SUMMARY:Exhibition:Select Works By James Charles Morris
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\, Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the artistic community.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:CAS Workshop | Negotiating “Ambiguous Race”: Hierarchies of Citizenship and Belonging in the Empires of the Ancient Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://umich.zoom.us/j/93701950330\n\nIn the second book of the Annals\, the Roman historian Tacitus describes the Armenians as an ambigua gens - an “ambiguous race.” According to Tacitus\, not only did Armenia defy definition\, but its volatile political history between Rome and Persia reflected the inherent ambiguity of the Armenian gens. Neither Roman nor Persian\, Greek nor barbarian\, Armenia simply did not fit into one of the established hierarchies the Romans used to order their world and to situate their subjects within the existing hierarchies of their empire.\n \n By drawing the experiences of Armenians into dialogue with other minoritized populations in the Roman empire\, Sasanian Persia\, and other empires of the Mediterranean\, this workshop explores how hierarchies of citizenship\, race\, and belonging functioned as technologies of imperial rule across a variety of case studies. In particular\, it seeks to contribute to critical conversations on the study of race in the ancient and late ancient Mediterranean\, thereby shedding light on the ways in which imperial subjects fashioned their individual and communal subjectivities both diachronically and synchronically.\n \n How\, then\, might the “ambiguity” of the Armenian ambigua gens illuminate not only the experiences of empire\, but also the ontology of empires themselves in the premodern Mediterranean? How did imperial hierarchies of citizenship and belonging shape daily life at the center and on the periphery? And how did imperial subjects engage with\, manipulate\, or even reject these imperial hierarchies in order to navigate their place in their local and supra-local imperial contexts? This workshop brings together scholars from multiple academic disciplines to reconsider the dynamics of imperialism and to propose new historical paradigms to decenter\, decolonize\, and deconstruct the historiography of empires in the premodern Mediterranean.\n\nIf you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://umich.zoom.us/j/93701950330\n\nFebruary 23nd | Weiser Hall 555\n\n4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Keynote Address\nDr. Dan-el Padilla Peralta\, Princeton University\nRacialization in the Roman Empire: Dispositions and Affects\n\nFebruary 24rd | Weiser Hall 555\n\n9:00 am - 10:45 am\n\nPanel I: Whence Ambiguity?: Imperial Hierarchies and the Experiences of Empire\nRespondent: Aileen Das\, University of Michigan\n\nCliff Ando\, University of Chicago\n\"Rome and the Peoples Without Name\"\n\nJimmy Wolfe\, University of Michigan\n\"An Ambiguous Race: Armenian and Assyrian Identities in Roman and\nAmerican Imperialism\"\n\n10:45 am - 11:00 am Break\n\n11:00 am - 12:30 pm\n\nPanel II: Racialized Paradigms and Minoritized Populations in the Ancient and Medieval Middle East\nRespondent: Katherine Davis\, University of Michigan\n\nJessie DeGrado\, University of Michigan\n\"Ancient Alterity\, Modern Racialization: Language\, Culture\, and the Construction of the Neo-Assyrian Empire\"\n\nKayla Dang\, St. Louis University\n\"The Entangled Eran: Ethnicity\, Religion\, and Race in Iranian Studies\"\n\n12:30 pm - 1:30 pm Lunch\n\n1:30 pm - 3:00 pm\n\nPanel III: Visual Subjects: Art and Identity in Byzantium\nRespondent: Bryan Miller\, University of Michigan\n\nParoma Chatterjee\, University of Michigan\n\"Image-Breaking as Otherness in Byzantium: Business as Usual?\"\n\nChristina Maranci\, Harvard University\n\"Breaking Down Byzantium with Nerses III Catholicos (c.641 - c.661)\"\n\n This workshop is organized by James Wolfe\, 2022-23 Manoogian Postdoctoral Fellow (Department of History\, U-M) and Michael Pifer (Department of Middle East Studies\, U-M)\n\nThis event is cosponsored by the U-M Departments of Classical Studies and Middle East Studies and the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Future Is With Our People: Sustainability Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster\, or cooking with your dad\, who grew up poor\, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies\, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us\, our communities\, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in. \n\nJoin the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation *With Care*\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990. \n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Marroquin works with youth and communities to decenter dominant narratives and to address displacement and erasure. Her current work explores belonging through histories of student rebellions in Chicago Public Schools from 1968 to 1980. Through research and creative practice\, she aims to recover and re-present histories of Black and brown youth and women’s leadership in the struggle for justice in Chicago. \n\nMarroquin has presented her work at the Kochi Biennale\, the Annual Conference of the American Association of Research Librarians\, University of Maine\, New York Archivist Round Table\, Jane Addams Hull House Museum\, Northwestern University\, DePaul Museum of Art\, on WLPN Lumpen Radio\, Gallery 400\, Hyde Park Art Center and more. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Pleasure: A Craft Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series craft lectures are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in the Robert Hayden Conference Room-- Angell Hall #3222). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact asbates@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nIn this craft lecture\, Rumaan Alam will explore the topic of pleasure. Essentially\, that’s the readers’ ultimate goal and should be part of the writer’s too—a favorite hobbyhorse of his. The lecture will emphasize the idea of prioritizing pleasure\, both the reader’s and your own\, as you work\, and how pleasure should be a part of the larger calculus around everything a writer is doing.\n\nRumaan Alam is an author whose writing explores the beauty and horror of daily existence\, as well as complex ideas about fate and privilege. \n\nAfter his parents moved from Bangladesh in the ‘70s\, Rumaan grew up in the suburbs of Washington D.C. He was an obsessive reader and knew he wanted to be a writer by the time he was 10 years old. After studying English and graduating from Oberlin College\, he has written three novels:* Rich and Pretty\, That Kind of Mother*\, and his latest\, the instant *New York Times* bestseller *Leave the World Behind*. A finalist for the 2020 National Book Award\, *Leave the World Behind* is also being adapted for film with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington in lead roles.\n\nRumaan’s other writing has appeared in *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The New York Times*\, *New York Magazine*\, *Buzzfeed*\, and *The New Republic*\, where he is a contributing editor. He also co-hosts two podcasts for *Slate*.\n\nRumaan lives in New York with his husband and two children.\n\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. The building\, event space\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. A lactation room (Angell Hall #5209)\, reflection room (Haven Hall #1506)\, and gender-inclusive restroom (Angell Hall 5th floor) are available on site. ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request\; please email asbates@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event\, whenever possible\, to allow time to arrange services.\n\nU-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St.\, Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St.\, Ann Arbor). There is limited metered street parking on State Street and South University Avenue. The Forest Avenue Public Parking Structure (650 South Forest Ave.\, Ann Arbor) is five blocks away\, and the parking rate is $1.20 per hour. All of these options include parking spots for individuals with disabilities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion\, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible. \n\nWhen paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive\, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production\, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist. \n\nThere is an additional assumption that those who identify as women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique\, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such. \n\nIn an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions\, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices\, this exhibition brings together women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion\, their other identities (be those related to their race\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, or status as artists)\, and their practices.\n\nParticipating Artists:\nNour Ballout\nYasmine Diaz\nArshia Fatima Haq\nYasmine Kasem\nManal Shoukair\nSaba Taj

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Luay Nakhleh\, Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering\, Rice University
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: Using genome-wide data for phylogenetic inference and analysis has become commonplace in the post-genomic era\, giving rise to the field of phylogenomics. The multispecies coalescent (MSC) model has emerged as the main stochastic process that helps capture the intricate relationship between species trees and gene trees. Combined with models of sequence evolution\, the MSC can be viewed as a generative model of genomic sequence data in the context of a (species) phylogenetic tree. A significant outcome of the use of genome-wide data has been the increasing evidence\, or hypotheses\, of reticulation (e.g.\, hybridization) during the evolution of various groups of eukaryotic species. Reticulate evolutionary histories are best represented as phylogenetic networks\, which extend the tree model to allow for admixtures of genetic material. In this talk\, I will describe the multispecies network coalescent (MSNC) model\, which extends the MSC model so that it operates within the branches of a phylogenetic network. This extended model naturally allows for modeling vertical and horizontal evolutionary processes acting within and across species boundaries. In particular\, it simultaneously accounts for gene tree incongruence across loci due to both hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting. I will then briefly describe a host of methods that we have developed for phylogenetic network inference under the MSNC. The methods differ by the mathematical criterion they employ\, the data they take as input\, as well as the information they infer. I will also discuss practical issue facing phylogenetic network inference in practice. All methods are implemented and publicly available in the\nPhyloNet software package (http://bioinfocs.rice.edu/phylonet).\n\nBIO: Luay Nakhleh is the William and Stephanie Sick Dean of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at Rice University in Houston\, Texas. He received a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science (1996) from the Technion (Israel)\, a master’s degree in Computer\nScience (1998) from Texas A&amp\;M University\, and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science (2004) from The University of Texas in Austin. He conducts research in the areas of bioinformatics and computational biology\, focusing mainly on questions in evolutionary biology and genomics. Luay is a recipient of multiple awards including the Department of Energy CAREER award\, the National Science Foundation CAREER award\, the Sloan luay Fellowship\, and the Guggenheim Fellowship.\nhttps://www.cs.rice.edu/~nakhleh/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"It Takes Two: Conserved bimodal interactions between the coronavirus fusion peptide and calcium ions promote host membrane insertion and viral entry\"
DESCRIPTION:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) necessitates develop of effective therapies against the causative agent\, SARS-CoV-2\, and other pathogenic coronaviruses (CoV) that have yet to emerge. Focusing on the CoV replication cycle\, specifically the entry steps involving membrane fusion\, is an astute choice because of the conservation of the fusion machinery and mechanism across the CoV family. For coronavirus\, entry into a host cell is mediated by a single glycoprotein protruding from its membrane envelope\, called spike (S). Within S\, the region that directly interacts with the membrane is called the fusion peptide\, FP. It is the physico-chemical interactions of the FP with the host membrane that anchors it\, enabling the necessary deformations of the membrane leading to delivery of the viral genome into the cell when a fusion pore opens. Thermodynamic\, kinetic\, and intermolecular interac-tions are useful to understand molecular level FP interactions with the host membrane. This knowledge can be leveraged to stop the spread of infection. Here\, we examine the impact of calcium ions on CoV entry. Using cell infectivity\, biophysical assays\, and spectroscopic methods\, we found that calcium ions stabilize the FP structure during conformational change that then allows its insertion into the host membrane\, resulting in increased lipid ordering in the membrane. This lipid ordering precedes mem-brane fusion and correlates with increased fusion activity and higher levels of infection when calcium in present. As such\, depletion of calcium ions leads to structure and activity changes in the fusion peptide that correlate well with in vitro experiments using calcium-chelating agents to block cell infection. We show calcium channel blockers can block virus infection in lung cells.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LAGS Seminar | Industrial Experience and Technical Discussion on Induced Polarization for Subsurface Characterization
DESCRIPTION:Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95573161835\n\nMeeting ID: 955 7316 1835\nPasscode: 054136\n\nThere has been substantial interest in applying induced polarization phenomena\, which broadly include electrode and membrane polarization\, to characterize organic contamination and biogeochemical environments. The presence of dispersed electronically conductive grains contributes to the electrode polarization\, which arises due to the capacitive charging of the Stern Layer at the conductor-electrolyte interface. On the other hand\, the membrane polarization is driven by spatial inhomogeneity in the ionic transferences\, i.e.\, the proportion of current carried by the cation vs. the anion. Several phenomenological models\, semi-quantitative models\, and models for particular pore shapes have been proposed for understanding induced polarization. Here\, we developed theoretical frameworks to quantitatively explain electrode and membrane polarization based on insights from experiments on model systems. We obtained quantitative agreement between experiment and theory\, not just for characteristic frequencies and amplitudes\, but for the entire spectral shape of the phase angle between electric field and current density.\n\nBiography: Dr. Qiuzi Li obtained BS in physics from Zhejiang University and Ph.D. in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Maryland-College Park. Her graduate research covered four distinct research areas: transport in disordered mesoscopic systems with a primary focus on graphene\, quantum computation\, three-dimensional topological insulators\, and cold dipolar molecules. She is now pursuing a part-time MBA at Rutgers University concentrating on supply chain management and technology commercialization and entrepreneurship. Qiuzi joined ExxonMobil in 2013. Her primary research centers on the development of new methods for subsurface characterizations. Along the way\, she invented a magneto-seismic method for detecting hydrocarbons and developed a fundamental understanding of the induced polarization exploration method. She has also developed a quantitative theory for modeling fluid flow effects on seismic\, transport mechanisms in unconventional reservoir rocks\, and oil recovery for mixed macro-and micro-pore carbonate reservoirs. Currently she leads the geological carbon storage program. In addition\, Qiuzi served on the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics of American Physical Society. She also served as Chair of the New Professional Program group and the President of Asian Connection for Excellence (an Employee Resource Group at ExxonMobil). She recently awarded 2022 Distinguished Lectureship on Application of Physics by the American Physical Society.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:AIM Seminar: Membrane flutter in inviscid fluid flow
DESCRIPTION:We develop different models to study the flutter of membranes (of zero bending rigidity) with vortex-sheet wakes in two- and three-dimensional inviscid flows. For 2D flows\, we use a nonlinear\, time-stepping method to study large-amplitude dynamics in the space of three dimensionless parameters: membrane pretension\, mass density\, and stretching rigidity. With a linearized version of the membrane-vortex-sheet model we also investigate the instability of a membrane by solving a nonlinear eigenvalue problem iteratively\, for three boundary conditions---both ends fixed\, one end fixed and one free\, and both free. We further consider a simple physical setup: a membrane held by tethers with hinged ends\, that interpolates between the fixed--fixed and free--free cases. We additionally study an infinite membrane model mounted on a periodic array of Hookean springs. This model allows us to compute asymptotic scaling laws for how the frequencies\, growth rates\, and eigenmodes depend on membrane pretension and mass density. Finally\, we develop a nonlinear model and computational method to study large-amplitude membrane flutter in 3D inviscid flow for 12 different boundary conditions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MMP Speaker Event - Morality is skin deep: Linking aesthetic and moral cognition in the brain.
DESCRIPTION:Title: Morality is skin deep: Linking aesthetic and moral cognition in the brain.\n\nAbstract: Facial beauty is linked to a “beauty-is-good” stereotype\, whereby people expect positive character traits in people with attractive faces. We find evidence for a complementary “anomalous-is-bad” stereotype\, which facilitates negative biases against people with visible facial differences like scars and palsies. This evidence is found at multiple levels of organization: At the level of the brain\, people show a specific neural response to anomalous faces in the amygdala. At the level of attitudes\, people make negative character evaluations about individuals with facial anomalies\, are explicitly biased against them as a group\, and misjudge their expressions of facial affect to be more negative than they actually are. These negative attitudinal biases are detectable regardless of the kind of facial anomaly. At the level of behavior\, less prosociality is detected towards individuals with visible facial differences compared to typical faces in people with the most to give. Across levels of organization\, the specific amygdala response to facial anomalies is associated with stronger just-world beliefs (i.e.\, people get what they deserve)\, less trait empathic concern\, and less prosociality elicited by anomalous faces. Data collected from the Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania suggests the anomalous-is-bad stereotype is learned\, rather than emerging from an adaptive aversion to pathogen threat. In a recent study\, we tested the hypothesis that implicit biases towards people with visible facial differences can be unlearned through routine exposure to faces bearing such anomalous features. Participants’ implicit biases were measured before and after they completed an exposure intervention\, which was delivered remotely using a custom mobile phone application. Our findings suggest that exposure to people with facial anomalies\, especially exposure that elicits perspective taking\, can reduce negative biases towards them in a targeted fashion.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Cohomologies of K3 surfaces in characteristic p > 0
DESCRIPTION:Continuing from last week’s talk by Saket\, the seminar will take a close look at K3 surfaces (but no knowledge from last week’s talk will be assumed). K3 surfaces enjoy some nice cohomological properties and relatively simple deformation theories even in the positive characteristic setting. There are moreover multiple Torelli theorems that are known in this setting\, which may be surprising since characteristic 0 Torelli theorems are usually phrased in terms of Hodge theory. In one version\, called crystalline Torelli theorem\, the use of Hodge structures is replaced by their rough characteristic p analogue--F-crystals which arise from crystalline cohomology. The current plan of the talk is to sketch some general landscape of K3 surfaces and their cohomologies in positive characteristic\, without getting into Torelli theorems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR - Analysis on Bruhat-Tits buildings
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss how the representation theory of $PGL(d\, F)$ assists in analyzing functions and operators on the associated Bruhat-Tits building (or quotients thereof). There is a certain natural algebra of functions on the group called the spherical Hecke algebra whose action on the building has a nice geometric interpretation and whose representations parametrize so-called ``spherical representations'' of $PGL(d\, F)$. The spherical Hecke algebra acting on the building has certain particularly nice eigenfunctions called spherical functions which allow one to define a sort of ``Fourier transform'' on the building. In the case of $PGL(2\, F)$\, these topics are closely related to analyzing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the adjacency operator on regular graphs/the infinite regular tree. This talk is somewhat of a continuation of last week's talk\, but it will be fairly independent from that talk and it's not necessary to have attended that talk to follow this one.

Please make your show selection carefully as all sales are final - refunds / exchanges are not available. \n\nFriday\, Feb 24\, 8:00 p.m. | Liars have been around since the snake first hit it off with Eve. By some accounts\, contests celebrating liars have been around since the 15th century\, but these accounts may be apocryphal. Today\, liars contests are held in countries all around the globe\, and The Ark is joining the fray with its First Annual Liars contest\, which is part of the new and expanded 36th Annual Storytelling Festival. The event will feature six of the best liars in the region\, each telling a ten-minute story and competing for highly valuable bragging rights\, a crisp $100 bill\, and a fabulous trophy for the winner! Each of our distinguished celebrity judges has a special relationship to the fine art of prevarication. \n\nThe Liars | Larry Castleberry\, Jennifer Otto\, Rich Swanson\, Jeff Doyle\, Genot Picor\, Mike Cox\n\nThe Judges | Kathleen Daniels/Married to Jeff Daniels\, a man who makes his living by pretending to be other people\; Karl Fink/As a retired District Court judge\, he spent most of his life listening to liars … and not just the attorneys\; Christopher Taylor/Mayor of Ann Arbor\, a politician—need we say more?\n\nMC for the event | Amir Baghdadchi\n---\nSaturday\, Feb 25\, 8:00 p.m. | Saturday brings storytellers Bill Harley\, Sheila Arnold\, and Steve Daut. \n\nBill Harley is a songwriter and storyteller whose commentaries have been featured on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. He's equally at home performing for adults and for families\, and a refreshing breath of fantasy is just around the corner in everything he does. Tonight Bill performs a special one-man show\, appearing in character as a figure from a story by wilderness advocate John Muir\, called “Stickeen.” One of the great tales of the American wilderness\, the story recounts Muir’s adventures in Alaska with a brave\, curious little dog. The show will be followed by a Q&A.\n\nSheila Arnold brings stories\, historic individuals\, new ideas\, new perspectives and old knowledge to schools\, libraries\, professional organizations\, museums and churches. And Steve Daut is well known to Michigan audiences\; he has adapted stories of Mark Twain to the storytelling medium.\n---\nSunday\, Feb 26\, 1:00 p.m. | Sunday’s matinee show will feature tellers from the Saturday program in a show for families.
