Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n \r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east.\r\n \r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n \r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\r\n\r\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017, working within a variety of mediums, from photography and collage to animation and virtual\/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she\u2019s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\r\n\r\nPrior to her career in the arts, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art, technology, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\r\n\r\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, event spaces, fairs, and festivals. For five years, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets, activists, mothers and residents of Flint, Michigan, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs, video, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier\u2019s work, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures, Stamps Gallery, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. Both in Japan\u2014where the ethnographic data for this presentation originate\u2014and also across the world, social welfare systems too often \u201cproduce people who have no one,\u201d in the words of one of my interlocutors. What are the conditions for a welfare system that nurtures well-being that produces people who *have* people?\r\n \r\n Kate Goldfarb is a cultural and medical anthropologist. Her research focuses on the ways social relationships impact embodied experience, intersections between public policy and well-being, and the co-production of scientific knowledge and subjective experiences.\r\n \r\n Her first book project (*Fragile Kinships: Child Welfare and Well-Being in Japan*, currently under review) explored how social inclusion and exclusion shape holistic well-being. She conducted longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork with people connected to the Japanese child welfare system, examining the stakes of family disconnection in a country where the family is considered the basic social unit. This project investigated how kinship ideologies articulate with discourses of Japanese national and cultural identity, how these discourses shape understandings of what is \u201cnormal,\u201d and how these concepts of normality are caught up in global circuits of knowledge surrounding human development, child rights, and concepts of \u201ccare\u201d under the rubric of social welfare. This project\u2019s analytical frameworks are shaped by kinship theory, medical anthropology, semiotics, feminist studies of science, and queer theory, investigating how past and present social relationships are experienced in visceral, embodied terms.\r\n \r\n Her most recent research, based in the U.S., are collaborative projects that take the creation of and engagement with atmospheric data as a social field to study ethnographically. She is the Principal Investigator on a collaborative project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration \/ National Weather Service in applied meteorological research, \u201cSmoke Exposure and Underserved Wildland Fire Communities.\u201d An emergent project, Knowing Air, works to understand how shifting environmental factors\u2014including increased wildfire activity and the COVID-19 pandemic\u2014impact the ways people engage with air quality data (quantitative air quality indices and qualitative, sensory, story-based information) including measures of \u201cinvisible\u201d pollutants such as ozone. In this talk, I will discuss how context impacts the experience of stigmatization across two different studies; first by exploring how academic climate at different levels influences career attitudes for marginalized early career scholars. In this study, we suggest that the academic climate within the research group, department, and professional field are important factors for marginalized scholars (e.g., scholars of color, disabled scholars). Second, I will provide an in-depth analysis of stigma identity disclosure through both verbal and nonverbal modalities. Disclosing a concealable stigmatized identity\u2014such as a mental health disorder or sexual assault experience\u2014is a complex process whereby the risk of discrimination is weighed against the burden of concealing. However, little is known how individuals disclose across behavioural modalities, such as language and nonverbal movement dynamics, and situational contexts (e.g., professional settings). If such structures are realized, they may serve as the structural foundation to enable truly intelligent space systems (e.g., spacecraft, space robots, and space architectures) that can pass Turing test. The talk will begin with our work on developing a multifunctional bistable ultrathin composite boom for a 3U CubeSat that is scheduled to be launched to space in early 2023, followed by discussions on the mechanics of bistable booms. I will then present our research on soft electronic skins and microsystems for morphable space structures from a broader perspective beyond the bistable booms. I will conclude the talk with my views on future collaborative, interdisciplinary, and long-term research that needs to be done to realize highly intelligent morphable space structures.\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker:\r\nDr. Xin Ning has been an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Pennsylvania State University since August 2018. Dr. Ning was a postdoctoral research associate from 2015 to 2018 at UIUC, where he worked on soft electronics. Dr. Ning received his Ph.D. in Aeronautics in 2015 from Caltech, where he studied buckling-resistant thin shells. Dr. Ning\u2019s research focuses on aerospace structures with interdisciplinary work across mechanics, soft electronics, bioelectronics, etc. His group has been supported by AFOSR, NASA, ONR, NSF, and various other external and internal grants. interactions. When coupled with live 3D imaging, such robots can independently guide surgical instruments in real time. In practice, however, patients receive only limited benefits from such intraprocedural data streams due to the lack of integration between robots and imaging systems with sufficiently high resolution and framerate. In this seminar, I report on work with medical robots that use optical coherence tomography to guide needle insertions for cornea transplantation, enhance surgeon efficiency with live volumetric guidance, and perform autonomous eye imaging. In addition, I discuss using real-time image feedback to adaptively acquire images that break the framerate-resolution barrier during live 3D imaging.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nMark Draelos, MD, PhD, is a surgically-trained physician and engineer who develops novel applications of medical robotics and imaging to improve patient care. After finishing Duke University\u2019s Medical Scientist Training Program where he studied biomedical engineering under Prof. Joseph Izatt, Mark completed an internship in general surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Frohardt uses found materials to create richly detailed worlds that highlight the trivialities of daily life. Often working with cardboard, plastic bags, and other materials typically considered disposable, Frohardt creates highly intricate fabrications out of recognizable artifacts. \r\nFrohardt\u2019s performance and puppetry-based work has been presented at St. Ann\u2019s Warehouse and HERE in New York City, as well as national venues including the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts and the NEXTNOW Festival in Maryland. Her theatrical work has earned her a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Creative Capital Award, a DisTil Fellowship from Carolina Performing Arts, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, a Residency at Olson Kundig, a renowned design architecture firm in Seattle, and multiple Jim Henson Foundation Grants. Her play THE PIGEONING, hailed by the New York Times as \u201ca tender, fantastical symphony of the imagination,\u201d debuted in 2013 and has been translated into German, Greek, Arabic, and Turkish.
