SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Queer World Conversations
DESCRIPTION:See other Spectrum Center events: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events\n\nWe'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester\, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics\, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic\, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations\, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.\n\nTopics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required\, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want\, bring your friends\, and let's have a Conversation!\n\nUpcoming topics:\n4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity\n\nThere are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body \"should\" look like\, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever\, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative\, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?\n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event\, there is space to report that in the registration\, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form\, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented\, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Bioethics Grand Rounds-From Cross-Cultural Psychiatry to Clinical Practice: What To Do About the Self/Other Boundary in Schizophrenia
DESCRIPTION:This talk will bring together perspectives from philosophy\, anthropology\, psychiatry\, and psychology to demonstrate how cultural variations in the placement of the self-other boundary impact approaches to mental illness and the psychiatric patient-clinician relationship. Dr. Sajber will compare the clinical model of Western industrialized societies to the treatment of schizophrenia in Zanzibar\, Tanzania\, where the locus of control characteristic of sociocultural beliefs is in much more fortuitous alignment with the caregiving environment’s emotional temperature. She will provide philosophical analyses of cultural beliefs which place a person’s agency outside of the self (such as beliefs in super-human powers or dependence on community support) and explain why\, when combined with communications carrying low emotional charge\, these turn out to be less stigmatizing within the community\, and create better treatment outcomes for schizophrenia in both clinical and community-based settings.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Making Autocracy Worse: The End of the Myth of Authoritarian Competence in Putin's Russia
DESCRIPTION:If Ukraine has become the beachhead for European democracy and security\, then Russia is the vanguard of modern autocracy. Under almost 23 years of Putin's rule of Russia\, the country's political system has devolved into a repressive\, personalistic and internationally aggressive form of authoritarianism. The implications for Europe and global democracy are decidedly negative\, as we are seeing in Ukraine currently. But the implications are increasingly problematic also for Putin’s regime. The deepening of autocracy in Russia (making it worse or more repressive) is a result of more than a decade of declining regime performance. The war in Ukraine has now exploded the already ailing myth of competency that Putin has perpetuated since the early 2000’s and has made his regime vulnerable to elite and social pressure. Professor Stoner will use the Russian case to examine why autocracies sometimes get worse over time\, and what this process tells us about regime resilience. \n\nKathryn Stoner is the deputy director at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University and a senior fellow at the Center on Democracy\, Development\, and the Rule of Law\, and the Center on International Security and Cooperation at FSI. She teaches in the Department of Political Science at Stanford\, and in the Program on International Relations\, as well as in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy Program. Prior to her appointment at Stanford\, she was on the faculty at Princeton University for nine years\, jointly appointed to the Department of Politics and the Woodrow Wilson School for International and Public Affairs. At Princeton she received the Ralph O. Glendinning Preceptorship awarded to outstanding junior faculty. She also served as a visiting associate professor of political science at Columbia University\, and an assistant professor of political science at McGill University. She has held fellowships at Harvard University as well as the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington\, DC.\n \nIn addition to many articles and book chapters on contemporary Russia\, she is the author or co-editor of five books: *Transitions to Democracy: A Comparative Perspective*\, written and edited with Michael A. McFaul (Johns Hopkins 2013)\; *Autocracy and Democracy in the Post-Communist World*\, co-edited with Valerie Bunce and Michael A. McFaul (Cambridge\, 2010)\; *Resisting the State: Reform and Retrenchment in Post-Soviet Russia* (Cambridge\, 2006)\; *After the Collapse of Communism: Comparative Lessons of Transitions*\, coedited with Michael A. McFaul (Cambridge\, 2004)\; and *Local Heroes: The Political Economy of Russian Regional Governance* (Princeton\, 1997). She is currently finishing a book project entitled \"Russia Resurrected: Its Power and Purpose in a New Global Order\" (Oxford University Press\, forthcoming). She received a B.A. and M.A. in political science from the University of Toronto\, and a Ph.D. in government from Harvard University.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/qAb1M\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DISCO Network Lecture Series | Queer Silence: Rhetorical Quieting and an Erotics of Absence | Logan Smilges in Conversation with Remi Yergeau and David Adelman
DESCRIPTION:The value of visibility is contingent on a variable\, embodyminded social currency. Being seen tends to benefit most the people whose bodies and minds adhere closest to norms structured by whiteness\, cisnormativity\, and abledness. In their interactive talk\, J. Logan Smilges shows how queer and otherwise marginalized populations navigate the risks that subtend their precarious visibility. Centering their analysis on the dating app Grindr\, Smilges introduces profile pictures as a digital site for rhetorical quieting—a strategy whereby users regulate how their bodyminds signify to people around them. As part of their talk\, Smilges will offer an opportunity for attendees to evaluate how their own social media use is situated within a political matrix of presence and absence.J. Logan Smilges is an assistant professor of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia\, where they study the interanimation of gender\, sexuality\, and disability as medical\, social\, and political categories. Driven by commitments to transfeminism and disability justice\, Smilges is interested in the forms of solidarity practiced by trans\, queer\, and disabled people that engage the complicated histories conjoining all three communities. Their first book\, Queer Silence: On Disability and Rhetorical Absence (University of Minnesota Press 2022)\, attends to the mutual disavowals of silence and disability in queer politics\, and their second book\, Crip Negativity (University of Minnesota Press 2023)\, proposes a model for critical negativity in the field of disability studies. Their other work is published or forthcoming in Transgender Studies Quarterly\, College Composition and Communication\, Disability Studies Quarterly\, Rhetoric Review\, Peitho\, and elsewhere.M. Remi Yergeau is Associate Professor of Digital Studies and English at the University of Michigan. Their book\, Authoring Autism: On Rhetoric and Neurological Queerness\, was awarded the 2018 MLA First Book Prize\, the 2019 CCCC Lavender Rhetorics Book Award for Excellence in Queer Scholarship\, and the 2019 Rhetoric Society of America Book Award. They are currently at work on a second book project about disability\, digital rhetoric\, surveillance\, and (a)sociality\, tentatively titled Crip Data. Active in the neurodiversity movement\, they have previously served on the boards of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and the Autism National Committee (AutCom).David's research interests center disability and crip studies\, with a particular emphasis on disability media studies\, digital disability cultures\, disability film studies\, and critical sexuality studies. Through an interdisciplinary crip studies/feminist lens\, he pursues questions which emerge at the intersection of power\, culture\, technology\, identity\, and desire. His recent dissertation\, “Ambivalent Pleasures: Pleasure\, Desire\, Authenticity\, and the Production of Value in Online Disability Cultures\,” examines how discourses of “desirable disability” manifest in cultural productions and Internet publics. This project traces the circulation and intensification of such discourse in popular culture across a range of audiovisual material\, exploring the neoliberal commodification of identity politics that occurs and is contested\, online. He also maintains an artistic practice which centers experimental video as a means to explore disability culture\, aesthetics\, and politics. If you have any issues completing this registration process\, please reach out to Eric Mancini at dsi-administration@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Correspondence from the Soviet Zone: Northern Refugees and the Rise of Cold War Nationalism in South Korea\, 1945-1949
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This session is planned to be held both in-person and virtually EST through Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \n Register at: https://myumi.ch/pZnRe\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the U-M Department of History.\n\nCorrespondence from the Soviet Zone: Northern Refugees and the Rise of Cold War Nationalism in South Korea\, 1945-49” introduces the stories of northern Koreans who crossed the 38th parallel of the Korean peninsula between 1945 and 1949 and entered the US-occupied South. According to Moon’s study\, these migrants reached more than 1.4 million and were called North Korean refugees by the US military. In 1944\, the US State Department circulated papers on Korea and the Netherlands East Indies and analyzed the scale of population movements and potential disasters in the region after the collapse of the Japanese empire. Based on sources including US documents\, interviews of refugee survivors\, and a magazine published by the defectors themselves\, Moon explores the motives and trajectories of northern refugees from their crossing of the 38th parallel to their political activism after their settlement in South Korea. The northern defectors called their movement anti-colonial for the “independence of their hometown\,” rather than considering it “counter-revolutionary.” The movements of northern refugees were critical to reshaping nationalism in Korea into its Cold War variants.\n\nYumi Moon is Associate Professor in the department of history at Stanford University. Moon received her BA and MA in Political Science and International Relations from Seoul National University and finished her PhD in History and East Asian Languages at Harvard University. Her first book *Populist Collaborators: The Ilchinhoe and the Japanese Colonialization of Korea\, 1896-1910* (Cornell University Press\, 2013) studied the last phase of the Korean reformist movements and the Japanese colonization of Korea. She is currently leading a collective research project\, *Searching for ‘Postwar’ Asia*\, sponsored by the Academy of Korean Studies\, South Korea. The project challenges the term “Postwar\,” which originated from the Eurocentric perspective and is irrelevant to defining Asia’s post-1945 trajectory. The contributors of this project look for an alternative framework to explaining the entanglements of war and violence with peace and democracy in various regions of Asia. As a part of this project\, she is editing a volume on Cold War Refugees in Asia. This book explores the five cases of Taiwan\, Vietnam\, Korea\, Afghanistan\, and Pakistan where large groups of refugees forcibly or voluntarily left their hometowns as a result of ongoing revolutions or war under the bipolar conflicts between the US and the USSR. She is also writing her second book\, tentatively entitled *Toward a Free State: Imperial Shift and the Making of Post-Colonial South Korea\, 1937-1950*. This book investigates Korea’s transition from the wartime colonial period to the US occupation. She published a result of her most recent research as a book chapter “Imperial Shift: Rice and Revolution in Trans-war Korea\, 1939-1949” included in *Transwar Asia: Ideology\, Practices\, and Institutions\, 1920-1960* (Bloomsbury\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Vegetation Pattern Formation in Drylands
DESCRIPTION:A beautiful example of spontaneous pattern formation occurs in certain dryland environments around the globe\, where stripes of vegetation alternate with stripes of bare soil\, with striking regularity and on a scale readily monitored by remote-sensing satellites. Theoretical ecologists\, together with theoretical physicists and applied mathematicians\, have also exploited the physicist's understanding of mechanisms of spontaneous self-organization to model these dryland vegetation patterns. They have shown how these spatial patterns exploit positive feedbacks to efficiently concentrate the limited water resource into vegetated zones. This talk will present a few research vignettes on this topic of vegetation pattern formation in dryland ecosystems. It is research that is motivated by the vulnerability of these fragile ecosystems to increased desertification under climate change and changes in human land-use.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Propagation of chaos for maxima of particle systems with mean-field drift interaction and applications in finance.
DESCRIPTION:We study the asymptotic behavior of the normalized maxima of real-valued diffusive particles with mean-field drift interaction. Our main result establishes propagation of chaos: in the large population limit\, the normalized maxima behave as those arising in an i.i.d system where each particle follows the associated McKean—Vlasov limiting dynamics. This allows for the asymptotic distribution of the normalized maxima to be determined by using results from standard Extreme—Value Theory. The proof uses a change of measure argument that depends on a delicate combinatorial analysis of the iterated stochastic integrals appearing in the chaos expansion of the Radon-Nikodym density. Our work is motivated by problems arising in stochastic portfolio theory\, credit risk and mean-field games. Possible extensions to more complex settings are also discussed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Annual Martin Luther King\, Jr. Lecture. Racial Injustice: Global Challenges and Opportunities for the Prevention of Genocide.
DESCRIPTION:Commentator: Ambassador (ret.) Susan D. Page\, Professor of Practice in International Diplomacy\, Weiser Diplomacy Center\; Professor from Practice\, University of Michigan Law School.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required if you intend to participate virtually. Once you’ve registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n\nRegister at: https://myumi.ch/pZXP5\n\n*We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality\, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly\, affects all indirectly*. Martin Luther King\n \n We think of global history in the way it’s often taught- as a series of wars. Trojan War. Wars of Independence. First World War. Second World War. Historians often glorify wars and people who determine history are more often than not those who have fought physical battles in wars. If we changed the way the history of wars is written and rather than have the usual cast of heroines\, heroes\, rogues and villains show the misery\, destruction\, desolation\, loneliness\, fear\, desperation utter ruin\, devastation and despair of war what would the history of war against racism look like?\n \n Would the history of war against racism look like an absence of political will\, or a ticking of boxes\; injustice\, systemic bias in the criminal justice system\, income and employment discrimination\, absences of a people’s contributions in curriculums\, unequal treatment in healthcare\, denied opportunities for names not considered right?\n \n Would it be about descriptions of those not like us and those like us\, dominant and non-dominant groups? Could we bring to life the terror of this war against racism\, in textbooks globally\, including in homogeneous societies\, of broken minds and bodies\, the everyday fear of parents and give new meaning into what fuels feelings towards the “other” as seeing difference as a danger?\n \n Would there be a winner\, as expected of wars\, and what would winning mean? Could this history give global implementable lessons on how young people could stop holding racist views based on pasts those who came before them lived and fatalistic thoughts about a future they are yet to see? Could a description of anti-racism work as a historical fact of war constitute knowledge on determining human attitudes and behavior as the most fundamental of struggles over the past and present\, breaking down the mentality at the heart of the culture of racism and therefore becoming our global \"inescapable network of mutuality\, tied in a single garment of destiny?\n \n Alice Wairimu Nderitu of Kenya is Under Secretary General and the Special Adviser to the Secretary General on the Prevention of Genocide. Ms. Nderitu is a recognized voice in the field of peacebuilding and violence prevention\, having led as mediator of armed conflicts and in reconciliation processes. She was one of the first African women to sign peace agreements as a mediator\, actively contributing in defining the role of women as mediators of armed conflict. She served as Commissioner of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission in Kenya\, as well as Founding Member and co-Chair of the Uwiano Platform for Peace\, that pioneered the use of mobile technology and conflict analysis to encourage citizens to report indicators of violence\, linking early warning to early response. She was previously the Director of Education for Social Justice at Fahamu a UK-registered charity in Oxford head of the human rights education department of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and a founder of Community Voices for Peace and Pluralism\, a network of African women professionals preventing\, transforming and solving violent\, ethnic\, racial and religious conflicts worldwide.\n \n She served as summer faculty at the School for International Training (SIT) Graduate School\, Vermont\, Brattleboro\, and taught the socio-economic rights course at Pretoria University’s Centre for Human Rights\, South Africa and the online course on Early Warning for the Auschwitz Institute of Peace and Reconciliation. She is an Aspen Leadership scholarship recipient and aTransitional Justice Fellow\, Institute for Justice and Reconciliation\, South Africa. She is the recipient of several awards recognizing her commitment to peaceful conflict transformation globally\, especially commending her innovative approach to mediation of armed conflict. The awards include the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Woman Peace Maker of the Year\, Global Pluralism Awardee from HH the Aga Khan and the Government of Canada and the Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue Jack P. Blaney Awardee for Dialogue.\n \n Widely published\, she is the author of among other books\, The Companion for Women Mediating Armed Conflict in Communities and Beyond Ethnicism: Exploring Ethnic and Racial Diversity for Educators\, book chapters and the Seminal Paper Getting to the Point of Inclusion: Seven Myths Standing in the Way of Women Waging Peace co-written with Jacqueline O’Neill.\n \n Ms. Nderitu holds an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Keene State College and a Masters Degree in Armed Conflict and Peace Studies and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Literature and Philosophy both from the University of Nairobi.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at umichhumanrights@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spectral Martingale Measures
DESCRIPTION:We show that given a class of comonotonic claims there is a probability measure Q such that the dynamic spectral risk measure of each such claim is a martingale under Q. The applications explored of this result are: (1) the use of statistical and calibration techniques that are typically employed under the law of one price\, such as digital moment estimation and fast Fourier transform\; (2) a simplified numerical scheme for the nonlinear valuation of financial claims and of portfolio selection that minimizes the worst case scenario value\; (3) the definition of a dynamic\, time-consistent\, convex\, but not coherent spectral risk measure\, which allows the introduction of diminishing marginal returns without the theoretical limitations of expected utility theory

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Science Café *cancelled*
DESCRIPTION:Climate Solutions: Renewable Energy Storage and Carbon Capture\nJanuary 25\, 2023 - *Tonight's Science Café has been cancelled due to inclement weather and has been rescheduled for March 22.*\n5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.\nConor O'Neill's Traditional Irish Pub\, 318 South Main Street\, Ann Arbor\n\nHow can renewables such as wind and solar energy produce power for use when the sun isn't shining or the wind ebbs? How can we capture the carbon dioxide that is already in the atmosphere? Join Charles McCrory of the U-M Department of Chemistry and David Kwabi of the U-M Department of Mechanical Engineering to discuss new research on renewable energy storage: using renewable electricity to charge batteries and produce chemical fuels like hydrogen that can be used for later energy generation. We'll also discuss how renewable energy may be used to mitigate climate change by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide\, or converting it into useful products.\n\nScience Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current research topics with experts in an informal setting.\n\nComplimentary hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.\nThe program begins at 6:00 p.m.\nSeating is limited—come early.\n\nUMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15 years of support for our Science Cafés. Their continued commitment brings U-M faculty into the Ann Arbor community to discuss current research topics.\n\nMade possible with help from the National Science Foundation.\n\nSponsored by\nSIGMA XI\nTHE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH HONOR SOCIETY\nUniversity of Michigan Chapter

SUMMARY:Performance:The Plastic Bag Store
DESCRIPTION:This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor\, craft\, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically\, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.\n\nShelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand\, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day\, the store transforms into an immersive\, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry\, shadow play\, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.
