SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Traces explores the relationship between the past and the present with a focus on the process of transformation as the connecting thread. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. Selected exhibitions & clients include The Academy of Sciences\, The Exploratorium\, Themes+Projects Gallery\, Minnesota Street Project\, MUKEK\, Gray Area\, Sothebys\, and Adobe. Selected press inquiries include Forbes\, Adobe Blog\, Refinery29\, Lenscratch\, Las Vegas Weekly\, Las Vegas Review Journal\, and Open Studios Guide.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Queer World Conversations
DESCRIPTION:See other Spectrum Center events: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events\n\nWe'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester\, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics\, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic\, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations\, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.\n\nTopics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required\, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want\, bring your friends\, and let's have a Conversation!\n\nUpcoming topics:\n4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity\n\nThere are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body \"should\" look like\, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever\, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative\, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?\n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event\, there is space to report that in the registration\, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form\, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented\, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Playing with Words\, Talking about War
DESCRIPTION:Ainsley Morse's book\, *Word Play: Experimental Poetry & Soviet Children’s Literature*\, traces the long history of the relationship between experimental aesthetics and Soviet children’s books. From the earliest days of the Soviet project\, children’s literature was taken unusually seriously—its quality and subject matter were issues of grave political significance. Yet\, it was often written and illustrated by experimental writers and artists who found the childlike aesthetic congenial to their experiments in primitivism\, minimalism\, and other avant‑garde trends. In the more repressive environment of the 1930s\, experimental aesthetics were largely relegated to unofficial and underground literature\, but unofficial writers continued to author children’s books. By the end of the Soviet period\, there was an unspoken consensus that children’s literature was perhaps the best part of the Soviet literary canon\; meanwhile\, the childlike aesthetic frequently migrated into unpublished unofficial poetry as well\, offering new forms and forms of poetic subjectivity for underground authors.\n \nIn this talk\, Morse will introduce the book and some of its protagonists\, while also indulging in a discussion of their work as a specifically post-war phenomenon. How might the same childlike lexical and formal elements\, abundant humor\, and childlike lyric speakers\, which served as markers of unofficial aesthetics\, additionally participate in articulating wartime and post-war experience (likewise excluded from official narratives)?\n \nAinsley Morse teaches in the Russian and comparative literature departments at Dartmouth College and is a translator of Russian and former Yugoslav literatures. Her research focuses on the literature and culture of the post-war Soviet period\, particularly unofficial or \"underground\" poetry\, as well as the avant-garde and children's literature. She translates Soviet and post-Soviet Russophone literature and theory\, as well as former Yugoslav and contemporary B/C/S literature and\, most recently\, Ukrainian modernist and contemporary poetry.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/Ek1we\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAqceGoqDosHN15uxUlzCWWN6qwjNjSQpj_ \n\nJoin us in community to practice mindfulness meditation\, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. In our ever-changing\, complex\, and challenging world\, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice\, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.\n\nWhether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner\, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CBSSM Seminar—Is a Holistic Definition of Health too Dangerous?
DESCRIPTION:This presentation challenges the position that holistic definitions of health are too socially dangerous to use widely in biomedicine or public health practice. Holistic definitions of health\, such as the World Health Organization’s definition of health as “a state of complete physical\, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity\,” have been criticized for a variety of reasons. My previous work has adopted and defended a variation on this definition. One key critique is that adopting such a definition creates social risks that are not introduced by narrower definitions of health. Critics argue that a broad holistic definition of health can serve as a grounding for healthism\, the ideology that prioritizes health over all else and seeks to promote it through intrusive surveillance\, oppressive moralistic judgments\, and pervasive interventions into everyday life. For instance\, wellness culture in the US has oppressively stigmatized people with fat bodies. I argue that the undesirable features of healthism are\, unfortunately\, equally compatible with narrower definition of health\; this is illustrated in the debates over restrictive COVID-19 pandemic policies. I conclude by arguing that opposition to holistic definitions of health is also partly a misguided reaction to distrust in communities’ capacities to define and promote health/well-being in non-oppressive ways (e.g. concerns that communities will promote holistic sexual health/well-being in ways that are sexist or heterosexist).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:2023 Helmut W. Baer Lecture | The Insidious Neutrinos\, Entropy\, and Gravitational Collapse
DESCRIPTION:This will be a hybrid event. Livestream Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lufAjs_V5Ys\n\nThe Insidious Neutrinos\, Entropy\, and Gravitational Collapse: what we learn about neutrinos\, beyond standard model physics\, and the creation of the elements\, from the collapse of massive stars\n\nThe weakest forces of nature team up to engineer the demise of massive stars\, compact objects\, and maybe the odd causal horizon volume in the very early universe. \n\nStars make a Faustian bargain with gravitation and the weak interaction: Energy generation and\, hence\, promise of a longer life\, in exchange for changing composition and the seemingly innocent loss of a little entropy through neutrino emission. It is a good deal for lower-mass stars like the sun. But the price proves to be too high for stars with masses in excess of ~ 8 solar masses\, where the neutrino emission-induced loss of entropy and the nonlinear nature of gravitation combine with the weak interaction and exotic nuclear physics to cause collapse of the cores of these stars to neutron stars or black holes. Stars with masses in excess of ~ 100 solar masses likewise are vulnerable to instability because so much of their pressure support comes from radiation. \n\nIn fact\, the nonlinear nature of gravitation means that self-gravitating systems get into trouble whenever their pressure support involves particles moving near light speed. Such objects are\, in the words of my late research mentor\, “Trembling on the verge of instability.” \n\nThat means that very subtle influences\, from known\, standard model weak interaction processes\, but perhaps also from new\, beyond-standard-model physics\, can figure in the evolution of these objects. Collapse to neutron stars or black holes is the inevitable outcome\, but clues about how these murders were committed may be found in nucleosynthesis (especially of the heaviest nuclei) and in the spectrum of remnant masses. \n\nWe will discuss how frontier issues in elementary particle physics\, especially those involving the mysterious and ghostlike neutrinos\, could figure prominently in what happens in these gravitational collapse events and their aftermath.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Markov Decision Processes with Controllable Observations
DESCRIPTION:Markov Decision Processes is a common mathematical framework employed in decision making to factor in uncertainty during the optimisation process. We explore variations to the standard setup which involve controlled observations. Exploration through the control of the quality and accuracy of observations is combined with the exploitation of the gathered information to maximise expected rewards. This differs from standard partial information setups\, where one has access to a stream of noisy information which is not subject to active controls. The trade-off is akin to the exploration vs exploitation problem in reinforcement learning. We demonstrate this idea of controlled observations by requiring a payment for observing at each instant\, in this case the value functions satisfy a system of quasi-variational inequalities\, and we discuss aspects of the numerical implementation with some numerical examples.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Arithmetic: Not Proving Fermat's Last Theorem
DESCRIPTION:In this talk we will not prove Fermat's Last Theorem\, which states that for $n>2$ there are no positive integer solutions to the equation $a^n + b^n = c^n$. There are many ways to not prove this theorem\, and our chosen method will be to explain a theorem of Ribet exhibiting 691-torsion in the class group of the 691st cyclotomic field\, and then explain why this ruins an otherwise perfectly nice strategy for proving the titular theorem. In the course of failing to produce a proof\, we will encounter class field theory\, modular forms\, abelian varieties\, and Galois representations. I will not presuppose knowledge of these concepts and this talk should be accessible to anyone familiar with number fields.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCAIM Colloquium: Modeling and Analyzing Temporal Networks and Dynamics on Them
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Two salient features of empirical temporal (i.e.\, time-varying) network data are the time-varying nature of network structure itself and heavy-tailed distributions of inter-contact times. Both of them can strongly impact dynamical processes occurring on networks\, such as contagion processes\, synchronization dynamics\, and random walks. In the first part of the talk\, I introduce theoretical explanation of heavy-tailed distributions of inter-contact times by state-dynamics modeling approaches in which each node is assumed to switch among a small number of discrete states in a Markovian manner and the nodes' states determine time-dependent edges. This approach is interpretable\, facilitates mathematical analyses\, and seeds various related mathematical modeling\, algorithms\, and data analysis (e.g.\, theorizing on epidemic thresholds\, random walks on metapopulation models\, inference of mixtures of exponential distributions\, new Gillespie algorithms\, embedding of temporal network data)\, some of which we will also discuss. The second part of the talk is on modeling of temporal networks by static networks that switch from one to another at regular time intervals. This approach facilitates analytical understanding of diffusive and epidemic dynamics on temporal networks as well as an efficient algorithm for containing epidemic spreading as convex optimization. Finally\, I will touch upon some of my interdisciplinary collaborations including those on static networks.\n\nEvent will take place in-person in 4448 East Hall and online via Zoom.\n\nZoom Webinar Link: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/98734707290

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Weekly DCMB Seminar with Refreshments
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nMost disease associated genomic variants have relatively modest effects on target gene expression in reporter or CRISPR perturbation assays. In addition\, enhancer disruption in vivo often has surprisingly weak phenotypic consequences. I will present machine learning (ML) methods (gkm-SVM and DNN) which we use to learn the complex transcription factor combinations that control enhancer activity and cell fate. I will then use these methods to develop a quantitative model for enhancer activity which shows that while promoter knockdown has robust effects on target gene expression\, individual enhancer knockdown is often weaker and affects temporal transition dynamics\, but not the final steady state. This model provides an explanation of the paradox of how enhancer variation can be strongly associated with disease risk while having individually weak effects\, by showing in detail how gene regulatory networks control developmentally important and disease relevant cell state transitions and cancer.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED - CAS Lecture | Armeno-Turkish: The Space of Language in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Worlds
DESCRIPTION:We apologize that we have had to cancel this event. We will repost the event when we are able to reschedule it.\n\nArmenians consistently composed works in Turkish (with Armenian letters)\, from the thirteenth through the twentieth centuries. Most historians have had a tendency to shy away from using Armeno-Turkish as a means of getting at myriad aspects of both pre-Ottoman Anatolian and Ottoman pasts. In fact\, aside from a few unique examples\, Armeno-Turkish texts have almost uniquely been used by historians when considering aspects of Armenian history\, literature\, or identity\, rather than as a tool for looking at realities present inside an overarching Turkish language space\, or the Ottoman Empire. In reflecting upon the volume of texts composed in Armeno-Turkish from the late medieval through the modern periods\, one can’t help but understand that many Armenians—whether monolingual\, bilingual or multilingual—were engaged with oral and written Turkish linguistic and literary cultures. And that they participated in the shared space of the Turkish lyric throughout—and before and beyond—the Ottoman Empire.\n\nRachel Goshgarian is Associate Professor of History at Lafayette College. She is a social historian who is interested in the circulation of ideas\, patterns of social organization and the communication of cultural ideals. She works with primary sources composed in Armenian\, Arabic\, Persian\, Turkish and Armeno-Turkish\, and her academic work is also deeply informed by interrogations and interpretations of material culture. Her first monograph\, The City in Late Medieval Anatolia: Inter-faith Interactions and Urbanism in the Middle East\, is forthcoming with I.B. Tauris in 2022. Goshgarian has also co-edited Architecture and Landscape in Medieval Anatolia\, 1100-1500 with Patricia Blessing (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press\, 2017) and co-authored Kendi Kendine Ermenice (or\, Teach Yourself Armenian) with Şükru Ilıçak (Istanbul: Armenian Patriarchate\, 2006). Rachel Goshgarian is a member of the Middle East Studies Association\, the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association\, and is the vice president of the Society for Armenian Studies. She serves as Reviews and Reconsiderations Editor of the Journal of the Society for Armenian Studies.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
