SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Producing People Who Have No One: Child Welfare and Well-Being in Japan
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://myumi.ch/M9Nme\n\nThis presentation explores how cultural norms surrounding kinship\, many deeply connected to national ideologies of Japanese identity\, play out when kinship realities diverge from normative expectations surrounding nurturance and care. Both in Japan—where the ethnographic data for this presentation originate—and also across the world\, social welfare systems too often “produce people who have no one\,” in the words of one of my interlocutors. What are the conditions for a welfare system that nurtures well-being that produces people who *have* people?\n \n Kate Goldfarb is a cultural and medical anthropologist. Her research focuses on the ways social relationships impact embodied experience\, intersections between public policy and well-being\, and the co-production of scientific knowledge and subjective experiences.\n \n Her first book project (*Fragile Kinships: Child Welfare and Well-Being in Japan*\, currently under review) explored how social inclusion and exclusion shape holistic well-being. She conducted longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork with people connected to the Japanese child welfare system\, examining the stakes of family disconnection in a country where the family is considered the basic social unit. This project investigated how kinship ideologies articulate with discourses of Japanese national and cultural identity\, how these discourses shape understandings of what is “normal\,” and how these concepts of normality are caught up in global circuits of knowledge surrounding human development\, child rights\, and concepts of “care” under the rubric of social welfare. This project’s analytical frameworks are shaped by kinship theory\, medical anthropology\, semiotics\, feminist studies of science\, and queer theory\, investigating how past and present social relationships are experienced in visceral\, embodied terms.\n \n Her most recent research\, based in the U.S.\, are collaborative projects that take the creation of and engagement with atmospheric data as a social field to study ethnographically. She is the Principal Investigator on a collaborative project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration / National Weather Service in applied meteorological research\, “Smoke Exposure and Underserved Wildland Fire Communities.” An emergent project\, Knowing Air\, works to understand how shifting environmental factors—including increased wildfire activity and the COVID-19 pandemic—impact the ways people engage with air quality data (quantitative air quality indices and qualitative\, sensory\, story-based information) including measures of “invisible” pollutants such as ozone. Finally\, she is privileged to collaborate with the Louisville Historical Museum on their Marshall Fire Story Project to support the collection and archiving of community experiences surrounding the devastating December 30\, 2021 fire in Boulder County.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PSC/GFP Brown Bag: Hannah Douglas
DESCRIPTION:A social stigma emerges from the interaction between specific characteristics deemed different or deviant based on the context specific social norms. This research seeks to understand the experiences of those living with a stigmatized or marginalized identity to improve individual wellbeing\, interpersonal relationships\, and enhance participation in organizational and academic settings. In this talk\, I will discuss how context impacts the experience of stigmatization across two different studies\; first by exploring how academic climate at different levels influences career attitudes for marginalized early career scholars. In this study\, we suggest that the academic climate within the research group\, department\, and professional field are important factors for marginalized scholars (e.g.\, scholars of color\, disabled scholars). Second\, I will provide an in-depth analysis of stigma identity disclosure through both verbal and nonverbal modalities. Disclosing a concealable stigmatized identity—such as a mental health disorder or sexual assault experience—is a complex process whereby the risk of discrimination is weighed against the burden of concealing. However\, little is known how individuals disclose across behavioural modalities\, such as language and nonverbal movement dynamics\, and situational contexts (e.g.\, professional settings). Taken together\, these studies demonstrate the dynamic nature of stigmatization and propose interventions at multiple levels to improve well-being intra-personally and at the broader systems level.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Lecture: Morphable Intelligent Space Structures
DESCRIPTION:Xin Ning\nAssistant Professor\nDepartment of Aerospace Engineering \nPennsylvania State University\n\nAbout the seminar:\nIn the future\, space structures may be highly intelligent active systems that can morph\, adapt\, sense\, communicate\, manage energy\, process data\, grow\, and regenerate like biomaterials and biosystems. If such structures are realized\, they may serve as the structural foundation to enable truly intelligent space systems (e.g.\, spacecraft\, space robots\, and space architectures) that can pass Turing test. This talk will include several of our group’s efforts to pursue this challenging goal. The talk will begin with our work on developing a multifunctional bistable ultrathin composite boom for a 3U CubeSat that is scheduled to be launched to space in early 2023\, followed by discussions on the mechanics of bistable booms. I will then present our research on soft electronic skins and microsystems for morphable space structures from a broader perspective beyond the bistable booms. I will conclude the talk with my views on future collaborative\, interdisciplinary\, and long-term research that needs to be done to realize highly intelligent morphable space structures.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Xin Ning has been an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Pennsylvania State University since August 2018. Dr. Ning was a postdoctoral research associate from 2015 to 2018 at UIUC\, where he worked on soft electronics. Dr. Ning received his Ph.D. in Aeronautics in 2015 from Caltech\, where he studied buckling-resistant thin shells. Dr. Ning’s research focuses on aerospace structures with interdisciplinary work across mechanics\, soft electronics\, bioelectronics\, etc. His group has been supported by AFOSR\, NASA\, ONR\, NSF\, and various other external and internal grants. Dr. Ning is a recipient of several awards such as William F. Ballhaus Prize for outstanding doctoral dissertation in aeronautics at Caltech\, ONR Young Investigator Award\, and ASME Haythornthwaite Foundation Research Initiation Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: All-female salamanders: the genomic\, evolutionary\, and ecological consequences of strange vertebrate reproduction
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract: \nAll-female salamanders in the genus *Ambystoma* are the oldest unisexual vertebrates\, composed of a single mitochondrial lineage and multiple nuclear genomes introgressed from other salamander species. The unique characteristics of this system provide interesting perspectives on the maintenance of sex and polyploidy. Our work combines genomics\, physiological\, and ecological approaches to understand how all-female salamanders have co-existed with related sexual species\, how their numerous nuclear genomes have moved between lineages\, and how the interactions between their mitochondrial and nuclear genomes influence their basic physiology.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Autonomous Medical Robots Guided by Real-Time 3D Imaging
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMedical robots can precisely manipulate tools beyond human capabilities and are thus helpful for surgeries involving delicate tissue interactions. When coupled with live 3D imaging\, such robots can independently guide surgical instruments in real time. In practice\, however\, patients receive only limited benefits from such intraprocedural data streams due to the lack of integration between robots and imaging systems with sufficiently high resolution and framerate. In this seminar\, I report on work with medical robots that use optical coherence tomography to guide needle insertions for cornea transplantation\, enhance surgeon efficiency with live volumetric guidance\, and perform autonomous eye imaging. In addition\, I discuss using real-time image feedback to adaptively acquire images that break the framerate-resolution barrier during live 3D imaging.\n\nBio:\nMark Draelos\, MD\, PhD\, is a surgically-trained physician and engineer who develops novel applications of medical robotics and imaging to improve patient care. After finishing Duke University’s Medical Scientist Training Program where he studied biomedical engineering under Prof. Joseph Izatt\, Mark completed an internship in general surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Currently\, he is an Assistant Professor of Robotics and Ophthalmology at the University of Michigan\, where he directs the Image-Guided Medical Robotics Laboratory. Mark has received K99/R00 support from the National Eye Institute.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91712262512

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Restoring confidence in our democracy
DESCRIPTION:Democracy has been increasingly contested around the world. A majority of Americans are not satisfied with how democratic systems in the United States are functioning. In a climate of deep partisan antagonism and widespread misinformation\, confidence in our elections has been declining for a myriad of reasons. The real-world implications of this moment cannot be overstated.\n\nJoin us for a conversation hosted at the Ford School by The Carter Center and the Gerald R. Ford Foundation that tackles how to buttress voter confidence in our democracy. Former Michigan U.S. Representatives Andy Levin (D-MI) and Peter Meijer (R-MI) and Amb (ret) Susan D. Page\, Michigan Law and Ford School professor from practice and Carter Center trustee\, will explore the bipartisan challenge of restoring faith in our democratic systems and highlight ways individuals can be part of the solution as we work together to uphold the standards of our democracy.\n\nThis event is hosted at the University of Michigan as a partnership between The Carter Center and the Gerald R. Ford Foundation. Political rivals and close collaborators\, Presidents Carter and Ford held a shared understanding of the sanctity of our democratic systems. Since its founding in 1982\, The Carter Center has focused its efforts outside the United States. Drawing from this expertise\, the organization has shifted attention to the challenges faced in the United States. The Center’s Democracy Program supports U.S. elections by bolstering democratic norms and values\, increasing trust and understanding of the electoral process\, and responding to the challenges posed by mis-\, dis- and mal-information. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation has long partnered with the Ford School on educational programming that serves the public interest. The Foundation advances the principle that public order requires the cultivation of virtue within both the citizenry and political leaders. Its emphasis on civic education\, civility\, personal and political integrity\, service to community and nation\, political cooperation and compromise\, and courage reflects the life and career of President Ford.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Robin Frohardt - Penny Stamps Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:“I really find a lot of freedom in limitation. If the object was to make anything out of anything\, then I feel frozen. But if you told me\, you can just make a grocery store out of plastic bags\, then I feel like I have an infinite amount of possibilities.” -Robin Frohardt\nRobin Frohardt is an award-winning artist living in Brooklyn\, NY\, known for her highly detailed constructions within narrative based film\, performance\, puppetry and sculpture. Frohardt uses found materials to create richly detailed worlds that highlight the trivialities of daily life. Often working with cardboard\, plastic bags\, and other materials typically considered disposable\, Frohardt creates highly intricate fabrications out of recognizable artifacts. \nFrohardt’s performance and puppetry-based work has been presented at St. Ann’s Warehouse and HERE in New York City\, as well as national venues including the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts and the NEXTNOW Festival in Maryland. Her theatrical work has earned her a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Creative Capital Award\, a DisTil Fellowship from Carolina Performing Arts\, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship\, a Residency at Olson Kundig\, a renowned design architecture firm in Seattle\, and multiple Jim Henson Foundation Grants. Her play THE PIGEONING\, hailed by the New York Times as “a tender\, fantastical symphony of the imagination\,” debuted in 2013 and has been translated into German\, Greek\, Arabic\, and Turkish. Her films have been official selections at The Telluride Film Festival\, Aspen Shortsfest\, The One Earth Film Festival\, and BAM. \nFrohardt’s latest major project\, THE PLASTIC BAG STORE\, premiered in Times Square in 2020 and has since toured to Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Adelaide\, Austin. A public art installation and immersive film experience\, THE PLASTIC BAG STORE uses humor\, craft\, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically\, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics. Stocked with hand-made sculpted objects made from discarded single-use packaging\, the store transforms into an immersive\, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry\, shadow play\, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic\, sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations.\nTHE PLASTIC BAG STORE premieres in Ann Arbor on January 17.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Heaven as a Way of Thinking: Dante's Paradiso
DESCRIPTION:What is heaven for? The last third of Dante's Divine Comedy has been seen as the most alien to the modern mind-set. Paradise is often understood as somewhere else\, which can make its relevance to the here-and-now seem tangential\, even suspect. Just as all stories are illuminated from their end\, Paradiso gives us not only a vista in retrospect\, but also a glimpse of the underlying pattern of the phenomenal world. It is\, therefore\, not \"elsewhere\" so much as another way of reading what appears before us. What heaven is for is analogous to what literature is for.\n\nAlison Cornish is currently Professor of Italian Studies at New York University and President of the Dante Society of America. Before that\, she taught at the University of Michigan for 23 years. Her latest book\, Believing in Dante\, was published by Cambridge University Press this past year (2022).

SUMMARY:Film Screening:*Diamonds by the Decade*: The Best of CJS 75th Anniversary Film Series | *House*
DESCRIPTION:Tickets may be purchased at: https://myumi.ch/843Dg\n\nHow to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie *House* (*Hausu*)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of *Scooby-Doo* as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits\, a demonic house cat\, a bloodthirsty piano\, and other ghoulish visions\, all realized by Obayashi via mattes\, animation\, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish\, *House* might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. \n\nRead more about the film\, including ratings\, at the IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076162/?ref_=tt_mv_close\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Joshua Davis // Luke Winslow King
DESCRIPTION:When Joshua Davis performed on NBC’s “The Voice\,” America at-large finally discovered what Michiganders have known for more than two decades. This amazing artist connects with a live audience\, nourishes their souls and feeds off of their love. Seeing him live has always revealed his core\, his essence. Joshua comes to Michigan with a new release\, “Live at the Robin\,” which is his first live solo acoustic release\, and the intimate environment of the theater was well suited for catching him in his element. Joshua remains a quintessentially Michigan guy\, drawing his inspiration from the rough-and-tumble streets of Motown to the arboreal Upper Peninsula. The mitten is his muse. “I’ve wanted to make this album for years”\, says Joshua. “And I’m so excited to share it. I love playing solo shows. It allows me the freedom to dig deep into my songs and really be in the moment with the audience.”\n\nLuke Winslow-King is a New Orleans–based guitarist\, singer\, composer\, producer\, and songwriter. His work is an eclectic mix that combines Mississippi Delta blues\, folk music\, traditional jazz\, and roots rock and roll. His alchemical songs blend contemporary ideas with styles from bygone eras producing a sound that is rustic and urbane\, elegant and entirely his own. It is a sound that looks to the past to move to the future. This\, along with his burgundy voice\, dapper attire and versatile guitar playing\, have earned him a reputation as a musician who delivers soulfully energetic and dynamic performances.
