They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n \r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east.\r\n \r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n \r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\r\n\r\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\r\n\r\nAbout the Artist\r\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\r\n\r\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017, working within a variety of mediums, from photography and collage to animation and virtual\/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she\u2019s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\r\n\r\nPrior to her career in the arts, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art, technology, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\r\n\r\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, event spaces, fairs, and festivals. What can black feminist thought and history teach us about the dangers of these conflicts? \r\n\r\nThe spring and summer of 1982 tend to be dominated in feminist historiography by the aftermath of the infamous 1982 Barnard Conference on Sexuality. Indeed, letters to the editors section of the July issue of off our backs from that year is dominated by reactions to the newspaper\u2019s coverage of the conference. But a set of statements printed within that same issue would set off a new set of controversies and bitter, contentious disagreements between lesbian feminists \u2013this time focused around racism, anti-semitism, and the 1982 Lebanon War. This controversy would reverberate for months afterwards in the pages of oob, in letters between individual feminists, and even at that year\u2019s NWSA conference. This paper examines not the debate itself but rather how relationships and solidarities were disrupted by it.\r\n\r\nSpecifically, I examine an archive centered around a set of statements and letters about the Israel Palestine conflict and the 1982 Lebanon War. Two from the Jewish lesbian feminist group Di Vilde Chayes, one from the group Women Against Imperialism, a response to Di Vilde Chayes by black feminist writer June Jordan, and, finally, a response to Jordan\u2019s letter by a group of feminists, including Audre Lorde and Barbara Smith. Through this archive, I seek to explore the stakes and consequences of lesbian feminist solidarities. When does coalition break down\u2014both on the individual and group level\u2014and what happens afterwards?\r\n\r\nThis case study taps into other instances I\u2019m interested in where racial and ethnic differences create fissures where understanding might have been. IceCube has been measuring a diffuse flux of high-energy (TeV and above) astrophysical neutrinos for almost a decade. The sources of the vast majority of these neutrinos remain elusive, but studies indicate that gamma-ray obscured sources may at least in parts be responsible. Most recently, IceCube reported strong evidence for TeV neutrino emission from NGC 1068, a well-known and nearby active galaxy. I will explain how IceCube searches for neutrinos from astrophysical sources and how recent improvements in our analysis methods enabled this result. When put into the multi-messenger context, in particular the non-detection of TeV gamma-rays by the MAGIC telescopes, this measurement suggests that the gamma-ray obscured vicinity of the central supermassive black hole acts as a cosmic hadron accelerator. The next steps are clear. Specifically, he is interested in and has explored several sub-fields of nonlinear optimization such as: (i) general nonlinear optimization algorithms, (ii) optimization algorithms for machine learning, (iii) constrained optimization, (iv) stochastic optimization, (v) derivative-free optimization, and (vi) distributed optimization.\r\n\r\nALGORITHMS FOR DETERMINISTICALLY CONSTRAINED STOCHASTIC OPTIMIZATION\r\n\r\nStochastic gradient and related methods for solving stochastic optimization problems have been studied extensively in recent years. It has been shown that such algorithms and much of their convergence and complexity guarantees extend in straightforward ways when one considers problems involving simple constraints, such as when one can perform projections onto the feasible region of the problem. However, settings with general nonlinear constraints have received less attention, and many of the approaches that have been proposed for solving such problems resort to using penalty or (augmented) Lagrangian methods, which are often not the most effective strategies. In this work, we propose and analyze stochastic optimization algorithms for deterministically constrained problems based on the sequential quadratic optimization (commonly known as SQP) methodology. We discuss the rationale behind our proposed techniques, convergence in expectation and complexity guarantees for our algorithms, and the results of preliminary numerical experiments that we have performed. Brady\r\nAssistant Professor\r\nKellogg School of Management, Northwestern University\r\n\r\nAs individuals and political leaders increasingly take to online networks for social interactions, it is important to understand how the platforms that host them can shape social knowledge of morality and politics. In this work, I propose that features of social media environments including dysfunctional human-algorithm interactions may be conducive to misperceptions of moral emotions at the individual and group level with consequences for intergroup conflict. Utilizing a Twitter field survey, I measured authors\u2019 outrage in real time and compared author reports to judgments made by observers. I find that social media users tend to overperceive moral outrage expression at the individual-level, inferring more intense outrage experiences from messages than the authors of those messages themselves actually report. Individual-level overperceptions were also associated with greater social media use to learn about politics. Follow-up experiments find that these individual misperceptions cause misperceptions of collective outrage, which also amplifies perceptions of hostile communication norms, group affective polarization and ideological extremity. Together, these results highlight how individual-level misperceptions of online emotions produce collective misperceptions that have the potential to exacerbate intergroup conflict. The formulas of average von Neumann entropy with and without particle number constrains have been recently obtained, whereas the main results of this work are the exact yet explicit formulas of variances for both cases. For the latter case of no particle number constrain, the results resolve a recent conjecture on the corresponding variance. Different than the existing methods in computing variances over other generic state models, proving the results of this work relies on a new simplification framework. The framework consists of a set of new tools in simplifying finite summations of what we refer to as dummy summation and re-summation techniques. As a byproduct, the proposed framework leads to various new transformation formulas of hypergeometric functions.
