SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Select Works By James Charles Morris
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\, Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the artistic community.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Future Is With Our People: Sustainability Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster\, or cooking with your dad\, who grew up poor\, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies\, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us\, our communities\, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in. \n\nJoin the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Technically Well: Machine Models for Emotional Health Beyond the Human
DESCRIPTION:Register for this Zoom webinar at http://myumi.ch/pZned\n\nMany technologists in Japan hope that emerging technologies of automation and AI can address challenges to social and emotional wellbeing\; however\, some critics argue that many of the digital platforms on which those technologies rely aggravate precisely the forms of human suffering and isolation that they aim to alleviate. This talk discusses examples of social robots\, digital avatars\, and other machine models of emotional companionship in Japan to consider if people are most well when they are *technically* well.\n \n Daniel White is a sociocultural anthropologist at the University of Cambridge who researches the relationship of emotion\, politics\, and emerging media technologies. His current project documents experiments in building and living with machines with artificial emotional intelligence in Japan. His recent book is titled *Administering Affect: Pop-Culture Japan and the Politics of Anxiety*. Other publications and project information can be found at www.modelemotion.org.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:International Student Career Series: How to Navigate Small Talk
DESCRIPTION:\"In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"\"small\ntalk\"\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about\nnon-controversial topics\, such as the weather\, sports\, or popular\ntelevision shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to\nchat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to\nbuild a friendship.\n\nFor example\, while waiting for aninterview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an\nelevator on campus\, don’t be startled if a stranger says something to you\nlike\, “Did you watch the Football Game last night? What a game!” They might\nalso make a joke about the long line you’re both in\, or comment on the\ncurrent situation.\n\nIf you are interested in learning more about \"\"\"\"small talk\"\"\"\"\, nowit’s your\nchance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate smalltalk as an\ninternational student. In this workshop\, we will educate youon what is\nsmall talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with\nPeers!\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aerospace Chairs Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Emily E. Matula\, PhD\nExtravehicular Activity Instructor and Flight Controller\, NASA Johnson Space Center \n\nJoin in FXB or on Zoom at https://umich.zoom.us/j/97552260747\n\nAbstract:\nThe International Space Station (ISS) is the primary microgravity platform for long-duration spaceflight\, with crewed missions lasting approximately six months. However\, many of the required ISS life support systems are open loop\, necessitating resupply launches every few months. When considering cost and payload mass\, current launch capabilities render this approach unsustainable for missions venturing beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Closure of consumable loops\, specifically the carbon loop\, are critical to reducing this resupply need. Therefore\, I propose using photoautotrophs (algae) in life support systems as a bioregenerative approach to increase Earth independence. In my talk\, I will review (1) the current life support methods addressing human physiological needs in space\; (2) the potential mass\, power\, and volume savings by using a multifunctional bioregenerative life support system\; and (3) the impact of a dynamic spacecraft cabin environment on algae metabolism. Finally\, I will discuss my future research plan for continuing to characterize algal response to dynamic environments while expanding my focus to include species of extremophilic algae and supporting cultures through novel approaches to sustained gas/liquid contacting. Concluding with how this ongoing work would broadly benefit both spaceflight and terrestrial environments.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Emily E. Matula is an EVA instructor and flight controller at NASA Johnson Space Center under the Leidos contract. Separate from her current role\, her current research interests include using nanobubbles for sustained gas/liquid contacting for microgravity applications. Before joining Johnson Space Center\, she earned her Ph.D. as a NASA Space Technology Research Fellow in 2019 at the University of Colorado in aerospace engineering (bioastronautics). There\, her research focused on closing the carbon loop in crewed spaceflight using bioregenerative approaches\, specifically algae. Prior to the University of Colorado\, Dr. Matula earned her bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and master’s space engineering at the University of Michigan. Her awards include the AIAA Neil Armstrong Graduate Award and the University of Colorado’s John Vise Graduate Award for excellence in aerospace.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: Linking ecology and epidemiology to understand pathogen evolution
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nPathogen evolution presents a continuously moving target for modern medicine. Biomedical interventions like vaccines and targeted drugs are cornerstones of modern life and medicine. In isolation\, however\, these costly and reactive approaches aimed at eradicating bacteria concomitantly select for more virulent and resistant variants and ultimately\, ease their spread. Interventions that are informed by evolution and ecology have the potential to confront the largest sources of preventable death in the US and will play a key role in the future of personalized medicine.\n\nMetabolic adaptations precede and facilitate pathogen evolution by offsetting the fitness costs of energetically expensive traits like virulence\, transmission\, and drug resistance. Despite understanding the basic molecular mechanisms governing metabolic-specific adaptations to various drugs\, we remain far from accurately predicting their effects on pathogen evolution to tailor metabolic-based therapeutics. My research seeks to close this gap by developing and empirically testing multi-scale mathematical models to understand how metabolic adaptations influence the fitness landscape and evolutionary trajectory of pathogens.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomechanics of the Femoropopliteal Artery in the Lower Limb
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDespite years of technological and pharmacological improvements\, failure rates remain high for the lower extremity peripheral arterial disease repairs\, particularly when the repair devices cross the knee joint. Though much work has been done investigating the pathological processes associated with this failure\, the underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. The main arterial segment within the leg\, the femoropopliteal artery\, appears to be significantly different from other peripheral arteries due to lower blood flow and large deformations experienced during flexion of the limbs. Understanding the magnitude of these deformations in different postures and arterial segments may help improve repair devices through benchtop and computational studies of device-artery interactions. These studies rely on comprehensive assessments of arterial mechanics and structure and call for innovative ways of accounting for patient demographics and risk factors to deliver realistic results. We will summarize our findings related to the quantification of the biomechanical environment of the lower limb arteries\, describe their structure and mechanical properties in the context of age and disease\, present in vitro and computational frameworks to evaluate device-artery interactions\, and introduce a preclinical animal model to assess the performance of new endovascular and open surgical repairs for the lower extremity.\n\nBio:\nDr. Kamenskiy earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln\, and started his academic career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. After advancing through the academic ranks and receiving tenure in Surgery\, Dr. Kamenskiy joined the Department of Biomechanics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha\, where he currently serves as Department Chair. In his research\, Dr. Kamenskiy integrates Biomechanics and Medicine using in vivo\, ex vivo\, in vitro\, and in silico methods. His lab is interested in vascular mechanophysiology\, mechanobiology\, and aging and closely collaborates with vascular surgeon-scientists who share the goal of developing practical solutions to improve clinical outcomes for vascular disease patients. Dr. Kamenskiy has assembled one of the largest databases of human artery mechanical\, structural\, and demographic characteristics that includes well over 1\,000 specimens 12 to 99 years old. This database is a unique resource for understanding the complex and diverse pathology of human blood vessels. In addition to studying ex vivo arteries\, the team of Dr. Kamenskiy also utilizes cell and organ culture systems and large animal models to explore the disease pathways they observe in human tissues. This research is accompanied by designing\, modeling\, and testing of new vascular and endovascular repair materials and devices for various vascular pathologies and trauma that his team carries out using bench-top\, porcine\, human cadaver\, and clinical experiments.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91712262512

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Reviving old Desires: The Rubaiyat\, the Victorian Underworld\, and the Mass Market for the Orient
DESCRIPTION:Edward FitzGerald likely translated the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam as a roman-a-clef about the end of his relationship with his Persian teacher and lover\, Edward Cowell. Self-published in 1859\, it attracted the attention of the Pre-Raphaelites\, who deployed it in their search for alternative forms of sexuality and post-Renaissance culture in Victorian London. From this circle it jumped to the public and became a century-long bestseller that created new possibilities for role-playing and world creation. The massive impact of this slight volume raises questions about the Anglo-American uses of the Orient for purposes of self-enlargement.\n\nLink here to access the full text of the 75 quatrains published in FitzGerald's first edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam: https://myumi.ch/JppNw\n \nJuan Cole is the Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History and director of Arab and Muslim-American Studies in American Culture at the University of Michigan. He is past president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America. His most recent books include Peace Movements in Islam\, ed. (Bloomsbury\, 2021)\, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam: a New Translation from the Persian (Bloomsbury\, 2020)\, Muhammad: Prophet of Peace amid the Clash of Empires (The Nation Books\, 2018)\, and The New Arabs: How the Millennial Generation is changing the Middle East (Simon & Schuster\, 2014).\n\nThis event is presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. SUMMARY:Presentation:Pathways to Publishing: From Dissertation to Book
DESCRIPTION:Pathways to Publishing: From Dissertation to Book\n\nPresentation by Saida Grundy\, Assistant Professor of Sociology\, African American & Black Diaspora Studies\, and Women’s and Gender Studies at Boston University\n\nSaida Grundy is a feminist sociologist of race & ethnicity. Her research to date has focused upon formations and ideologies of gender and racialization within the Black middle class–specifically men. Using in-depth interviews\, her current work examines graduates of Morehouse College\, the nation’s only historically Black college for men. Quite simply\, this work asks how\, in light of an ongoing national climate and discourse about young Black men “in crisis\,” the men of Morehouse experience racialization and the process of “making” manhood at an institution that frames Black male elites as the solution to the crisis and the rightful representatives of the racial agendas. Her most recent book\, Respectable: Politics and Paradox in Making the Morehouse Man (University of California Press\, 2022)\, expands upon this work.

SUMMARY:Other:Probing and Controlling the Dynamics of Photochromic Molecules
DESCRIPTION:Photochromic molecular switches are compounds that change color upon optical excitation. The color change is a response to the making\, breaking\, and rearranging of bonds in the molecule. We use ultrafast spectroscopy to probe changes in the molecular structure and to reveal new information about the fundamental reaction dynamics of molecules in solution. In particular\, we examine the dynamics of molecules in highly excited electronic states (above S1). We use both transient absorption and resonance Raman measurements to monitor the dynamics of molecules that are excited using a pair of time-delayed laser pulses. Beyond simply watching the reaction unfold\, sequential excitation with two independent photons allows us to control the dynamics of the molecule and influence the outcome of the reaction. For example\, selectively varying the relative time delay and wavelength for secondary excitation allows the molecule to sample different reaction channels. These experiments probe the potential energy surfaces that determine the motions of the atoms and provide unique insight on the dynamics of molecules in highly excited electronic states\, an important frontier in chemical reaction dynamics. \n \n \nChris Elles (University of Kansas)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT: Microlocal analysis in dynamics
DESCRIPTION:In these two lecture series\, we'll delve into the world of microlocal analysis and its applications in dynamics. In the first lecture\, I'll introduce you to pseudo-differential calculus. We will axiomatize these objects and establish the key properties they enjoy. Pseudo-differential operators are used to make sense of a \"function of differential operators.\" This is achieved through a simple trick: using the Fourier transform\, differential operators become merely polynomials. With a bit more care\, you can define many other types of \"functions of differential operators.\" No prior knowledge is required. Welcome!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nicole Marroquin - Penny Stamps Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Nicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Marroquin works with youth and communities to decenter dominant narratives and to address displacement and erasure. Her current work explores belonging through histories of student rebellions in Chicago Public Schools from 1968 to 1980. Through research and creative practice\, she aims to recover and re-present histories of Black and brown youth and women’s leadership in the struggle for justice in Chicago. \n \nMarroquin has presented her work at the Kochi Biennale\, the Annual Conference of the American Association of Research Librarians\, University of Maine\, New York Archivist Round Table\, Jane Addams Hull House Museum\, Northwestern University\, DePaul Museum of Art\, on WLPN Lumpen Radio\, Gallery 400\, Hyde Park Art Center and more. Her essays are included in the Visual Art Research Journal\, Counter-Signals\, the Chicago Social Practice History Series\, Revista Contratiempo\, Where the Future Came From\, and Organize Your Own: The Politics and Poetics of Self-Determination Movements. She has been an artist in residence at the Chicago Cultural Center supported by the Propeller Fund at Mana Contemporary\, at Watershed\, Ragdale\, ACRE\, Oxbow\, and was recently awarded the coveted USA Artist Fellowship\, recognizing the most compelling artists working and living in the United States today. \n \nMarroquin’s appearance in the series happens in tandem with an exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery which combines documentary photographs from influential artist\, teacher and friend Diana Solis with Marroquin’s own creative work in response to Diana’s imagery. Solis’s documentary photography reflects 25+ years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing\, primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975-1990. The exhibition is intimate\, illuminating\, bold and irreverent\, capturing the energy and endurance derived from Marroquin’s experience attending to the temporarily lost collection of photographs\, as well as the lineages of care-work that have emerged throughout the process.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:\"With Care\" Opening Reception and Q & A
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community\, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation With Care\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990.\n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history.
