SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Future Is With Our People: Sustainability Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster\, or cooking with your dad\, who grew up poor\, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies\, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us\, our communities\, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in. \n\nJoin the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:With Care
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community\, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation *With Care*\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990. \n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Border Crossings: Transnational and Exophonic Voices in Contemporary Japanese Literature
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://myumi.ch/XVA9x\n\nSince the late 1980s\, transnational and exophonic authors have become an increasingly prominent feature of contemporary Japanese literature. These works\, often referred to in both commercial publishing and research as “border-crossing literature\,” are varied in subject and style\, but are loosely connected through a shared concern with the relationship between language and the self. This lecture will consider the framework that has been used to discuss border-crossing works in the broader context of Japanese literature\, as well as how that framework is changing as the field continues to grow and diversify.\n \n Gregory Khezrnejat is an Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Literature at the Hosei University Faculty of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies. His research is focused on transnational elements of modern and contemporary Japanese literature as well as second-language authorship. In 2021\, his debut novel *Kamogawa Runner* was awarded the Kyoto Literature Award. His most recent work\, *Kaikonchi*\, was published in the November 2022 issue of the literary journal *Gunzō*.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Starting Your Authorship Journey
DESCRIPTION:\nPublication is one of the essential methods a scholar uses to disseminate their work\, but many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows have little or no prior experience with authorship. In this workshop\, we will share best practices for scholarly authorship\, provide an overview of the phases of authorship\, and discuss the questions that often arise in the publication process. Given that graduate students and postdoctoral fellows often co-author with mentors and peers\, we will also share resources for discussing co-authorship with others. The focus will be on scholarly publication rather than other forms of publication\, such as fiction writing\, creative writing\, etc. You will hear from staff experts and faculty leaders\, including associate deans and graduate chairs:\n\nJacqueline Jeruss\, professor of surgery and the director of the University of Michigan Breast Care Center\nDavid Sept\, Rackham associate dean of physical sciences and engineering and professor of biomedical engineering\nMark Dincecco\, associate professor and graduate chair of political science\nArthur Verhoogt\, Rackham associate dean of humanities and arts and professor of classics\n\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/NkMVk.\n\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aerospace Chairs Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Sarah H.Q. Li \nPh.D. Candidate\, University of Washington\n\nJoin in FXB or on Zoom at https://umich.zoom.us/j/98754209693\n\nAbstract:\nAs the scale of autonomous operation grows in aerospace\, an individual aircraft or spacecraft's autonomous performance will be crucially impacted by the competition for resources and the interaction uncertainty between vehicles. Combining Markov decision process\, game theory\, and optimization\, my research aims to intelligently coordinate multi-vehicle trajectory planning. In this talk\, I will introduce the Markov decision process congestion game to resolve congestion in air traffic management and ride-hail. Next\, building on robust dynamic programming\, I will analyze how uncoordinated vehicle interactions impact the learning dynamics of an individual vehicle\, and derive Hausdorff distance convergence results for diverging value iteration. I will end by discussing some upcoming challenges in aerospace and my approaches to tackling them.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nSarah H.Q. Li is a Ph.D. candidate in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering at the University of Washington and has received her B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of British Columbia. Her research combines game theory\, stochastic control\, and optimization to enable large-scale autonomous interactions in disruption-prone environments such as urban air traffic and orbital spaces. She is a 2020 Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellow and a 2022 UW Aero&Astro Condit Fellow.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: Mechanisms of behavioral evolution: lessons from poison frogs
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nResearch in our lab asks how nervous systems can be both strikingly flexible and remarkably robust\, and how these phenomena simultaneously give rise to widespread similarities and incredible diversity in behavior. We use integrative approaches to address these questions across levels of biological organization and timescales\, using charismatic frogs as a model system. The talk will provide a conceptual framework as well as data-driven background for ongoing projects in the lab\, exploring mechanisms of inter- and intra-specific variation in parental behavior and juvenile aggression in poison frogs. \n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Making the Most of your Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Presentation description: Strong presentation skills are a key to success for researchers and other professionals alike\, yet many speakers are at a loss to tackle the task. Systematic as they usually are in their work\, they go at it intuitively or haphazardly\, with much good will but seldom with an effective outcome. This lecture proposes a systematic way to prepare and deliver an oral presentation: it covers structure\, slides\, and delivery\, as well as stage fright.\n\nAs an engineer (Louvain) and Ph.D. in applied physics (Stanford)\, Jean-luc Doumont is acclaimed worldwide for his no-nonsense approach\, his highly applicable\, often life-changing recommendations on a wide range of topics\, and Trees\, maps\, and theorems\, his book about “effective communication for rational minds.” For additional information\, visit www.principiae.be.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology Seminar: An Arithmetic Purely Topological Classification of Surfaces
DESCRIPTION:There are classical undecidable problems in topology\, such as deciding whether two manifolds are homeomorphic. These problems require the manifold to be presented as a simplicial complex (a finite object). However\, not all manifolds are triangulable. I will describe an approach where the manifold is instead presented as the completion of a countable metric space. So far\, these methods have only been applied to surfaces. The main result here is that given a metric space which is homeomorphic to a surface\, we can construct an atlas and triangulation\, and hence obtain the standard classification of surfaces\, in an arithmetic way. (I will explain in my talk what arithmetic means here\, but one should take it to mean \"not too complicated\".)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Dissecting a post-translational modification code in cardiac reprogramming
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCell fate conversion is associated with extensive epigenetic and post translational modifications (PTMs) and architectural changes of sub-organelles and organelles\, yet how these events are interconnected remains unknown. We report here the identification of a phosphorylation code in 14-3-3 binding motifs (PC14-3-3) that greatly stimulates induced cardiomyocyte (iCM) formation from fibroblasts. PC14-3-3 was identified in pivotal functional proteins for iCM reprogramming\, including transcription factors and epigenetic factors. Akt1 kinase and PP2A phosphatase were a key writer and eraser of the PC14-3-3 code\, respectively. PC14-3-3 activation induces iCM formation with the presence of only Tbx5. In contrast\, PC14-3-3 inhibition by mutagenesis or inhibitor-mediated code removal abolished reprogramming. We discovered that key PC14-3-3 embedded factors\, such as Hdac4\, Mef2c\, Nrip1\, and Foxo1\, formed Hdac4 organized inhibitory nuclear condensates. Notably\, PC14-3-3 activation disrupted Hdac4 condensates to promote cardiac gene expression. Our study suggests that sub-organelle dynamics regulated by a post-translational modification code could be a general mechanism for stimulating cell reprogramming and organ regeneration.\n\nBio:\nDr. Zhong Wang is an Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery\, at the University of Michigan Medical School. The long-term goal of the Wang laboratory is to develop heart therapies to effectively prolong and improve the life of patients with cardiovascular disease. The Wang laboratory has made significant progress in four research directions. One research direction is to define the epigenetic mechanism mediated by ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling in cardiac progenitor specification and differentiation. Direction two is to define essential cross-talks between energy metabolism and epigenetics in heart repair and regeneration. Direction three is to identify epigenetic and post-translational modification mechanism and related molecules in stimulating reprogramming of fibroblasts into cardiomyocytes for heart regeneration. And direction four is to explore novel strategies combining optimal cardiovascular cell types and bioengineering/biomaterials for heart cell therapy.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:CAS Workshop | Negotiating “Ambiguous Race”: Hierarchies of Citizenship and Belonging in the Empires of the Ancient Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://umich.zoom.us/j/93701950330\n\nIn the second book of the Annals\, the Roman historian Tacitus describes the Armenians as an ambigua gens - an “ambiguous race.” According to Tacitus\, not only did Armenia defy definition\, but its volatile political history between Rome and Persia reflected the inherent ambiguity of the Armenian gens. Neither Roman nor Persian\, Greek nor barbarian\, Armenia simply did not fit into one of the established hierarchies the Romans used to order their world and to situate their subjects within the existing hierarchies of their empire.\n \n By drawing the experiences of Armenians into dialogue with other minoritized populations in the Roman empire\, Sasanian Persia\, and other empires of the Mediterranean\, this workshop explores how hierarchies of citizenship\, race\, and belonging functioned as technologies of imperial rule across a variety of case studies. In particular\, it seeks to contribute to critical conversations on the study of race in the ancient and late ancient Mediterranean\, thereby shedding light on the ways in which imperial subjects fashioned their individual and communal subjectivities both diachronically and synchronically.\n \n How\, then\, might the “ambiguity” of the Armenian ambigua gens illuminate not only the experiences of empire\, but also the ontology of empires themselves in the premodern Mediterranean? How did imperial hierarchies of citizenship and belonging shape daily life at the center and on the periphery? And how did imperial subjects engage with\, manipulate\, or even reject these imperial hierarchies in order to navigate their place in their local and supra-local imperial contexts? This workshop brings together scholars from multiple academic disciplines to reconsider the dynamics of imperialism and to propose new historical paradigms to decenter\, decolonize\, and deconstruct the historiography of empires in the premodern Mediterranean.\n\nIf you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://umich.zoom.us/j/93701950330\n\nFebruary 23nd | Weiser Hall 555\n\n4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Keynote Address\nDr. Dan-el Padilla Peralta\, Princeton University\nRacialization in the Roman Empire: Dispositions and Affects\n\nFebruary 24rd | Weiser Hall 555\n\n9:00 am - 10:45 am\n\nPanel I: Whence Ambiguity?: Imperial Hierarchies and the Experiences of Empire\nRespondent: Aileen Das\, University of Michigan\n\nCliff Ando\, University of Chicago\n\"Rome and the Peoples Without Name\"\n\nJimmy Wolfe\, University of Michigan\n\"An Ambiguous Race: Armenian and Assyrian Identities in Roman and\nAmerican Imperialism\"\n\n10:45 am - 11:00 am Break\n\n11:00 am - 12:30 pm\n\nPanel II: Racialized Paradigms and Minoritized Populations in the Ancient and Medieval Middle East\nRespondent: Katherine Davis\, University of Michigan\n\nJessie DeGrado\, University of Michigan\n\"Ancient Alterity\, Modern Racialization: Language\, Culture\, and the Construction of the Neo-Assyrian Empire\"\n\nKayla Dang\, St. Louis University\n\"The Entangled Eran: Ethnicity\, Religion\, and Race in Iranian Studies\"\n\n12:30 pm - 1:30 pm Lunch\n\n1:30 pm - 3:00 pm\n\nPanel III: Visual Subjects: Art and Identity in Byzantium\nRespondent: Bryan Miller\, University of Michigan\n\nParoma Chatterjee\, University of Michigan\n\"Image-Breaking as Otherness in Byzantium: Business as Usual?\"\n\nChristina Maranci\, Harvard University\n\"Breaking Down Byzantium with Nerses III Catholicos (c.641 - c.661)\"\n\n This workshop is organized by James Wolfe\, 2022-23 Manoogian Postdoctoral Fellow (Department of History\, U-M) and Michael Pifer (Department of Middle East Studies\, U-M)\n\nThis event is cosponsored by the U-M Departments of Classical Studies and Middle East Studies and the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. These areas of expertise inform his research and teaching interests\, which\, broadly sketched\, are affective labor\, popular culture\, urban spaces and temporal flows\, and the nexus between sports and science and technology. He currently is a postdoctoral research fellow at The Humanities and Technoscience Lab at Purdue University.\n\nLida Zeitlin-Wu is a scholar of screen-based media and visual culture whose research focuses on the commodification and quantification of sensory experience under global techno-capitalism. Her current book project\, “Seeing by Numbers\,” traces how color systems—diagrams and models that attempt to encompass the full range of human color vision—came to play a key role in engineering perception over the course of the 20th century. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan focusing on DISCO’s curriculum goals.\n\nColeman Collins is an interdisciplinary artist and writer who explores the ways that small\, iterative processes can have outsized effects over time. His work often identifies technological developments and relationships of debt and obligation as the modes through which these processes are enacted. He lives in New York\, where he is currently serving as the inaugural DISCO Network Artist-in-Residence at Stony Brook University’s Future Histories Studio.\n\nCART will be provided. To attend virtually\, please register at the following link:https://bit.ly/3imtMBp\n\nIf you have any questions or need to request accommodations\, please email Eric Mancini\, the DSI Operations Coordinator at dsi-administration@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Presentation:MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Pei-Hsun Huang
DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Simulation for the Design of Sodium Heat Pipes bundle Test Facility for the Application of Microreactors*\n\nThe 20 MW Special Purpose Reactor (SPR) is a heat pipe cooled microreactor that designed for electricity production in remote locations where reliable power grids are not always available. The key to SPR is the alkali metal heat pipes\, which offer entirely passive operation capacity with high mobility. Prior to deployment\, safety analysis with postulated accident scenarios is required for the licensing of SPR. To this regard\, a sufficiently accurate model is crucial to predict the behavior of heat pipes\, and high-resolution data is needed for the safety analysis of SPR. However\, the current existing heat pipe models are either oversimplified or unpractical expensive in view of the difficulty of the simulation with the wick structure and two-phase flow in the heat pipe. Therefore\, high fidelity experimental data is required for model verification in the high temperature heat pipe bundle system. The Michigan Sodium Heat Pipe bundle test facility which serves as a scale-down test facility using ten sodium heat pipes with a triangular array\, was utilized to verify the model for the licensing of SPR. In the talk\, the feasibility analysis using Computer Aided Engineering and Computational Fluid Dynamics for the design of the test facility was addressed.

SUMMARY:Presentation:MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Shirlyn Wang
DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Modeling CTL-mediated Tumor Cell Death Mechanisms and the Activity of Immune Checkpoints in Immunotherapy*\n\nImmunotherapy has dramatically transformed the cancer treatment landscape. Of the variety of types of immunotherapies available\, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs)\, which block inhibitory signals from tumor cells and reinvigorate killing activities of immune cells\, have gained the spotlight. Although ICIs have shown promising results for some patients\, the low response rates in many cancers highlight the challenges of using immune checkpoint blockade as an effective treatment. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) execute their cell-killing function via two distinct mechanisms. The first process is fast-acting and perforin/granzyme-mediated\, and the second is a slower\, Fas ligand (FasL)-driven killing mechanism. There is also evidence suggesting that the preferred killing mechanism by CTLs depends on the antigenicity of tumor cells. To determine the key factors affecting responses to checkpoint blockade therapy\, we constructed an ordinary differential equation model describing in vivo tumor-immune dynamics in the presence of active or blocked PD-1/PDL1 immune checkpoint. Specifically\, we analyzed which aspects of the tumor-immune landscape affect the response to ICIs with endpoints of tumor size and composition in the short and long term. By generating a virtual cohort with heterogeneous tumor and immune attributes\, we also simulated the therapeutic outcomes of immune checkpoint blockade in a largely diverse population. In this way\, we identified key tumor and immune characteristics that are associated with tumor elimination\, dormancy and escape. This talk will also shed light on which fraction of a population potentially responds well to ICIs and ways to enhance therapeutic outcomes with combination therapy.

SUMMARY:Other:Shigaraki: Contemporary Artists on an Ancient Tradition – Zoom Gallery Talk hosted by Joan B Mirviss LTD
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_nNCOZ1X4ThKQJEeN2HtfVw.\n \nKnown for its distinctive clay and beautiful natural ash glazes\, Shigaraki ware is one of Japan’s celebrated ceramic traditions. As one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kiln sites\, Shigaraki has long produced functional vessels with a characteristic rustic appearance in warm\, earthy tones. This enormously appealing tradition found a new audience with American artists and collectors in the past few decades\, thereby expanding our idea of Shigaraki-yaki’s possibilities. Curator Natsu Oyobe shares this remarkable crossover story\, which is the subject of her current exhibition\, “Clay as Soft Power.” She will be joined by two featured artists who will offer key insights into their process of working in this fascinating medium: Shiga-based Ōtani Shirō\, a leader in wood-fired ceramics and designated an Intangible Cultural Asset\, and American artist Peter Callas\, whose originality has pushed the field in new directions and has been twice awarded the Pollock-Krasner Fellowship. Together\, they provide an extraordinarily modern view of Shigaraki ware in the 21st century. \n \nEminent ceramics scholar Louise Cort\, who wrote the book on the subject\, will provide additional unique insights drawn from her long study of and experience in the field.   Panelists: Peter Callas\, artist Ōtani Shiro\, artist Natsu Oyobe\, Curator of Asian Art\, UMMA and with Louise Cort\, Curator Emerita of Ceramics\, Freer | Sackler\, Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, DC moderated by Joan Mirviss\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, the Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative Fund\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, and the U-M Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation\, James M. Trapp\, Nancy and Joe Keithley\, and the William C. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:[Black History Month] Black & Proud: Our Experience As Graduate Students
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a Black student at UM? Join us in welcoming Cescily Barnes\, Brandon Bond\, Charles Phillips\, Karina Forsythe\, and Onyinye Nwankwo as they share their own journey’s navigating education. \n\nThe purpose of this event is to showcase the personal journeys Black students have taken to get to where they are today in their academic programs. This event will provide the ups and downs of being a student of color navigating the world of higher education and provide insight as to how we can advocate for systemic change and equitable\, accessible\, education. This event is sponsored by Students of Color of Rackham (SCOR) and Rackham Student Government (RSG).Moderator: Shana D. Littleton is a 3rd year Ph.D. candidate in the Clinical Pharmacy and Translational Sciences Program at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. Her research aims to distinguish between genetic and social factors that play a role in the racial disparity of treatment outcomes in heart failure patients. Shana received her bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign. Since an undergraduate student\, she has served as a leader in her communities including being vice president of the student organization Her Essence. This group worked to empower and promote the professional advancement of women. Now\, at the University of Michigan\, Shana is the president of Students of Color Of Rackham (SCOR). SCOR hosts a wide range of events geared towards networking\, professionalism\, research\, activism\, volunteer service and social needs of minoritized graduate students. This group helps to create community and foster relationships among students across the different graduate and professional schools at University of Michigan. Shana aspires to expand her work in the field of precision medicine by using the latest tools\, such as genetic screenings\, to advance care and address racial health disparities facing communities of color. Knowing that biomedical research often lacks representation from underserved and underrepresented communities\, she hopes to use aspects of social and genetic research to implement precision health for these individuals.Panelists: Cescily Barnes is a native Detroiter. She completed her BS at UMichigan and is currently a MPH in Health Behavior & Health Education student. She is currently the president of Public Health Students of African Descent (PHSAD)\, a board member of Future Leaders of Focus HOPE\, a fellow of New Leaders Council (NLC)\, a GSI for the Department of Women and Gender Studies\, and former project manager of the Gender Consciousness Project. She believes that several systemic barriers impede children's access to education from the moment they are born. The lack of access to quality education for Black children is a health disparity that must be addressed as a public health crisis. For Black children to have access to equal opportunities and resources for advancement as a generation\, the education system must be completely transformed to eliminate structural inequalities.\n\nBrandon Bond\, MPH\, LLMSW-Macro\, is a Mental Health & Well-Being Student Advocate Consultant at the University of Michigan where he is responsible for assessing the needs of students\, advocating for systemic-level changes\, and implementing solutions that produce health-promoting environments. Brandon is a first-generation graduate of the University of Michigan. He received a Master of Public Health in Health Behavior & Health Education with an Injury Science focus and a double concentration in Global Social Work Practice and Management & Leadership with a Trauma-Informed Practice focus for his Master of Social Work. He also did his undergraduate degree at UM and double majored in Biopsychology\, Cognition\, Neuroscience and International Studies: Global Environment and Health with a Community Action Social Change minor. His research foci include the impact that cultural conceptions of mental health have on one’s health-seeking behavior\; DEI/culturally tailored integrative health interventions and LGBTQ+ mental health within African nations. Brandon has worked on initiatives to support the 2SLGBTQ+ community\, advance public safety reform\, and create and facilitate training and programs for BIPOC empowerment. Outside of the university setting\, Brandon is a Human Rights Commissioner for the City of Ann Arbor’s Human Rights Commission and on the Board of Directors for the suicide prevention non-profit\, Garrett's Space.\n\nKarina Forsythe is a first-generation doctoral student from Detroit. Currently\, a first year in the Combined Program for Education and Psychology\, Karina completed her Bachelor's in Elementary Education (Mathematics) from U of M in 2020. During which\, she founded Curl Talk @ Umich. In her time away from Ann Arbor\, Karina taught 5th grade in a suburb of Chicago. Currently\, Karina is co-founder/president of the Black Graduate Student Association\, a member of the Black Student Psychological Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc. Karina’s research interests seek to understand how Black identity\, belonging within mathematics classrooms and trauma responses to anti-Black violence impact the emotional and academic wellbeing of elementary-aged Black students in white spaces. Given this interest\, Karina believes that holding schools and teachers accountable for uplifting Black students is the influential change needed to positively impact Black children's educational outcomes.\n\nOnyinye Nwankwo is from Enugu\, Nigeria. Currently\, a second-year PhD in Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLaSP) candidate\, Onyinye graduated from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka\, Nigeria. On campus\, she is the DEI-Chair for GUStO\, Treasurer for GRIN\, and Treasurer for GSBES. She believes that access to education is a crucial aspect of every child's development and has a significant impact on their future prospects. For Black children and young adults\, access to quality education has historically been limited due to systemic racism and discrimination. These inequities have resulted in disparities in educational outcomes\, with Black students being more likely to attend under-resourced schools\, receive lower quality instruction\, and face higher rates of suspension and expulsion. Despite some progress in recent years\, the achievement gap between Black and white students remains persistent and significant. To address this issue\, it is important for policymakers and educators to prioritize equity in education and provide equal access to quality educational opportunities for all students\, regardless of race. Solutions may involve increased funding for under-resourced schools\, providing teachers with professional development to support culturally responsive teaching\, and addressing systemic biases in the education system. Ultimately\, ensuring that Black children and young adults have access to quality education is crucial for promoting social and economic mobility and creating a more equitable society.\n\nCharles Phillips\, aka “Chaz” was born and raised just outside of Dallas\, Texas. Chaz is currently a 1st year Educational Studies Ph.D. Student in the School of Education. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Mathematics as a proud graduate of Morehouse College\, a Historically Black College or University. As a secondary mathematics teacher in the US and around the world\, he has traveled to over 70 different countries. He has taught in formal and informal educational institutions for over 20 years. Previously\, Chaz led a Black Lives Matter and Roma Rights protest in Bulgaria. He has also developed and led professional developments in how teachers can support students while they bring their full lives into the classroom and how to make new technology less disruptive in your classroom. Chaz has also developed and implemented Black History Month programs in schools located in Bulgaria and South Korea. Currently\, he serves as the Political Action Chair of SCOR\, a member of the School of Education’s dije Student Advisory Board\, the Outreach Chair of the newly created Black Graduate Student Association\, and last but certainly not least\, he is a member of the oldest\, boldest\, and coldest fraternity in the world\, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity\, Incorporated. Chaz believes Black children’s/young adults’ access to education can be looked at how resources are cultivated and allocated in their school/district/state. Using the taxes from the local neighborhood limits programs that prepare students for post-secondary schooling\, tutoring\, and exposure to the careers students can develop from the degrees they earn. These are just some of the opportunities that many miss out on because we are in an educational system that prioritizes a score on a test than actually aiding students to develop and learn as they see fit.

SUMMARY:Performance:Rochelle Clark & The Familiars
DESCRIPTION:Raw\, honest songwriting from Michigan \n\nA native of Michigan\, Rochelle Clark writes music that has been described as raw\, honest\, and beautifully vulnerable. She writes and sings about real life\, joy\, struggle and human tragedy – you can’t help but feel for the characters in her songs. Leaning heavily on personal experience\, she connects on an intimate level that resonates with her audience. As one half of the acclaimed Americana duo The Potters Field\, Rochelle has offered powerful vocals that have been captivating audiences in Michigan and throughout the Midwest for years. Drawing on her roots in folk\, Americana\, and country\, Rochelle has found a sound that is uniquely her own. In April 2019 she released her first single as a solo artist\, “Jericho\,” and she’s continuing to explore her voice as a solo songwriter. Joining Rochelle will be a band of exceptional musicians (affectionately dubbed The Familiars) who include Jason Dennie\, Keith Bilick\, and John Sperendi.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3778/3779 for more detail.
