SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:[Rackham] Shoulda\, Woulda\, Coulda: Moving Beyond Failure and Actively Cultivating a More Equitable Academy
DESCRIPTION:Systems of higher education in the U.S. create differential advantage and disadvantage for the people who work and learn in them. When individuals move through these systems—as administrators\, instructors\, or learners—they make choices to participate in the perpetuation or the disruption of these inequities. While some perpetuation of inequity can be attributed to ignorance\, it is often true that individuals who do understand the harmful impacts of unjust behavior\, processes\, and structures often fail to address them. This session centers around an embodied case study depicting one man’s meditation on a personal failure and the choices he made afterward that defined his path as an educator. Through session activities\, participants will reflect on what failures of this kind indicate about the educational environments in which they occur and how such reflection might prime them to reshape the spaces in which they have responsibilities. In this session\, participants will:\n\n\nReflect on failures to act for justiceConsider how their lived relationship to social inequities within and outside of their educational environment shapes their willingness and ability to actExplore the tension between risk and responsibility when disrupting the status quoPractice identifying opportunities for proactive justice work in their spheres of influence in the academy.**The theatrical portion of this session contains strong language. It includes descriptions of sexist\, heterosexist\, and ableist behaviors and reflection on systemic inequities related to race and socioeconomic status. \nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master's students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Applying Japanese Garden Principles to Create Healing Spaces
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://myumi.ch/3k8p3\n\nThis presentation will provide a look at how the ancient art of Japanese gardens is transforming how we consider solutions to some of society’s most persistent problems. Hoichi and Michiko Kurisu will share healing garden projects that demonstrate the power of nature to transform individual and collective wellbeing. Projects include gardens inside a maximum-security prison\, healthcare facilities\, and wastewater treatment wetlands.\n \n Having studied landscape design and construction under Kenzo Ogata in Tokyo\, Japan\, Hoichi Kurisu was appointed Landscape Director for the Garden Society of Japan (Nihon Teien Kyokai) (1968–1972)\, during which time he supervised construction of the Portland Japanese Garden.\n \n In 1972\, he founded Kurisu International\, Inc.\, which has since designed and built a number of public gardens including the Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford\, Illinois\, Roji-en Japanese Garden at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach\, Florida\, the Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese garden at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, and the Healing Garden for Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital\, in Lebanon\, Oregon\, which was the winner of a 2006 “Healthcare Environment Award for Landscape Design.” Kurisu firmly believes that encounters with nature are essential to mental\, physical\, and spiritual equilibrium. Each of his designs addresses a unique social purpose and reinforces a quality of humanity. By harmonizing light and shade\, water and rock\, and space with the senses\, the Japanese gardens of Hoichi Kurisu restore peace of mind\, physical health\, and help to cultivate strong and compassionate communities.\n \n A professional photographer and artist\, Michiko Kurisu first began working with Kurisu International in 1999–2001 to document the construction of the Morikami Japanese Gardens in South Florida in what was intended as a brief stint with her father’s company. One thing led to the next\, and over twenty years later\, Michiko has worked closely with Kurisu on all major projects to help define the therapeutic\, healing qualities of Japanese gardens and to develop awareness of the role Japanese gardens can play in our individual and collective wellbeing. Based in South Florida\, Michiko is the co-founder and director of a community garden and food forest in Delray Beach whose mission is cultivating resilience in plants\, people\, and the community.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Shoulda\, Woulda\, Coulda: Moving Beyond Failure and Actively Cultivating a More Equitable Academy
DESCRIPTION:\nSystems of higher education in the U.S. create differential advantage and disadvantage for the people who work and learn in them. Through session activities\, participants will reflect on what failures of this kind indicate about the educational environments in which they occur and how such reflection might prime them to reshape the spaces in which they have responsibilities.\nIn this session\, participants will:\n\nReflect on failures to act for justice\nConsider how their lived relationship to social inequities within and outside of their educational environment shapes their willingness and ability to act\nExplore the tension between risk and responsibility when disrupting the status quo\nPractice identifying opportunities for proactive justice work in their spheres of influence in the academy\n\n**The theatrical portion of this session contains strong language. It includes descriptions of sexist\, heterosexist\, and ableist behaviors and reflection on systemic inequities related to race and socioeconomic status.\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/G1X6J.\n\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:How to Navigate Small Talk as an International Student
DESCRIPTION:\"In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"\"small\ntalk\"\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about\nnon-controversial topics\, such as the weather\, sports\, or popular\ntelevision shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to\nchat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to\nbuild a friendship.\n\nFor example\, while waiting for aninterview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an\nelevator on campus\, don’t be startled if a stranger says something to you\nlike\, “Did you watch the Football Game last night? What a game!” They might\nalso make a joke about the long line you’re both in\, or comment on the\ncurrent situation.\n\nIf you are interested in learning more about \"\"\"\"small talk\"\"\"\"\, nowit’s your\nchance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate smalltalk as an\ninternational student. In this workshop\, we will educate youon what is\nsmall talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with\nPeers!\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aerospace Chairs Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Clarke\, Ph.D.\nBoeing School of Engineering Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow\nDepartment of Aeronautics and Astronautics\nMassachusetts Institute of Technology\n\nThe deployment of electric vertical/short takeoff and landing aircraft has been put forth as a solution for alleviating rising traffic congestion stemming from urbanization and on-demand delivery. A limited understanding of emerging energy storage systems coupled with the use of archaic tools for modeling unconventional configurations has however plagued the development of such novel aircraft. To compound problems\, the precise impacts of introducing entire fleets of vehicles on the electric power grid\, the implications for a finite supply of natural resources\, and lastly the effects on human quality of living and wildlife have yet to be distilled. In this talk\, I will discuss a collection of ongoing research efforts geared toward tackling many of the technical challenges that spur out of the interactions between the critical domains of noise and energy. This includes the development of computational approaches to 1) complement the experimental examination of battery-electric propulsion architectures and 2) generate accurate acoustic predictions of UAM aircraft performing realistic maneuvers. By quantifying the uncertainties and sensitivities of such complex systems\, substantial progress toward sustainable aviation can be realized.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nMatthew Clarke is a Boeing School of Engineering Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. His research focuses on aircraft design\, aerodynamics\, and aeroacoustics\, with an emphasis on the analysis and optimization of electric vehicles for urban air mobility. Dr. Clarke is a Tau Beta Pi Fellow and earned his B.S. from Howard University in Mechanical Engineering and both his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He also serves the V/STOL Technical Committee of AIAA\, where he is responsible for organizing the 2023 International Powered Lift Conference co-hosted with the Society of Automotive Engineers\, the Vertical Flight Society\, and the Royal Aeronautical Society. Before joining MIT\, Dr. Clarke also worked as an aeroacoustics engineer at A3 by Airbus and briefly as a battery modeling data scientist at Toyota Research Institute in the Accelerated Materials Design & Discovery Division.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Stuff and NonSense!
DESCRIPTION:Our speakers have requested that attendants mask and the Eisenberg Institute will provide K95s at the door.\n\nThe institute will provide a streaming link upon request. Please contact (eisenberginstitute@umich.edu).\n\nAncient history can be described as the study of old stuff\, although as practiced in academia it is sometimes associated with a closed and rarified stuffiness. For those who have given up on the exclusivity of many forms of academic knowledge-making\, for those who are against that kind of history\, we ask about what happens when our history making involves actual making with matter\, so that historical inquiry becomes stuff itself\, escaping beyond the vaunted confines of the lecture hall\, the lectern\, the powerpoint\, the Argument\, the cute introductory anecdote\, and the Archive with all its known limitations. Acknowledging that such experimentation of this kind can result in silliness\, and even feel like nonsense\, artist-historians Mike Chin and Rafael Rachel Neis nonetheless invite us into their performance/installation. Let us venture into our illustrious History Department\, its hallways bedecked with stuffed animals (or as they have come to be known\, “stuffies”). As we enter together into a kind of history-making set against the certainties of familiar modes of knowing\, let us embrace / cultivate a salutary unknowing\, all the while doing stuff with stuff. \n\nMike Chin is associate professor of classics at the University of California\, Davis. He earned his PhD from Duke University. Publications include Grammar and Christianity in the Late Roman World (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2008) and Melania: Early Christianity Through the Life of One Family\, co-edited with Caroline T. Schroeder (University of California Press\, 2016).\n\nRafael Rachel Neis is professor of History and Judaic Studies and Director of the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient History at the University of Michigan. Their book\, When a Human Gives Birth to a Raven: Rabbis and the Reproduction of Species\, will be out in May 2023. \n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register first at https://myumi.ch/kxwxm\n\nAmbassador (ret.) Luis C.deBaca joins us to discuss his career trajectory in international and human rights law and provide advice for paving your own way after your undergraduate career. He will give a presentation and leave time for your questions.\n \n Ambassador (ret.) C.deBaca\, '93\, led U.S. government activities in the global fight against contemporary forms of slavery during the Obama administration. As Ambassador at Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons\, C.deBaca updated statutes created after the Civil War and through the 13th Amendment to develop the victim-centered approach to modern slavery that has become the global standard for combating human trafficking.\n \n In the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice (DOJ)\, C.deBaca investigated and prosecuted complex criminal cases\, negotiated labor and human rights advances\, and managed multi-million dollar grant portfolios combating slavery and sexual abuse. As one of the most decorated federal prosecutors in the U.S.\, he investigated and prosecuted cases of human trafficking\, hate crimes\, and police misconduct\, as well as immigration\, organized crime\, and money laundering. He built his litigation record into policy\, incorporating the voices of victims\, workers\, and the advocacy community into decision making. As principal DOJ drafter of the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act and a member of the team that negotiated the United Nations’ anti-trafficking protocol\, he helped to enshrine the \"3P\" anti-trafficking approach of prevention\, protection\, and prosecution in U.S. and international practice.\n \n Following his prosecution career\, he served as Counsel to the House Committee on the Judiciary\, where he handled issues of civil rights\, immigration\, and civil liberties\, including revisions to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. In the Obama Administration\, he served as Director of the State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons from 2009 to 2014 and as the Director of the Justice Department’s Office for Sex Offender Monitoring Apprehending\, Registering\, and Tracking from 2015 to 2017.\n \n After retiring from government service\, C.deBaca was a Senior Fellow of Modern Slavery at Yale University’s Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery\, Resistance\, and Abolition\, and served as a Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and Lecturer of Architecture at Yale School of Architecture. He also was a 2017-2019 Soros Open Society Human Rights Fellow focusing on worker-led social responsibility\, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.\n \n C.deBaca’s teaching and research interests include Criminal Law\, Race & Slavery\, Policing\, Immigration\, National Security\, Labor\, Indian Law\, International Law\, and Civil Rights. Current projects include an inquiry into the imprint of current and historical forms of slavery and involuntary servitude on the built environment\, re-thinking business practices that incentivize the use of forced labor\, and preparatory work toward a national slavery memorial in Washington\, D.C.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at is-michigan@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Plastic Bag Store
DESCRIPTION:This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor\, craft\, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically\, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.\n\nShelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand\, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day\, the store transforms into an immersive\, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry\, shadow play\, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Slavic Colloquium (Czech-themed)
DESCRIPTION:Jindrich Toman\nOne Day in the Center\, Next Day in the Periphery: Czech Avant-garde and Its Shifting Networks\nThe presentation is framed by discussions about centers and peripheries in cultural studies. It focuses on the relation between Prague and \"peripheral\" Brno avant-garde of the 1920s\, and the relation between \"peripheral\" Prague and Paris in the 1930s. The analysis stresses the asymmetric nature of these configurations.\n\nTanya Silverman\nInebriation and Westward Projections: Bolek Polívka’s Father Figures in Mid-2000s Czech CinemaIn the Czech films Pupendo (2003) and Something Like Happiness (2005)\, renowned Czech actor Bolek Polívka plays downtrodden patresfamilias who face challenges of the times that gravely impact their livelihoods. While notions of professional success in the West continuously arise in both narratives\, Polívka’s patresfamilias remain in situ\, turning to alcohol\, not only to cope with dissatisfactions but also to develop companionships and reveal their personal concerns. This paper explores how Polívka’s characters inflect the trope of the Czech anti-hero in addition to assessing the tensions between his roles in fiction films with his role as a national movie star.\n\nAs usual\, we will start around 6:30 pm with a light supper\, and the presentation will begin at 7 pm. The colloquium is in-person\, in 3308 MLB. We will have a hybrid option.\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUuceqtpjsuGtVajU7dey-Qu67oTCvF_p-T \n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Keeping resistance alive\": Chandler Davis and Academic Freedom at Michigan
DESCRIPTION:H. Chandler Davis — courageous\, stalwart and lifelong champion of academic and intellectual freedom in the face of persecution\, including his own imprisonment — passed away on September 24\, 2022\, at the age of 96. He was a former instructor at the University of Michigan who\, in 1954\, was called to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. He and others from U-M l were “unfriendly witnesses\, refusing to confess” their political dissent. Davis\, unlike the others\, based his refusal to answer only on the First Amendment\, waiving his protection under the Fifth Amendment. Thereby he deliberately invited a citation for Contempt of Congress\, so as to give himself standing to argue in court that the Committee’s proceedings were unconstitutional. He got the citation\, but he did not prevail in court\; his appeals were exhausted in 1959 and he served prison time in 1960. This Making Michigan will reflect on Davis’s life\, actions and legacy at U-M and beyond and will seek to understand and recognize his contributions. Panelists include Steve Batterson\, author of a forthcoming bio of Davis\; Peggie Hollingsworth\, founding chair and longtime director of the Academic Freedom Lecture Fund\; and Alan Wald\, expert on the political left in the US and Davis's contributions to it. \n\nThis event is both in-person at the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory on the U-M campus and virtually on YouTube.\n\nAs with other Detroit Observatory events\, in-person attendees may tour the Observatory after the conclusion of the panel\, with stargazing if weather permits.

SUMMARY:Performance:Buffalo Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Since his earliest infatuations with guitar\, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee\, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. He heard jazz in Ukraine\, blues from expat African Americans in Berlin. “Part of my intent\, making myself more comfortable with this release\, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues\,” guitarist\, songwriter\, and vocalist Buffalo Nichols explains. “Listening to this record\, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album\, composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas\, and it marks a new stage of the blues.
