SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Automated Research Workflows
DESCRIPTION:Significant advancements in scientific computing\, Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, and the hardware and software research environment are enabling researchers to develop automated research workflows (ARWs): building AI and machine learning (ML) as components in the research workflow for data processing and analytics\, and using these methods to design and monitor experiments. As stated in a recent report from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine\, “the tools and techniques being developed under the large umbrella of ARWs promise to transform the centuries-old serial method of research investigation into processes in which thousands or even millions of simulations or experiments are iterated rapidly in closed loops\, with the analysis of data and even the design of experiments or controlled observations being assisted by ML or optimization techniques. Simultaneously\, ARWs provide a way to satisfy pressing demands across fields to increase interoperability\, reproducibility\, replicability\, and trustworthiness by better tracking results\, recording data\, establishing provenance\, and creating more consistent metadata than even the most dedicated researchers can provide themselves.”\n\nThis colloquium gathers experts who are leading this trend nationwide. They will present their vision as well as their work developing and employing ARWs in astronomy\, chemical biology and environmental science. In addition\, we will organize a roundtable session with U-M faculty members and the speakers\, to discuss the potential of ARWs in various research domains\, develop significant ideas and build collaboration to pursue these ideas.\n\nAll are welcome to attend the featured presentations. Faculty members who are interested in developing automated workflows for your research are strongly encouraged to also attend the research roundtable. Sign-up is strongly encouraged for both activities.\n\nScheduled talks and invited speakers:\n\n\"Dynamic Capability Composition at the Digital Continuum from Edge to HPC\" - Ilkay Altintas\, Chief Data Science Officer\, San Diego Supercomputer Center\; Founding Fellow\, Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute\, University of California San Diego. \n\nShe is the Founding Director of the Workflows for Data Science (WorDS) Center of Excellence\, which develops methods\, cyberinfrastructure\, and workflows for computational data science and its translation to practical applications. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE Community Dialog Series
DESCRIPTION:Relationships is the most important word in the English lexicon. In the midst of code switching\, imposter syndrome\, and rampant sexism in colleges of engineering how can authentic relationships between historically excluded students\, faculty\, and staff be built? During this discussion we will consider best practices that we all must engage in since we are all responsible for building community.\n\nThe IOE Community Dialog Series is a series of facilitated discussions between members of the IOE community that surround a speaker and topic. The intent is to hear and engage with diverse viewpoints\, ideas\, and experiences to understand differing perspectives or challenges some of our colleagues or students face while acknowledging the explicit and hidden structures that influence our community\; especially as it pertains to the work we do.\n\nBiography\n\nDamon P. Williams serves as the inaugural associate dean for inclusive excellence and chief diversity officer\, advancing the College’s diversity and inclusion initiatives and supporting a climate of equity and belonging across our community. Williams is a member of the academic faculty in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE)\, where he is a senior lecturer and director of ISyE’s Center for Academics\, Success\, and Equity\, which he founded in 2020. He also speaks nationally on higher education and diversity in academia.\n\nWilliams earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2002 and then a master’s and Ph.D. in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. He returned to Georgia Tech as a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Teaching and Learning and a part-time lecturer in ISyE in 2010. He turned his attention to teaching and advising full-time in 2014.\n\nWilliams also earned a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur\, Georgia\, and serves as senior pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church in southwest Atlanta.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Virtual Wagner Lecture: Harnessing the power of big data and artificial intelligence to understand and protect biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nIn this talk I will summarise collaborative efforts from my research group to unveil the patterns and processes underlying the outstanding biodiversity found today in the world’s tropical regions\, with a focus on the American tropics and additional examples from Africa and Madagascar. By comparing the current distribution and evolutionary history of multiple organism groups\, we have been able to identify common effects of historical events (such as mountain uplift\, climate change and river shifts) on biodiversity. To our aid we use molecular and spatial information from field collected specimens and natural history collections\, develop new computational tools and review fossil evidence. I will then discuss how the information we are gaining from the past may help predict the future and identify priorities for conservation in a time of escalating biodiversity loss due to the expansion of agriculture\, climate change\, invasive species and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Mechanics of the Vagina: Deformations\, Tears\, and Contractions
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe vagina is a complex fibromuscular organ with walls that are usually collapsed against each other. The same walls can\, however\, stretch a great deal during important physiological functions such as conception\, pregnancy\, and delivery. The remarkable deformations of this organ have not been characterized\, despite their impact on women’s health. In this talk\, I will offer an overview of the research being conducted in my lab to quantify the unique mechanics and complex microstructure of the vagina by combining advanced experimental\, theoretical\, and computational methods. The vaginal tissue in the rat model was found to experience very large and highly inhomogeneous deformations in both the active (relaxed) and passive (contracted) states. Over time\, the vaginal walls deform very quickly when the loads are first applied and more slowly as the same loads are sustained\, revealing their inherent viscoelasticity. Even in the presence of tears\, the vagina can undergo large deformations with collagen fibers re-orienting to slow the propagation of tears. Higher contractions occur in the proximal (closer to the cervix) region than in the distal (closer to the introitus) region due to the smooth muscle fiber organization. Data-driven reduced-order modeling techniques are being used to construct in silico models of vaginal deformations\, with the accuracy of higher-fidelity models and the speed of simplified models. Future research will explore how mechanical and microstructural properties of the vagina are altered in pathological conditions such as sexual dysfunction\, maternal trauma\, and pelvic organ prolapse.\n\nBio:\nRaffaella De Vita is a professor and associate department head in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech. She received her Laurea in Mathematics from La Seconda Università degli Study di Napoli\, Italy\, in 2000 and her M.S. and Ph.D. from University of Pittsburgh in 2003 and 2005\, respectively. She is the recipient of the American Society of Biomechanics President’s award\, the NSF CAREER award\, the PECASE Award\, and several awards for research\, teaching\, and outreach excellence at Virginia Tech. She is a fellow of the ASME and AIMBE. She has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Elasticity since 2020 and as an associate editor for the Journal of Biomedical Engineering from 2017 to 2022. SUMMARY:Presentation:MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Alex Hrabski
DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Investigations of Wave Turbulence in Bounded Domains*\n\nNonlinear wave systems are ubiquitous in nature\, and when many incoherent dispersive waves interact\, there is the potential for wave turbulence. Just as in hydrodynamic turbulence (HDT)\, systems in wave turbulence exhibit inter-scale energy cascades\, power-law inertial-range spectra\, and even intermittency. Unlike in HDT\, however\, a natural analytical closure for field statistics has been developed: spectral evolution in wave turbulence can be expressed as a Boltzmann-like kinetic equation. In this talk\, we will numerically probe the interplay of nonlinear strength and domain size (critical quantities to the analytical closure) in determining the behaviors of wave turbulence in a model system. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that (a) domain aspect ratio plays a key role in spectral evolution when nonlinearity is weak\, (b) that near-resonant interactions are important for the observation of kinetic behavior\, and (c) evaluations of the energy cascade can be used to investigate the wave turbulence closure.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spring Lectures in Algebraic Geometry: Hodge theory\, between algebraicity and transcendence II
DESCRIPTION:Hodge theory\, as developed by Deligne and Griffiths\, is one of the main tools for analysing the geometry and arithmetic of complex algebraic varieties\, that is\, solution sets of algebraic equations over the complex numbers. It associates to any complex algebraic variety an apparently simple linear algebra gadget: a finite dimensional vector space over the rationals\, whose complexification is naturally endowed with two filtrations. Hodge theory occupies a central position in mathematics through its relations to differential geometry\, algebraic geometry\, differential equations and number theory.\n\nIt is an essential fact that at heart\, Hodge theory is not algebraic but rather the transcendental comparison of two algebraic structures. On the other hand\, some of the deepest conjectures in mathematics (the Hodge conjecture and the Grothendieck period conjecture) suggest that this transcendence is severely constrained. In these lectures\, we survey the recent advances bounding this transcendence\, mainly due to the introduction of tame geometry as a natural framework for Hodge theory.

SUMMARY:Other:Well-Defined Nanocrystal Surfaces and Interfaces for Electrocatalysis
DESCRIPTION:Crucial to sustainable energy future is the ability to manipulate important chemical reactions for the production and conversion of clean hydrogen (H2) fuel and renewable carbon-based chemicals through the development of advanced catalysts. Well-defined nanocrystals with atomically precise surfaces and interfaces allow us to bridge the knowledge gap between conventional single-crystal bulk materials and powder catalysts to achieve a new and in-depth understanding of structure-catalytic property relationships. In this talk\, I will highlight how nanocrystal catalyst surfaces and interfaces can be synthetically tuned with atomic precision for the improved performance in the oxygen-mediated energy conversion reactions: the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cells and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolyzer. The first nanocrystal system I will discuss is the M-Pt (M=non-precious metals) core-shell nanocrystals within which desirable/undesirable interfaces between non-precious metal M core and precious metal Pt shell were identified by theoretical calculations and were experimentally balanced through wet-chemical synthesis. The optimized core-shell nanocrystals exhibited favorable interfacial interaction through properly coupled electronic and strain effects\, leading to an enhanced electrocatalytic efficiency towards the ORR. In the second system\, we elucidated and modulated the interaction of single-site Co\, Fe\, Ni catalytic centers and inorganic coordination environments in the surface of doped metal oxide nanocrystals for the OER. The seamless integration of controlled synthesis of nanocrystals\, operando structural/catalytic characterization\, and advanced theoretical calculation for oxygen electrocatalyst development will be discussed\, which will also be extended to other electrocatalytic (e.g.\, CO2 reduction and biomass-derived molecule upgrading) and thermocatalytic processes (e.g.\, CO2 hydrogenation). \n \n \n \n \n \n \nSen Zhang (University of Virginia)

SUMMARY:Presentation:MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Gurmeet Singh
DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Understanding thermomechanical behavior of vitrimers using molecular dynamics simulations*\n\nVitrimers are a special class of polymers that undergo dynamic cross-linking under thermal stimuli. Their ability to exchange covalent bonds can be harnessed to mitigate damage in a composite or to achieve recyclable composites. This work addresses the primary challenge of modeling dynamic cross-linking reactions in vitrimers during thermomechanical loading. Dynamic bond exchange reaction probability change during heating and its effect on dilatometric and mechanical response are simulated in large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Healing of damage under thermal cycling is computed with mechanical properties predicted before and after self–healing.\n\nSubsequently\, the model is used to simulate the creep response of the vitrimer. The results show that the vitrimers demonstrate a secondary creep response on contrary to pure epoxy. The MD simulations are able to probe the interplay between chemical reactions and the loading that results in the healing of the vitrimer under creep. The important feature that explains the difference between epoxies and vitrimers is the orientation of the crosslink bonds with respect to the loading direction. Furthermore\, it is found that the free volume that arises from tensile loads is reduced in vitrimers through dynamic bond rearrangement. The bond orientation\, however\, is preferentially chosen to be normal to the loading axis which ends up decreasing the stiffness along the loading axis\, leading to higher strain as compared to epoxies. Over longer timescales\, the increased strain leads to faster damage localization in tertiary creep where the largest void grows to a critical volume beyond which healing is no longer possible. Thus\, chemistry changes or additives that can prevent the initial realignment of dynamic bonds can be an effective strategy to mitigate creep in vitrimers.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Naomi Fukuda\, Backseat Player for Japanese Studies
DESCRIPTION:Please register for this Zoom seminar at http://myumi.ch/Nm35W\n\nWhen the U-M Center for Japanese Studies was established\, Naomi Fukuda\, a pre-war student at University of Michigan\, was not able to become the first Japanese studies librarian in an ironic twist of fate. In 1970\, however\, she finally got the position thanks to her extensive experience and rich expertise. This talk will go over parts of her life and career trajectory in both Japan and the United States.\n \n Izumi Koide obtained a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. In that same year\, she started working for the International House of Japan as the librarian and in 2001 became Program Director. In 2003\, she moved to the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation and worked as Director of the Resource Center for the History of Entrepreneurship until her retirement in 2015. She earned her M.A. in 2008\, her Ph.D. in 2020 from the University of Tokyo\, and published her dissertation\, *Nichibei Koryu-shi no Naka no Fukuda Naomi: “Gaikoku Kenkyu” to Raiburarian* (*Naomi Fukuda and the History of Japan-U.S. Exchange: “Foreign Area Studies” and the Librarian*)\, via Bensei Shuppan in 2022. Her major interest is in information accessibility and availability of resources in international studies.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Movie Night: \"An Uncommon Education\" Revisited
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean that U-M's first president\, Henry Philip Tappan\, wanted to turn Michigan into a \"true university\"?  How has student activism remade Michigan over the decades?  How did one of the nation's most prestigious student literary awards come to U-M?  What does it mean to be a leader and best -- on the playing field or in the laboratory?  And\, how should you depict U-M's history?  For its 2017 bicentennial\, the University of Michigan collaborated with Detroit Public Television to produce ten mini-documentaries covering questions such as these from U-M's history.  What do those videos look like six years later\, given so many changes in the University and the world? For this movie night\, we will screen several videos from the series\, and our panel will discuss those videos and the series as a whole.  The panel will consist of Fran Blouin and Kim Clarke\, who both appeared in many of the videos\, and Gary Krenz\, who directed the University's bicentennial.\n\nAs with all public events at the Observatory\, this movie night will include tours of the building by our student docents\, with observing if weather permits.

SUMMARY:Performance:Neal Francis with Danielle Ponder
DESCRIPTION:On his new album\, “In Plain Sight\,” Neal Francis offers up a body of work both strangely enchanted and painfully self-aware\, unfolding in songs sparked from Greek myths and frenzied dreams and late-night drives in the depths of summer delirium. True to its charmed complexity\, the singer/songwriter/pianist’s second full-length came to life over the course of a tumultuous year spent living in a possibly haunted church in Chicago. The result: a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience\, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that’s endlessly absorbing. \n\nBravery can take many forms. For Danielle Ponder it took the shape of a leap of faith: leaving her successful day job working in the public defender’s office in her hometown of Rochester (New York) to devote herself full-time to sharing her powerful voice with the world. The singer-songwriter’s mesmerizing eight-song debut\, “Some of Us Are Brave\,” reinforces that her faith was not misplaced\, and her leap has been rewarded with a safe landing. Written and recorded over three years\, the album is a refreshingly original\, shiver-inducing mix of pop\, R&B\, blues\, rock\, and moody trip-hop topped by Danielle’s celestial voice— an instrument that can plumb melancholy depths with a heartsick murmur and scrape the sky with hurricane force wails.
