DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. DESCRIPTION:The 11th anniversary Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium will take place at the Michigan League Ballroom and via Zoom on Friday\, March 24 and Saturday\, March 25\, 2023. The theme of the symposium is \"Computational Psychiatry: From Mental Circuits to Mental Illness.\"\n\nPsychiatry has long emphasized lists of signs and symptoms for categorizing\, diagnosing\, and treating mental disorders. However\, the inner workings of the mind/brain that produce and explain these signs and symptoms have remained obscure. The 2023 Weinberg Symposium examines “Computational Psychiatry”\, an upstart field that aims to revolutionize psychiatry by addressing this gap. Theorists in this new field build computational models that explain in a step-by-step way how the mind/brain performs key mental functions\, and they then demonstrate how signs and symptoms of mental disorders arise from altered “parameter settings” of these models. The Symposium features five leading theorists in computational psychiatry who will present their latest research on topics including delusional belief in schizophrenia and negativity bias in depressive disorders. DESCRIPTION:The *27th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons* showcases the hard work and talents of artists incarcerated in Michigan prisons. \n\nThe work is by men and women from all 25 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 24 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison. \n\nThis year there are 645 works in two and three dimensions\, including portraits\, tattoo imagery\, landscapes\, fantasy\, and wildlife as well as images about incarceration and visions that are entirely new. \n\nWe invite you to enjoy the work and\, if you like\, make a purchase. DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Visiting artists will provide an audition technique masterclass and hold a talkback with voice students on opera programs. Guest professionals include:\nLee Anne Myslewski\, Vice President of Opera and Classical Programming\, Wolf Trap Foundation\, Head of Wolf Trap Opera \nBrian Speck\, Director of the Houston Grand Opera Studio\nKristin Cowdin\, President and Artist Manager at Sempre Artists\n\nBIOS\nLee Anne Myslewski\, Vice President of Opera and Classical Programming\, joined Wolf Trap in 2006\, and has cultivated new partnerships and programs to uphold the company’s widespread acclaim as the country’s most venerated summer training program for emerging artists. She oversees all aspects of Wolf Trap Opera\, an artist-centric program whose alumni are not only singing in every opera house in the nation\, but also in the most prestigious houses in the world – including The Metropolitan Opera\, La Scala\, Vienna Staatsoper\, Komische Oper Berlin\, Sydney Opera House and Deutsche Opera Berlin. She has participated in the casting and programming of operatic productions for fifteen years\, and has heard over 8\,000 live auditions. She is a frequent adjudicator for competitions\, including The Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Competition\, and has been a visiting/virtual lecturer at a number of universities\, including Rice University\, Indiana University’s O’Neill School of Public Policy\, Carnegie Mellon University\, Shepherd University and University of Maryland. She conceived of the Untrapped series of programming in 2016 which has featured artistic partnerships with the Shakespeare Theatre\, Taffety Punk\, Halcyon\, AMP at Strathmore\, Children’s National Medical Center and The Phillips Collection\, as well as an ongoing partnership with the National Orchestral Institute.\nIn addition\, Lee Anne oversees Wolf Trap’s classical music programming\, which includes Chamber Music at The Barns\;. she started the Artistic Advisor position for the series\, with nationally recognized artists including The Emerson String Quartet\, Jonathan Biss\, Lara St. John and Wu Han. She also oversees the long-standing partnership between Wolf Trap and the National Symphony Orchestra.\nLee Anne is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland. She is co-chair of the Artistic Services Committee and serves on the executive board of Opera America.\n\nBrian Speck is Director of the Houston Grand Opera Studio\, where he is responsible for selection\, training\, and career development of the Studio’s singers and pianist-coaches\, and serves on the company’s senior management team. He hears hundreds of young artists each year in auditions and advises singers on their artistic and career development. He is a frequent adjudicator in vocal competitions\, including the Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition\, the National Opera Association’s Carolyn Bailey Argento Competition\, the Cooper-Bing Vocal Competition\, Florida Grand Opera’s Young Patronesses of Opera Competition\, Shreveport Opera’s Singer of the Year\, and HGO’s own Eleanor McCollum Competition. He currently serves as co-chair of OPERA America’s Performer Development Network and spearheaded an effort to create a virtual audition process for training programs across the opera industry. Prior to his current position\, Mr. Speck served as HGO’s Company Manager\, leading HGO’s department of Rehearsal Planning and Artist Services to coordinate all day-to-day rehearsal activities of the company and support its guest artists. He previously held positions with the Aspen Opera Center and Houston Public Media. Mr. Speck holds degrees in voice performance from Pepperdine University and Rice University.\n\nKristin Cowdin brings over seventeen years of dedicated experience in artist management to Sempre Artists\, of which she is the founding President and Artist Manager. Prior to establishing the company\, she was Artist Manager at Guy Barzilay Artists and held previous positions with Barrett Artists and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. She concurrently serves as a consultant for artistic planning for Teatro Nuovo\, working alongside Will Crutchfield\, and previously held the same position at for three seasons at Bel Canto at Caramoor. Committed to nurturing the next generation of singers\, she has been a judge for the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and the vocal competitions of Opera Birmingham\, Fort Worth Opera (Marguerite McCammon)\, Opera Columbus (Irma M. Cooper)\, and has also adjudicated the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Awards. She has given master classes and workshops for young artists programs and training institutions that include Los Angeles Opera\, Wolf Trap Opera\, Utah Opera\, Des Moines Metro Opera\, Seagle Music Colony\, McGill University\, Boston Conservatory\, Potomac Vocal Institute\, Bel Canto in Tuscany\, New World School for the Arts\, National Association of Teachers of Singing\, as well as several times at Classical Singer magazine’s annual convention. Additionally\, she has joined OPERA America as a panelist for its Feedback Auditions and Making Connections series.\nMs. Cowdin is a frequent feature article contributor to Opera magazine\, certified mediator for Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts’ MediateArt program\, and past grant panelist for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. She earned a Master of Arts in performing arts administration from New York University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in music and English from Hollins University\, where she has returned as an invited panelist for the university’s C3: Career Connection Conference. Along the way\, she encounters long-necked plesiosaurs\, giant turtles\, enormous fish\, fierce sharks\, and the most dangerous sea monster of all\, the mosasaur.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. DESCRIPTION:Stephen Upshaw presents a Master Class on viola. Free and open to the public.\nRepertoire includes:  Vieuxtemps\, Bartók\, Hindemith\nAmerican violist Stephen Upshaw regularly appears in festivals around the world. Much in demand as a chamber musician\, he is a member of the award-winning Solem Quartet– recognized as one of the most innovative and adventurous quartets of its generation. \nA noted interpreter of contemporary music\, Stephen is also a member of London’s Riot Ensemble\, winners of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation Ensemble Prize\, whose disc ‘Speak Be Silent’ was selected as one of New Yorker Magazine’s ‘Best Recordings of 2019’. He has worked closely with many of today’s leading composers\, including Max Richter\, John Adams\, Thomas Adès\, George Benjamin and Helmut Lachenmann. Expanding the repertoire of the viola through the commissioning of new music has always been a feature of Stephen’s work. He has taken part in over 300 world premieres including chamber music of Georg Haas and Sally Beamish (alongside the composer) and solo works of Mark Simpson\, Simon Holt\, Michael Finnissy and Errollyn Wallen.\nRecent solo appearances include: Feldman’s complete “The Viola in My Life” at Cafe Oto and “Rothko Chapel” with the New London Chamber Choir\, Jonathan Harvey’s Jubilus and Benjamin Graves’ concerto “Four Façades” with the Riot Ensemble\, and recitals in the Time of Music (Finland)\, Brighton and Little Missenden Festivals\, Kettle’s Yard and the National Gallery.\nStephen has also toured regularly to the USA\, Europe and Asia with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and its music director\, Joshua Bell and works with the Chineke! Orchestra as principal viola and as a member of the chamber players.\nStephen is professor of viola and chamber music at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior Department and plays a 1715 Daniel Parker school viola currently made available to him by the Stradivari Trust.

He's equally—and tremendously on all counts—gifted as a singer\, writer\, and guitarist. Says the Irish Examiner: \"Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear … utterly original … it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated … his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain.\" Peter grew up in Milwaukee\, made his debut on the streets of Dublin\, and moved to Boston\, performing in subways and finally clubs. He has released 18 albums\, and each one brings something new.\n \nLately Peter has been joined in shows by the Milwaukee-based sister duo SistaStrings\, who combine their classical background with R&B and a touch of gospel influence that culminates for a vibey\, lush sound. The Peter Mulvey–SistaStrings pairing has toured recently with Ani DiFranco. With thick\, string harmonies between violin and cello and soulful voices\, SistaStrings takes you on a journey. Formed in 2014 after Chauntee and Monique graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, the sisters began doing string arrangements for local hip-hop artists\, and the rest is history.
