Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. This presentation will share results from an in-lake mesocosm experiment conducted at the International Institute for Sustainable Development\u00e2\u0080\u0099s Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) to discuss the fate of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems. Different concentrations of a mixture of polyethylene, polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate were added to nine 10-m diameter x 2-m deep limnocorrals as part of a ten-week experiment to measure the fate and effects of microplastics. The fate of the microplastics influences exposure in biota \u00e2\u0080\u0093 relevant to risk. In addition to discussing the work at IISD-ELA, this presentation will share results from meta-analyses, and field and lab experiments to discuss the fate of microplastics in food webs and the physical and chemical effects of different types of microplastics across multiple levels of biological organization.
