SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Automated Research Workflows
DESCRIPTION:Significant advancements in scientific computing\, Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, and the hardware and software research environment are enabling researchers to develop automated research workflows (ARWs): building AI and machine learning (ML) as components in the research workflow for data processing and analytics\, and using these methods to design and monitor experiments. As stated in a recent report from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine\, “the tools and techniques being developed under the large umbrella of ARWs promise to transform the centuries-old serial method of research investigation into processes in which thousands or even millions of simulations or experiments are iterated rapidly in closed loops\, with the analysis of data and even the design of experiments or controlled observations being assisted by ML or optimization techniques. Simultaneously\, ARWs provide a way to satisfy pressing demands across fields to increase interoperability\, reproducibility\, replicability\, and trustworthiness by better tracking results\, recording data\, establishing provenance\, and creating more consistent metadata than even the most dedicated researchers can provide themselves.”\n\nThis colloquium gathers experts who are leading this trend nationwide. They will present their vision as well as their work developing and employing ARWs in astronomy\, chemical biology and environmental science. In addition\, we will organize a roundtable session with U-M faculty members and the speakers\, to discuss the potential of ARWs in various research domains\, develop significant ideas and build collaboration to pursue these ideas.\n\nAll are welcome to attend the featured presentations. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Optimality conditions in optimization under uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:Most optimization problems involve uncertain data due to measurement errors\, unknown future developments and modeling approximations. Stochastic optimization assumes that the uncertain parameter is probabilistic. An other approach is called robust optimization which expects the uncertain parameter to belong to a set that is known prior. In this talk\, we consider scalar optimization problems under uncertainty with infinite scenario sets. We apply methods from vector optimization in general spaces\, set-valued optimization and scalarization techniques to derive necessary optimality conditions for solutions of robust optimization problems.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:PRINTWORKS
DESCRIPTION:Carl Wilson is known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the nineteen forties and fifties has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\n\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like JuicyFruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. In 2017 Carl's work was a part of Detroit's contribution to The Saint-Etienne Design Biennale in France. 2017 also saw the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead & Lost in Detroit. Spring of 2018 saw Carl complete a residency at MacDowell in New Hampshire. While there he finished the writing and illustration of his graphic novel and currently the book is in negotiation for publication. The year has also seen the completion of a ten print collection based on James Weldon Johnson's Prodigal Son poetry. It was commissioned by Calvin College and Dr. Larry Gerbens.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Zhimei Ren\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Department of Statistics\, University of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: A common problem in many modern statistical applications is to find a set of important variables—from a pool of many candidates—that explain the response of interest. For this task\, model-X knockoffs offers a general framework that can leverage any feature importance measure to produce a variable selection algorithm: it discovers true effects while rigorously controlling the number or fraction of false positives\, paving the way for reproducible scientific discoveries. The model-X knockoffs\, however\, is a randomized procedure that relies on the one-time construction of synthetic (random) variables. Different runs of model-X knockoffs on the same dataset often result in different sets of selected variables\, which is not desirable for the reproducibility of the reported results. \n\nIn this talk\, I will introduce derandomization schemes that aggregate the selection results across multiple runs of the knockoffs algorithm to yield stable selection. In the first part\, I will present a derandomization scheme that controls the number of false positives\, i.e.\, the per family error rate (PFER) and the k family-wise error rate (k-FWER). In the second part\, I will talk about an alternative derandomization scheme with provable false discovery rate (FDR) control. Equipped with these derandomization steps\, the knockoffs framework provides a powerful tool for making reproducible scientific discoveries. The proposed methods are evaluated on both simulated and real data\, demonstrating comparable power and dramatically lower selection variability when compared with the original model-X knockoffs.\nhttps://zhimeir.github.io/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Heterogeneous structure (and order) of disordered FUS condensation
DESCRIPTION:Formation of membraneless liquid-like biomolecular condensates (BCs) via liquid-liquid phase separation of disordered proteins is responsible for many behaviors in cells\, specifically stress granule formation\, chromatin organization\, and RNA transcription. Structural changes of these BCs can be triggered by external stimuli such as pH\, salt\, or temperature as well as surface interactions. Often external stimuli can facilitate aberrant phase transitions or non-native multivalent interactions of these disordered proteins\, which eventually leads to solidification. Here\, I describe our studies of the structural and biophysical properties of FUS condensation after thermal shock\, at hydrophobic interfaces\, and at lipid interfaces using a combination of cutting-edge molecular microscopy and spectroscopy to reveal the diverse molecular states that FUS inhabits. In contrast to the disordered state observed in conventional liquid BCs\, FUS under these different conditions forms condensates with heterogeneous structure and surprising ordering. Moreover\, we find that interfaces can catalyze FUS assembly at concentrations less than 50-fold required in bulk.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Race in College Admissions and Disrupting Bias
DESCRIPTION:What happens to our campus community this summer if the Supreme Court\, in two cases against Harvard & UNC\, bans the consideration of race in college admissions? How will the race based biases that we inherently carry impact our ability to build intercultural competence if the community has no diversity to challenge those biases? In this discussion on disrupting bias we will consider its impact on the quality of education large universities are able to provide.\n\nBiography\nDamon P. Williams serves as the inaugural associate dean for inclusive excellence and chief diversity officer\, advancing the College’s diversity and inclusion initiatives and supporting a climate of equity and belonging across our community. Williams is a member of the academic faculty in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE)\, where he is a senior lecturer and director of ISyE’s Center for Academics\, Success\, and Equity\, which he founded in 2020. He also speaks nationally on higher education and diversity in academia.\n\nWilliams earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2002 and then a master’s and Ph.D. in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. He returned to Georgia Tech as a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Teaching and Learning and a part-time lecturer in ISyE in 2010. He turned his attention to teaching and advising full-time in 2014.\n\nWilliams also earned a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur\, Georgia\, and serves as senior pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church in southwest Atlanta.\n\nFor questions or contact information click here

SUMMARY:Film Screening:WCEE Film and Discussion. *Kalinindorf*
DESCRIPTION:*Kalinindorf\,* Yurii Kaparulin and Les Kasyanov\, directors (29 min\, 2020). Following the film screening\, Kaparulin will lead the discussion.\n\nThe documentary film tells the story of Kalynivske\, a village in the Kherson region. Between 1927 and 1944\, the village–then known as Kalinindorf–was the center of the first Jewish oblast in Ukraine. Through their encounters with the inhabitants of Kalynivske and of several other former Jewish settlements\, the film directors explore the common history of Ukrainian and Jews\, complex Ukrainian-Jewish relations\, and the Holocaust\, and investigate how that layered history is remembered today. The story of Kalynivske and Jewish settlements in the region takes on new meaning following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th\, 2022\, as the region was occupied by Russian troops and then annexed to the Russian Federation. After their liberation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on November 9\, 2022\, war crimes committed by the Russian army are being discovered and investigated\, providing the occasion to revisit the history of violence in the region.\n\nLes Kasyanov is a photographer and filmmaker who has been working with the French historical organization Yahad—In Unum since 2011 collecting evidence of the Holocaust. Les was responsible for principal photography\, sound\, and editing.\n\nYurii Kaparulin\, associate professor and director of the Raphael Lemkin Center for Genocide Studies at Kherson State University\, is a legal scholar and Scholars at Risk Fellow at the University of Michigan Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia. He has been researching the history of Jewish agricultural settlements in southern Ukraine for the past five years. Prof. Kaparulin researched and produced the film.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Questionable Embrace of the “Sexual Harassment Training is Not Effective” Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Although training alone is unlikely to prevent or correct workplace sexual harassment\, research provides substantial evidence that training can be effective in achieving a number of specific outcomes that are both important to sexual harassment prevention and have legal relevance. Despite this growing body of research\, the broad claim that there is little or no evidence that sexual harassment training is effective persists among many legal scholars and some social science researchers. This broad claim is part of a long-standing\, institutional theory-based narrative that most employers are merely interested in symbolic compliance with sexual harassment law\, and symbolic compliance is sufficient to provide employers effective protection against negative legal outcomes. This presentation will draw on social science research\, an analysis of current U.S. sexual harassment law\, and the content analysis of recent consent judgments mandating defendant-employers provide sexual harassment training\, to rebut the above-described narrative. A conceptual model of the paths by which training can be expected to promote procedural fairness and significantly impact law-related outcomes (e.g.\, legal claiming\, litigation success/failure) by positively affecting trainees’ sexually harassment-related knowledge\, skills\, and behaviors will be proposed. I conclude that: 1) merely symbolic compliance provides employers relatively little protection from negative law-related outcomes\, and 2) there is still a need for U.S. sexual harassment law to be more fully informed by social science theory and research. Specific suggestions for aligning the legal standard for what constitutes “reasonable care” to prevent or correct sexual harassment with available evidence- based knowledge will be proposed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Log Geometry
DESCRIPTION:A lovely feature of algebraic varieties is that they admit compactifications. Even better\, it often happens that the geometry of a compactification is influenced\, or even determined\, by combinatorial data\, as occurs in the correspondence between toric varieties (certain compactifications of tori) and fans (combinatorial data). Log geometry is a powerful formalism for keeping track of combinatorial data at the boundary of a compactification\, and since its introduction in the 1980's\, it has played an important role in a wide range of topics from p-adic Hodge theory to the birational geometry of moduli spaces. The goal of the talk is to give a brief introduction to the basic language of log geometry\, with no previous exposure to toric geometry assumed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Catherine Macris\, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
DESCRIPTION:Impact processes are responsible for building and shaping planets and play an important role in the evolution of the chemical and isotopic compositions of Earth and other rocky bodies in the Solar System. This talk presents new insights into impacts processes from ultra-high temperature experiments in an aerodynamic levitation laser furnace. The results of these experiments lead to a better understanding of past impacts on Earth by constraining temperature-time conditions of explosive impact plumes and addressing how impact-induced melt vaporization leads to stable isotope fractionation of impact products.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR
DESCRIPTION:The surface group representations of Euler class zero into PSL(2\,R) are those which are deformations of diagonal (reducible) representation. Marche'-Wolff showed that the mapping class group acts ergodically on these representations with the strange exception of genus 2. We explore the infinitesimal data describing a deformation from a diagonal representation to an irreducible representation\, and examine how the Torelli group acts on these deformations. Joint with James Farre.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spring Lectures in Algebraic Geometry: Hodge theory\, between algebraicity and transcendence III
DESCRIPTION:Hodge theory\, as developed by Deligne and Griffiths\, is one of the main tools for analysing the geometry and arithmetic of complex algebraic varieties\, that is\, solution sets of algebraic equations over the complex numbers. It associates to any complex algebraic variety an apparently simple linear algebra gadget: a finite dimensional vector space over the rationals\, whose complexification is naturally endowed with two filtrations. Hodge theory occupies a central position in mathematics through its relations to differential geometry\, algebraic geometry\, differential equations and number theory.\n\nIt is an essential fact that at heart\, Hodge theory is not algebraic but rather the transcendental comparison of two algebraic structures. On the other hand\, some of the deepest conjectures in mathematics (the Hodge conjecture and the Grothendieck period conjecture) suggest that this transcendence is severely constrained. In these lectures\, we survey the recent advances bounding this transcendence\, mainly due to the introduction of tame geometry as a natural framework for Hodge theory.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Plastic Bag Store
DESCRIPTION:This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor\, craft\, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically\, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.\n\nShelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand\, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day\, the store transforms into an immersive\, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry\, shadow play\, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.

SUMMARY:Performance:INTO THE LABYRINTH
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 27\n8:00 PM\nKeene Theater\, East Quad\n701 E. University Ave.\nFree and open to the public\n\nAn interdisciplinary musical performance that highlights the turning points in the history of physics. The show combines fragments (excerpts from writings by some of the most prominent physicists in history) woven with Elfriede Jelinek’s writing which is read and interpreted by a narrator with original songs based on each fragment. The project explores the intersection between the arts and the sciences\, and postulates the thesis that art and science are not antagonistic alternatives in the search for truth\; rather\, there is a broad territory of coexistence.\n\nThe main objective of the composition is to inspire an audience to become more engaged in arts and science by exploring the deep epistemological connection between art and science and at the same time using art as a facilitating vehicle for the teaching and communication of science.\n\nThe concert will begin with a short Q&A between Alberto Rojo\, Michael Gould and Nicholas Balla followed by the premiere of the piece. The performance is located at the Keene Theater in the East Quadrangle on the University of Michigan central campus-701 East University Avenue. For more information contact Michael Gould (gould@umich.edu).\n\nAlberto Rojo has written four books\, numerous essays and popular science pieces (in Spanish)\, and lectures around the world on the connection between art and science. His latest book\, The Principle of Least Action\, History and Physics\, written in collaboration with Anthony Bloch\, was published in March 2018 by Cambridge University Press. As a musician\, he released three solo albums and has collaborated with Latin American artists\, notably Mercedes Sosa\, with whom he toured extensively. He wrote and performed one of the songs of her Album Corazón Libre\, recipient of the 2005 Latin Grammy Award for best folkloric album.\n\nMichael Gould has received international recognition as a performer and scholar in the field of drumset\, contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy. He has performed and given clinics all over the world. Michael has released over 100 educational percussion videos through playalongmusic.com. He has also composed and performed music for a wide range of ensembles and venues from the Münich Opera and Ballet to National Public Radio.\n \nHe has had unique collaborations with engineers\, material scientists\, painters\, poets\, dancers\, athletes and business professionals. His book for the iPad-- The Drum Diaries is available worldwide through the Apple iTunes store. He is also the music director for Tangente Dance Company in Berlin\, Germany. His piece Remember Me was recently performed at the Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin\, Germany and includes dance\, theater\, percussion\, electronics\, and original artwork. He is currently Director of the Center for World Performance Studies at the University of Michigan.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact Center for World Performance Studies\, at 734-936-2777\, at least one week in advance of this event.
