Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the nineteen forties and fifties has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\n​\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like JuicyFruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. In 2017 Carl's work was a part of Detroit's contribution to The Saint-Etienne Design Biennale in France. 2017 also saw the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead & Lost in Detroit. Spring of 2018 saw Carl complete a residency at MacDowell in New Hampshire. While there he finished the writing and illustration of his graphic novel and currently the book is in negotiation for publication. A private lexicon take son different forms\, syntactical\, vernacular\, and sometimes repetition of certain states of being and actual excerpts from one’s work that recur in search of the perfect or complete expression the poet can’t attain but can’t stop trying to attain. \n\nA poet and a practicing physician of internal medicine\, Fady Joudah\, a Palestinian American\, born in Texas\, grew up in Libya and Saudi Arabia before returning to the US to pursue a medical career. He is also a translator from the Arabic of several volumes of poetry. The sparse VAE learns a set of latent factors (representations) which summarize the associations in the observed data features. The underlying model is sparse in that each observed feature (i.e. each dimension of the data) depends on a small subset of the latent factors. As examples\, in ratings data each movie is only described by a few genres\; in text data each word is only applicable to a few topics\; in genomics\, each gene is active in only a few biological processes. Whereas increasing evidence reveals how MAPs impact the interactions between motors and microtubules\, critical questions remain about the impact of the cargo membrane on transport. Here we combined in vitro optical trapping with theoretical approaches to determine the effect of a lipid cargo membrane on kinesin-based transport in the presence of MAP tau. Our results demonstrate that attaching kinesin to a fluid lipid membrane reduces the inhibitory effect of tau on kinesin. Moreover\, adding cholesterol\, which reduces kinesin diffusion in the cargo membrane\, amplifies the inhibitory effect of tau on kinesin binding in a dosage-dependent manner. We propose that reduction of kinesin diffusion in the cargo membrane underlies the effect of cholesterol on kinesin binding in the presence of tau\, and we provide a simple model for this proposed mechanism. Our study establishes a direct link between cargo membrane cholesterol and MAP-based regulation of kinesin-1. The cholesterol effects uncovered here may more broadly extend to other lipid alterations that impact motor diffusion in the cargo membrane\, including those associated with aging and neurological diseases. Western Cultures as Thailand’s Strategy for Independence DESCRIPTION:In the nineteenth century\, the second wave of western imperialism hit Southeast Asia. Unable to resist western military forces\, Southeast Asia had to surrender to the power of the West. Only one country\, Thailand\, survived and is proclaimed on the history pages as the sole country in Southeast Asia that survived Western colonization. How Thailand escaped the unbeatable force of the west was always a discussion in many areas of Southeast Asian Studies. One of the key strategies that many scholars discussed was the reformation of cultures through westernization. The upper class of Siamese society employed western cultures\, especially in the performing arts\, to transform their traditions as equivalent to the standards of the west. The strength of the nation was presented with these reformed cultures that were the work of East-West innovation by Siamese noblemen. This lecture will clarify how Siamese society had enculturated western cultures prior to the nineteenth century\, along with the nineteenth-century accelerated modernization in the performing arts through westernization to stop the colonization by the West.\n\nSpeaker Bio\nJittapim (Nan) Yamprai is a musicologist and ethnomusicologist with research specialization in the music of Southeast Asia\, cross-cultural interaction in the music of East and West in Thailand\, music\, and diplomacy of the Siamese and French in the seventeenth century\, Music in the Ayutthaya\, music\, and politics\, and the music and culture of the Burmese refugees in the United States. She received her doctoral degree in music history and literature from the University of Northern Colorado and two master’s degrees—ethnomusicology from Mahidol University\, Thailand\, and information and library science from the University of North Texas.\n\nHer writings include the establishment of western music in Thailand\, sacred music in the catholic church of Thailand\, Southeast Asian musical materials for contemporary compositions\, Franco-Siamese music diplomacy in the seventeenth century\, etc. Jittapim was an associate professor at the University of Northern Colorado\, teaching in music\, Asian studies\, and anthropology departments. She works as the artistic director of the Greeley Multi-Cultural Festival and co-artistic director of Beethoven in the Rockies Concert Series. These populations include minority workers\, employees with disabilities\, immigrants\, contingent and other precarious workers\, and low-income workers. The current body of accountability literature rests heavily on assumptions and data based on middle class\, Western\, Caucasian white-collar workers and college students (Norenzayan & Heine\, 2005\; Hall et al.\, 2017). While basic elements of accountability should exist across all employees\, there are aspects of accountability that traditionally marginalized employees face which have not received the appropriate attention from researchers (Okazaki & Sue\, 2016). All employees operate within a web of accountabilities (Frink & Klimoski\, 1998). Workers must balance multiple and often competing accountabilities (Hall\, Bowen\, Ferris\, Royle\, & Fitzgibbons\, 2007). Yet\, research suggests that minority\, female\, immigrant\, low-income\, precarious workers (e.g.\, gig or contingent workers) or otherwise traditionally marginalized groups may have additional accountabilities that they must balance (O’Donnell\, 2020). Thus\, our research seeks to examine the following: 1. how do minoritized/marginalized identities prioritize their accountabilities and 2. what can employers do to assist these workers in balancing their additional accountabilities. For example\, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study has collected data from 11\,880 children ages 9-10 across 21 U.S. research sites\, as the largest long-term study of brain development and child health\; and the Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study will enroll 7\,500 pregnant women across 25 research sites and follow them from pregnancy through early childhood\, as the largest long-term study of early brain and child development in the U.S. Both studies aim to reflect the sociodemographic diversity of the target population to enable characterization of natural variability and trajectories. Without probability sampling as the touchstone for randomization-based inferences\, the data quality and analysis validity require rigorous evaluations and potentially rely on untestable assumptions. The data collection process also presents various challenges during practical operation. \n \nIn this talk\, I look into both inference and design schemes to study the impact of data collection on population science. First\, using the ABCD study as an example of secondary data analysis\, I discuss inference approaches focusing on multilevel regression and poststratification for population generalizability and latent subgroup detection for population heterogeneity in brain activity and association studies. Second\, I introduce the HBCD study design. HBCD also aims to include individuals demographically and behaviorally similar to those in the substance exposure group\, but without exposure\, to enable valid causal inference in a non-experimental study design. I discuss our proposed weighting\, matching\, and modeling strategies to leverage analysis goals to inform the design and dashboard monitoring for adaptive sample enrollment. \n \nBio\n \nYajuan Si is a Research Associate Professor in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Dr Si’s research lies in cutting-edge methodology development in streams of Bayesian statistics\, linking design- and model-based approaches for survey inference\, missing data analysis\, confidentiality protection involving the creation and analysis of synthetic datasets\, and causal inference with observational data. \n\nMichigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)\nThe University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. A fruitful way to study their geometry is by considering stratifications of the space. One such stratification is the Ekedahl-Oort (E-O) stratification defined with respect to the structure of the p-torsion group scheme. We follow the work of Moonen and Wooding to investigate the interaction of the E-O strata with other aspects of the geometry of the Shimura variety. We present a few novel results and observations in some specific cases\, as well as some future directions. Time permitting\, we'll also talk about the Newton stratification. In general\, these extinction events share many common factors: they are all geologically abrupt (occurring on timescales on the order of a few million years or less)\, they are commonly associated with major shifts in climate\, and four out of the five mass extinction events correlate in time with the eruption of large igneous provinces (LIPs). However\, to properly understand the ingredients that are necessary to cause large-scale ecosystem collapse\, and to what extent these ancient events can inform our modern ecological crises and search for habitable planets\, we have to step back from these broad generalizations and look into these extinction events in more detail. This presentation gives an overview of recent advances on this topic\, specifically focused on the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event\, including high-precision geochronology\, new methods for the assessment of eruptive tempo of LIPs\, and multidisciplinary approaches\, that are helping to clarify the causes and consequences of mass extinction events. As physicists desire more nuclear reactions\, the power of the particle beam has been increasing. A prime example of a state-of-art\, high-power accelerator is the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) recently completed at Michigan State University (MSU). Open for users in 2022\, FRIB is poised to become one of world’s most powerful heavy ion accelerators. As a result of the increased beam power\, thermal and radiation damage managements of the beam-interacting components in the high-power accelerator facilities are becoming progressively challenging. On the other hand\, the nuclear reactor industry has collected vast amount of expertise in the similar technical challenges. We believe more actively introducing the nuclear engineering expertise to the high-power accelerator field would greatly help advance the development of the high-power accelerators.\n\nIn this seminar\, I will talk about a brief overview of FRIB and variety of its components and their technical challenges related to the thermal and radiation damage managements. These components include charge stripper\, charge selector\, production target\, beam dump. One of the topics that I will spend time as an example of a success story of the application of the nuclear engineering expertise is the recent development of the liquid lithium stripper. Taking advantage of the nuclear-engineering-based liquid metal technology available at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)\, ANL and FRIB have developed the free-jet liquid lithium film. Various previous experiments demonstrated that a liquid lithium free jet is well compatible with an accelerator environment and could handle extreme thermal loading as expected. \nSubsequently FRIB built the first free-jet liquid lithium stripper to form a fast-flowing (> 50 m/s)\, very thin (~10 m)\, liquid lithium free jet in the FRIB accelerator beam line. Finally the first demonstration of the free-jet liquid lithium stripper was successfully carried out\, stably stripping variety of heavy ion beams at FRIB. To follow the success of the stripper development and lead FRIB to success\, FRIB wants more nuclear engineers who can tackle thermal and radiation damage managements in the devices that are critical to achieve the ultimate goal of 400 kW uranium beam acceleration.\n\nBio: Takuji Kanemura studied nuclear engineering at Osaka University in Japan\, and received his PhD in Engineering at Osaka University in 2010. The title of his PhD thesis was “Research on wave characteristics of liquid lithium free-surface flow”. He has been interested and involved in liquid metal applications in extreme environments\, particularly windowless high power beam targets that involve thermal-hydraulics\, fluid dynamic stability of jets\, mass transportation in vacuum\, and related technologies. \nUntil he joined the FRIB Laboratory in Michigan State University in 2016\, He was involved in R&Ds of the liquid lithium target of IFMIF in Japan (IFMIF stands for the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility). Since he joined the FRIB Lab\, he has been in charge of the liquid lithium charge stripper and various beam-intercepting devices in the FRIB accelerator. Mehbub Ali and Dev Kapur—these are pseudonyms—are cousins who work in parallel sectors of the religious music industry in Lucknow: Ali in the qawwali scene at Sufi shrines\, Kapur as a bhajan singer in Hindu festivals. As devotional musicians\, they enact a complex form of religious labor requiring technical skill\, mastery of particular aesthetic codes\, the enactment of devotion and the elicitation of affective states in listeners. Most of their audiences do not know that Ali and Kapur are also\, in a sense\, performing caste. To compete in an industry dominated by musicians from higher status groups\, the cousins have adopted titles and styles that—not always successfully—obscure their Dalit origins and imply savarna status. The central themes of JOINT will be told through the sounds of solo violinists\, the choreography of dancers\, and the lens of Venezuelan photographer\, Natali Herrera-Pacheco. \nThe months-long artistic process of connecting the students and developing the musical program\, rehearsing\, and integrating Natali’s photographic art will culminate in a 50 minute dynamic performance in Studio One of the new Dance Building on January 20th\, 2023. This space offers an amplitude of possibilities with respect to lighting design and staging\, to be explored in conjunction with Herrera-Pacheco’s powerful images projected behind the violinists and dancers. \nThe theme of the project explores the intersection of the physical body\, its individual joints and parts\, and the art we  create using them. JOINT refers literally to our physical joints\, the borders that shape the beautiful angles of our limbs from shoulders to the small knuckles in our fingers\, from our hip joints to our little pinky toe for balance. Of course\, JOINT also intimates teamwork and togetherness\, and this project reflects that in the basic fibers of its conception. \nAs a violin teacher\, Professor Belen focuses much of her teaching and research on the very visceral physical aspects of creating sound. Intertwining violinists’ bodies with the physical instrument is not far from the way dancers use their bodies to interact with spaces and each other. Professor Gillen encourages her dancers to create deeply expressive works and push boundaries as interpreters\, makers and performers.\nWe are connecting dancers and violinists\, pushing them to be expressive in ways outside of their usual comfort zones. Violinists typically perform with other string players\, while dancers often perform to pre-recorded tracks. The energy created in a LIVE interaction is sparked between hundreds of “joints” moving in tandem and in opposites on stage. \nThe Visuals\nThrough a multitude of visual arts\, Natali Herrera-Pacheco will express the concept of the body’s various frames and borders created by our physical joints\, while exploring the larger landscape of what it means for bodies\, sounds and kinetics to coexist and create a beautiful artistic experience. Her artistic voice as a woman of color goes beyond her camera\, and we are enjoying her inspiring interactions with the students leading up to this collaborative performance.
