SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community\, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation *With Care*\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990. \n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Marroquin works with youth and communities to decenter dominant narratives and to address displacement and erasure. Her current work explores belonging through histories of student rebellions in Chicago Public Schools from 1968 to 1980. Through research and creative practice\, she aims to recover and re-present histories of Black and brown youth and women’s leadership in the struggle for justice in Chicago. \n\nMarroquin has presented her work at the Kochi Biennale\, the Annual Conference of the American Association of Research Librarians\, University of Maine\, New York Archivist Round Table\, Jane Addams Hull House Museum\, Northwestern University\, DePaul Museum of Art\, on WLPN Lumpen Radio\, Gallery 400\, Hyde Park Art Center and more. Her essays are included in the Visual Art Research Journal\, Counter-Signals\, the Chicago Social Practice History Series\, Revista Contratiempo\, Where the Future Came From\, and Organize Your Own: The Politics and Poetics of Self-Determination Movements. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. DESCRIPTION:Prashant Patel\nResearch Staff Member\, Institute for Defense Analyses\n\nAbstract:\nSpace is undergoing a rejuvenation as it is an important focus of commercial activity and investment\, there are national security interests\, and civil authorities are grappling with increasing exploration and management challenges. I will discuss how continuous maneuver in space is now possible using electric propulsion and advanced algorithms. This has important implications for constellation design\, space traffic management\, and other issues. As part of the talk\, I will highlight how my Michigan education and the community directly contributed to helping me solve national security issues.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Patel is a Research Staff Member at the Institute for Defense Analyses. He has contributed to a wide range of topics including nuclear forces\, interest-based targeting\, space\, industrial base studies\, trade studies\, and many other interesting and cool topics. He has worked with numerous agencies including the Department of Defense\, Veteran’s Affairs\, Department of Energy\, and the Intelligence Community. Dr. Patel earned his BSE in Aerospace Engineering\, MEng in Space System\, and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nUnderstanding the role of climatic gradients shaping species interactions and system-level structure and function has been the thrust of ecological studies. We are exploring how experimental warming and drought shapes the structure and function of montane meadows and temperate prairies. By tracking individual abundance and functional traits across plant communities\, alongside ecosystem carbon dynamics\, we address how climatic change influences prairies\nand meadows across levels of biological organization. DESCRIPTION:There are several notions of entropy for flows arising from geometry\, including volume entropy\, metric entropy with respect to a natural volume\, and topological entropy. General theory shows that metric entropy is always at most the topological entropy. Due to a classical work of Katok\, equality occurs only for geodesic flows on negatively cured surfaces only when the underlying manifold is hyperbolic. DESCRIPTION:Automated Design to Engineer Organisms: Scaling up Synthetic Biology to Tackle Humanity's Challenges\n\nAbstract:\nOrganism engineering is the bedrock of biotechnology from producing high-value products (enzymes\, materials\, therapeutics) to developing cell therapies. With the latest techniques in DNA synthesis and assembly\, it is now possible to construct large genetic systems with (just about) any DNA sequence of interest\, enabling one to engineer sophisticated genetic systems inside cells with many genetic parts. Engineered genetic systems can act as sensors\, circuits\, and actuators to detect environmental states and autonomously act to change them\, for example\, probiotic bacteria that sense body temperatures to activate the expression of enzymes that treat metabolic diseases. However\, it remains highly challenging to build such genetic systems with high-performance behaviors\; there are many “tunable knobs” and inter-dependent interactions that create a “curse of dimensionality” with cryptic (unaccounted for) effects. To overcome these challenges\, new approaches are needed that parallel the development of a modern engineering discipline centered around organism engineering.\n\nSpecifically\, we show that it is now possible to rationally engineer genetic systems by combining predictive models of gene expression together with sequence design algorithms. Our models utilize statistical thermodynamics\, kinetics\, and machine learning to predict how DNA sequence controls transcription rates\, translation rates\, mRNA decay rates\, gene regulation\, and more. Leveraging these model predictions\, we automate the design of genetic parts and systems (long DNA sequences) using multi-objective optimization to ensure the engineered organisms have the desired specifications (maximizing target functions\, while minimizing undesired behaviors). To develop and test these models\, we utilize the latest advances in oligopool synthesis\, library-based cloning\, and next-generation sequencing to carry out thousands of defined experiments per workflow. We illustrate our rational design approach with several recent applications\, including engineering genetic systems to sense-and-respond to human biomarker proteins inside cell-free assays for medical diagnostics and engineering genetic systems to sense-and-respond to TNT inside soil systems for countermine detection.\n\nWe have also developed an interactive web-based design platform for engineering organisms\, which now has over 10000 registered researchers who have designed over 900\,000 genetic systems for diverse biotech applications (medical\, industrial\, agricultural\, defense). The platform provides a “no-code” interface to our suite of predictive models & design algorithms\, enabling its broad usage by the community. Altogether\, these efforts demonstrate that physiochemical models can indeed predict biological functions with sufficient accuracy to automatically design genetic systems with high performance behaviors.\n\nBio:\nProf. Howard Salis is an Associate Professor in the Biological Engineering\, Chemical Engineering\, and Biomedical Engineering departments at Penn State University. He is also a member of the Bioinformatics & Genomics and Molecular\, Cellular\, & Integrative Biosciences graduate programs. Prof. Salis’ expertise is in the design & engineering of genetic systems in microbial organisms for diverse biotech applications (industrial\, medical\, agricultural\, defense). His lab’s mission is to co-develop a new engineering discipline for biology through the development of predictive models & design algorithms that circumvent the need for trial-and-error experimentation. To develop and test these approaches\, his lab carries out thousands of defined experiments per workflow utilizing the latest in oligopool synthesis and next-generation sequencing. Prof. Salis has received the DARPA Young Faculty award and the NSF CAREER award for his achievements. He is also the founder of De Novo DNA\, which runs a web-based design platform for engineering organisms\, used by over 10000 researchers to design over 900000 genetic systems for diverse biotech applications. Prof. Salis earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University (2002) and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota (2007). DESCRIPTION:In the ninth-century South African Highveld\, Nguni-speakers lost their ancestors. They would spend nearly a millennium seeking new ones and appeasing them by teaching young men and women to speak and act with modesty. As they did\, Nguni-speakers crafted an evolving politics of gender in which the ability to behave politely brought social connections and economic opportunities. Against European and African accounts that reduce modesty to a lever for women’s oppression\, this talk asks what happens to our understanding of power and alterity when men and women perform gender in the same way\, and when some cannot perform gender at all. \n\nRaevin Jimenez is an assistant professor of history at the University of Michigan. Professor Jimenez specializes in the interdisciplinary study of Africa’s distant past with an emphasis on language\, orality\, and materiality. Her current work traces the role of gender as concept and practice across the precolonial history of South Africa.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Traffic signal optimization with connected vehicle trajectories*\n\nTraffic signal retiming is one of the most cost-effective methods for reducing congestion and energy consumption in urban areas based on the existing road infrastructure. However\, high installation and maintenance costs of vehicle detectors have prevented the widespread implementation of adaptive traffic control systems (ATSC). Therefore\, most intersections are still controlled by fixed-time traffic signals which are not updated regularly due to the lack of traffic monitoring capabilities. In the past few years\, vehicle trajectory data has become increasingly available and offers many advantages over detectors and other infrastructure-based sensors for traffic monitoring\; but using such data for automatic traffic signal diagnosis and optimization at scalable implementable levels is relatively unexplored. To fill this gap\, this work proposes Optimizing Traffic Signals as a Service (OSaaS)\, an integrated traffic signal re-timing system that uses vehicle trajectories as the main input. OSaaS addresses many of the current challenges relating to signal retiming with trajectory data such as incomplete observation due to limited penetration rates. The system builds a queueing model that reconstructs the overall average traffic state\, calibrated from performance measurements directly obtained from vehicle trajectories. The calibrated queueing model then predicts and evaluates network performance under different traffic signal parameters to provide diagnostics and direct traffic signal retiming guidance. In April 2022\, a citywide field test of OSaaS was conducted in Birmingham\, Michigan\, with 34 signalized intersections. This resulted in decreases in both the delay and number of stops by up to 20% and 30%\, respectively. OSaaS provides a more scalable\, sustainable\, resilient\, and efficient solution to traffic signal retiming without requiring any additional infrastructure through the exclusive utilization of currently available trajectory data. As a result\, it presents the possibility of upgrading all existing fixed-time traffic signals to dynamic systems with periodical parameter updates\, something that is not currently possible without significant investments in infrastructure-based traffic flow sensors.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar. Carceral Theology in Post-2013 Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Please register for this Zoom workshop at https://myumi.ch/x7myj\n\nIn the years following the military coup in Egypt\, there has been a dramatic upsurge in the state’s carceral practices. Indeed\, political prisons in Egypt serve a central role in the state’s organization of both political and religious life through its disciplinary power. The carceral experience\, however\, is as generative as it is disciplinary. Still\, studies on prisoners’ political and religious lives continue to be analyzed through the wider rubric of the ‘War on Terror’. In this paper\, I show that\, beyond securitized narratives on prison population\, the religious experiences of prisoners are intrinsic foremost to their personhood\, formations of popular theology and hermeneutics\, and even to ethereal beliefs. Muslim prisoners are regularly confronted with issues that are unique to their situation – such as maintaining ritual purity when there is little access to clean water\, maintaining communal prayers in isolation or discerning prayer times and Qibla when knowledge of time and space is unattainable. In doing so\, I pose a central question: what does the adaption of religious practices and popular carceral theologies indicate about religious subjectivities and intersubjectivities of the prison population?\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. DESCRIPTION:Universality as an intellectual and ethical imperative has substantially shaped museum work\, including the management and care of collections. Critiques of the universal—including universal museums—contribute to current and necessary conversations encouraging the decolonization of cultural institutions. At the same time\, the ethical impetus of universal design offers a new set of values with which to imagine the universal in museums. In this talk\, I consider moves from universalism to relativism\, and from singularity to plurality. In seeking to understand why universalism\, its refusal\, and its retention within museum spaces matters\, I propose that museums’ evolving interpretations of universality directly shape how they care—for their collections\, their publics\, and their environments.\n\nPresentation by Cara Krmpotich\, University of Toronto

DESCRIPTION:One would be hard-pressed to come across anybody who doesn’t immediately recognise the work of Whitaker Malem: you may not have heard their names\, but you will most definitely have seen their work. Their influence on popular culture encompasses various creative fields and has led to involvement with many leading visionaries. \nPatrick Whitaker and Keir Malem have been together professionally and personally for over 35 years. Renowned in particular for their leatherwork\, the self-proclaimed “Pop-Artisans” have spent more than three decades obsessing over the human form\, crafting what they describe as body-based sculptures that occupy the fantastic realm between art\, fashion and costume. \nFashion collaborations have included Alexander McQueen for Givenchy haute couture\, Hussein Chalayan\, Christian Louboutin\, Tommy Hilfiger\, Burberry\, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY\, and Giles Deacon. Whitaker Malem’s creations have been photographed by David LaChapelle\, Ellen Von Unwerth\, Helmut Newton\, Mario Testino\, Rankin\, Terry O’Neill\, and Tim Walker\, and have been featured in iconic fashion editorials by Herb Ritts for British Vogue\, Pierre et Gilles for Vogue France\, and\, more recently\, by Rafael Pavarotti for Vogue Italia.\nPop music artists including Madonna\, Mick Jagger\, Janet Jackson\, Cher\, Paula Abdul\, Gloria Estefan\, Paloma Faith\, Doja Cat\, Megan Thee Stallion\, and Tove Lo have worn their designs.\nOver the last 20 years the duo have also worked on numerous movie franchises such as James Bond\, Harry Potter and Fast &amp\; Furious\, notably creating over 100 armor costumes for Wonder Woman and her Amazonian world. Other productions include Aquaman\, Eragon\, 300: Rise of an Empire\, Clash of the Titans and more. They have also created superhero suits for Captain America\, The First Avenger\, and Batman: The Dark Knight.\n2017 saw the first solo Whitaker Malem exhibition at The Gallery Liverpool\, showing retrospective work &amp\; introducing Transmorphic Superpeople\, an optimistic exploration of the multiple possibilities of fluid sexual identities. DESCRIPTION:\"Mirror\, mirror in the basement\, what is the faintest star you can see?\"\n\nScience@DO is joined by U-M Astronomy Professor Emeritus Pat Seitzer to share the story of a giant telescope mirror that once lived in the Detroit Observatory basement and found a home in a telescope across the Atlantic Ocean.\n\n\"In the 1930s the University of Michigan planned a 98-inch reflecting telescope to be located near Dexter in Michigan. The 98-inch mirror was delivered (as part of the mirror development program for the 200-inch Palomar telescope). Sadly\, World War II and the death of Heber Curtis (who championed the project) put an end to the project. The mirror was stored in the basement of the Detroit Observatory for many years\, and eventually was sent to the UK where it became the first mirror in the Isaac Newton telescope at Herstmonceux. When that telescope was moved to the Canary Islands\, the mirror was put on display outside at the Herstmonceux Science Centre\, a piece of history of Michigan astronomy in the UK. I'll present the details of this marvelous history\, including how the 0.6-m Curtis-Schmidt telescope of the U-M now in Chile figures into this.\"\n\nTalk begins at 7PM. The historic Detroit Observatory will be open for tours following the talk. Telescope observing will be available\, weather permitting.

DESCRIPTION:Atlanta-born songwriter Shawn Mullins hit it big in the late 1990s with his “Soul’s Core” album\, and the all-over-the-radio singles “Lullaby” and “Beautiful Wreck.” He has never slowed down\, recording for Vanguard and other labels\, and performing many wonderful shows at The Ark. For the 20th anniversary of “Soul’s Core\,” Shawn will revisit the music and record two new versions of the album. He is calling this “Soul’s Core Revival.” This is not a remix or a remaster of the original\, but rather brand-new recordings with new arrangements of the songs—one album will be new stripped-down solo performances\, some on guitar\, some on piano or a cappella\, and the second will be a new studio recording with his full band\, Soul Carnival.
