SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"From genes to geometry: organ morphogenesis via calcium-patterned muscle constrictions“
DESCRIPTION:During embryonic development\, organs fold into complex shapes that are vital for function. Specific genes are known to regulate organ form\, but the mechanical programs by which organ tissues sculpt themselves into shape remain mysterious. Here\, we trace the dynamics and mechanical interactions driving inner organ shape change using the embryonic midgut of the fly Drosophila melanogaster. By leveraging deep-tissue light-sheet microscopy for whole-organ live imaging and building a computational framework for extracting tissue deformations in dynamic 3D geometries\, we find a mechanical program folding the gut. Hox genes control the emergence of high-frequency calcium pulses\, which trigger muscle contractions. These contractions\, in turn\, induce cell shape change in the adjacent tissue layer\, collectively driving a pattern of in-plane tissue deformations. As seen in a simple model\, this in-plane pattern is linked to out-of-plane organ folding. These findings offer a mechanical route for gene expression to induce organ shape change: genetic patterning in one layer triggers a physical process to fold the organ into chambers.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Directly Detecting Light Dark Matter
DESCRIPTION:While the experimental program to detect ever lighter dark matter is proceeding full steam ahead\, the theory of such light\, detectable dark matter is at a crossroads. I will detail two examples of sub-GeV hadrophilic dark matter models which these future direct detection endeavors may discover while highlighting the serious challenges model builders face. The first achieves probe-able direct detection cross sections by way of a late-time\, dark-sector phase transition\, while the second does so by assuming the entire thermal bath is reheated at very low temperatures. Both models lead to dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sections of interest for near-future experiments for dark matter masses in the range of 100 keV-100 MeV\, often in parts of parameter space with few or no models.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Winter Seminar Series: The Color of Power: The Evolving Relationship Between Race\, Skin Color and Power in American Politics
DESCRIPTION:Mara Ostfeld\, Gerald R. Form School of Public Policy\; Center for Political Studies\, University of Michigan\n\nThe Color of Power: The Evolving Relationship Between Race\, Skin Color and Power in American Politics\n\nSkin color matters. Within and across ethnoracial groups\, skin color affects life experiences\, including one’s financial earnings\, educational opportunities\, health outcomes\, exposure to discrimination\, interactions with the criminal justice system\, and sense of group belonging. While political coalitions in the U.S. have historically revolved around ethnoracial identities\, Dr. Ostfeld draws on her book (co-authored with Nicole Yadon) to argue that skin color is an increasingly important component of how people are identifying themselves and staking positions in American racial politics.\n\nThe U.S. is experiencing unprecedented levels of political polarization relative to the past few decades\, especially in terms of affective polarization\, or feelings of dislike and distrust towards members of the opposing political party. In this winter talk series\, we will hear from experts across disciplines (social psychology\, political science\, sociology\, communication) in order to better understand why political polarization is so high and what\, if anything\, can we do about it.\n\nRCGD Seminars will be held at ISR Thompson 1430. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Distinguished Lecture on Europe. The Invention of Fascist Governmentality: 1925-1940
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Victoria de Grazia develops the concept of “fascist governmentality” to capture the historically distinctive mode of political rule that emerged at the beginning of 20th century. Focusing on Italy\, she will explore how Mussolini assembled instruments of power\, networks\, and constituencies well outside of the ordinary sphere of governance to implement his solution to “the population question.” A focus on governmentality\, she argues\, helps account for the extraordinary political fortune of fascism globally in its first iteration (1920-1945)\, its capacity to disrupt the conventions of liberal imperial governance\, and the difficulty of defeating it through peaceful means. It is also better suited to explain the breakthrough of like-structured movements from the second decade of the 21st century than ahistorical and moralizing concepts such as totalitarianism\, illiberalism\, and populist and authoritarian democracy.\n \nVictoria de Grazia is the Moore Collegiate Professor Emerita of History at Columbia University and the author of *The Perfect Fascist: A Story of Love\, Power\, and Morality in Mussolini’s Italy* (2022)\; *Irresistible Empire: America's Advance Through Twentieth Century Europe* (2005)\; *How Fascism Ruled Women: Italy\, 1922-1945* (1992)\; and *The Culture of Consent: Mass Organization of Leisure in Fascist Italy* (1981).\n \nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration is required at https://myumi.ch/J8m4D\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Presentation:Indigenous DNA and Data: Community Approaches to Equity in Genomics and Health
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous people still constitute <1% of participants in precision and genomic medicine research despite endeavors to increase inclusivity. Past ethical issues related to Indigenous genomics have not been adequately reconciled and are now being repeated in the new era of Big Data. Concerns persist about the collectivization of Indigenous data into open-access databases that circumvent tribal research oversight\, the underestimation of socioeconomic and cultural factors contributing to health disparities\, and continued biocommercial exploitation of Indigenous biomarkers.\n\nDr. Tsosie will describe community-engaged research and describe paths forward that center Indigenous people as the agents of access for their own genomic and health data. The future of Indigenous genomics is not mere inclusion but through recognition of Indigenous genomic and data sovereignty.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar: Asymptotics of q-orthogonal polynomials
DESCRIPTION:This talk focuses on q-orthogonal polynomials\, orthogonal polynomials whose orthogonality condition is supported on the discrete lattice: q^k\, for integer k . We investigate the behaviour of such polynomials in the case k>0 (q<1) and\, if time permits\, we study what happens when we relax this condition and allow k to be negative. Using the RHP framework we deduce the asymptotic behaviour of these polynomials as their degree tends to infinity\, as well as other properties such as uniqueness.\n\nA recording of the talk can be found at https://youtu.be/5HTbvRjAtbk

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics: Grassmannian Cohomology & Symmetric Polynomials
DESCRIPTION:Surprisingly\, the cohomology ring of a complex grassmannian is isomorphic to a quotient of the ring of symmetric polynomials. While a great result in its own right\, understanding this cohomology ring can also help solve problems in enumerative geometry. In this talk I will outline a proof of this result\, and time permitting\, we will also see an application of this in enumerative geometry.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Group\, Lie and Number Theory Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Title: Orbital integrals for gln and smoothening\n\nAbstract: Orbital integral is a fundamental object in the geometric side of the trace formula. A traditional method to study orbital integrals is through Bruhat-Tits building or affine Springer fiber. In this talk\, we will propose another method to study orbital integrals using smoothening. \nAs an application\, we will explain a closed formula of the orbital integral for gln with n=2\,3 and a new lower bound for a general n. We also propose a conjecture about the estimation of the orbital integral for any n. Our method works for any local field of characteristic 0 or >n. This is a joint work with Sungmun Cho.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2023 Dinkeloo Memorial Lecture: Philippe Block\, \"Disrupting Concrete Construction: digital\, sustainable and circular\"
DESCRIPTION:Disrupting Concrete Construction: digital\, sustainable and circular\n\nConcrete does not want to be a beam\; it wants to be an arch. Unreinforced concrete can be considered an artificial stone\, so the natural geometries for this material happy in compression follow the same structural principles that have kept Gothic cathedrals standing for centuries. It allows significantly reducing the amount of material needed but also building with lesser emitting materials. Recent developments in computational design\, engineering\, and construction-scale digital fabrication allow the introduction of concrete as a truly sustainable solution for spanning structures such as floor “slabs” or footbridges. This talk will introduce how we can disrupt concrete construction\, providing solutions that are lightweight\, low in embodied emissions\, and use construction demolition waste. Designing for circularity\, a discrete masonry logic is introduced\, enabling dry-assembled prefab\, demountable and reusable or easily recyclable at the end of its life. Lastly\, we will go beyond an academic exercise to propose economically competitive innovations available at scale and globally. Sounds too good to be true?\n\nPhilippe Block is professor at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at ETH Zurich\, where he leads the Block Research Group (BRG) with Dr. Tom Van Mele and is Head of the Institute. Philippe is also the Director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) on Digital Fabrication. He studied architecture and structural engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2009. Philippe and Tom apply their research into practice providing innovation in (computational) design\, engineering\, fabrication\, and construction of sustainable\, circular\, and economical structures\, addressing climate change by significantly reducing embodied emissions\, utilizing fewer single-use resources\, and minimizing construction waste.\n\nFollowing the motto “strength through geometry” and the principles of traditional unreinforced masonry construction\, the BRG translates this knowledge into projects such as the unreinforced stone Armadillo Vault\, the thin\, flexibly formed concrete shells of the NEST HiLo and KnitCandela\, the 3D-concrete-printed masonry bridge Striatus\, and the Rippmann Floor System (RFS)\, a lightweight and ultra-low-embodied floor system.\n\nThis memorial lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo's extraordinary contributions to architecture and commemorate excellence in architectural design. This annual lecture celebrates those designers whose work combines design excellence with structural ingenuity.
