SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:PRINTWORKS
DESCRIPTION:Carl Wilson is known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the nineteen forties and fifties has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\n\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like JuicyFruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. In 2017 Carl's work was a part of Detroit's contribution to The Saint-Etienne Design Biennale in France. 2017 also saw the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead & Lost in Detroit. Spring of 2018 saw Carl complete a residency at MacDowell in New Hampshire. While there he finished the writing and illustration of his graphic novel and currently the book is in negotiation for publication. The year has also seen the completion of a ten print collection based on James Weldon Johnson's Prodigal Son poetry. It was commissioned by Calvin College and Dr. Larry Gerbens.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Refugee Youth Agency in Flux: Active and Passive Waiting in Transit Country Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:*Lecture co-sponsored by the Association of Asian Studies*\n\nFor more than two decades\, Indonesia has been a transit spot for asylum seekers from Central Asia\, South Asia\, East Africa\, and Southeast Asia while irregularly en route to Australia. Following Australia’s controversial ‘stop the boats’ policy\, thousands of refugees\, including the young population\, must wait longer in Indonesia to get their refugee status processed by UNHCR and to have a chance to resettle in a third country. As a non-signatory state to the 1951 Refugee Convention\, Indonesia has a limited legal framework to protect the rights of refugees and asylum seekers\, which causes grave precarious conditions for them. Nevertheless\, arbitrariness in Indonesia’s legal framework and its flexibility in handling refugees surprisingly has provided a certain level of “informal protection” and opportunities for young refugees to make maneuvers in the fluid arenas. As they wait\, the young people also plan\, anticipate\, negotiate\, hustle\, play\, and rest. This talk will focus on the dynamics of refugee youths’ agency-in-waiting. Professor Masardi explores how young refugees exercise passive and active waiting and what contributing factors catalyze or impede the distribution of their agency.\n\nSpeaker Bio\nRealisa D Masardi is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology\, Universitas Gadjah Mada\, Indonesia. She is the awardee of the prestigious 2022 Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship in Southeast Asian Studies. Currently\, Professor Masardi is completing her postdoc program at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Professor Masardi has been working on the issues of children and young people in several migrants/refugees communities in Southeast Asia\, focusing on their identities\, access to rights\, and agency\, particularly on their everyday survival movements. She received her PhD in anthropology at the University of Amsterdam\, the Netherlands. Her dissertation focuses on the social navigation of independent young refugees from diverse countries facing precarities during transit in Indonesia. \n\nRegister here: https://myumi.ch/29V6E\n\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact cseas@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Material Culture: Objects Against the Historical Grain?
DESCRIPTION:Our guests have requested that attendants mask and the Eisenberg Institute will provide K95s at the door.\n\nThe institute will provide a streaming link upon request. Please contact (eisenberginstitute@umich.edu).\n\nHumans shape the material world every day\, but to what extent does the material shape us back? In the wake of the so-called “material turn\,” historians have become increasingly cognizant of the power of material culture\, learning to appreciate both the importance of objects as part of people’s everyday lived experience in the past and their value as a form of historical evidence. In this EIHS workshop\, graduate students working across different disciplines will explore how attending to the material can complicate traditional historical narratives and methodologies. The objects our panelists will consider run the gamut from the seemingly mundane to the monumental and fantastical: a cloak of beards from a fifteenth-century poem\, George Washington's dentures\, the nineteenth-century artist Edmonia Lewis’ Death of Cleopatra\, and milk cans from the Warsaw Ghetto. Join us as we explore how these objects tell untold stories.\n\nPanelists:\n\n• Sierra Jones (PhD Student\, Ancient History\, University of Michigan)\n• Ekaterina A. Olson Shipyatsky (PhD Student\, Political Science\, University of Michigan)\n• Lucy Smith (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Robyn Thum-O’Brien (PhD Candidate\, English Language and Literature\, University of Michigan)\n• Katherine French\, moderator (J. Frederick Hoffman Professor of History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Investigating Mobile Forager Cultural Adaptations in Central Western Patagonia\, Chile
DESCRIPTION:Central West Patagonia is an area characterized by climatic and landscape contrasts\, with a variety of ecotones within a defined area. This region is naturally divided into different river valleys\, separated by steep mountains and icecaps. One such valley\, the Ibáñez River Valley (IRV)\,\, has been investigated archaeologically since the early 1970s. The IRV contains dozens of sites dating from the Early to Late Holocene featuring residential occupations as well as rock art. However\, even with this history of research and robust signature of human behavior\, little systematic archaeological survey has been conducted in the IRV due to numerous factors (difficulty of terrain\, etc.). In this presentation\, I show the results of preliminary research to synthesize findings from already-collected archaeological materials from the Rio Ibanez with new pedestrian survey from the southern extent of the valley. Further\, in this presentation I engage with a variety of theoretical themes applicable to this unique cultural and environmental landscape and indicate profitable areas for future research.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:1/20\,000th of a Person?: Democracy & Protecting Equal Rights in Notice & Comment Rulemaking
DESCRIPTION:In 2018-2019\, civil rights activists organized opposition to a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking\, issued by then-Secretary of Education DeVos\, designed to gut U.S. Department of Education Title IX enforcement regarding sexual harassment. Although an historic—and overwhelmingly antagonistic—124\,000+ comments were filed\, ED finalized the rules\, without meaningful changes\, and four legal challenges quickly followed\, several pointing out the both strong and numerous opposing comments. These challenges relied on a particular “story” of the Administrative Procedures Act and its requirements for “notice and comment rulemakings.” That story maintains that the APA directly vested a “commenting power” in the American public as a check and balance empowering the public to stop agencies from following policies that have little to no democratic support. A competing technocratic\, oligarchic “story” of rulemakings views the public’s commenting power as simply a way to funnel technical expertise to agencies\, not an expression of Americans’ policy preferences. This story ignores and exacerbates socio-economic inequalities\, especially those linked to gender and race\, doubly excluding already politically marginalized groups from administrative lawmaking. Enter “mass commenting\,” which includes “boilerplate comments” that ordinary people often use to exercise their commenting power but agencies discount\, treating such comments\, regardless of how many people filed them\, as a single comment. This article explores how the DeVos rulemaking exposed inequalities and anti-democratic agency practices such as dismissal of legitimate mass comments. It urges agencies instead to adopt more democratic and less technocratic rulemaking procedures\, at least for rulemakings implicating equal protection of the law.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series
DESCRIPTION:Social science increasingly uses data that requires advanced tools and algorithms. Preparing text\, audio\, and video data for analysis and running those analyses involves linking contemporary computational tools with datasets and major research challenges in ways that cut across disciplines. Building bridges between data scientists who develop the tools to analyze these data and social scientists who have datasets to address research questions in unprecedented ways that could benefit from them is critical for both opening the world of these new data and refining the tools for analysis.\n \nThe Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series\, jointly sponsored by MIDAS\, the AI Lab and ISR\, is designed to build connections between social scientists and data scientists to improve scholarship in both arenas. Scholars in both groups present research vision and cutting-edge methodology that could benefit from additional interdisciplinary collaboration and theorizing. The series connects faculty\, research scientists\, postdoctoral\, and graduate students to help build major research projects from their vision\, find the right methods for their data\, identify collaborators\, or find scholars who can help trial run the tools they have developed. \n \nEvents will be held from 2:00-3:30 PM in ISR 6050 (426 Thompson Street)\, with meetings in January\, February\, March\, April\, and May. Refreshments provided. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time: https://myumi.ch/7eZWG For more information\, or if you are interested in presenting work in progress at this series\, please contact Beth Uberseder (ubersbe@umich.edu).\n \nSpeakers TBA.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Families of Elliptic Curves and the Canonical Bundle Formula
DESCRIPTION:Ruled surface is one of the most concrete examples we see when studying algebraic surfaces. These are surfaces that admit a fibration by $\PP^{1}$ over a curve. However\, ruled surfaces are very boring since they are too easy in various ways. For instance\, they can be easily classified\, there are no degenerations\, the algebraic structure of the fibre does not change\, and the canonical bundle is easy to describe.\n\nOn the other hand\, fibration by elliptic curves is way more entertaining since there are lots of things happening! We can study how the algebraic structure varies\, how the fibre degenerates to a singular one\, and can describe the canonical bundle in terms of the singular fibres and the moduli.\n\nIt turns out that these phenomena for elliptic surfaces can be generalized to many deep results in algebraic geometry such as variation of Hodge structure\, degeneration of Hodge structure\, adjunction and subadjunction\, canonical bundle formula\, semipositivity theorems\, volume asymptotics and so on.\n\nDespite the fact that elliptic fibrations are related to these profound theories in algebraic geometry\, the example itself is very classical and can be understood explicitly. I will talk about these phenomena for elliptic surfaces in various perspectives.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Alyssa Griffin\, University of California\, Davis
DESCRIPTION:The various spheres of the Earth system interact through complex physical\, biological\, and chemical processes that operate over vast spatial and temporal scales. Few aspects of the Earth system are immune to changes resulting from anthropogenic carbon emissions which continue to profoundly shape the nature and habitability of our planet. Marine sediments are the ultimate sink of anthropogenic carbon emissions on geologic timescales and a fundamental control of atmospheric CO2\, ocean chemistry\, and in turn\, Earth’s climate. Many inferences about changes in global climate and seawater chemistry over Earth’s history rely on interpretations of the geochemical signatures contained in marine sediments. Marine sediments are also inextricably linked to present-day marine resources and central to several proposed climate mitigation strategies. Understanding biogeochemical processes related to marine sediments can improve our ability to interpret Earth’s climate through time\, respond to present climatic changes\, and effectively prepare for the future consequences of climate change. \n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss my ongoing research at the nexus of marine sediment biogeochemistry and Earth’s changing climate. I will outline my research in the context of unresolved and emerging questions related to carbon cycling in marine sediments\, particularly in coastal ecosystems. Additionally\, I will highlight how studying marine sediments contributes to building coastal resiliency\, co-developing mutually beneficial academic partnerships\, and elevating the role of the earth science community in addressing the unfolding climate crisis.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Plastic Bag Store
DESCRIPTION:This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor\, craft\, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically\, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.\n\nShelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand\, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day\, the store transforms into an immersive\, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry\, shadow play\, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.

SUMMARY:Performance:Appalachian Roadshow
DESCRIPTION:Appalachian Road Show is a visionary acoustic ensemble\, bringing new-generation interpretations of traditional Americana\, bluegrass and folk songs\, as well as offering innovative original music\, all presented with a common thread tied directly to the heart of the Appalachian regions of the United States. Grammy-nominated banjoist Barry Abernathy joins forces with Grammy-winning fiddler Jim VanCleve\, fresh off of his recent stint touring with multi-platinum country artist Josh Turner\, as well as esteemed vocalist and mandolinist Darrell Webb\, who has recorded and toured with Dolly Parton and Rhonda Vincent\, among many others. The group also includes 26-year-old “old soul” guitarist Zeb Snyder\, whose fierce and versatile playing recalls Doc Watson and Norman Blake as readily as it does Duane Allman and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
