SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Can Trade Policy Mitigate Climate Change?
DESCRIPTION:Trade policy is often cast as a solution to the free-riding problem in international climate agreements. This paper uncovers the extent to which trade policy can deliver on this promise. We introduce abatement technology and carbon externality into a multi-country\, multi-industry quantitative trade model. Our framework accommodates a rich set of policy considerations\, including firm delocation\, multilateral carbon leakage\, and returns to scale in production and abatement. By deriving simple analytical formulas for optimal carbon\, production\, and border taxes\, we are able to quantify the reduction in CO 2 emissions under two prominent propos- als that combine carbon pricing with trade policy. First\, we show that carbon border taxes can replicate at most 1% of the CO 2 reduction attainable under global climate cooperation. By comparison\, Nordhaus ’s ( 2015 ) climate club proposal can foster global climate cooperation and reduce global CO 2 emissions by up to 61%. This successful outcome hinges on both the US and EU committing to the climate club as core members\, using their collective trade penalties to enforce climate cooperation by reluctant governments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSCS Seminar: Can Governance be Reconciled with Uncertainty in Machine Learning? Challenges and Opportunities concerning Accountability and Variance
DESCRIPTION:*This is a THURSDAY seminar*\n\nAbstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) researchers are confronted daily with the reality that our field has become a stand-in in popular discourse for a variety of public anxieties\, political debates\, and metaphysical questions about human nature and intelligence. Among such weighty topics\, it can be easy to neglect the importance of low-level engineering decisions and infrastructure in AI/ML technology — the realities of implementing algorithms in code\, deploying systems at scale\, reckoning with computational resource constraints\, and numerous other empirical concerns that complicate theory (both statistical and legal) in practice.\n\nThis talk will explore how variance introduces arbitrariness into AI/ML\, which in turn complicates system reliability and concrete\, actionable notions of accountability. While the details of variance may seem mundane in comparison to debates about the essence of intelligence\, they are in fact responsible for powering the technology — intelligent or not — that is reshaping the contours of fundamental rights and institutions. This talk will clarify these connections by examining how variance is central to the function of AI/ML systems\, and moreover\, is inextricable from how these systems reproduce existing harms\, such as racial discrimination\, and bring about emergent behaviors that create novel problems for due process in the law.\n\nBio:\nA. Feder Cooper is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Cornell University and Rising Star in EECS (MIT\, 2021)\, working at the interface of uncertainty\, reliability\, accountability\, and ethics in computing. Cooper researches empirically motivated\, theoretically grounded problems in Bayesian inference\, model selection\, and deep learning\, and has published numerous papers at top AI/ML conferences (e.g.\, NeurIPS and AISTATS). In bringing this work to bear on tech policy and ethics\, Cooper engages methods from the law and social sciences\, and has had work featured in interdisciplinary computing venues (e.g.\, FAccT) and tech law journals (e.g.\, Colorado Tech Law Journal). Much of this work has been recognized with spotlight and contributed talk awards.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Betting on the Farm: Institutional Change in Japanese Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend this event via Zoom\, please register at http://myumi.ch/6N9z9\n\nThis lecture will explore variations in strategic change among local agricultural cooperatives in the context of demographic and economic crises in the Japanese countryside. Why do some co-ops effectively adapt to shifting market forces\, while others do not? And what do the answers to this question reveal about the future of Japanese agriculture? This lecture is based on the book *Betting on the Farm: Institutional Change in Japanese Agriculture*\, co-authored by Prof. Maclachlan and Prof. Kay Shimizu (Department of Political Science\, University of Pittsburgh)\, published by Cornell University Press in 2022.\n \n Patti Maclachlan received her Ph.D. in comparative politics from Columbia University and is now Professor of Government and the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. A student of political economy and interest group politics in Japan\, her publications include *Consumer Politics in Postwar Japan: The Institutional Boundaries of Citizen Activism* (Columbia University Press\, 2002)\; *The Ambivalent Consumer: Questioning Consumption in East Asia and The West* (Cornell University Press\, 2006)\, co-edited with Sheldon Garon\; *The People’s Post Office: The History and Politics of the Japanese Postal System*\, 1871–2010 (Harvard University East Asia Center\, 2011)\; and the aforementioned *Betting on the Farm: Institutional Change in Japanese Agriculture*. Prof. Maclachlan has served on the U.S.–Japan Friendship Commission\, the U.S.–Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON)\, the board of trustees of the *Journal of Japanese Studies*\, and the American Advisory Council of the Japan Foundation.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Other:DEI @ Work Book Discussion | Laura Huang's \"Edge: Turning Adversity into Advantage\"
DESCRIPTION:\"In an ideal world\, we’d succeed based on our actual skills and performance. But in the real world\, subtle perceptions and stereotypes – about appearance\, race\, gender\, experience and more – color others’ perceptions. The result might be that your hard work isn’t noticed or appreciated\, your effort doesn’t lead to proportional rewards and your good ideas aren’t taken seriously. But it doesn’t have to be that way. As Harvard Business School Professor Laura Huang has discovered\, there’s a way to flip stereotypes and obstacles in your favor. Drawing on compelling case studies and her groundbreaking research on overcoming bias\, Huang explains that by finding your edge\, you can turn perceived disadvantages into real strengths – and into real success.\" [Center for Positive Organizations] This virtual discussion is open to all -- but please register to receive the Zoom link prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LACS Across Campus Interdisciplinary Events Series. Political Elites\, Misinformation\, and Mobilization: Evidence from Brazil
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation is a growing concern among the public and political elites. Yet we still lack a good understanding of the political effects of misinformation. We argue that misinformation contains politically motivated content that sends unambiguous signals in favor or against a political group\, thus increasing the salience of political identities and making individuals more oriented towards political and partisan goals. Consequently\, disseminating misinformation benefits politicians because this type of story is effective at mobilizing voters. We empirically test this argument using novel observational and experimental data from Brazil. We show that politicians' posts that contain misinformation have higher levels of seemingly positive interactions with social media users in Brazil. Furthermore\, respondents who are exposed to misinformation show a lower willingness to participate in campaign-related activities in favor of the target of the misinformation and have lower levels of affect regarding that target. Although the effects we find are small\, they indicate that misinformation may pay off by damaging the target of misinformation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Robotics DEI Seminar: Post-Publication Name Change Policies\, Why they Matter\, and Whether they Work
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nMany academics and scientists\, particularly those who are trans\, have publications under more than one name. This talk will argue why it is important to allow authors to (silently) correct their names on previous publications\, how we went from almost no publisher allowing this to proper policies at thousands of publication venues in just a few years\, and what's still missing. We'll also talk about issues with third-party tools like Google Scholar\, and take a look at how effective all of this is in getting authors to be cited by the right name.\n\nBio\nDanica Sutherland is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia and a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at Amii\, doing research in machine learning (particularly representation learning\, kernel methods\, statistical testing\, and learning theory). More relevantly for this talk\, she is a core organizer at Queer in AI\, a member of the Name Change Policy Working Group\, and has worked to set up name change policies in machine learning venues for both her own benefit and others'.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aspects of Disgust and Rabbinic Judaism
DESCRIPTION:In the study of Rabbinic Judaism (200-700 CE)\, the emotion of disgust has received minimal attention. Yet disgust plays a role in almost every category of rabbinic law and thought\, including dietary regulations\, impurity\, sacrifices\, forbidden sex\, divorce\, prayer\, social relations with gentiles and “Others\,” and ethical character. This lecture begins by discussing theoretical aspects of disgust and then surveys the ways disgust impacts these different dimensions of rabbinic Judaism. It concludes by charting some questions for further study and productive avenues for further research.\n\nThis is a hybrid event in 2022 South Thayer Building.\nZoom Registration https://myumi.ch/MrzeV

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Book Talk: \"The Tragedy of Heterosexuality\"
DESCRIPTION:The Ethnographic Methods and Gender & Sexuality Workshops host a book talk with Jane Ward\, Professor of Feminist Studies at the University of California\, Santa Barbara\n\nBook Title: \"The Tragedy of Heterosexuality\"\n\nIn \"The Tragedy of Heterosexuality\"\, Jane Ward critiques one of the basic premises of the mainstream LGBT rights movement—that heterosexuality is easier than queerness—by asking for whom\, and under what conditions\, is straightness easier. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork\, archival research\, and cultural studies methods\, Ward examines the 20th-century emergence of a “heterosexual repair industry”—a self-help empire designed to romanticize and ease heterosexual misery while eliding attention to heteropatriarchy and the queer\, feminist interventions poised to undo it. In this talk\, Ward takes her analysis in new directions\, pointing to the global implications of heterosexual misery by analyzing the global “anti-gender” (or “gender critical”) movement and the collective anxiety about gender and sexuality that animates it. Ward conceptualizes “gender critical” projects as expressions of hetero-paranoia and psychic dissonance aimed at reconciling the paradoxes of modern heterosexuality\, and offers a feminist assessment of these projects' trajectories.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Jamil Zaki\nThursday\, March 23\, 2023\n2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET\nFree\, registration required to obtain login information\n\nEvent link: \nhttps://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/the-war-for-kindness-building-empathy-in-a-fractured-world/\n\nPositive Links:\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders.\n\nAbout the talk: \nEmpathy is in short supply. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us. Studies show that we are less caring than we were even thirty years ago. In 2006\, Barack Obama said that the United States was suffering from an “empathy deficit.” Since then\, things seem to have only become worse—but it doesn’t have to be this way.\n\nJoin us for a virtual fireside chat with Stanford University Professor Jamil Zaki as he discusses his groundbreaking book\, The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World\, with host Ethan Kross. You’ll learn about Zaki’s cutting-edge research\, including experiments from his lab\, showing that empathy is not a fixed trait—something we’re born with or not—but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort. Zaki will share stories of people who embody this new perspective\, fighting for kindness in the most difficult of circumstances. And you will learn ways to work on and build your own empathy—the same way you’d strengthen a muscle. \n\nAbout Zaki:\nJamil Zaki is a tenured associate professor of psychology at Stanford University. His research spans a number of domains\, including social influence\, prosocial behavior\, and especially empathy (see Stanford Social Neuroscience Laboratory for details). He has pioneered a new perspective on empathy as a learnable skill\, and much of his work focuses on training individuals\, groups\, and organizations to empathize more effectively. \n\nDr. Zaki received his BA in cognitive neuroscience from Boston University and his PhD in psychology from Columbia University and conducted postdoctoral research at the Harvard Center for Brain Science. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles and received research and teaching awards from the Social and Affective Neuroscience Society\, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology\, the Cognitive Neuroscience Society\, the Society for Neuroscience\, the American Psychological Association\, the Association for Psychological Science\, Harvard University\, and Stanford University. In 2019 he was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)\, the U.S. Government’s highest honor for researchers at his career stage.\n\nIn addition to his academic work\, Dr. Zaki is active in outreach and public communication of science. He has written for outlets including The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, The Wall Street Journal\, Harvard Business Review\, and The New Yorker. In 2019\, he published his first book\, The War for Kindness\, which NPR called a “wide-ranging\, practical guide to making the world better.” \n\nHost:\nEthan Kross\, Faculty Associate\, Center for Positive Organizations\; Professor of Psychology and Management & Organizations\, University of Michigan\n\nSeries Sponsors:\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies\, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2022-23 Positive Links Speaker Series.\n\nSeries Promotional Partners:\nAdditionally\, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:We Are Not Powerless
DESCRIPTION:We find ourselves living in another year of ever-intensifying anti-LGBTQIA2+ violence. But\, as Audre Lorde said to the 1989 graduates of Oberlin College\, “... I do have hope. To face the realities of our lives is not a reason for despair—despair is a tool of your enemies. Facing the realities of our lives gives us motivation for action. For you are not powerless.”\n\nHighlighting some of this powerful resistance\, this event builds on the Spark series\, \"Living an LGBTQIA2+ Life: Enacting Health Justice for a Flourishing Future.\" The panel will discuss some of the many ways that LGBTQIA2+ people: \n\nleverage the strengths of their identities and communities to center their mental health and wellbeing\;\nthrive within their interpersonal relationships and family lives\; and\, \nexperience immense joy\, pleasure and delight. \n\nWe hope this event will spark something in you\, some curiosity to start new conversations with those around you about how to better support and resource LGBTQIA2+ people during this time of global trauma from war\, climate disasters\, food apartheid\, a pandemic\, and anti-Black\, anti-LGBTQIA+\, and xenophobic legislation. Ultimately\, we hope you leave ready to work with us to chart a path toward a new\, flourishing future.\n\nStart now by registering to attend this event\, and then continue the conversation through June with The Sexploration Project team as they convene community members\, advocates\, providers\, and scholars for a series of follow-up roundtable discussions.\n\nConfirmed Speakers: \n- David B. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Finite-State Markov-Chain Approximations: A Hidden Markov Approach (coauthored with Sean McCrary)
DESCRIPTION:This paper proposes a novel finite-state Markov chain approximation method for Markov processes with continuous support. The method can be used for both uni- and multivariate processes\, as well as non-stationary processes such as those with a life-cycle component. The method is based on minimizing the information loss between a misspecified approximating model and the true data generating process. In contrast to existing methods\, we provide both an optimal grid and transition probability matrix. We provide guidance on how to select the optimal number of grid points. The method outperforms existing methods in several dimensions\, including parsimoniousness. We compare the performance of our method to existing methods through the lens of an asset-pricing model\, and a life-cycle consumption-savings model. We find the choice of the discretization method matters for the accuracy of the model solutions\, the welfare costs of risk\, and the amount of wealth inequality a life-cycle model can generate.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES/SLL Book Talk. Everyday War: The Conflict Over Donbas\, Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainians have responded to Russia's aggression against their country in consequential ways. In her presentation\, Greta Uehling will discuss the highly conscious and creative ways non-combatants engage in what she calls \"everyday war.\" Based on her ethnographic research in Ukraine\, Uehling will describe how this everyday war prompted moral thinking about human vulnerabilities. She will explore the improvised ethics of care that arise in a context in which moral rules and international humanitarian law have been upended. Uehling’s recently released book and her talk will demonstrate the insights that can be gained when studies of war and conflict include consideration of families\, friendships\, and subjective experience.\n \n Greta Uehling is a cultural anthropologist whose current project explores the subjective experience of military conflict in Ukraine. In 2014\, Uehling received a Fulbright scholar grant that enabled her to do ethnographic fieldwork over three summers in Ukraine and lead to the publication of \"Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas\, Ukraine\" (Cornell University Press\, 2023). The book bridges the fields of anthropology\, international relations\, political geography\, and peace and conflict studies. A CREES faculty associate\, Uehling teaches for the Program in International and Comparative Studies and Anthropology at the University of Michigan.\n \n This lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/1AgeV.\n \n If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: #Findthatlizard: ecology\, science outreach\, and supporting underrepresented groups in herpetology and natural resources
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nIn this presentation I'll discuss 1) the biological responses of riparian species facing climate change\, 2) the barriers preventing Black women from entering natural resource careers\, and 3) alternative educational approaches that could encourage Black girls to pursue careers in natural resources. First\, I investigated the impact of stream drying on riparian lizards in southeastern Arizona. Although this study did not detect aquatic invertebrates as significant prey items for our study species\, it is likely they are benefiting at least indirectly from stream water. Second\, we examined barriers experienced by Black women and found three primary types of barriers they face are structural\, socioeconomic\, and cultural. Finally\, I developed: Black (girls) Outside Leadership Development (BOLD). We found that it's crucial to provide middle school aged Black girls with experiences to learn about natural resources careers and the resources to pursue these careers when they are ready.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exploring Early Origins of Cognitive Decline: The St. Louis Baby Teeth Study
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in-person for a seminar highlighting environmental research. Marc Weisskopf's research interests mostly come from his background in neurobiology. He is interested in how environmental factors affect the nervous system\, as well as the epidemiology of neurologic disorders. Current areas of his work include how environmental exposures relate to:\n * Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)\n * Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)\n * Mental health\n * Cognitive function/Alzheimer’s disease (AD)\n * Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)\nSome examples of his current work include exploring how exposure to toxicants (e.g.\, lead\, manganese\, and air pollution) affect cognitive function and psychiatric symptoms\; how air pollution and other toxicants relate to autism spectrum disorder (ASD)\; and how toxicant exposures like formaldehyde and lead relate to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In addition\, he has a large study in Israel and Denmark to explore the relationship of currently used medications to ALS. He is also very interested in issues of epidemiological methods and causal inferences as they relate to his work.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Density Function Theory (DFT) and Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) Methods for Gas Phase Chemistry and Magnetic Materials
DESCRIPTION:To obtain accurate reaction barriers for gas phase chemistry the most widely used and reliable method is coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) theory. Although this method was developed more than 4 decades ago\, it has been difficult to come up with alternatives that outperform it. In this talk I will present a QMC method\, called auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo\, that is able to systematically improve upon CCSD(T) and deliver chemical accuracy. I will review recent developments that have enabled this\, including the ability to: cheaply and systematically improve the quality of results\, obtain properties (other than just energies) and scale up to large systems at a cost that is linear in the system size. \n\nIn the second part of the talk I will present our recent work on understanding magnetism\, which is a ubiquitous phenomenon that is often found in systems ranging from metalloenzymes to correlated quantum materials. However\, describing it theoretically with sufficient accuracy remains one of the outstanding challenges for electronic structure theory. The difficulty can be traced back to the simultaneous presence of strong electron correlation and large relativistic effects. In extended systems\, the presence of an Avogadro's number of electrons further complicates the matter. I will begin by describing some of the algorithms that have been developed in my group to tackle these challenges. For example\, we can now perform efficient hybrid DFT calculations in periodic systems\, we can also treat relativistic effects such as spin orbit coupling on an equal footing with electron correlation. By using these techniques in concert\, we will study the electronic structure of magnetic systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Virtual Webinar: The US COVID-19 County Policy Database: a novel resource to support pandemic-related research
DESCRIPTION:It is increasingly recognized that policies have played a role in both alleviating and exacerbating the health and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. While prior work has focused on characterizing and analyzing the effects of federal and state policies\, there has been limited systematic evaluation of variation in U.S. local (i.e.\, county) COVID-19-related policies. This virtual webinar introduces the U.S. COVID-19 County Policy (UCCP) Database\, whose objective is to systematically gather\, characterize\, and assess variation in U.S. county-level COVID-19-related policies. Data collection is still ongoing for this NIH and PCORI-funded database. Dr. Hamad will describe the data collection methods and some preliminary results. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Dynamic communication networks between regulatory T cells and mesenchymal stromal cells regulate muscle repair and regeneration
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nTissue repair and regeneration require a temporally coordinated immune response to clear affected areas and rebuild tissue architecture. To study the dynamic regulation of muscle repair\, we generated a time-resolved single-cell RNA sequencing dataset of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in a mouse model of skeletal muscle injury. We built a computational tool to predict the dynamic cellular communication networks between these cell types and found distinct communication pathways during different phases of repair. Using a combination of in vivo CRISPR and genetic mouse models\, we validated these interactions and identified novel communication pathways that regulate tissue regeneration.\n\n \n\nShort Bio:\n\nDr. Andrés Muñoz-Rojas is originally from Mexico City. He has a degree in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Andrés got his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Yale University\, where he worked with Dr. Kathryn Miller-Jensen using single-cell secretion and transcription technologies to study macrophage polarization in vitro and in tumor microenvironments. He then joined the lab of Diane Mathis at Harvard Medical School as a Postdoctoral Fellow to study tissue immunology and explore the role of Tregs in regulating tissue function.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Communities\, Rural Economies\, and Diet in Bronze Age and Iron Age Greece
DESCRIPTION:Traditional accounts of the transition from Bronze Age to Iron Age in Greece identified a considerable drop in population after the demise of the palaces (around 1200/1150 BCE) followed\, it was argued\, by less arable farming\, which led to a 'pastoral economy' in the early Iron Age. This picture was believed to be supported by the high value placed on livestock and near-eating in Homeric epic. While this view has recently changed among specialists\, many outdated elements remain embedded in current scholarship. Debates over climate change's role in the disruptions that took place at this time also sometimes reflect these old\, inaccurate narratives.\n\nThis lecture deploys archaeobotanical evidence and stable isotope analysis to demonstrate that in the Greek Iron Age\, people continued to depend on plant-based diets supplemented by some meat and dairy. Although\, expectably\, there is considerable regional variation\, relatively small-scale mixed farming agrarian regimes predominated during the Iron Age. It is evident that people in the Iron Age did not adopt pastoral lifestyles\, keep more animals\, or increase meat consumption. Instead\, the data demonstrate the longevity of 'the Mediterranean diet' in its many variations and reveals some of the values people had over the long term attached to food.\n\nLin Foxhall is a Rathbone Professor of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at the University of Liverpool. She also serves as Editor of the Journal of Hellenic Studies (Cambridge University Press). Previously she was Dean of the School of Histories\, Languages and Cultures at Liverpool and led the University-wide Heritage Research Theme\, Professor of Greek Archaeology and History at the University of Leicester\, and Head of the School of Archaeology and Ancient History\, where she played a significant role leading the team that discovered the body of King Richard III. She has held posts at St Hilda’s College\, Oxford\, and University College London\, and Visiting Professorships in Germany\, Denmark\, and the USA. She studied at Bryn Mawr College\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and the University of Liverpool\, England.\n\nAn active field archaeologist\, Lin has led and participated in collaborative research projects in Greece and Southern Italy. She has written extensively on agriculture\, rural economies\, landscapes\, land use\, material culture\, and gender in the ancient Mediterranean\, especially the Greek world\, focusing on the time between the Bronze Age and Classical periods.\n\nIf you can't join us in person\, join us online. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Semianr: An explicit formula for the Benjamin-Ono equation
DESCRIPTION:The Benjamin-Ono equation is a dispersive PDE in one space dimension introduced by T.B. Benjamin in 1967 as a model for long internal gravity waves in a two-layer fluid with infinite depth. It admits a Lax pair involving Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space. I will explain how this structure leads to an explicit formula for the general solution in terms of its initial datum\, in both cases of periodic boundary conditions and of solutions on the line decaying at infinity. Applications to low regularity wellposedness and to the zero-dispersion limit will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The 2023 Converse-Miller Lecture
DESCRIPTION:“Elections\, Authoritarianism\, Partisan Polarization in the US”\n\nThe increasing polarization of the Democratic and Republican parties in the US has been well documented but a number of different explanations for it have been advanced. Based on analyses of almost 30 years of election survey data\, I show how the two parties have sharply diverged on the core trait of authoritarianism. The relationship between authoritarianism and vote choice has increased substantially over time. Perhaps more importantly\, authoritarianism has become more strongly related to partisan identification which has long-term implications for political conflict. I also show that this increased influence of authoritarianism in American politics is largely a result of a few key presidential elections that accelerated the sorting of partisans by levels of authoritarianism.\n\nThe lecture will be followed by a reception in the ISR Atrium.\n\nConnect on Zoom with passcode 105691.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:When Democracy Refuses to Die: Evaluating a Training Program for New Politicians
DESCRIPTION:Brazil has experienced democratic backsliding in recent years\, a process often blamed on rising distrust of a political class marred by corruption scandals. This phenomenon is also present in several other nations in both the developing and the developed world. In response\, several non-profit organizations have emerged with training programs designed to select and train a new class of political leaders. But whether this response by civil society can succeed in renewing the political class remains uninvestigated. In this paper\, we evaluate the largest non-profit\, non-partisan training program for aspiring politicians in Brazil. Using a judge-specific regression discontinuity design\, we estimate the effects of the program on aspirants deciding to run and\, conditional on running\, on their electoral performance during the 2020 local elections. We find that the program increased the likelihood that the aspirant ran for office\, and that it led to modest improvements in their campaign funds and vote shares. We do not\, however\, find any evidence that these aspirants are more likely to get elected suggesting that the program has yet to have any meaningful impact on Brazil’s political selection. Our estimates inform program targets by identifying how large an effect on vote shares and finance improvements would be required for the program to impact political selection.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 23rd at 7:00 PM in the Duderstadt Center Basement for an informative and engaging keynote speech with Kate Rubin\, an experienced and accomplished theatre artist known for her dynamic leadership and collaborative approach. \n\nShe has been working with William Head on Stage (WHoS) for the past 17 years\, the longest-standing prison theatre company in Canada. WHoS is one of the theatre companies highlighted in Ashley Lucas’s book Prison Theatre and the Global Crisis of Incarceration (Methuen Drama 2021). \n\nKate will share her distinct perspective on the impact that this work has had on the men\, the audiences\, the institution\, and herself as a facilitator. She will delve into the creative process that she and her colleagues have developed over the years and discuss the challenges and successes of this work. \n\nDon't miss this opportunity to gain insight into the world of prison theatre and its ability to foster specific skills\, establish connections\, cultivate empathy and understanding\, and promote personal growth and expression. Discover this innovative prison theatre company run by the men themselves.\n\nPresented with support from the Prison Creative Arts Project\, U-M Residential College\, and Center for World Performance Studies.\n\n*The University of Michigan College of Literature\, Science and the Arts (LSA) greatly values inclusion and access for all. SUMMARY:Performance:Paul Thorn
DESCRIPTION:Raised in Tupelo\, Mississippi\, among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis Presley decades before\, Paul Thorn has rambled down back roads\, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Duran on national television\, signed with and been dropped by a major label\, performed on stages with Bonnie Raitt\, Mark Knopfler\, Sting\, and John Prine among many others\, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet relatable music of our time. With 30 years of writing\, touring\, and entertaining under his belt\, he shows no sign of slowing down\, still breaking genre barriers and topping charts\, putting a new twist on his already entertaining live show. Paul is an Ark favorite who never fails to connect with Michigan audiences\, and he comes to Michigan with a new album\, “Never Too Late to Call\,” recorded at Sam Phillips Studi in Memphis. The album\, Paul says\, “features music from a man who is with the “right one” and is happy to be there.”
