What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\r\n\r\nIn his 45-year career, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland, begun in 1975, continues to the present day. Fishman\u2019s work has been extensively published, exhibited, and collected worldwide, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*, *Life*, *Fortune*, *Newsweek*, *The London Sunday Times*, *The Economist*, and numerous others. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race, spirituality, history, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown, which is evident in his work. \r\n\r\nMorris\u2019 artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother, Dell Pryor, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans, Hugh Grannum, Lester Sloan, Al Loving, Gilda Snowden, Shirley Woodson, Anthony Barboza, and Eric Pryor among others. \r\n\r\nIn 2008, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit), a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \r\n\r\nIn 2019, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage, photo montage, and abstract expressionism. Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race, spirituality, history, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown, which is evident in his work. \r\n\r\nMorris\u2019 artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother, Dell Pryor, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans, Hugh Grannum, Lester Sloan, Al Loving, Gilda Snowden, Shirley Woodson, Anthony Barboza, and Eric Pryor among others. \r\n\r\nIn 2008, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit), a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \r\n\r\nIn 2019, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage, photo montage, and abstract expressionism. I first show that, conditional on observable characteristics, cohabiting women have higher labor supply and higher separation rates than married women. They also raise children with lower cognitive outcomes. To rationalize these facts, I model the individuals' life-cycle problem within an equilibrium marriage market framework that features the choice between marriage and cohabitation. I estimate the model on U.S. household data. The results indicate that low-educated cohabiting women receive a lower share of the household's resources than low-educated married women. Moreover, their children accumulate less human capital compared to those born to low-educated married women, explained by lower maternal time investments and higher separation rates between cohabiting couples. In counterfactual simulations, I equalize child custody for married and unmarried parents upon separation. This policy improves the welfare of low-educated cohabiting women. The equilibrium effects are critical for this result: While this policy reduces the welfare of low-educated cohabiting women under the baseline marriage market equilibrium (by weakening their parental rights at separation), in the new equilibrium they are compensated with a higher share of the household's resources. Therefore, we analyze why and when people are most likely to \u201cunfriend.\u201d We argue that political disagreement is often the final step in a general breakdown of a relationship. In other words, when political disagreements occur, people are more likely to \u201cunfriend\u201d those whom they found unpleasant prior to the disagreement. Our results come from four national experiments. The first tracks the relative frequency of \u201cunfriending\u201d over political disagreement versus other types of interactions. The immediate consequence of the plan is a widespread supply shock to European economies. In this lecture, Prof. Kang will discuss how EU-Russia economic relations have developed so far and how Russia's aggression over Ukraine changed Europe's geo-economic and political landscape. He will also provide an economic forecast of European countries and the possible impact on developing countries.\r\n\r\nYoo-Duk Kang is professor of economics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) in Seoul, Korea, where he was previously dean of the language and trade division and editor of the HUFS Press. He teaches undergraduate courses in international economics and trade, and graduate courses in development economics and EU studies. His main research interests are trade policy, economic integration, and comparative studies of economic policies. He is also deeply interested in European studies from an economic perspective. Previously, Kang worked at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), where he published 40 policy reports about issues related to European economies, and as an external consultant for the Korean Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Industry and Trade, participating in implementation and assessment of Korea\u2019s trade agreements. SSA residents are often characterized as \u201cthieves,\u201d \u201cnon-payers,\u201d and \u201centitled,\u201d whose behavior culminates in \u201cnontechnical losses\u201d that in turn cripples utilities\u2019 effort to offer them better services. But the link between these so-called problematic users and their problematic systems is rarely empirically justified. \r\n\r\nIn this talk, I turn to the history of electrical power, reliability, and responsibility in the first fifty years of US electrification to explore how ideas of delinquents, nonpayers, and thieves have evolved in the context of increasing reliability. I ask, what does the history of these moralized subjects and attendant material conditions \u2013 those blamed for breakdowns\/those held responsible \u2013 reveal about assumptions being made today? \r\n\r\nThis research and its implications are part of a broader effort to reflect on the tension between an idealized benchmark for access, the ever-present connection, and the kind that might in fact be feasible as access scales up in the context of humanitarianism and environmentalism.
