DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n   \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n   \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n   \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n   \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Davis talks about using restorative justice to promote community peace and healing — to interrupt the racialized school to prison pipeline and mass incarceration\, to transform historical harm against African-Americans\, and to address other injustices.\n\nDavis is a long-time social justice activist and civil rights trial attorney\, and has been active in the Civil Rights\, Black liberation\, women's\, prisoners'\, peace\, anti-racial violence\, and anti-apartheid movements. She is a professor and scholar with a PhD in Indigenous Knowledge\, and is the founding director of Restorative Justice of Oakland Youth in Oakland\, California.\n\nThis event is part of the U-M Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“The Water Remembers” Performance by The Sister Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a final event to\ncelebrate the powerful work of MacArthur Genius Awardee LaToya Ruby Frazier\, who\ncollaborated with artists and activists Shea Cobb\, Amber Hasan and their\nfamilies documenting\, from 2016 - 2021\, how they coped with one of the most\ndevastating man-made ecological crises in the US\, the Flint Water Crisis. \n “The Water\nRemembers” is a performance by Flint-based artist collective\, The Sister Tour.\nThis special event is a performative ethnographic experience that reframes and\nilluminates the spiritual and physical connections (and at times complicated\nrelationships) between Black Women and Water. The event will feature a \"The\nWater Remembers\" performance followed by a post-performance conversation with\nthe performers and a reception with light refreshments.Amber Hasan of The Sister Tour writes ‘For Black women water has often served as a reminder of how blessed we\nare. Regardless of religious affiliation\, we have a sacred relationship\nwith the waters of the world and have always worked to live in concert with\nwater\, protecting it when necessary\, and at other times using the water as a refuge. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day\, the Ford School welcomes former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.\n\nJohnson will kick off the event by reflecting on the life and legacy of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and what that means to him as a fellow Morehouse Man. Following his remarks\, he’ll sit down for a conversation with Dean Celeste Watkins-Hayes alongside Ford School faculty experts to reflect on his work with the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defence through questions submitted from the Ford School community on policy issues ranging from immigration to civil liberties.\n\nFrom the speaker's bio\nJeh Johnson is a partner in the law firm of Paul\, Weiss\, Rifkind\, Wharton & Garrison\, LLP\, who in public life was Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017)\, General Counsel of the Department of Defense (2009-2012)\, General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force (1998-2001)\, and an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York (1989-1991). As Secretary of Homeland Security\, Johnson was the head of the third largest cabinet department of the U.S. government\, consisting of 230\,000 personnel and 22 components\, including TSA\, Customs and Border Protection\, Immigration and Customs Services\, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services\, the Coast Guard\, the Secret Service\, and FEMA. \n\nAs General Counsel of the Department of Defense\, Johnson is credited with being the legal architect for the U.S. military’s counterterrorism efforts in the Obama Administration. In 2010\, Johnson co-authored the report that paved the way for the repeal of the Don't Ask\, Don't Tell by Congress later that year. \n\nJohnson is a 2022 recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor\, a 2021 recipient of the American Lawyer’s Lifetime Achievement Award\, as “an American statesman [who] has devoted his career to the public interest\,” and a 2018 recipient of the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Award\, presented at the Reagan Presidential Library\, for “contribut[ing] greatly to the defense of our nation\,” and “guiding us through turbulent times with courage and wisdom.”    \n\nIn private life\, in addition to practicing law\, Johnson is on the board of directors of Lockheed Martin\, U.S. Steel\, the Council on Foreign Relations\, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City\, the Center for a New American Security\, and is a trustee of Columbia University. Johnson is a regular commentator on NBC\, CBS\, MSNBC\, CNN\, FOX\, Bloomberg TV and other news networks. Johnson is a graduate of Morehouse College (1979) and Columbia Law School (1982) and the recipient of 12 honorary degrees.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Steven Kahn\nProfessor of Mathematics\, Wayne State University (WSU)\nCo-Founder\, WSU Math Corps\nDirector\, WSU Center for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics\n\nTitle:  Math Corps: Social Justice Through Loving and Believing in Kids--and a few Equations \n\nAbstract: For over 30 years\, the Wayne State University Math Corps—through summer camp and Saturday programs—has been working to provide Detroit’s children with the kinds of educational and lifetime opportunities that all children should have. Over the past several years\, the Math Corps at U(M) has been doing the same\, serving children from Ypsilanti. Rooted in social justice and based on a philosophy of “loving and believing in kids”\, the Math Corps has achieved dramatic results and garnered national recognition and widespread acclaim. This talk will examine some of the principles and practices that drive the program\, and that have been the most responsible for its success. DESCRIPTION:Ever since their first meeting\, over 20 years ago\, Robert Jones and Matt Watroba have been musical partners. Their relationship started when they hosted back-to-back radio shows on WDET-FM\, Detroit. Later on they started performing together and in doing so discovered a friendship based on mutual respect and a love for traditional American music. For Matt and Robert\, American roots music (folk\, blues\, spirituals\, work songs\, chants\, etc.) is music that matters. This is the music that America and the world have in common.  It is music that reflects history\, social change\, migration\, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse\, direct and powerful. This year's program is a celebration of the life and musical legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.
