SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Select Works By James Charles Morris
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\, Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the artistic community.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Future Is With Our People: Sustainability Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster\, or cooking with your dad\, who grew up poor\, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies\, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us\, our communities\, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in. \n\nJoin the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion\, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible. \n\nWhen paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive\, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production\, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist. \n\nThere is an additional assumption that those who identify as women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique\, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such. \n\nIn an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions\, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices\, this exhibition brings together women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion\, their other identities (be those related to their race\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, or status as artists)\, and their practices.\n\nParticipating Artists:\nNour Ballout\nYasmine Diaz\nArshia Fatima Haq\nYasmine Kasem\nManal Shoukair\nSaba Taj

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Richard Zemel\, Professor\, Department of Computer Science\, Columbia University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Learning-based predictive algorithms have tremendous potential to reduce costs and improve outcomes in a breadth of domains including business\, healthcare\, and government. Rigorous guarantees about the performance of such powerful algorithms are necessary in order to ensure their responsible use. I will describe current results in this area\, focusing on the most recent work\, which bounds the expected loss of a predictor. In many risk-sensitive applications this is not sufficient\, as the distribution of errors is important. In such cases\, the quantiles of the loss distribution incurred by a predictor are an alternative and informative way of quantifying its performance. I will present a new framework we have developed for deriving a variety of efficient upper bounds on loss quantiles\, which\nencompasses previous methods and offers novel formulations. The quantiles can be used as the basis for model validation to select the best predictor from a set\, and issue rigorous guarantees on its generalization performance. I will present theoretical properties of our proposed method and demonstrate its ability to control loss quantiles on several real-world datasets.\nhttps://www.cs.columbia.edu/~zemel/

DESCRIPTION:Author of “Black Girlhood in the Nineteenth Century”\, Associate Professor of English and African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky\, and long-time researcher Dr. Nazera Wright is working on her second book titled “African American Women Writers and their Libraries”. Wright explores Frances E. W. Harper\, who extended her private library to other African American Women to grant them access to literature and research that they wouldn’t have otherwise had access to. Wright's new book uncovers the radical and transgressive practices that black women writers engaged in to gain access to research libraries at the end of the nineteenth century.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Privacy@Michigan Keynote: Privacy\, Power\, & Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Register to join the 2023 Privacy@Michigan keynote with Dr. Kirsten Martin on Friday\, February 17 at 11 a.m. \n\nDr. Kirsten Martin for a Privacy@Michigan keynote presentation on privacy expectations on online platforms. Standard approaches to privacy assume individuals relinquish privacy expectations when online or have focused on individuals in relation to a single company. Platforms\, such as social media\, marketplaces\, search engines\, etc\, are unique in having duties beyond a standard company while also having access to the data of millions of individuals. Dr. Martin will discuss how we need to think about platforms\, particularly powerful platforms\, as having an obligation to respect the privacy of their users and what that obligation actually entails. Dr. Martin is a University of Michigan College of Engineering alumna. \n\nDr. Florian Schaub\, Assistant Professor of Information\, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, College of Engineering\, will facilitate Q&A time after the keynote presentation.\n\nThis hybrid event will be hosted in person in Forum Hall\, on the fourth floor of Palmer Commons\, and livestreamed on the Privacy@Michigan events page [https://safecomputing.umich.edu/events/privacy-at-michigan/privacy-day-2023/Keynote-Dr-Martin]\n\nRefreshments will be available just prior to the event.\n\nEvent Registration: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScoH_8y6kGaki_obU0hPoMPFCJ3SRHkg6bKb0GTRX0GkGGX6g/viewform?usp=sf_link

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Anti-Racism in an Abroad Context
DESCRIPTION:Structural racism in the United States is the normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics—historical\, cultural\, institutional\, and interpersonal—that routinely advantage whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity\, primarily characterized by white supremacy—the preferential treatment\, privilege\, and power for white people at the expense of other racially oppressed people. It is also important to recognize that racism is a global issue and continues to be perpetuated in societies across the globe and it manifests in many different ways at various levels. This anti-racism workshop in an abroad context aims to offer an entryway for students to engage in observing how racism plays out in different societies outside the United States\, utilizing examples\, particularly media representation\, that may reflect deeper messages\, and what it means to be anti-racist in the abroad context for American students who have been abroad\, or may be visiting\, studying\, or traveling abroad.\nThis workshop will engage participants in the following activities:\n\nBetter understanding of the phrase “anti-racism”\nLearning about race and its nuances\nRecognizing how culture can shape how racism and power structures develop\nSeeing how media around the world uphold oppression in different ways\nCreating action steps toward actively recognizing oppression abroad\n\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at myumi.ch/M9QNW\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Constructing Translocal Identities in Neolithic Northwestern China: Insights from Ceramic Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Over the last century archaeologists have investigated late Neolithic and Bronze Age interaction networks spanning Eurasia\, which in the east connected steppe pastoralists with farming communities in what is now northwestern China. While much attention has focused on the adoption and impact of technologies and domesticates from western Asia in eastern Asia\, few models have been put forth to explain how and why these networks formed and functioned. What research has been done on this topic has generally focused on analysis of ceramics and metal objects to suggest long-distance movement of commodities between broad geographic regions. Here I suggest that to understand long-distance interactions\, we first need to understand the movements of people and goods at the site-specific level\, which I theorize using the concept of translocality. This talk will draw on recent petrographic analysis of ceramic vessels from the Tao River Valley of Gansu Province as well as collections from across northwestern China in the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm\, Sweden. My results demonstrate that localized interaction was occurring on a regular basis among settlements in the Tao River Valley\, and was likely a key aspect of identity formation across a much wider region.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Losing the Plot? How narrative identity challenges affect independent scientists’ progression\, thriving\, and resilience
DESCRIPTION:Creating and maintaining a clear\, meaningful\, and sustainable narrative about one’s identity is both a fundamental human motive and is associated with a host of positive outcomes. Typically\, organizations and professional institutions provide people with scripts for building such an identity which serve to guide behavior\, clarify relational expectations\, and define career pathways. Yet despite investing heavily in their own education and training\, professional gig workers may struggle to develop their identity story both because they lack the guidance of such structures and because the dynamics of gig work continually challenge important elements of one’s narrative identity\, including plot\, characters\, coherence\, continuity. In this paper we ask two interrelated questions: How does the experience of ongoing narrative challenges impact workers’ weekly behaviors and well-being? And how do gig workers build their career narratives? Addressing the first question\, we propose that such challenges don’t only manifest as occasional bouts of existential anxiety\, but instead are experienced as everyday realities that affect individuals’ sense of weekly progress\, their feelings of thriving in their work lives\, and their perceptions of their own resilience by affecting their ability to both stay focused and motivated\, and exhibit the proactivity needed to get ahead of problems and tackle challenges. We test and find support for our hypotheses with longitudinal survey data collected three times per week over five weeks from 207 independent scientists. To address the second question\, we analyze 244 independent scientists’ reports about their career sensemaking and future plans. These data are the first that we know of to explore how professional gig workers conceptualize and think about careers in the gig economy and offer insight into the core plot themes that gig workers use to make sense of and craft their stories of their work selves. Our paper contributes to theorizing at the intersection of identity and gig work by demonstrating how narrative identity serves as a critical resource for contemporary workers and providing insight into how professional gig workers build this resource by writing their career narratives as they go.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Archival Play: Art Making and Archives
DESCRIPTION:The Latinx Studies Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop invites you to a conversation featuring two guests\; artist and educator Nicole Marroquin and art historian Deanna Ledezma. Moderated by American Culture PhD candidate Pau Nava. Using the concept of play in the archive\, this conversation discusses how Chicago artists and scholars engage in community based archival practices as part of art education and artistic practice. This talk will include images and examples from the Diana Solis Archival Collection\, featured in With Care\, an exhibition by Nicole Marroquin on view at U-M's Institute for the Humanities from February 16 to March 22\, 2023. How have artists used and engaged archival collections as part of their practice? How can community archival practice be a form of artistic intervention? How are artists re-imagining the relationship between archives and community? How do artists toe the line between creating and collecting an archival collection?

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Book Launch for \"The ABC's of Black Authors\" by Lauren McHale Mills
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book launch of The ABC&#039\;s of Black Authors\, a new coloring\nbook and reading guide created by Stamps Student Lauren McHale Mills (BFA\n‘23). Every spread in the book contains an illustration of an author\,\nwith a short biography and reading list. \nFor the event\, Lauren will be in conversation with fellow Stamps\nstudent Moteniola Ogundipe (BFA ‘23) speaking about how she created the book\nand why she felt publishing this book right now was so important. Following\nLauren and Moteniola’s conversation there will be a book signing\, a reception\nwith light refreshments and a few select spreads from the book available for\nguests to color and take home. There will also be the opportunity for you to\npurchase your own copy of the book. \n\nLauren explains: “I created this book to primarily introduce\nnew audiences to a small selection of Black authors they may not have previously\nknown. I also hoped that individuals who were already lovers of Black\nliterature\, or literature in general\, would find enjoyment in these pages. My\naim for this book was for it to serve as not only a coloring book\, but an artist\nbook. As these 26 illustrations were crafted to be stand-alone art pieces as\nwell.”\n\n\nThe first 10 guests will receive a complimentary copy of the book.\nAdditional books will be for sale. \n\nPlease contact Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan at jenjkhan@umich.edu\nfor more information.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar: The equivariant Hilbert series and formal languages
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by statistical models with varying numbers of parameters\, in the past decade there has been an interest in asymptotic phenomena for infinitely many objects such as ideals and algebras related by a group action. We can record detailed quantitative data for infinitely many related objects in a multivariate formal power series\, which we call the equivariant Hilbert series. The rational form of these series\, if it exists\, is of interest as it can provide additional data about the objects in study. In searching for this rational form\, we utilize theory of languages and their automata from computer science. For a language and a weight function on it\, the sum of weights of words in the language is a multivariate formal power series. This series has a always rational presentation when the language satisfies certain rules determined by a directed graph on a finite number of nodes\, commonly known as a regular language. The rational form can be easily computed via the graph. Now\, given a family of related algebraic objects\, we search for regular languages and weights on them such that their formal power series equals the equivariant Hilbert series for our related objects. The talk will be introductory and is based on is based on https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.07849 and https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.13026. No knowledge on Hilbert series or languages will be assumed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Information loss\, Chaos\, and the Emergence of Type III1 Algebras
DESCRIPTION:The decay of the left-right correlators in an eternal black hole is one of the simplest manifestations of the black hole information loss problem. \nThe subalgebras of left and right decorrelate under the time evolution asymptotically\, and monotonically due to the stretching of the wormhole.\nFrom the point of view of quantum mechanics\, dynamical decorrelation is so special that can be used as a clue to the nature of operator algebras in quantum gravity.\nIn particular\, I will argue that asymptotic decorrelation uniquely fixes the operator algebras to be the type III1 von Neumann algebras. I will comment on the connections between the emergence of the second law\, the decay of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (chaos)\, and the emergence of type III1 algebras.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Rose Cory\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The thawing of organic carbon stored in arctic permafrost soils\, and its oxidation to carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas)\, is predicted to be a major\, positive feedback on global warming. However\, current estimates of the magnitude of this feedback do not include the oxidation of permafrost soil organic carbon flushed to sunlit lakes and rivers. We showed that ancient dissolved organic carbon (> 4\,000 years old) draining permafrost soils is readily oxidized to carbon dioxide by sunlight. Our discovery dispels an assumption that ancient carbon released from permafrost soils is unreactive to sunlight\, and was made possible by an advance in technology that measures the CO2 produced at specific wavelengths of sunlight rather than the traditional coarse assessment across all wavelengths. Our novel approach also revealed that iron catalyzes the sunlight oxidation of modern and ancient lignin and tannin from permafrost soils to CO2. As a consequence\, current estimates of additional global warming from the permafrost carbon feedback may be too low by ~ 14%.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR. - On dimension theory of random walks and group actions by circle diffeomorphisms
DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will present a joint work with W. He and Y. Jiao. We study the random walks and group actions by circle diffeomorphisms. Under mild assumptions we establish several results on the dimensional properties of invariant measures and attractors (limit sets or minimal sets). Our results include exact dimensionality and dimension formula of stationary measures\, variational principles for dimensions in various settings\, estimates of Hausdorff dimension of exceptional minimal set\, etc. We also show an approximation theorem for random walks by circle diffeomorphisms which is analogous to the results of Katok\, Avila-Crovisier-Wilkinson\, Morris-Shmerkin.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: p-adic Measures for Reciprocals of L-functions
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In 2014\, Gelbart\, Miller\, Panchishkin\, and Shahidi introduced a p-adic analog to part of the Langlands-Shahidi method by studying the reciprocal of the p-adic L-function through the Fourier series expansion of Eisenstein series on SL_2(Z). In this talk\, I discuss an analogous result in the case where K is a totally real number field. More precisely\, I will construct a certain p-adic measure whose Mellin transform is the reciprocal of the Deligne-Ribet p-adic L-function. This construction arises from the analysis of the non-constant Fourier coefficients of the Eisenstein series on the Hilbert modular group SL_2(O_K).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Ming Xiang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago. \n\nTITLE: Reducing Uncertainty in Contact-induced Syntactic Change\n\nABSTRACT: Language change could arise when the younger generation of speakers do not fully replicate the linguistic patterns produced by the older generation. The statistical learning literature has shown that children (and adults too under some conditions) tend to regularize the statistical patterns in their input\, i.e. they reduce the amount of variation in the input data (Hudson Kam&Newport 2009). From the information-theoretic perspective\, this process reflects the reduction of uncertainty (entropy) in the data. The regularization process over multiple generations has also been formalized using Bayesian models (Reali and Griffiths 2009). These studies\, however\, were based on artificial language learning paradigms\, and the question remains whether and how similar regularization processes could arise in natural languages. In this talk I will present some recent work that investigates word order changes in Cantonese in the last 60 years. Two groups of native Cantonese speakers (18-70 years old\, highly proficient speakers) were examined\, one from Guangzhou and the other one from Hong Kong. Both Cantonese-speaking communities are in close contact with Mandarin Chinese\, but the two communities also have substantial differences in their linguistic experiences and linguistic attitudes. Production data collected on ditransitive constructions revealed regularization patterns in Cantonese across generations in both communities\, and crucially\, this result is not an assimilation to the Mandarin patterns. A control group of Mandarin speakers in Beijing showed no changes in Mandarin on the same task. These results suggest that the effect of reducing uncertainty/variation is specific to bilingual/multilingual environments. A separate set of experiments suggest that it is likely the bilingual production process\, instead of the tracking/encoding of the bilingual input\, that led to the observed behavior. Finally\, I will also show some preliminary data that found the opposite pattern: in some situations Cantonese speakers also introduced more variants into their language\, instead of reducing variants. I tentatively suggest that increasing variation could also be interpreted as uncertainty reduction if we distinguish speaker (production) oriented uncertainty vs. listener (comprehension) oriented uncertainty.\n\nYou can also join us via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99682031517

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Numerical Methods for Vorticity Dynamics on a Sphere
DESCRIPTION:The Barotropic Vorticity Equation describes the balance of vorticity and the Coriolis force for a fluid moving on a rotating sphere\, and is important in geophysical fluid dynamics. In this talk\, I will discuss some numerical considerations\, first presenting some basics of geophysical fluid dynamics\, before presenting a short derivation of the barotropic vorticity equation\, and then moving on to discuss various numerical aspects of the problem. I will focus on a Lagrangian particle discretization\, as well as a new fast summation technique based on a spherical tree code. I will also touch on the role of adaptive mesh refinement.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Digital Influencers and the Business of “Data Tested” Campaigns in India
DESCRIPTION:This event cosponsored by the U-M Center for Ethics Society and Computing.\n\nThis talk will delve into the narratives and strategies of a new class of political consultants and the divergent practices of election influencers in India\, to propose “shadow politics” as a digitally mediated structure of election campaigning. Highlighting the specificity of shadow politics in terms of “data centricism” and the dual structure of official-unofficial campaign streams\, I will discuss how disinformation and extreme speech production is intricately linked to the logics of political marketing and growing uptake for digital tools that define the evolving spaces of commercial political consultancy. Theoretically positioning “shadow politics” in relation to distinctive mass political cultures of South Asia discussed in postcolonial scholarship\, I will conclude by highlighting policy directions for disinformation regulation.\n \n Sahana Udupa is Professor of Media Anthropology at the University of Munich (LMU) and Principal Investigator of the For Digital Dignity Research Network. Her latest publications include the co-authored monograph\, Digital Unsettling: Decoloniality and Dispossession in the Age of Social Media (New York University Press\, with E. G. Dattatreyan)\, and co-edited volume\, Digital Hate: The Global Conjuncture of Extreme Speech (Indiana University Press). She is the recipient of Joan Shorenstein Fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School\, Francqui Chair (Belgium) and European Research Council Grant Awards.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:TEDxUofM 2023 Conference: Glitch
DESCRIPTION:Glitch\nOur theme for this year’s conference is GLITCH. Glitches represent the idea that life often tries to derail us off a steady path. Although we may experience a setback or glitch\, we can learn from it\, propel forward\, and start to appreciate every pixel of our experiences. We aim to cultivate an attendee experience that reflects the many meanings of this theme. As always\, we hope those who attend our conference will leave having discovered the importance of their own glitches while learning to look for the positive outcomes.\n\nSpeakers\nOur speakers have already been selected for this year's conference. They will be revealed here and on our social media throughout the month of January. Make sure to follow us on social media and check back regularly for when they are announced. \n\nDr. Feranmi Okanlami\n\nDr. Feranmi Okanlami is the Director of the first-ever Adaptive Sports and Fitness program at the University\, an assistant professor of family medicine\, and serves as director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services. After facing a spinal cord injury in his third year of orthopedic surgery residency at Yale that paralyzed him from the chest down\, he has gone on to pursue several degrees and receive the Nielson award for his disability advocacy. He served on the St. Joseph County Board of Health\, appointed by then Mayor\, Pete Buttigieg and has been featured on news outlets including CBS News\, PBS News Hour\, and Good Morning America. Dr. Okanlami continues to push for DEI and accessibility with his message that disability is not inability. \n\nIn his talk he hopes to explore disability as a fabric of diversity and its relationship with society.\n\nElizabeth Trinh\n\nElizabeth is originally from Vietnam and is currently a Ph.D. student and researcher in the Management and Organizations program at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. She has a unique life story of growing up in a small town in Georgia since her father was on a Student Visa in America. The community however in her small town was something that molded her to become the person she is today even though it was a very segregated town as her family was the only people of Asian descent there. When she got older\, she moved to Atlanta where she first started to see people who looked like her. She further went to Stanford for her undergraduate degree in premed studies. \n\nIn her talk\, she hopes to tell her story and how it affected her to learn the importance of mentorship and creating meaningful connections wherever we go! \n\nAmy Tseng\n\nAmy is a passionate speaker who works at Walt Disney as a Technical Director\, which act as the bridge between the art and technical sides of animation (ex. The water in Moana). She grew up in a small town in Port Huron\, MI and was always a part of many different activities in sports\, theater\, music\, and academics. At first\, she worked for Nordstrom\, but really wanted to do some creative work as well\, which is how she decided to apply for Walt Disney. So far she has worked on Zootopia+ (which is her favorite project so far)\, Strange World\, and is working on a film that comes out in 2024. She is currently based in Los Angeles\, CA.\n\nIn her talk\, she will touch on story telling and how “everyone is a storyteller” as everyone has experiences that build off of each other and all of these experiences when growing up builds our stories!\n\nTommy Searle\n\nTommy is an app developer and is a 2020 UofM Alumni! During his first year in Michigan\, he lost his dad to suicide. He ran 6 campaigns surrounding mental health awareness\, sold t-shirts\, and raised over $20\,000. He began interning at LinkedIn but soon recruited his closest friends to quit their jobs and create their first app\, WellNest. Throughout his work\, he loved seeing people wear or use the products he created. His goals for the future include increasing the happiness that we feel on our phones and breaking the pattern of phones disconnecting us. Tommy speaks in such a confident and genuine way that is truly inspiring.\n\nIn his talk\, he will touch on topics such as persistence\, turning something “bad” into a good positive force of energy\, and being unafraid of failing!\n\nNicole Auerbach\n\nNicole is a sports journalist for the Athletic. She is also a UofM alumnus and at her time here she wrote for the Michigan Daily Sports section\, being one of the very few females in that category. She originally thought she would pursue business in college but someone in her dorm told her about the Michigan Daily. That changed the trajectory of her life and through working at the Michigan Daily she worked her way up after having many internships to a first full-time job as an editor at USA Today. From 2017 to the present\, she is doing football reporting for the Atlantic and she does some radio coverage on the side with Sirius XM. \n\nIn her talk\, she will speak about her experience being a woman in the sports industry\, a heavily male-dominated space\, and resiliency through coping with difficult situations in what many perceive as a “dream job”. \n\nAnnie Rauwerda\n\nAnnie is currently a freelance writer and she runs the “Depths of Wikipedia” account on Instagram which holds 1.1 million followers. During her time as a Junior at UofM when COVID hit she was able to take time to post her favorite things from Wikipedia on Instagram. This quickly became a hit with people on Instagram and this growth allowed her to freelance as a junior doing live shows and stand-up comedy while still in college. She was able to get a book deal and do a show tour around the country. Through this whole incredible experience\, she learned the importance of digital archives for the sake of history. She continues to run “Depths of Wikipedia” through not only Instagram but also Twitter (650k)\, and TikTok (140k) and does comedy and speaking engagements about Wikipedia.\n\nIn her talk\, she will talk about the importance of creating human knowledge and how Wikipedia encourages this along with adding some standup and humorous elements to her talk.\n\nDavid Siev\n\nMidwest-born and raised\, David Siev is a first-generation Cambodian-Mexican-American filmmaker. Before directing Bad Axe\, his SXSW award-winning feature debut based on his family’s restaurant in rural Michigan\, David spent his early career learning guerilla filmmaking under director Jeff Tremaine. This experience prepared David to make his directorial debut with his award-winning narrative short\, Year Zero\, based on his father’s experience of escaping Cambodia. David’s work on Bad Axe has been celebrated with numerous accolades\, including the Critic’s Choice Award for Best First Feature Documentary and he is on the Oscar shortlist for documentary features. David now lives in NYC\, focusing on developing narrative and documentary projects.\n\nIn his talk\, he will touch on the immigrant experience and the American Dream along with coming from nothing to making something of yourself in an unknown field!\n\nJi Hye Kim\n\nJi Hye Kim is the award-winning chef/owner of Miss Kim in Ann Arbor\, MI. Named one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs of 2021\, Ji Hye aims to broaden the understanding of Korean cuisine through her cooking. She was born in Seoul\, Korea\, and was introduced to cooking by her mother\, a talented home cook. Her family immigrated to New Jersey\, and Ji Hye went on to study political science and economics at the University of Michigan. Since Ji Hye attended U-M during the Asian financial crisis\, she had to take two years off to make cash for school through waitressing because she did not have a work permit. After years of hard work\, Ji Hye was able to finish college and open her first restaurant Miss Kim\, which has now been named one of Ann Arbor’s “Most Essential Restaurants” by Eater. At her acclaimed restaurant Miss Kim\, her seasonal menu is inspired by ancient Korean culinary traditions and adapted to local Midwestern ingredients.\n\nIn her talk\, she will touch on how we are all a complex mix of identities but society often wants to put us in one box and how to lead with empathy by creating a system that sets people up to have a more equitable workplace!

SUMMARY:Performance:Misty Lyn & The Big Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:As a fixture of the Michigan folk music scene for over a decade\, Misty Lyn Bergeron has penned haunting melodies over simple arrangements that traverse the gothic\, literary fringes of American roots music. Pulling from a wealth of vivid subject matter\, her songs are cathartic and poetically rich works that approach sometimes difficult topics such as death\, loss\, heartache\, and healing. After getting in a serious car accident in 2015\, there has been a noticeable shift toward love\, light\, and hope in her music\, while still maintaining a deep connection with the things that are lost and those that are fading. Members of The Big Beautiful include Matt Jones (drums)\, Ryan Gimpert (guitar and pedal steel)\, Carol Catherine Gray (fiddle\, vocals\, tambo)\, and Jim Roll (bass). Misty Lyn & The Big Beautiful come to The Ark with a new release\, “The Narrows.”
