational posteriors\, there is still a lack of general and computationally tractable variational Bayes methods that can achieve adaptive inference. To fill this gap\, we propose a novel adaptive variational Bayes framework\, which can operate on a collection of models. The proposed framework first computes a variational posterior over each individual model separately and then combines them with certain weights to produce a variational posterior over the entire model space. It turns out that this combined variational posterior is the closest member to the posterior over the entire model in a predefined family of approximating distributions. We show that the proposed variational posterior achieves optimal contraction rates adaptively under very general conditions and attains model selection consistency when the true model structure exists. We apply the general results obtained for the adaptive variational Bayes to a large class of statistical models including deep learning models and derive some new and adaptive inference results.
