SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Faculty Symposium on Anti-Racism Research and Scholarship at U-M
DESCRIPTION:The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR)\, the Anti-Racism Collaborative at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (ARC/NCID)\, and the Office of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) invite faculty and postdoctoral fellows to a two-day\, in-person symposium exploring anti-racism research and scholarship at the University of Michigan (U-M).\n\nIn March 2021\, a campus wide focus on anti-racism research and scholarship was galvanized through the development of the Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC) at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) — as part of the provost’s anti-racism initiatives — and the launch of the two-year Anti-Racism Grants program by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) in partnership with NCID.. The complementary and shared goals between these two efforts include fostering innovative and interdisciplinary research that promotes racial justice and racial equity\, supporting a community of anti-racism scholars\, and amplifying the anti-racism research expertise among U-M faculty and researchers.\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND THE FACULTY SYMPOSIUM?\nThe Faculty Symposium on Anti-Racism Research & Scholarship at U-M is a convening of faculty and postdoctoral fellows who seek to challenge systemic racism through their research and scholarship\, want to be in community with faculty addressing systemic racism from intersectional perspectives or other disciplinary fields of study\, and/or want to engage in dialogue around institutional supports for faculty who engage in anti-racism research and scholarship.\n\nFor more information\, visit the event webpage or contact anti-racism-symposium@umich.edu.

Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session. Today: \"Monumental Revisions\,\" with Anca Trandafirescu.\n\nAcross the world monuments are being torn down and dragged away as if they never existed. But what is lost when we no longer have to face who we once were? Considering ways to radically expand and complicate our monuments’ vocabularies through physical revision\, this talk will present proposed design corrections to the Washington Monument. The talk will include a brief historical trace of the monument itself and drawings-in-progress of its imagined alterations.\n\nAbout Anca Trandafirescu:\nAnca Trandafirescuis a 2022-23 Steelcase Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and associate professor\, architecture.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Double Feature
DESCRIPTION:Yang Yu \nU-M Physics\n\nMagnetic Phases of the Anisotropic Triangular Lattice Hubbard Model\n\nThe Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice in two dimensions\, a fundamental model for frustrated electron physics\, displays a wide variety of phases and phase transitions. This work investigates the model using the ladder dual fermion approximation which captures local correlations non-perturbatively but approximates non-local correlations. We find metallic\, one-dimensional antiferromagnetic\, non-collinear antiferromagnetic\, square-lattice antiferromagnetic\, and spiral phases but no evidence of collinear antiferromagnetic order in different parts of the phase diagram. Analyzing the spin susceptibility in detail\, we see both regions of agreement and of discrepancy with previous work. The case of Cs2CuCl4 is discussed in detail.\n\nReference:\nhttps://arxiv.org/abs/2211.09234. \n\n\nTorben Purz \nMONSTR Sense Technologies\n\nCoherent Imaging Spectroscopy of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides\n\nTransition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers and heterostructures are a promising material platform for quantum information science\, photovoltaics\, and related device applications. In the past decade\, much effort has been dedicated to explore the exciton physics in these materials\, ranging from their strong light-matter coupling to charge transfer and coherent coupling. However\, many demonstrations in TMDs can only be realized at specific spots on the sample\, presenting a challenge to the scalability of these applications.\n\nIn this talk\, I will demonstrate Multi-Dimensional Coherent Imaging Spectroscopy of TMDs and highlight the sensitivity of exciton spatial and temporal coherence toward strain while coherent exciton coupling and charge transfer in these samples remain mostly unaffected\, strengthening the case for TMDs as next-generation material platform in quantum information science and beyond. In addition\, I will demonstrate rapid nonlinear imaging spectroscopy of TMDs that assesses the quality of samples through measurement of their nonlinear response\, exciton dephasing\, exciton lifetimes\, and exciton-coupling strength. By comparison\, I will show that extracting material parameters such as four-wave mixing intensity\, dephasing times\, excited state lifetimes\, exciton-coupling strength\, and distribution of dark/localized states allows for a more accurate assessment of the quality of a sample than current prevalent techniques\, including white light microscopy\, linear micro-reflectance spectroscopy\, and photo-luminescence.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ME Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Biophysical Transitions and Unified Dynamics of Periodically Driven (synchronous) and Self-excited (asynchronous) Flapping Flight in Insects and Robots\n\nPresented by\nSimon Sponberg\nDunn Family Associate Professor in the School of Physics\nand the School of Biological Sciences\nGeorgia Institute of Technology\n\nRoom 1200 EECS\nTuesday\, January 31\, 2023\n3:00 PM\nME Seminar Zoom link \nPasscode 309714\nAdd ME Seminar to Google Calendar\n\nAbstract\nThe ability to move is a trait of all animals. Yet how do animals\, including ourselves\, get around in this complex and uncertain world with an ease and agility we find hard to recreate in engineered systems? A particular frontier is centimeter scale locomotion\, especially flapping flight. Flapping flight is considered a key evolutionary innovation that led to one of the most explosive radiation events where insects diversified to many forms and ecologies. Underlying these behaviors are compositions of immensely complex physiological subsystems (brains\, muscles\, bodies)\, yet what often emerges through evolutionary timescales and environmental interactions is a functional performance that can (sometimes) afford simple analysis on the scale of behavior. In this talk\, I will use the agile flight of insects to show how an organismal physics approach can give insights into this emergent\, functional simplicity. I will show how insects operate as resonant mechanical systems to power flight but do not necessarily operate at their resonant frequency because of consequences for control. We will explore how insects have evolved two different strategies for powering this resonant flight system using muscles that either provide periodic oscillatory forcing or use a stretch-responsive property to set up self-excited limit cycles. While these two strategies have been known for some time\, we find that they can be unified in a single dynamic systems framework that shows how major evolutionary transitions reflect transitions in dynamics. We embody this framework in a dynamically scaled robophysical flapper\, where kinematics emerge from mechanics and actuation. We can then test the broad parameter space for flapping flight. We find that these two dynamics regimes are separated by a classic entrainment boundary but also bridged by a region of parameter space enabling smooth transitions between the two flight modes. Finally\, we realize this biophysical model in the first at-scale flapping robot that can achieve self-excited oscillations and transition between the two flight modes.\n\nBio\nSimon Sponberg is Dunn Family Associate Professor in the School of Physics and the School of Biological Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). He received his B.A. in physics and biology from Lewis &amp\; Clark College and his Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California\, Berkeley. Afterward\, Simon conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Washington before joining the faculty at Georgia Tech. He and his group (the Agile Systems Lab) has been exploring how neurons precisely orchestrate motor activity at the millisecond scale\, how the versatility of muscle arises from the physics of billions of organized tiny molecular motors\, how agile flight is powered and controlled at the centimeter scale and how flowers blow in the wind (and what that does to the pollinators around them). His interdisciplinary approach has been supported by three NSF directorates\, including a CAREER award in the physics of living systems. He now leads an Air Force Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI)\, bringing together neuroscientists and engineers from five universities to understand how the brains of organisms achieve fast\, flexible perception and decision-making in complex sensory environments. He has been the recipient of a Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Neuroethology\, a Klingenstein-Simons Fellowship in the Neurosciences\, and a Hertz Fellow.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Building the Future Webinar
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will discuss science communication efforts over the past three years by engineers and aerosol scientists in communicating to the world that SARS-CoV-2\, the virus that causes COVID-19\, is airborne. This represented a paradigm shift in the overall understanding of disease transmission from droplets and surfaces (aka “droplet dogma”) to aerosol or airborne transmission. It required a major concerted effort between engineers\, scientists\, members of the public\, and enlightened members in the medical field. \nThis presentation will discuss coordinated efforts by scientists and engineers largely through social media. Highlights will be given of all methods used to induce this change including letters to the White House\, Editorials\, publications in top journals including Science and The Lancet\, meetings with CDC officials and Dr. Fauci\, as well as testifying for OSHA and congressional hearings. Finally\, a discussion of the raised awareness and efforts now focusing on the need to clean indoor air will be discussed\, including efforts being implemented in schools\, homes\, and businesses. A summary of lessons learned from these experiences and how they will benefit research going forward will be provided.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Carl Bergstrom presents “The crisis of human collective decision-making in a social media world”
DESCRIPTION:[WEBINAR LINK BELOW]\n\nCarl Bergstrom is a frequently consulted expert on disinformation\, and is professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Washington. (Short bio below.)\n\nThis will be a live presentation in the Rackham Amphitheatre followed by a light reception. Registration to attend at the last link below. This event will be livestreamed as a webinar. Scroll to bottom for complete webinar invitation.\n\nThis talk is free and open to the public. All welcome. Register at link below.\n\nABSTRACT: We are a species of information foragers. Individually and collectively\, we have evolved to scour our natural and social environments for useful information. Over the past twenty years\, society has constructed an information pipeline\, the so-called Internet 2.0\, to satisfy and profit from our evolved desires for novel information and social connection. What happens when the scale of human communication is radically transformed in the span of a generation\, and our mechanisms for creating collective understanding are upended? What happens when this entire process is not stewarded to promote the spread of accurate information\, strengthen democracy\, and advance human well-being—but rather is to a first approximation engineered by machine learning algorithms to get people to click on advertisements?\n\nIn this talk\, I’ll look at what social media and information technology more generally are doing to society\, consider how we ended up here\, and explore some possible suggestions for what we can do about it.\n\nShort Bio\n\nCarl Bergstrom is a Professor of Biology at the University of Washington. Though trained in evolutionary biology and mathematical population genetics\, he enjoys working across disciplines and integrating ideas across the span of the natural and social sciences.\n\nThe unifying theme running throughout his work is the concept of information. Within biology\, he studies how communication evolves and how the process of evolution encodes information in genomes. In the philosophy and sociology of science\, he studies how norms and institutions influence scholars’ research strategies and\, in turn\, our scientific understanding of the world. Within informatics\, he studies how citations and other traces of scholarly activity can be used to better navigate the overwhelming volume of scholarly literature. Lately he has become concerned with the spread of disinformation on social networks\, and is interested in figuring out what we can do about it.\n\n----\n\nDr. Bergstrom has published extensively on COVID\, and misinformation (and COVID misinformation!) in the New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Scientific American and innumerable scientific journals. He was also a frequent guest on news programs especially during the early times of the pandemic.\n\nDr. Bergstrom is also an avid birder (especially corvids) of which he takes beautiful photos.\n\n---\n\nACCESSIBILITY: Please email cscs@umich.edu if you have accessibility and accommodation needs. \n\nRACKHAM BUILDING INFORMATION: \nRESTROOMS: Gender Inclusive: Floor 1 Room #1514\, Floor 3 Room #3132T & 3134T\nAccessible: Floor 0B-4 Gendered Bathrooms\nELEVATOR & STAIR ACCESS: Elevators for the upper level are found on either side of the lobby.\nLACTATION ROOM: Room 2521\, West Wing/west end of building\, 2nd floor. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium: Non-Archimedean methods in complex geometry
DESCRIPTION:Berkovich spaces are analogues of complex manifolds when the complex numbers are replaced by a non-Archimedean field\, that is\, a field satifying the strong triangle inequality.\n\nI will discuss two instances where Berkovich spaces naturally appear within complex geometry. The first concerns the Yau--Tian--Donaldson conjecture\, on the existence of Kähler--Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds. The second situation appears in the context of degenerations of Calabi--Yau manifolds\, and features conjectures by Strominger--Yau--Zaslow\, and Kontsevich--Soibelman.\n\nThis is based on joint work with R. Berman\, S. Boucksom\, J\, Hultgren\, E. Mazzon\, and N. McCleerey.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Kevin Lin\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Department of Statistics and Data Science\, Wharton School\, University of Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Recently\, multi-modal single-cell data has been growing in popularity in many areas of biomedical research and provides new opportunities to learn how different modalities coordinate within each cell. Many existing dimension reduction methods for such data estimate a low-dimensional embedding that captures all the axes of variation from either modality. While these current methods are useful\, we develop the Tilted-CCA in this talk to perform a fundamentally different task. This method is a novel matrix factorization that estimates low-dimensional embeddings separating the axes of variation shared between both modalities (i.e.\, \"common geometry\,\" capturing the coordination between both modalities) from axes of variation unique to a particular modality (i.e.\, \"distinct geometry\"). Methodologically\, Tilted-CCA achieves this by combining ideas from Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) and density clustering. Our method first uses the nearest-neighbor graphs from each modality to infer the common geometry between both modalities and decomposes the canonical scores from CCA to approximate this geometry. Biologically\, Tilted-CCA unveils the cellular dynamics in developmental systems based on the proportion of variation between the common and distinct embeddings. More broadly\, Tilted-CCA invites new theoretical questions regarding dimension reduction and can be applied to any domain beyond single-cell genomics.\n\nShort biography:\nKevin Lin is a current post-doctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Department of Statistics & Data Science with Dr. Nancy Zhang and completed his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Statistics & Data Science under Dr. Kathryn Roeder and Dr. Jing Lei. His research focuses on studying cellular mechanisms from single-cell data. He develops novel methods using ideas from matrix factorization\, network modeling\, and changepoint detection to derive new theoretical and biological insights\, and he collaborates with both statisticians and biologists.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. The Rise and Fall of Free Speech in Russia
DESCRIPTION:Freedom of speech has existed in Russia for only 30 years. During this short period\, independent media has developed considerably and has played an important role in the history of modern Russia. In 2022 however\, Russian authorities reintroduced state censorship\, while declaring hundreds of Russian independent journalists as enemies and forcing them out of the country.\n \nIn this presentation\, investigative journalist Elena Milashina will talk about the Russian media\, from its rapid development to the recent criminalization of free speech in Russia\, as well as why Russian society has not recognized freedom of speech as a fundamental social value. She will also analyze how some members of the Russian media still cover the Russian invasion of Ukraine while under threat of serious legal action\, and whether freedom of speech in Russia can survive these dark times.\n \nElena Milashina is a journalist for *Novaya Gazeta*\, Russia’s most prominent independent newspaper. She covers human rights violations in Russia’s North Caucasus Republics and brings attention to accounts of enforced disappearances\, arbitrary detentions\, extrajudicial executions\, torture\, and persecution committed by governmental agents. She also writes about women’s and LGBTQ rights in Russia. As an investigative journalist\, she has received numerous awards\, including the Human Rights Watch’s Alison Des Forges Award for Extraordinary Activism\, the International Woman of Courage Award\, and the Prize for Courage by Reporters Without Borders. She was a 2009-2010 Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/XVAkD\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Plastic Bag Store
DESCRIPTION:This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor\, craft\, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically\, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.\n\nShelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand\, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day\, the store transforms into an immersive\, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry\, shadow play\, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.
