SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Select Works By James Charles Morris
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\, Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the artistic community.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. DESCRIPTION:Write-Together sessions provide structure\, accountability\, and support for graduate writers working on writing at any stage\, from papers to theses to journal articles to dissertations and more. For each of these sessions\, participants can meet in-person or access a Zoom link and a shared Google document that will serve as a communal virtual space. Students will be invited to post pre-writing goals and post-writing reflections in the document. Writers can also schedule a 10-minute Zoom meeting with Sweetland faculty during each session to discuss writing questions. We will also provide weekly writing strategies to habituate students to best writing practices.\n\nSupported by the Rackham Graduate School and the Sweetland Center for Writing.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PSC Brownbag Series: The effect of institutional gaps between cohabitation and marriage
DESCRIPTION:The PSC Brown Bag Series runs live and on Zoom this year\, Mondays from 12 to 12:50 p.m.\nPaula Calvo of Arizona State University presents:\n\nThe effect of institutional gaps between cohabitation and marriage\n\nThis paper examines the effects of institutional differences between marriage and non-marital cohabitation―in dimensions such as child custody laws and property division rules upon separation―on household formation\, individual's welfare and child human capital. I first show that\, conditional on observable characteristics\, cohabiting women have higher labor supply and higher separation rates than married women. They also raise children with lower cognitive outcomes. To rationalize these facts\, I model the individuals' life-cycle problem within an equilibrium marriage market framework that features the choice between marriage and cohabitation. I estimate the model on U.S. household data. The results indicate that low-educated cohabiting women receive a lower share of the household's resources than low-educated married women. Moreover\, their children accumulate less human capital compared to those born to low-educated married women\, explained by lower maternal time investments and higher separation rates between cohabiting couples. In counterfactual simulations\, I equalize child custody for married and unmarried parents upon separation. This policy improves the welfare of low-educated cohabiting women. The equilibrium effects are critical for this result: While this policy reduces the welfare of low-educated cohabiting women under the baseline marriage market equilibrium (by weakening their parental rights at separation)\, in the new equilibrium they are compensated with a higher share of the household's resources. This policy also contributes to closing the human capital gap between children born to low-educated cohabiting and married women.\n\nJoin us in person at ISR (Thompson Street) Room 1430.\n\nOr online: Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95418610585?pwd=Z0cvdkF1T0R2cG1lRDEvVmlnbVdlZz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Unusual Animals and Unusual Contexts in the Mongol Empire
DESCRIPTION:The history of human-animal relations has become an important sub-field within the broader field of environmental history\; environmental history in turn has become one of the most important fields within historical investigation today. Histories and travelogues on the Mongol empire mention a number of animals that are either unusual in themselves or found clustered in unusual human-animal contexts. Study of these animals and their contexts thus sheds useful light on the human-animal relations of the Mongol empire.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | The Hubble Tension and Theoretical\, New-Physics Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The Hubble tension persists and continues to raise questions about our current understanding of the Universe. The discrepancy is greatest between two constraints on the current expansion rate of the Universe - one assuming LCDM and observing the early universe\, and another directly measuring H0 in the local universe. I have worked extensively on understanding what this tension may indicate about the dark sector by building theoretical models to resolve this tension\, the most successful being the early dark energy (EDE) scenario. My talk will go over the phenomenological features that allow EDE to successfully resolve the Hubble tension\, challenges that lie ahead in finding the true underlying model of our Universe and how we may pursue cosmological concordance.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Winter Seminar Series: ‘Unfriending’: Polarization and Political Disagreement in Social Networks
DESCRIPTION:‘Unfriending’: Polarization and Political Disagreement in Social Networks\nMonday\, March 6\, 2023 (3:30 PM – 5:00 PM)\n\nYanna Krupnikov\nProfessor of Communication and Media\nFaculty Associate\, Center for Political Studies\nUniversity of Michigan\n\nStories of polarization in the media have often focused on anecdotes about people who have stopped speaking with friends and family due to political differences — e.g. “unfriended” others due to politics. The possibility that politics has shifted long-term individual relationships has broad social implications. Therefore\, we analyze why and when people are most likely to “unfriend.” We argue that political disagreement is often the final step in a general breakdown of a relationship. In other words\, when political disagreements occur\, people are more likely to “unfriend” those whom they found unpleasant prior to the disagreement. Our results come from four national experiments. The first tracks the relative frequency of “unfriending” over political disagreement versus other types of interactions. The second considers whether it is political disagreement specifically that leads to “unfriending.” The final two studies combine these ideas\, tracking the conditions that are most likely to produce “unfriending” in different contexts of political extremity and polarization.\n\nYanna Krupnikov is Professor of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan. Her work focuses on political communication\, in particular attention to news\, political expression and social interactions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Conversations on Europe. Russian Gas and European Supply Chains: Examining the Consequences of the War in Ukraine for Europe’s Energy Policies
DESCRIPTION:After Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th\, the European Union (EU) announced its plans to suspend imports of Russian energy sources definitively\, under its RepowerEU plan. The immediate consequence of the plan is a widespread supply shock to European economies. In this lecture\, Prof. Kang will discuss how EU-Russia economic relations have developed so far and how Russia's aggression over Ukraine changed Europe's geo-economic and political landscape. He will also provide an economic forecast of European countries and the possible impact on developing countries.\n\nYoo-Duk Kang is professor of economics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) in Seoul\, Korea\, where he was previously dean of the language and trade division and editor of the HUFS Press. He teaches undergraduate courses in international economics and trade\, and graduate courses in development economics and EU studies. His main research interests are trade policy\, economic integration\, and comparative studies of economic policies. He is also deeply interested in European studies from an economic perspective. Previously\, Kang worked at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP)\, where he published 40 policy reports about issues related to European economies\, and as an external consultant for the Korean Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Industry and Trade\, participating in implementation and assessment of Korea’s trade agreements. Professor Kang has contributed more than 70 academic articles to journals including the *Journal of European Integration*\, *Journal of Contemporary European Studies*\, *Journal of Economic Integration*\, and *Asian Development Review*. He is co-author and contributor of 30 books about international economics and European studies.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at https://myumi.ch/bR9R6\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Speaker Series. Power\, Responsibility\, and Reliability in the Electrical World
DESCRIPTION:Within contemporary electrification efforts in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) a common policy narrative is that unequal and unreliable grid services are partially the fault of electricity users themselves. SSA residents are often characterized as “thieves\,” “non-payers\,” and “entitled\,” whose behavior culminates in “nontechnical losses” that in turn cripples utilities’ effort to offer them better services. But the link between these so-called problematic users and their problematic systems is rarely empirically justified. \n\nIn this talk\, I turn to the history of electrical power\, reliability\, and responsibility in the first fifty years of US electrification to explore how ideas of delinquents\, nonpayers\, and thieves have evolved in the context of increasing reliability. I ask\, what does the history of these moralized subjects and attendant material conditions – those blamed for breakdowns/those held responsible – reveal about assumptions being made today? \n\nThis research and its implications are part of a broader effort to reflect on the tension between an idealized benchmark for access\, the ever-present connection\, and the kind that might in fact be feasible as access scales up in the context of humanitarianism and environmentalism. The talk explores multiple cycles of service expectations and reliability\, scale-up and expansion\, (non)payment and low investment\, and normalizations and moralizations with framing concepts from STS and postcolonial development.\n\nCo-sponsors: Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\; Program in Science\, Technology & Public Policy\; African Studies Center

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics:A brief introduction to Stanley-Reisner theory
DESCRIPTION:Stanley-Reisner theory provides a link between commutative algebra and combinatorics. We will define simplicial complexes and give the Stanley-Reisner correspondence between square-free monomial ideals in a polynomial ring and simplicial complexes. We will discuss the Alexander dual of simplicial complexes and of square-free monomial ideals. Finally\, we present various criterions for Cohen-Macaulayness of a square-free monomial ideal quotient in terms of combinatorial and geometrical information on the corresponding simplicial complex\, such as shellability\, pureness\, and homology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Governing for environmental justice
DESCRIPTION:Whether efficient public transit\, climate change\, or air and water pollution\, marginalized communities are regularly denied access to healthy environments. Differences in power and political voice create differential impacts of our changing environment—natural and built—on these communities\, compromising access to basic necessities like clean water and breathable air. Legislation to redress these differential impacts requires policymakers to work hand in glove with the communities they represent.\n\nJoin Dr. Abdul El-Sayed - physician\, epidemiologist\, and newly appointed Director of the Wayne County Health\, Human & Veterans Services Department\, and a former Ford School Towsley Policymaker in Residence - for a conversation with policymakers at the intersection of social justice and environmental concerns. Dr. El-Sayed will be joined by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and Michigan Senator Stephanie Chang (MPP/MSW '14) to reflect on their work to address environmental injustice in Michigan and beyond\, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.\n\nAt this event\, the Ford School will also recognize Senator Chang with the prestigious Neil Staebler Distinguished Service Award for her dedication to excellence in public service. Read the announcement here. \n\nRepresentative Rashida Tlaib is currently the Congresswoman for Michigan’s 12th Congressional District\, which includes the city of Detroit and many surrounding communities. She made history in 2008 by becoming the first Muslim woman to ever serve in the Michigan Legislature. \n\nSenator Stephanie Chang is a Ford School alumna and the first Asian American woman to be elected to the Michigan Legislature. Chang worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade before serving two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:A lot of people know Matt Nathanson for his 2007 hit \"Come On Get Higher\,\" but his career has only kept growing since then. He comes to Michigan with a new album\, “Boston Accent\,” whose stripped-down arrangements recall his beginnings as an acoustic troubadour. That’s all to the good for this show—it's not so common to hear him in a club The Ark's size. Matt has a unique sense of humor on stage that can get lost in larger venues\, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him back for the first time since the pandemic began. “I wanted to make a real singer/songwriter record this time. an ‘inspired by Cat Stevens\, Joni Mitchell\, Paul Simon\, Tom Petty kinda record … which is something I've been running away from since ‘Ernst’\,\" Matt says.
