They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n \r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east.\r\n \r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n \r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\r\n\r\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017, working within a variety of mediums, from photography and collage to animation and virtual\/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she\u2019s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\r\n\r\nPrior to her career in the arts, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art, technology, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\r\n\r\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, event spaces, fairs, and festivals. Since these injuries, which are never repaired, can have life-long sequelae including prolapse and incontinence, it seems reasonable to try to prevent them. From a biomechanical perspective, women with unusually stretch-resistant lower birth canals can expect longer labors and a higher risk for muscle and tissue injury. The goals of this dissertation were to (a) quantify the viscoelastic properties of the lower birth canal during the first stage of labor, with special attention to the effects of age and body mass index; (b) identify those at risk for a long second stage of labor, as well as (c) an elevated risk for levator ani injuries. Following an introductory chapter (Chapter 1), we describe the biomechanics of a new device that dilates the lower birth canal (PREP, Materna Medical, LLC., CA) during the first stage of labor, and its use in the ongoing multicenter EASE clinical trial (Chapter 2).\r\n\r\nNext, we quantify the normal ranges of lower birth canal resistance to dilation (tension T) in 56 nulliparas during the first stage of labor. We found remarkable variation in birth canal wall tension across all subjects. Specifically, the tension when reaching 55 mm dilation varied 5.5-fold and was 22% greater in older women and correlated strongly with both relaxation during the 5-minute hold and with the maximum tension (r= 0.80, r = 0.59 with p<0.001), thus a reasonable predictor of resistance to lower canal dilation (Chapter 3). The stiffness of the initial 20 s ramp varied 6.8-fold and was 31% higher in older women.\r\n\r\nWe then demonstrated that the effect of the initial 20 s ramp-and-5 minute hold of PREP insertion on the viscoelastic properties of the lower birth canal can reliably be characterized using a fractional viscoelastic Zener model (FZM). In 61 nullipara, the relative error for the 20 s ramp-and-5 minute hold using the FZM was 8.1 \u00b1 3.6% and provided a relative prediction error in 60 minutes of dilation of 10.0 \u00b1 5.4%. The FZM constant k\u03b2, an analog for the shorter timer constant, was 33% higher in older women (Chapter 4). We then used the fractional Zener viscoelastic constants obtained in Chapter 4 to predict the duration of the second stage of labor and risk for levator ani injury. As labor outcomes are presently unavailable for the PREP subjects due to the ongoing nature of the EASE trial, the model was tested on data from an earlier constant force PILOT dilator study involving 22 healthy women with available labor outcomes. Our prediction model identified both instances of LA injury and predicted 22% of the variation in the second stage of labor duration (Chapter 5). We conclude that the viscoelastic properties of the lower birth canal in the first stage of labor are responsible for nearly a quarter of the variation in second stage duration. The exhibition will take place from September 15, 2022 - January 14, 2023.Why posters & videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking, and designed to draw attention from passersby, posters can be conversation starters, invite people to pause, reflect, spread the word, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films, recorded performances, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries, museums, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social, political, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races, genders, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality, structural racism, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality, belonging, respect? All forms of plasticity are tightly regulated to ensure proper tissue function, and when aberrantly activated, can contribute to pathological phenotypes, including impaired tissue repair and tumorigenesis. Understanding how cellular identity is dysregulated during aging, injury, and disease may yield approaches that correct aberrant cell fate transitions with therapeutic applications. This dissertation seeks to characterize the factors that guard cell fate by integrating innovative experimental techniques, including novel cell lines, animal models, and micro-engineered devices, with high-throughput sequencing assays and bioinformatics tools that map molecular information to cellular responses.\u00a0\r\n\r\nThe first three studies provide insights into the mechanisms that preserve the regenerative capacity of muscle stem cells (MuSCs), the resident stem cell population in skeletal muscle. MuSCs lie in a state of mitotic quiescence during homeostasis and activate upon injury to repair damaged tissue while also renewing the quiescent stem cell pool. Over time, MuSCs accumulate intracellular damage that alters metabolic signaling pathways and transcriptional programs supportive of quiescence, blunting the efficient regeneration of skeletal muscle. To further understand how MuSCs acquire dysfunctional molecular programs in old age, we explore the roles of three-dimensional genome organization, an underexplored histone modification (H4K20me1), and a conserved metabolic regulator (Sestrins) in mediating pathological gene expression both at rest and in response to injury. We find that natural aging in MuSCs is accompanied by subtle shifts in global genome architecture and metabolic signaling that are sufficient to induce aberrant regenerative trajectories.\u00a0\r\n\r\nThe fourth and fifth studies describe continuing efforts to develop new models for engineering cell fate. In one study, we identify barriers to cell fate transitions by reprogramming somatic cells such that a specialized cell fate is erased and a new identity is adopted. This process requires spatial remodeling of the epigenetic landscape that is constrained by interactions between peripheral heterochromatin and the protein scaffold that lines the interior of the nucleus. We show that manipulating components of the nuclear scaffold prior to reprogramming alters mechanical properties of the nucleus and peripheral heterochromatin organization, which converge to drive changes in reprogramming dynamics. Finally, we revisit a century-old hypothesis that tumor cells acquire enhanced metastatic potential through fusion with neighboring stromal cells that express pro-metastatic traits such as motility, chemotaxis, and tissue tropism. To investigate this concept, we demonstrate the efficient production of bi-species heterokaryons from human tumor cells and mouse stromal cells in the brain metastatic niche, which allows genetic and metabolic factors to be assigned to their parent cell by species identity. This approach will allow us to identify and inhibit trans-acting factors that promote malignant fate transitions.\u00a0\r\n\r\nIn summary, this thesis provides mechanistic insights into cell fate plasticity in varying health contexts and explores new models for deciphering cell fate regulation.\r\n\r\nCommittee Chair(s): Dr. Carlos A. Taking seriously their invitation to build on the volume\u2019s conclusions and identify productive areas of future research, this lecture will explore concepts of sovereignty and empire in Syriac and Armenian historiography as evidence for the ontology of the Roman state in late antiquity and early Byzantium.\r\n Although Tim Greenwood, Hartmut Leppin, and Philip Michael Forness have treated similar questions about rulership in Syriac and Armenian literature in their contributions in this volume, they have done so separately and without comparison. Wolfe argues that it is in fact through comparison that we discover that, while Syriac terminology for Roman sovereignty was both diachronically and synchronically extremely stable, Armenian terminology was not, reflecting, among other things, the evolution of Roman imperial titulature in Byzantium. This contrast, suggests divergent experiences of empire in Syriac- and Armenian-speaking communities during a period of transformation and change that reshaped the late antique Near East into the early medieval Middle East.\r\n\r\nDr. James (Jimmy) Wolfe is a historian of Roman institutions and the Roman imperial administration in the late antique and early medieval Middle East. His research examines the evolution of the late Roman state in this period of transformations by re-reading evidence from early Christian communities in the eastern Mediterranean using non-traditional frameworks. He studies dialectics of cultural exchange in northern Mesopotamia, experiences of and impact of empire in Armenian- and Syriac-speaking communities, and the replication of Roman imperial discourses in Greek, Syriac, and Armenian historiography. James received his PhD in Greek and Latin from the Department of Classics at The Ohio State University in December 2020. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\r\n\r\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\r\n\r\nAbout the Artist\r\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\r\n\r\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017, working within a variety of mediums, from photography and collage to animation and virtual\/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she\u2019s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\r\n\r\nPrior to her career in the arts, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art, technology, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\r\n\r\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, event spaces, fairs, and festivals.
