SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Educating Ethical Engineers
DESCRIPTION:In today’s society\, the need to graduate engineers who are conscious of their ethical and professional responsibilities is more important than ever. This is especially difficult given the current media environment that publicizes reports of algorithmic bias\, drone-based surveillance\, and emissions falsification (among other issues) but provides few positive role models for students. While engineering programs have made significant strides to incorporate ethics instruction into the engineering curriculum\, there is little evidence about which approaches best prepare students to address the ethical challenges they will face in the workforce. In this session\, Dr. Finelli will present research about the state of undergraduate ethics instruction and it’s long term impact\, propose a new approach to ethics instruction\, and offer two course-based approaches to better educate ethical engineers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tania El Khoury: Cultural Exchange Rate
DESCRIPTION:Lebanese artist Tania El Khoury examines the universal\, never-ending story of migration through a family diary\, and the recognition that the cruelest of borders are invisible to the eye and present in everyday life.\nCultural Exchange Rate is an interactive live art project in which El Khoury shares her family memoirs of life in border villages between Lebanon and Syria. The installation is based on recorded interviews with El Khoury&#039\;s late grandmother\, oral histories collected from her village in Lebanon\, the discovery of lost relatives in Mexico City\, and the family&#039\;s attempt to secure dual citizenship. The audience is invited to immerse their heads into one family’s secret boxes to explore sounds\, images\, and textures that trace more than a century of border crossings. \nTimed ticketed entry\, with viewings at 11:30\, 1:00\, 3:00\, 4:30\, 6:00\, and 7:30 daily. 10 people per time slot.Tickets are required for entry and can be purchased at UMS.org.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar - Hybrid - New approaches for modeling variation in rates of trait evolution
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Rates of trait evolution vary markedly across the tree of life\, from the accelerated evolution apparent in adaptive radiations to the remarkable evolutionary stasis exhibited by so-called \"living fossils\". Identifying and understanding the causes and consequences of such \"rate heterogeneity\" has critical implications for robustly testing evolutionary hypotheses and\, more generally\, elucidating how and why levels of phenotypic diversity vary across space\, time\, and taxa. For my dissertation\, I am developing novel phylogenetic comparative methods for inferring variation in rates of continuous trait evolution. These methods will fill key gaps in the comparative biologist's toolkit and provide researchers with more power and flexibility in exploring and dissecting rate heterogeneity across the tree of life.\n\nOur weekly lunch seminar series featuring internal speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Commutative Algebra Seminar: Degenerations of Ideals and Rings
DESCRIPTION:We may think of degeneration as a way to approximate a given ideal or ring by a possibly simpler ideal or ring. We will begin by understanding degenerations of an ideal in a polynomial ring to a monomial ideal (called Grobner degeneration). Analogously\, we will also consider toric degenerations of rings. Finally\, we will see some concrete applications of these techniques. Time permitting\, we will also discuss different techniques for producing such degenerations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Richard Guo Research Associate\, Statistical Laboratory\, University of Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many modern statistical procedures are randomized in the sense that the output is a random function of data. For example\, many procedures employ data splitting\, which randomly divides the dataset into disjoint parts for separate purposes. Despite their flexibility and popularity\, data splitting and other constructions of randomized procedures have obvious drawbacks. First\, two analyses of the same dataset may lead to different results due to the extra randomness introduced. Second\, randomized procedures typically lose statistical power because the entire sample is not fully utilized. \n\nTo address these drawbacks\, in this talk\, I will study how to properly combine the results from multiple realizations (such as through multiple data splits) of a randomized procedure. I will introduce rank-transformed subsampling as a general method for delivering large sample inference of the combined result under minimal assumptions. I will illustrate the method with three applications: (1) a “hunt-and-test” procedure for detecting cancer subtypes using high-dimensional gene expression data\, (2) testing the hypothesis of no direct effect in a sequentially randomized trial and (3) calibrating cross-fit “double machine learning” confidence intervals. For these problems\, our method is able to de-randomize and improve power or coverage. Moreover\, in contrast to existing approaches for combining p-values\, our method enjoys type-I error control that asymptotically approaches the nominal level. This new development opens up the possibility of designing procedures that explicitly randomize and de-randomize: extra randomness is introduced to make the problem easier before being removed.\n\nThis talk is based on joint work with Rajen Shah. \n\nBio: Richard Guo is a research associate in the Statistical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge\, mentored by Rajen Shah. In Spring 2022\, he was the Richard M. Karp Research Fellow in the causality program at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing. He received his PhD in Statistics from University of Washington in 2021\, advised by Thomas Richardson\, for which he received the Z. W. Birnbaum Award. His research interests include graphical models\, causal inference and replicability of data analysis. \n\nhttps://unbiased.co.in/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ME Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Adventures in Cell Herding: Engineering and Control of Multi-agent Cellular Swarms\n\nPresented by\nDaniel Cohen\nAssistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering\nPrinceton University\n\nRoom 2505 GG Brown\nTuesday\, January 24\, 2023\n4:30 p.m.\nME Seminar Zoom link \nPasscode 309714\nAdd ME Seminar to Google Calendar\n\nAbstract\nWe are working to accomplish for cells something akin to what a shepherd and sheepdogs bring to flocks of sheep: control over large-scale collective cellular motion. As coordinated cellular motion is foundational to many forms of multicellular life\, being able to ‘herd’ or program large-scale cell migration raises exciting possibilities for accelerated healing\, tissue engineering\, and novel biomaterials. We treat tissues as living\, multi-agent systems allowing us to combine approaches from disparate fields—control theory\, active matter mechanics\, tissue engineering\, and materials—both to better understand the rules of cellular crowds and to build new tools to ‘herd’ large-scale cell behaviors. One approach we use is guided self-assembly of tissues\, where we establish precise initial conditions and let the tissues develop spontaneously. Here\, we combine machine learning\, biomechanical modeling\, and tissue micropatterning to: characterize the rules of collective migration within tissues of different types\; connect cell-cell mechanics to large-scale collective dynamics\; and build complex ‘tissue tessellations’ through precise control of healing boundaries between tissues. In contrast to self-assembly\, we are also developing tools that allow for true\, interactive control of tissue growth and form at the multicellular level. Here\, we use a unique bioelectric cue—electrotaxis—to literally program large-scale collective cell migration\, enabled by our ‘SCHEEPDOG’ bioreactor. In this case\, ionic currents manipulate cellular signaling allowing control of both cell direction and speed\, allowing us to: accelerate the ‘healing’ of gap injuries with in vitro tissues\; investigate how cell-cell interaction mechanics modulate ‘controllability’\; and manipulate the growth of 3D tissues and organoids.\n\nBio\nDaniel Cohen is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University and a founding member of the new Princeton Bioengineering Institute (PBI). He trained first in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton\, followed by a joint Ph.D. in Bioengineering at UC Berkeley/UCSF\, the Physiology Course at the MBL at Woods Hole\, and as a Life Sciences Research Foundation Fellow at Stanford University. He started his lab at Princeton in 2018\, where his work has been awarded an NIH Early Career MIRA award and an NSF CAREER award. His works span dinosaur and organismal mechanics\, tissue engineering\, biomaterials\, and bio-electromechanics. Outside the laboratory\, he is heavily engaged in science communication\, running both theatrical performances for the public and the yearly\, week-long Lab Tales workshop at Princeton to train researchers in the hidden histories and human stories behind modern scientific research.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2023 Dinkeloo Memorial Lecture: Philippe Block\, \"Disrupting Concrete Construction: digital\, sustainable and circular\"
DESCRIPTION:Disrupting Concrete Construction: digital\, sustainable and circular\n\nConcrete does not want to be a beam\; it wants to be an arch. Unreinforced concrete can be considered an artificial stone\, so the natural geometries for this material happy in compression follow the same structural principles that have kept Gothic cathedrals standing for centuries. It allows significantly reducing the amount of material needed but also building with lesser emitting materials. Recent developments in computational design\, engineering\, and construction-scale digital fabrication allow the introduction of concrete as a truly sustainable solution for spanning structures such as floor “slabs” or footbridges. This talk will introduce how we can disrupt concrete construction\, providing solutions that are lightweight\, low in embodied emissions\, and use construction demolition waste. Designing for circularity\, a discrete masonry logic is introduced\, enabling dry-assembled prefab\, demountable and reusable or easily recyclable at the end of its life. Lastly\, we will go beyond an academic exercise to propose economically competitive innovations available at scale and globally. Sounds too good to be true?\n\nPhilippe Block is professor at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at ETH Zurich\, where he leads the Block Research Group (BRG) with Dr. Tom Van Mele and is Head of the Institute. Philippe is also the Director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) on Digital Fabrication. He studied architecture and structural engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2009. Philippe and Tom apply their research into practice providing innovation in (computational) design\, engineering\, fabrication\, and construction of sustainable\, circular\, and economical structures\, addressing climate change by significantly reducing embodied emissions\, utilizing fewer single-use resources\, and minimizing construction waste.\n\nFollowing the motto “strength through geometry” and the principles of traditional unreinforced masonry construction\, the BRG translates this knowledge into projects such as the unreinforced stone Armadillo Vault\, the thin\, flexibly formed concrete shells of the NEST HiLo and KnitCandela\, the 3D-concrete-printed masonry bridge Striatus\, and the Rippmann Floor System (RFS)\, a lightweight and ultra-low-embodied floor system.\n\nThis memorial lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo's extraordinary contributions to architecture and commemorate excellence in architectural design. This annual lecture celebrates those designers whose work combines design excellence with structural ingenuity.
