SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Engaged Mentoring Workshop Series (March 21 and March 22\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:The \"Engaged Mentoring\" workshop is for faculty mentors of research trainees at any stage of training. This workshop is an evidence-based\, interactive approach designed to elevate mentoring skills for engaging in productive\, culturally responsive research mentoring relationships. These skills will support the success of both mentors and mentees. This training is responsive to the new NIGMS guidelines regarding the preparation of mentors involved in training grants.\n\nThis workshop aims to accelerate the process of becoming an effective research mentor by providing mentors with an intellectual framework\, an opportunity to experiment with various methods\, and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of their peers. By the end of the workshop\, mentors will have articulated their style and philosophy of mentoring and have a toolbox of strategies for approaching difficult mentoring situations. This series is adapted from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) \"Entering Mentoring\" curriculum (Pfund\, Branchaw\, and Handelsman\, 2014) and \"Entering Research\" (Branchaw\, Butz\, & Smith\, 2019) and adapted with permission from W.H. Freeman/Macmillan Learning.\nRegister for ALL sessions within this series. The expectation is that participants will make every effort to attend both sessions in the workshop to facilitate cohort discussions. The sessions will take place in person. \nPart I: Tuesday March 21\, 8am-12pm THSL 2955Part II: Wednesday March 22\, 8am-12pm\, THSL 2955\nThere will be an opportunity to attend this workshop April (dates TBD) for those that cannot make the March dates.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:With Care
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community\, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation *With Care*\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990. \n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Through research and creative practice\, she aims to recover and re-present histories of Black and brown youth and women’s leadership in the struggle for justice in Chicago. \n\nMarroquin has presented her work at the Kochi Biennale\, the Annual Conference of the American Association of Research Librarians\, University of Maine\, New York Archivist Round Table\, Jane Addams Hull House Museum\, Northwestern University\, DePaul Museum of Art\, on WLPN Lumpen Radio\, Gallery 400\, Hyde Park Art Center and more. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events\n \nTowards Solidarity: Allyship in Action is a new 6-hour workshop developed by the University of Michigan Spectrum Center. This workshop aims to deepen our UM community's understanding of\, and ability to engage with\, LGBTQIA2S+ allyship. In Towards Solidarity\, we move beyond basic conceptualizations of allyship and challenge participants to center liberation as they show up actively for LGBTQ+ communities. Learning outcomes include:\n \nThrough their participation in this program\, participants will:\n\n- Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity\, a developmental\, intersectional\, and active set of practices\; \n- Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities\;\n- Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels \n- Identify inclusive practices\, skills\, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities\, particularly at U-M\;\n- Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives \n\nIn this public offering of our workshop\, lunch will be provided. We expect that all participants to complete our 1-hour webcourse prior to joining Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action.\n \n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\n\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event\, there is space to report that in the registration\, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form\, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented\, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Dissertation chapter workshop: \"Cartographic disobedience in Craig Santos Perez’s *from unincorporated territory*\,\" Carlina Duan (PhD candidate\, English & Education)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a discussion of U-M English and Education PhD candidate Carlina Duan's dissertation chapter\, “Cartographic disobedience in Santos Perez’s *from unincorporated territory*\,\" on Wednesday\, March 22nd at 10:30am. You can sign up to receive the chapter here: https://forms.gle/aQjsbNzUzsAT4Wms9\n\nIn this chapter\, I explore how contemporary Chamorro poet Craig Santos Perez adopts strategies of cartographic disobedience—what I define as reimagination of\, and aesthetic experimentation with\, geographic map -- in order to renegotiate access to familial and cultural history. I close read selected poems from Perez’s series *from unincorporated territory* (2008-2017)\, additionally drawing on an interview with Perez and an archival visit to the University of Michigan’s Clark Library\, which houses a collection of maps of Guam. By emphasizing cartographic opacity\, integrating embodied archives\, and enacting rhetorical humor\, I illuminate how Perez’s cartographic disobedience reimagines Guam beyond state-sanctioned and ecotourist approximations\, ultimately positioning the poems as counter-maps against documental abstractions of place. Situating my reading of Perez’s poetics in the rich landscape of ongoing contemporary poetry mapping projects\, I argue that Perez’s cartographic disobedience unsettles our typical associations of the map as a “natural object” or guide\, and creatively thwarts the function of the geographical map as a site for place-based clarity. Perez’s practices of\ncartographic disobedience thus make unique interventions in expanding discourses in the creative writing workshop\, where maxims such as “Write what you know” constrictively trap writers — especially marginalized writers — into producing work that fits the constricting discourses of ‘cultural authenticity.’

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+INSPIRE MIDWEEK MINDFULNESS GUIDED SITS
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAqceGoqDosHN15uxUlzCWWN6qwjNjSQpj_ \n\nJoin us in community to practice mindfulness meditation\, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal\, largely-guided\, practice utilizes evidence-based cognitive training that bolsters one's ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat.  This weekly mindfulness practice encourages present moment\, non-judgemental\, awareness – noticing where your focus and attention are and continually inviting attention to current mind and body sensations in a kind and compassionate way.\n\nMindfulness meditation opens the possibility to pause\, gain perspective\, attend to the present\, and respond accordingly. In our ever-changing\, complex\, and challenging world\, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice\, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.\n\nWhether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner\, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:COAST\, MOUNTAIN\, PLAIN: RESULTS FROM A THREE-PROJECT TRANSECT ACROSS NORTHERN ALBANIA AND INTO KOSOVA
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of two decades\, Galaty and colleagues have conducted systematic intensive surveys\, site collections\, and test excavations across northern Albania and western Kosova. Projects in Shkoder close to the sea\, in Shala in the high mountains\, and in Peja and Istog on the Dukagjin Plain shed new light on local archaeological records\, from prehistory to the present\, and on inter-regional interactions. This presentation will review and compare the results of all three research projects\, in particular in terms of shifting settlement patterns\, and with a focus on changes in social organization\, from the Neolithic through the Iron Age.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag | Non-isometric codes and the black hole interior
DESCRIPTION:At late times\, any holographic map from the large semiclassical Hilbert space in the interior of a black hole to the smaller Hilbert space in the boundary must be non-isometric. This implies that a large set of states in the bulk description do not exist in the fundamental description of the system. Despite this\, I will show using a simple model that bulk states and operators whose complexity is sub-exponential in the black hole entropy can be represented in the boundary. I will also discuss the validity of the quantum extremal surface formula and entanglement wedge reconstruction for this non-isometric map.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Moving to Address the Curse of Dimensionality to Enable ‘First Principle’ Optimal Design in Fusion System
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nRecent advances at the National Ignition Facility and their achievement of thermal nuclear burn represents an exciting advancement in fusion energy systems. A close synergy between simulation\, theory\, and experiment\, (including data assimilation) led to this advance. However\, if we were to design a new device at a new operating point outside parameters covered by the experiments\, we lack the ‘first principle’ predictive capabilities that enable such a design. This is because inertial and magnetically confined fusion systems are far from an equilibrium state and can span many plasma regimes Behind all of these challenges in building ‘first principle’ models is dimensionality. To address this challenge\, the Center for Hierarchical and Robust Modeling of Non-Equilibrium Transport (CHaRMNET) was created. CHaRMNET\, a DoE Mathematical Multifaceted Integrated Capability Center\, will develop mathematical tools that enable ‘first principle’ effects within the design loop of fusion energy systems. CHaRMNET will exploit structure within models to mitigate the challenges of dimensionality and to bridge wide ranges of length and time scales in plasma science. The challenge of dimensionality is pervasive throughout computational science and refers to the observation that the resources to solve a problem on a computer scale exponentially with the dimensions. Fundamental plasma models are seven-dimensional and are presently computationally intractable for the engineering scale of plasma systems. In this talk\, I will give an overview of the various thrusts in CHaRMNET to address this challenge\, with a focus on Multi-Scale Modeling.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nAndrew Christlieb is a University Foundation Professor of Mathematics at Michigan State University. He is the lead PI and Director of the Center for Hierarchical and Robust Modeling of Non-Equilibrium Transport. He also serves as the PI for an NSF-HDR-CORE joint program with Spelman College on increasing pathways for marginalized groups within data science as well as the MSU PI on a joint Sloan grant with Spelman on increasing capability for education experiences in data science at institutions serving historically marginalized groups. Prior to serving in these roles\, he was the founding chair for the Dept. of Computational Mathematics\, Science and Engineering from 2015-2021. Currently\, CMSE is 32 faculty\, approximately 100 graduate students\, 20 post docs and 250 data science undergraduates. During his tenure as chair\, junior faculty in CMSE received 14 career awards over 4 years. Christlieb was an Airforce Young Investigator\, served as an IPA with Kirtland Air Force base and served and a range of roles at MSU since moving there in 2006 as an Assistant Professor.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom: https://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2223.php#winter2023

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Dissertation Chapter Workshop---\"The Queer Anxiety of John Addington Symonds\"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Nineteenth Century Forum to provide feedback on member Ana Popovic's work-in-progress! Email Dana Moss (danamoss@umich.edu)\, Elizabeth Reese (eareese@umich.edu) or Emma Soberano (soberano@umich.edu) for pre-circulated chapter.\nChapter Abstract: \nIn this essay\, I read John Addington Symonds' Memoirs and personal correspondences as textual repositories of queer anxiety. I focus on Symonds' recollections about living in fear of being discovered and publicly humiliated\, and I argue that queer anxiety is a structure of feeling constitutive of the homosexual closet. Examining his correspondence with Havelock Ellis and Richard von Krafft-Ebing\, I reveal that Symonds theorized his affective life and developed a notion of the cultural origins of queer anxiety. With this\, he sought to challenge the psychiatric definitions of homosexual neurosis as a congenital condition and dispute the scientific theories of homosexuality as illness. His autotheoretical contributions\, however\, were dismissed by sexologists as subjective inferences inadmissible to scientific epistemologies: as the object of the medical gaze\, the anxious homosexual could speak\, but he could never have the last word.

SUMMARY:Other:Single Atom Logic for Skeletal Editing
DESCRIPTION:Reactions which can manipulate the connectivity of the molecular skeleton are\nunderexplored as tools for late-stage functionalization\, in part because their\nimplementation has been hindered by their often nonintuitive retrosynthetic logic. This\npresentation will cover selected transformations discovered in our laboratory which\naddress this challenge by enabling single-atom changes to aliphatic and aromatic\nsystems through the insertion and deletion of single heavy atoms (C\,N\,O\, etc.)\, as well\nas more complex manipulations leveraging combinations of these elementary\ntransformations. Our approach to this problem is modality-agnostic\, drawing from a\nwide range of reactive species and synthetic disciplines (organometallic chemistry\,\nreagent design\, photochemistry). Applications to late-stage functionalization and\ndiversification of complex pharmaceutically relevant compounds as well as unique\nopportunities for synthesis will be presented alongside mechanistic findings.\nMark Levin (University of Chicago)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The omega-Vaught's Conjecture
DESCRIPTION:Robert Vaught conjectured that the number of countable models of any given list of axioms must be either countable or continuum\, but never in between. Despite all the work that has gone into this conjecture over the past sixty years\, it remains open. It is one of the most well-known\, long-standing open questions in mathematical logic. We introduce the omega-Vaught's conjecture\, a strengthening of Vaught's conjecture for infinitary logic. We believe that a structural proof of Vaught's conjecture for infinitary logic would actually be a proof of the omega-Vaught's conjecture. Furthermore\, a counterexample to the omega-Vaught's conjecture would likely contain ideas helpful in constructing a counterexample to Vaught's conjecture.\n\nWe prove the omega-Vaught's conjecture for linear orderings\, a strengthening of Vaught's conjecture for linear orderings originally proved by Steel. The proof notably differs from Steel's proof (and any other previously known proof of Vaught's conjecture for linear orderings) in that it makes no appeal to lemmas from higher computability theory or descriptive set theory.\n\nIn this talk I will assume minimal background knowledge on Vaught's conjecture and spend some time going over the needed foundational information. Through this discussion\, we will naturally arrive at the definition of the omega-Vaught's conjecture and I will explain some of the main tools used in the linear order proof. I will focus on highlighting a concrete\, plausible\, potential path to a proof of Vaught's conjecture.\n\nThis talk is based on joint work with Antonio Montalban.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Copernicus Lecture. Survivors Saving Survivors
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Annual Copernicus Lecture will feature two presentations on how JCC Krakow has organized volunteers to aid Ukrainian refugees who fled to Poland. Following the presentations\, the two speakers will join a conversation led by CCPS Director Geneviève Zubrzycki.\n\n\"In the Shadow of Auschwitz: How JCC Krakow is Rebuilding Jewish Life in Poland and Supporting Ukrainian Refugees\" \n\nJCC Krakow (est.2008) is the vibrant center of reborn Jewish life in Kraków\, with over 850 members. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24\, 2022\, it quickly morphed into one of Kraków’s most important humanitarian aid centers\, providing services to over 150\,000 Ukrainian refugees to date. In this talk\, JCC Krakow CEO Jonathan Ornstein will discuss the center's mission to rebuild Jewish communal life in the shadow of Auschwitz\, and the impact of the Jewish community’s work with Ukrainian refugees.\n \n\"Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland\"\n\nIn April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is tikkun olam\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. Fishman will discuss his experience and the accompanying exhibit--on display in Weiser Hall in March and April--that shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nJonathan Ornstein is the Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Community Centre of Krakow. The JCC boasts over 850 Jewish members\, welcomes 10\,000 visitors a month and has become one of Poland’s most visible signs of Jewish revival. Ornstein created the annual Ride For The Living and Holocaust Survivor Day\, two global initiatives with tens of thousands of participants. Prior to occupying his post at the JCC\, Ornstein lectured in Modern Hebrew at Jagiellonian University\, founded the “Gesher” association for Polish-Israeli dialogue\, and is a founding member of the Krakow Association of Christians and Jews where he serves as vice president.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day.Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time\, Life\, Fortune\, Newsweek\, The London Sunday Times\, The Economist* and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\; the United Nations\; POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.
