As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. All genocide starts with a destructive ideology and followed afterwards by denial. This talk will re-examine the concepts of genocide ideology and denial\, how they are linked and how they contributed to the killings of Tutsi from 1959 up to 1994. Available literature as well as recent cases will be thoroughly analyzed\, both at local and international level\, to understand different forms and trends of genocide ideology and denial\, with specific emphasis on the Rwandan case.\n\nSponsored by the University of Michigan School of Information Data\, Archives\, and Information Seminar\; African Studies Center\; Museum Studies Program\; Ethics\, Society and Computing\; and Franklin Innovator Residency Fund.\n\nSpeaker bio:\nWith a PhD in education from the University of Geneva\, I have substantial experience working with the United Nations\, international non-governmental organizations\, non-profit organizations\, and governments on projects related to equitable and sustainable education curricula. As the Director General of the Research and Documentation Center on Genocide at the Rwanda National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG)\, I managed and led research projects as well as designed\, implemented\, monitored\, and assessed projects related to the Genocide against the Tutsi. Key projects included the digitization of forty-five million pages and four thousand audio-visual materials from Rwanda’s Gacaca Courts\, the preservation of textiles at the Nyamata genocide memorial site\, the preservation of bodies at the Murambi genocide memorial site\, and the preservation of artifacts in six other national genocide memorial sites in Rwanda. Between 2013 and 2015\, I also participated in a team responsible for designing Rwanda’s new national education curriculum for history and civic education. I am currently a Consultant with the International Labour Organization (ILO) for their Accelerator Lab 8.7 Program\, which provides funding and support to international organizations with innovative solutions to tackle child labor\, forced labor\, and human trafficking. Based on extensive archival research using many newly declassified sources\, *The Peacemaker* is the first book of its kind to offer a comprehensive overview of the Reagan administration’s foreign policy\, including important topics such as its policies in Asia\, the Middle East\, counterterrorism\, and international economics.\n\nFrom the speaker's bio:\n\nWilliam Inboden is executive director and William Powers\, Jr. Chair at the Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas-Austin. He also serves as associate professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs\, distinguished scholar at the Strauss Center for International Security and Law\, and editor-in-chief of the Texas National Security Review. Yet that idea was developed much later than commonly assumed. Debates leading up to the Clayton Act of 1914 form an important episode leading up to that contested development. Professor Paul will discuss her draft chapter\, part of a larger book project\, that considers this episode in the context of surrounding developments in the law\, in economic thought\, and in the organization of economic activity. A less-familiar view of competition and markets (from the modern perspective —one focused on distinguishing between fair and unfair competition—also had an important role in the debates leading to Progressive Era antitrust legislation. This view of markets acknowledges that competition is always channeled in particular qualitative directions—guided by\, among other things\, law—and is also always accompanied by particular\, legally-conditioned forms of economic coordination. This study examines the role of outgroup empathy as a potential driver of support for restrictive voting laws and voter suppression efforts. Evidence from two national surveys indicates that outgroup empathy may boost support for race-based electoral justice\, above and beyond the influence of partisanship\, ideology\, and a host of socio-demographic influences. As predicted\, the effects of group empathy are conditional on political sophistication: Those most likely to be aware that these laws target minority group voters are also those who bring outgroup empathy to bear on their policy views. The findings suggest that group empathy—especially among the most politically sophisticated—can catalyze opposition to restrictive voting laws. Moreover\, when researching this cultural adaptation process\, scholars have faced their own challenges as well. This presentation highlights some of the peculiar – and in some ways absurd – dilemmas and limitations that psychologists have faced when attempting to study Arab American acculturation from the theoretical frameworks and methodologies dominant in the traditional psychological acculturation literature.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Mona M. Amer\, PhD\, is a Professor of Psychology and was founding chair of the Department of Psychology at the American University in Cairo\, where she has received the university’s annual teaching and service awards. She completed her doctorate at the University of Toledo and postdoctoral fellowship as an APA Minority Fellow at Yale University School of Medicine. Her work revolves around ethnic/racial disparities in behavioral health\, with specializations in the Arab and Muslim minorities. As a clinical-community psychologist she is interested in risk and protective factors that impact disparities\, and ways to eliminate inequities through culturally competent services\, community-based programming\, and social policy. Her publications include two articles in American Psychologist and two landmark co-edited Routledge books: Handbook of Arab American Psychology and Counseling Muslims: Handbook of Mental Health Issues and Interventions. This paper points out that in such models the issue of nonstandard inference can arise even when the instruments are strong. Moreover\, this occurs at very important points of parameter space\; for instance\, when the coefficient on the mismeasured regressor in a nonlinear regression is close to zero. The root of the problem is weak identification of the nuisance parameters\, such as the distribution of the measurement error or control variable. These parameters are weakly identified when the mismeasured variable has small effect on the outcomes. As a result\, the estimators of the parameters of interest generally are not asymptotically normal and the standard tests and confidence sets can be invalid. We illustrate how this issue arises in several estimation approaches. This complication can be particularly problematic when the nuisance parameters are infinite-dimensional.\n\n Making use of the specific structure of the EIV problem\, the paper proposes simple approaches to conducting uniformly valid inference about the parameter of interest. The highlevel conditions are illustrated by a detailed analysis of a semiparametric approach to EIV in the general moment condition settings. However\, the more ambitious the mission goals and the farther exploration takes us from Earth\, the more ingenious\, cost-effective\, and safe solutions need to be engineered to enable such missions. To handle the increasing complexity\, the next generation of space missions will require autonomous human-level decision-making in highly unknown or perturbed environments. \n\nIn this talk\, I will present the prospects and challenges for developing autonomous and robotics systems that can dynamically evolve and modify with the environment. The talk will highlight how the system-level impact of autonomy integration and its combination with optimal control allows for an intelligent\, dynamic\, autonomous system capable of making rational decisions that consider both the safety and performance of the specific executed operations and the overall performance of the mission. \n\nThis approach is used to advance aerobraking\, an atmospheric process used to slow down and insert a spacecraft into a low orbit around a planet\, showing dramatic advancement in flight performance\, risk\, and cost. Finally\, a generalization of the findings is presented in terms of necessary improvements for designing environment-aware decision-making algorithms\, and the opportunities autonomy will provide for the next generation of space missions.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Giusy Falcone is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. She works on trajectory optimization for space applications in the RExLab group under the guidance of Prof. Zachary Manchester. In May 2022\, she earned a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the supervision of Prof. Zachary Putnam. Her expertise lies in hypersonic and space systems\; space guidance\, navigation\, and control\; flight mechanics\; mission design\; trajectory optimization\; artificial intelligence\; and autonomous systems. This process is facilitated at the graft endothelial surface\, where inflamed endothelial cells (ECs) upregulate adhesion molecules and recruit effector cells of the host immune system. To combat this dysfunctional inflammation locally and with more impact than globally administered therapies\, anti-inflammatory agents can be administered directly to the graft endothelium. We have designed a strategy for local and sustained delivery of these agents using molecularly-targeted polymer nanoparticles (NPs) during a period of ex vivo normothermic machine perfusion (EVNMP) of the organ. I will present several approaches for therapeutic delivery using polymeric NPs as well as strategies to direct NPs using molecular targets to the ECs of interest. We have discovered that rapid accumulation of NPs on ECs relies on both the density and accessibility of the potential ligands\, and that these parameters can be measured directly in the relevant human vessel setting. The experiments we have conducted within these platforms are being used to develop a high throughput preclinical approach to optimize immune therapy for local and robust treatment in human organ transplant.\n\nBio: I joined the faculty at Villanova University in the fall of 2022 in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. I am continuing my research into NP-based therapeutic delivery to human vasculature and integrating these strategies with tissue-engineering to create tools for long-term immune modulation. Specifically\, materials that provide support for tissue regrowth while temporarily inhibiting inflammation-related injury\, thus reducing the burden of chronic inflammation. My work presented here today was done as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Biomedical Engineering at Yale University as part of Dr. W. Mark Saltzman’s research group. I draw on ethnographic research that I conducted between 2016 and 2017 at the Desert Echo Facility (pseudonym)\, a state prison in the American Southwest that holds individuals from minimum to high-security levels. Some incarcerated people feel supposedly inanimate objects\, such as walls and floors\, moving\, while others feel vibrations moving across the compound. For many of the incarcerated\, physical movement signifies aliveness – meaning that incarceration forces them to question if they are less alive than the “inanimate” materials that confine them. Others understand these movements as the direct violence of the state that represent purposeful disruptions to the ways they construct relations. For instance\, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) requires that molecules interact with the metal surface at short distances of 2 nm or less without disrupting the surface atoms. In this presentation\, anisotropic nanostructures such as gold nanostars will be used in conjunction with SERS to detect trace molecules. Two challenges and approaches to better predict structure-function behavior of noble metal nanoparticles will be discussed. A combination of experimental measurements that provide molecular-level insight coupled with semi-empirical modeling will be shown to improve the systematic use of gold nanostars by providing a method for predicting the stability and hence\, the fate of nanomaterials in various environmental conditions. And the University of Michigan was at the center of these and other efforts in library digitization. Please join us for discussion with a panel of individuals who were intimately involved in the process: Paul Courant\, who as U-M Provost at the time shaped a visionary response to the opportunities of digitization and Google in particular\; Wendy Pradt Lougee\, who as head of the Graduate Library and of Digital Library Services spearheaded electronic access and nurtured innovative approaches to it\; John Wilkin\, a leader in digital humanities who provided leadership in negotiating critical understandings and agreements concerning usage of digital material\; and Roger Schonfeld\, co-author of Along Came Google: A History of Library Digitization\, which gives a comprehensive account of this important development in the history of modern access to knowledge.\n\nAs with all events at the Detroit Observatory\, visitors are invited to tour the Observatory after the event\, with observing if the weather permits.\n\nPaul Courant is the Edward M. Among many roles at U-M\, Courant has served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs\, as university librarian and dean of libraries\, and as director of the Institute of Public Policy Studies (predecessor of the Ford School). His academic work has recently focused on economic and policy questions relating to universities\, libraries and archives\, and the effects of new information technologies. He was a founding board member of both the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Digital Public Library of America.\n\nWendy Pradt Lougee served as University Librarian and Dean of Libraries\, and McKnight Presidential Professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities\, retiring in 2020. Schonfeld is the vice president of organizational strategy for ITHAKA and of Ithaka S+R’s libraries\, scholarly communication\, and museums program. With Deanna Marcum\, he wrote Along Came Google: A History of Library Digitization (Princeton University Press\, 2021)\, examining structural impediments to digital strategy and the role of an outside catalyst in fostering digitization among research libraries. Roger was previously at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and currently serves board member for the Center for Research Libraries.\n\nJohn Wilkin is the Chief Executive Officer of Lyrasis. Prior to joining Lyrasis\, Wilkin served as the Dean of Libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign from 2013-2022\, as well as UIUC’s Interim Provost from 2017-2018. He was the founding executive director of HathiTrust and served in that capacity from 2008 until 2013. In some languages like English and Spanish\, sentences with two expressions specifying quantity\, or quantifiers (for instance\, ‘every’\, ‘some’\, and ‘a’)\, are syntactically ambiguous\, meaning their structure permits two possible interpretations (see example 1). Although the construction is ambiguous\, research suggests that speakers of these languages tend to prefer one interpretation that is more instinctive. Furthermore\, some studies suggest that bilinguals may have a different intuitions of the sentence interpretation for each of their languages (Lee\, 2009\; Scontras et al.\, 2017). Importantly\, language dominance\, language proficiency and order of acquisition have been suggested as possible predictors of whether bilinguals do have a divergence between their two languages.\n\n(1) A person bought every book\n\nInterpretation 1: Say there are 10 books and all were bought by a single person\n\n Interpretation 2: Say there are 10 books and each was bought by a different person\n\nTo date\, research has not investigated how Spanish/English bilinguals interpret syntactically ambiguous sentences of quantifier scope. The current study therefore advances this research and also asks whether Spanish/English bilinguals show divergence in the two languages. Furthermore\, this work attempts to determine whether a given factor (language proficiency\, order of acquisition\, etc) better predicts divergence in the two languages\, if divergence arises. To answer these questions\, an experimental study is being conducted with 60 Mexican-Spanish/English heritage bilinguals. Participants complete three tasks: Judging whether a sentence is true or false to determine how instinctive the two possible interpretations are\, (2) a proficiency test in both languages\, and (3) a language background questionnaire to collect linguistic information of the participants.
