During his first years of adolescence\, Muzamil grows up like other children\, but sometimes feels uneasy about his future. When Muzammil turns 19\, he begins grappling with a holy man's prediction that he will die when he turns twenty.\n\nFilm Facts & Background:\nSince few films had been produced in Sudan since independence in 1956\, You Will Die at Twenty was only the country's eighth feature film. Filmmaker Amjad Abu Alala\, who was born in Dubai to Sudanese parents\, shot the film in northern Sudan during the upheavals of the Sudanese revolution and despite challenges in a country without a film industry and under the Islamist government of the time.\n__________________\nThis African Muslim Film Festival is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the African Studies Center\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, the Center for Middle East and North African Studies\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\, the Department of Middle Eastern Studies\, the Department of Political Science\, and the Sawyer Seminar on the Africana Muslim and Genealogies of White Supremacy.\n\nVisit http://watch.eventive.org/amff for more details.\n\nWant to hear about similar events from U-M Islamic Studies? SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Select Works By James Charles Morris
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\, Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the artistic community.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Asymptotic normality and optimality in nonsmooth stochastic approximation
DESCRIPTION:In their seminal work\, Polyak and Juditsky showed that stochastic approximation algorithms for solving smooth equations enjoy a central limit theorem. Moreover\, it has since been argued that the asymptotic covariance of the method is best possible among any estimation procedure in a local minimax sense of H´ajek and Le Cam. A long-standing open question in this line of work is whether similar guarantees hold for important non-smooth problems\, such as stochastic nonlinear programming or stochastic variational inequalities. In this work\, we show that this is indeed the case. This is joint work with Damek Davis and Liwei Jiang.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Dissertation Defense: Higher Order Representation Stability and Disk Configuration Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this dissertation we study the ordered configuration space of open unit-diameter disks in the infinite strip of width w. For a sufficiently nice manifold X\, Church--Ellenberg--Farb proved that the k-th homology of the ordered configuration space of n points in X stabilizes in a representation theoretic sense as n increases. Miller--Wilson extended this first-order representation stability to more general X\, and they proved that there is a second-order representation stability pattern among the unstable homology classes. \n\nThe homology of the ordered configuration space of open unit-diameter disks in the infinite strip of width w has an algebraic structure\, that of a twisted algebra\, and we find a finite presentation for homology as such. We use this presentation to show that the ordered configuration space of open unit-diameter disks in the infinite strip of width w exhibits notions of first- through w/2-th-order representation stability\, recovering several classical results for configurations of points in the plane in the process. In the case of the infinite strip of width 2\, we use first-order representation stability to decompose homology as a direct sum of induced symmetric group representations. Additionally\, we show that second-order representation stability for configurations of points in a manifold can be much more complex than first-order representation stability.\n\nHYBRID Defense: 2058 East Hall\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98747130770?pwd=Tlk3aW00SklSMXJIOU0rRjk3RVlVdz09

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Energy Transitions in Regulated Markets
DESCRIPTION:Electricity generation is a critically important component of the economy and modern life. However\, it also generates substantial negative externalities. In particular\, electricity generation in the U.S. contributed 31% of U.S. CO2 emissions in 2019 (Energy Information Agency\, 2020). Beyond its climate change impacts\, electricity generation also emits substan- tial local pollutants that harm human health\, with damages for the U.S. estimated at $57.3 billion in 2017 (Holland et al.\, 2020). \n\nAt the same time that research has highlighted the importance of the damages from emissions\, we are in the middle of two major transitions in electricity generation. First\, over the past two decades\, the cost of generating electricity with natural gas has plummeted. This was caused by the pairing of combined cycle generation technology with hydraulic fracturing\, which has resulted in gas plants becoming more efficient at the same time that natural gas fuel prices have fallen. Second\, the costs of large-scale solar panels and batteries have both dropped over 80% since 2010 (International Renewable Energy Agency\, 2020\; Cole and Frazier\, 2019\; Goldie-Scot\, 2019). Given these cost declines and the substantially lower pollution externalities from renewables\, a transition to renewable energy appears imminent. \n\nThese transitions are occurring in a highly regulated environment. Electric utilities’ investment and pricing decisions have historically been regulated as natural monopolies. The 1990s saw extensive electricity deregulation in the U.S. and Europe. In the U.S.\, this deregulatory push ended with the California electricity crisis of the early 2000s\, leaving a patchwork system where different states have substantially different levels of regulatory control. \n\nIn its simplest form\, regulation of utilities’ pricing and investment sets electricity prices such that firms earn a “fair” rate-of-return on their capital. The canonical model of rate- of-return regulation\, Averch and Johnson (1962) (AJ)\, shows that utilities will respond to this type of regulation by over-investing in capital\, suggesting that regulated utilities may have an incentive to over-invest in capacity in these new technologies. However\, AJ cannot directly be applied to electricity generation since many of their fundamental assumptions (e.g. elastic demand) do not fit this sector. Moreover\, anecdotal evidence suggests that regulated utilities transition more slowly than others: the restructured states of Texas and California lead the U.S. in renewable energy production by a substantial margin (U.S. Energy Information Agency\, 2020)\, and nuclear power plants in states undergoing restructuring disproportionately closed (Davis and Wolfram\, 2012). \n\nIn this paper we investigate whether the regulatory structure has impeded energy tran- sitions to new technologies and whether it incentivizes utilities to use the existing capital stock inefficiently. To do this\, we will develop and estimate a model of regulation with plant investment and exit over the long-run and electricity generation and import decisions in the short-run. Our model builds on the AJ framework in a way that allows us to model the electricity industry. The ultimate goal of this paper is to evaluate how potential regulatory structures could impact the transition to renewable energy. \n\nIn the twenty-first century\, the fuel used to generate the majority of electricity in the 1 U.S. has transitioned from coal to natural gas. This has led to a 28% reduction in CO2 emissions between 2005 and 2018 and lower local air pollution (U.S. Energy Information Administration\, 2018). Two major technological innovations facilitated the evolution toward natural gas. First\, combined cycle natural gas generation technology dramatically increased the efficiency with which generators could turn natural gas into electricity. Second\, hydraulic fracturing (fracking) has drastically increased the quantity of economically accessible natural gas reserves in the U.S.\, thereby lowering natural gas prices. \n\nWith the recent declines in solar and battery technology prices\, we are on the cusp of an- other energy transition. These transitions are occurring in a partially regulated environment\, with investment and pricing requiring state Public Utility Commission (PUC) approval in some states but not in others. Even in restructured markets—which have undergone some deregulation—while investment into and exit out of generation are deregulated\, decisions on the transmission and distribution of electricity and final consumer prices often still require PUC approval. This makes understanding the policies that facilitated (or hindered) the transition from coal to natural gas paramount. \n\nThis paper seeks to understand how the regulatory structure affects energy transitions. In particular\, we ask two key questions. First\, how does regulation affect the rate at which electricity generation transitions to new technologies? Second\, given the existing generation capacity at any point in time\, how does regulation affect the use of different generators? To answer these questions\, we develop and estimate a model of utility investment and usage under regulation. Our model has both long-run investment and exit and short-run operations components. In the long-run\, the regulated utility decides on the amount of coal generation to retire and of natural gas generation to adopt. Within each year\, however\, the utility makes generation decisions given its investment decisions and exogenous fuel prices. We seek to understand how different regulatory structures would affect energy transitions—both from coal to natural gas generation and\, looking forward\, to renewable electricity generation. \n\nTo understand the current regulatory structure\, we adapt the canonical model of regula- tion (Averch and Johnson\, 1962\, AJ). In the AJ model\, the regulated utility is constrained to a maximum return on capital but can price as a monopolist given this constraint. This model is limited in the context of electricity\, because electricity demand is highly inelastic implying that the AJ prices are infinite under many functional forms. Thus\, our goal is to develop and estimate an updated model of electricity regulation that incorporates key specifics of this sector and that generates predictions that are in line with the observed data. To do this\, we start with a model where\, each period\, regulators deem a set of capital owned by the utility to be effective\, representing the “used and useful” standards that state PUCs typically employ. The regulator then reimburses the utility for marginal costs and allows it to earn a rate-of-return on its effective capital. This rate-of-return decreases in consumer electricity rates in order to incentivize the utility to lower costs. The utility chooses its generation and investment decisions to maximize profits in this regulatory environment. \n\nOur model of regulation innovates relative to AJ in three dimensions. First\, unlike AJ\, the rate-of-return that the utility can earn is declining in the final consumer price of electric- ity. This both recognizes political economy constraints (Wilson\, 2019\; Hausman\, 2019) and prevents the utility from charging arbitrarily high prices\, which it could feasibly do under 2 AJ’s rate-of-return formulation by investing in an immense capital stock. Second\, in order to model the used and useful standard\, we assume that if the utility does not operate the plant sufficiently\, it will not receive the rate-of-return on the entire plant capital. This allows for regulation to potentially distort short-run operation decisions in addition to investment decisions\, in particular leading to the overuse of old\, inefficient generators (Daniel et al.\, 2020). Third\, we adapt AJ to a dynamic setting in order to understand the role of regulation in the adoption of new technologies and in the retirement of existing capital.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion\, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible. \n\nWhen paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive\, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production\, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist. \n\nThere is an additional assumption that those who identify as women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique\, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such. \n\nIn an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions\, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices\, this exhibition brings together women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion\, their other identities (be those related to their race\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, or status as artists)\, and their practices.\n\nParticipating Artists:\nNour Ballout\nYasmine Diaz\nArshia Fatima Haq\nYasmine Kasem\nManal Shoukair\nSaba Taj

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Preliminary Report on the Medieval Roman Kastra of Kalymnos\, Greece
DESCRIPTION:The Aegean island of Kalymnos\, part of the Dodecanese Archipelago\, has long sat at the crossroads of nations and empires. The ruggedness of its terrain belies its prosperity\, and\, during the regionally destructive transition from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages\, Kalymnians distinguish themselves from their neighbors by the construction of fortifications\, in contrast to other islanders’ flight and dispersal. Reporting on a preliminary season of site visits and GIS recording\, I place Kalymnos within the context of debates on settlement\, conflict\, and economy in the tumultuous seventh century A.D. From recalibrations of previous GIS calculations to the ‘discovery’ of entirely undocumented ancient settlements\, this presentation represents the transition from unwilling armchair archaeology to the long-awaited field-testing of myriad half-blind hypotheses against the truth of the ground\, and the knowledge of local experts.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Leader Inclusivity through the Lens of Marginalized Employees: Pathways to Combat Systemic Inequities
DESCRIPTION:Scholars have increasingly recognized the importance of leaders in workplace inclusion. To date\, leader inclusivity has been conceptualized as a relational approach that builds an equally shared sense of group membership among employees while fostering an appreciation for the unique value of each individual. Yet\, broader systems\, norms\, and practices in organizations can also elicit exclusion. Through an inductive investigation of leader inclusivity\, in a sample of 47 minority-identified employees in STEM organizations\, we find that leader inclusivity was perceived as centering on leaders’ actions to combat inequitable systems\, norms\, and practices. Further\, because these equity-oriented actions were thought to be controversial in nature\, we find that such actions provoked adversarial responses from employees who are invested in the status quo. In turn\, we reveal that leaders must also manage these responses effectively\, in order for inclusivity to be sustained. Taken together\, and departing significantly from current conceptualizations of leader inclusivity\, we find that minority employees view leader inclusivity as a set of pathways which are each set in motion via leaders’ actions to combat inequity. Our results inform a more processual\, systemic\, equity-based approach to studying and practicing leader inclusivity.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Building the Gacaca digital archive
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAfter the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda\, more than 130\,000 inmates were imprisoned and accused of genocide crimes. The country was operating through fire and blood! The judicial system was destroyed – judges and lawyers had been killed or exiled in neighboring countries. To judge the genocidaires\, the government decided to reintroduce the Traditional Jurisdictions Courts called Gacaca. This talk will emphasize what Gacaca did as a court and how it worked during the trials\; the digitization process of the 45 million pages of Gacaca files\; and the impact of the Gacaca files on society after the digitization.\n\nSponsored by the University of Michigan School of Information Data\, Archives\, and Information Seminar\; African Studies Center\; Museum Studies Program\; Ethics\, Society and Computing\; and Franklin Innovator Residency Fund.\n\nSpeaker bio:\nWith a PhD in education from the University of Geneva\, I have substantial experience working with the United Nations\, international non-governmental organizations\, non-profit organizations\, and governments on projects related to equitable and sustainable education curricula. As the Director General of the Research and Documentation Center on Genocide at the Rwanda National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG)\, I managed and led research projects as well as designed\, implemented\, monitored\, and assessed projects related to the Genocide against the Tutsi. Key projects included the digitization of forty-five million pages and four thousand audio-visual materials from Rwanda’s Gacaca Courts\, the preservation of textiles at the Nyamata genocide memorial site\, the preservation of bodies at the Murambi genocide memorial site\, and the preservation of artifacts in six other national genocide memorial sites in Rwanda. Between 2013 and 2015\, I also participated in a team responsible for designing Rwanda’s new national education curriculum for history and civic education. I am currently a Consultant with the International Labour Organization (ILO) for their Accelerator Lab 8.7 Program\, which provides funding and support to international organizations with innovative solutions to tackle child labor\, forced labor\, and human trafficking.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Placeless Identity\, Transgenerational Trauma: A Reading and Conversation with Marina Frenk
DESCRIPTION:As part of the German Studies Colloquium\, the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures invites you to join us for a virtual reading and discussion with author Marina Frenk:\n\nPlaceless Identity\, Transgenerational Trauma: \nA Reading and Conversation with Marina Frenk\n\nMarina Frenk will read from her debut novel ewig her und gar nicht wahr (Berlin 2020). She will be introduced by Ph.D. candidate Lauren Beck\, one of Frenk's translators\, who organized this event and will lead the discussion. \n\nAt the age six\, Kira\, the protagonist of ewig her und gar nicht wahr\, had migrated from Moldova to Germany with her Jewish Russian family. Now in her thirties\, Kira lives in Berlin\, and yet she does not seem to have truly arrived in Germany or even the present. Violent hallucinations interrupt her otherwise secure life as a mother and teacher. In fragmented scenes of personal and family memory\, Kira contextualizes her failing grasp on reality through a tangled web of family traumas and their historical contexts.\n\nFrenk’s autofictional novel asks: what remains of identity after multiple generations of uprootedness? How does one engage with an unknown generational trauma? Is it possible to live outside of national or even familial systems?\n\nIn addition to writing\, Frenk performs as a musician and actress at the Gorki Theater in Berlin\, and she will share some of her musical work as well. \n\nThe event organizers invite attendees to participate in English and in German. The readings will be held in German.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series
DESCRIPTION:Social science increasingly uses data that requires advanced tools and algorithms. Preparing text\, audio\, and video data for analysis and running those analyses involves linking contemporary computational tools with datasets and major research challenges in ways that cut across disciplines. Building bridges between data scientists who develop the tools to analyze these data and social scientists who have datasets to address research questions in unprecedented ways that could benefit from them is critical for both opening the world of these new data and refining the tools for analysis.\n \nThe Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series\, jointly sponsored by MIDAS\, the AI Lab and ISR\, is designed to build connections between social scientists and data scientists to improve scholarship in both arenas. Scholars in both groups present research vision and cutting-edge methodology that could benefit from additional interdisciplinary collaboration and theorizing. The series connects faculty\, research scientists\, postdoctoral\, and graduate students to help build major research projects from their vision\, find the right methods for their data\, identify collaborators\, or find scholars who can help trial run the tools they have developed. \n \nEvents will be held from 2:00-3:30 PM in ISR 6050 (426 Thompson Street)\, with meetings in January\, February\, March\, April\, and May. Refreshments provided. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time: https://myumi.ch/7eZWG For more information\, or if you are interested in presenting work in progress at this series\, please contact Beth Uberseder (ubersbe@umich.edu).\n \nSpeakers TBA.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Building the Future: A Distinguished Lecture Series for Academics and Professionals
DESCRIPTION:A confluence of opportunities and national and international grand challenges are influencing current directions in the design of urban regions as populations expand. This presentation will summarize new developments to create resilient and sustainable cities through research on the built environment across several themes. Research on resilience highlights the development of structural systems that are able to be returned to use quickly after extreme events. Sustainable engineering\, in turn\, highlights research on strategies for developing new structural systems that greatly decrease the amount of energy\, material waste\, pollution\, and greenhouse gas emissions in construction and use of buildings and other structures. Urban engineering summarizes approaches for conducting regional simulations to predict the impacts and opportunities across urban regions that are designed with more sustainable and resilient civil engineering solutions. By directly addressing resilience and sustainability in structural design and regional assessment\, this work offers insights into how engineering innovations can be used to create a new generation of solutions for urban regions. \n\nA panel discussion will follow the lecture. Our distinguished panelists include: Lawrence F. Kruth\, Kruth Engineering\, LLC\, Former Vice President of Engineering & Research at AISC\; Jason McCormick\, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, University of Michigan\; and Tabitha Stine\, General Manager of Construction Solutions Services at Nucor Corporation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Dorr Lecture - Dr. Michael Gurnis\, California Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:A drastic change in plate tectonics and mantle convection occurred around 50 million years ago within the Pacific hemisphere. This is exemplified by the prominent bend in the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount change which seems to indicate that the Pacific Plate abruptly changed its direction from mostly motion to the north to the west. The Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) and the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zones formed at the same time and investigators have long empirically linked IBM formation and Pacific Plate motion with the initiation of this vast subduction system pulling the Pacific to the west. I shed new light on this topic by describing results from ocean drilling in the IBM system and the southwest Pacific within the context of a new generation of global geodynamic models which realistically treats the mechanics of subduction and plate tectonics. Both an abrupt Pacific Plate motion change and a change in mantle plume dynamics have been proposed to account for the Hawaiian–Emperor Bend\, but debates surround the relative contribution of the two mechanisms. I’ll describe plate reconstructions and high-resolution global dynamic models that quantify the amount of Pacific Plate motion change. The models show that ridge demise as well as Izu–Bonin–Mariana subduction initiation are incapable of causing a sudden change in plate motion\, challenging the conventional hypothesis on the mechanisms of Pacific Plate motion change. Instead\, Palaeocene intraoceanic subduction in the northern Pacific (long known from the geology of Kamchatka) exerts a northward pull on the Pacific Plate\, while its Eocene demise leads to a sudden 30–35° change in plate motion\, accounting for about half of the Hawaiian–Emperor Bend. I suggest the Pacific Plate motion change and hotspot drift due to plume dynamics could have contributed nearly equally to the formation of the Hawaiian Emperor Bend. Such a scenario is consistent with available constraints from global plate circuits\, palaeomagnetic data and geodynamic models.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Spring 2023 MEMS Lecture. In the Aftermath of the Divine Winds: Religious Responses to the Mongol Threat and the Medieval Reimagining of Japan
DESCRIPTION:Twice in the late thirteenth century\, the Mongol empire launched attack fleets against Japan. On both occasions\, they were repelled by fortuitous storms. Scholarly accounts of the Mongol threat have focused on Japan’s military defense. However\, massive efforts were also poured into ritual countermeasures: Sacred texts were copied and recited\, buddha images commissioned\, and enemy-subduing rites performed. The failure of the invasion attempts was attributed to the intervention of Japan’s local deities (kami) and catalyzed a conceptual inversion of Japan’s cosmological status\, from “a marginal land in the last age” to a timeless\, inviolable realm at the very center of the Buddhist world.\n\nBio: Jacqueline Stone is professor emerita of Japanese Religions in the Religion Department of Princeton University. She focuses on Japanese Buddhism of the medieval and modern periods. Her current research interests include traditions of the Lotus Sutra\, particularly the Tendai and Nichiren sects\; Buddhism and Japanese identity formation\; and modern reinterpretations of Buddhist thought and practice. She is the author of Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism (1999) and Right Thoughts at the Last Moment: Buddhism and Deathbed Practices in Early Medieval Japan (2016).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Learning reduced effective stochastic differential equations from data
DESCRIPTION:Since Newton’s era\, we have been constructing mathematical models for dynamical systems (ordinary\, partial\, and stochastic differential equations) from first principles. Those closed-form models allowed our understanding of the physical world to advance for the past centuries. However\, accurately deriving computationally efficient\, and explainable models for systems like the financial market\, the climate or an epidemic disease remains a challenging problem. This indicates the need for a different approach to construct mathematical models that circumvent explicit analytical formulation.\n\nIn my talk\, I will discuss\, how the construction of models directly from observations/data is possible for stochastic differential equations. I will portray that deep learning architectures based on numerical stochastic integrators\, such as the Euler-Maruyama\, can be used to learn/identify data-driven stochastic differential equations directly from data [1]. I will illustrate how identified effective stochastic differential equations can be constructed in physical-interpretable coarse variables when they are available\, but also on latent data-driven observables using the manifold learning scheme Diffusion Maps [2]. I will provide examples to illustrate this approach for (a) electric-field mediated colloidal crystallization using data obtained from Brownian Dynamics Simulations [3\,4] (b) a Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible adaptive network [5] and (c) an event-driven agent-based financial model [6\,7].\n\nReferences: \n[1] Dietrich\, F.\, Makeev\, A.\, Kevrekidis\, G.\, Evangelou\, N.\, Bertalan\, T.\, Reich\, S.\, & Kevrekidis\, I. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | The Prose Poetry of Partition: Saadat Hasan Manto’s Siyah Hashiye (Black Margins) and Formal Experimentation
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jennifer Dubrow\, University of Washington\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting at:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95022625918\n\nIn 1948\, Saadat Hasan Manto published Siyah Hashiye (Black Margins)\, a collection of vignettes and prose poems on the everyday violence of Partition. Manto’s work troubles the distinction between progressivism and modernism\, and points to the formal experimentation that pervaded mid twentieth-century Urdu writing. In this talk\, I focus on what I identify as Manto’s prose poems in Siyah Hashiye\, which may be the most powerful and unsettling work of fiction on the Partition. Manto blends aspects of ghazal poetry with attention to print layout to produce an experience of the now that rejects the lyrical while also invoking it. By placing Manto within the context of contemporary modernist poets N.M. Rashed and Miraji\, this talk shows how Siyah Hashiye responded to experiments with free verse and ideas of modern poetry to create a kind of anti-poetry. As such\, the talk outlines the importance of poetic experimentation for postcolonial South Asian literatures and exposes how Partition occasioned formal as well as thematic breaks.\n \nJennifer Dubrow is Associate Professor of Urdu at the University of Washington\, Seattle. She is the author of Cosmopolitan Dreams: The Making of Modern Urdu Literary Culture in Colonial South Asia (University of Hawai’i Press\, 2018\; Permanent Black\, 2019)\, as well as several articles on modern Urdu prose fiction. She is writing a book\, currently titled Partitioned Forms\, on Progressivism\, modernism\, and formal experimentation in Urdu fiction from the 1930s to the 1960s.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Fruit of the Poisonous Tree: The Marcos Diaries
DESCRIPTION:In his haste to evacuate the Malacañang Presidential Palace in February 1986\, former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos left many handwritten diaries covering the years 1969-1984. While the originals are in the custody of the Presidential Commission on Good Government\, unofficial copies have been circulating for years.\n\nPreparing the diaries of publication entailed collating\, validating\, and annotating entries from different sources\, contemporary newspapers\, the *Official Gazette*\, and declassified U.S. State Department records. The project is not just an exercise in documentary editing but being critical of Marcos’ self-referential and biased view of events. In light of the current rewriting of the first Marcos presidency\, these documents are double-edged\, the fruit of the poisonous tree.\n\nAmbeth R. Ocampo is a public historian whose research covers the 19th-century Philippines—its art\, culture\, and the people who figure in the birth of the nation. Professor and former chairman of the Department of History at the Ateneo de Manila University\, Professor Ocampo writes “Looking Back\,” the longest-running editorial page column on history for the *Philippine Daily Inquirer*. To read his articles\, visit https://opinion.inquirer.net/column/looking-back.\n\nProfessor Ocampo has published over 35 books\, the most recent being: *Queridas de Rizal: Looking Back 16 and Yaman: History and Heritage in Philippine Money*\, which was shortlisted for the 2022 National Book Award for History. He served as president of the City College of Manila\; president of the Philippine Historical Association\; co-chair of the Manila Historical and Heritage Commission\; chairman of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines\; and chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. In another life\, he was a Benedictine monk known as Dom. Ignacio Maria\, OSB. He now moderates growing Facebook\, Instagram\, and YouTube channels.\n\nThis is an in-person and virtual event. SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Seeing in Depth: Mars
DESCRIPTION:As the Earth passes by Mars\, the Detroit Observatory takes a closer looks at our solar system's rusty\, red neighbor.\n\nThe Detroit Observatory's Seeing in Depth programs are a chance to take a closer look at some of the people\, places\, and sciences from the observatory's history. Mars has occupied the imagination of earthlings for as long as they've pondered the night sky. As the red planet moves across Michigan's winter night sky\, the Detroit Observatory will point its telescopes towards the red planet. We will also share stories about humanity's understanding of Mars through the 20th century and astronomers from the DO who helped explore it.\n\nTalks and presentations begin at 8PM. Telescope observing is weather dependent.
