SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections

On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Wieseneck and Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies Spring Symposium\, “Mizrahi Studies at the Intersection”
DESCRIPTION:The Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies is hosting the Wieseneck Symposium\, “Mizrahi Studies at the Intersection\" on March 29-30 in the Michigan League's Michigan Room. The symposium will be followed by a performance by Neta Elkayam and Amit Hai Cohen at 7pm on the 30th. \n\nThis event is a part of the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies theme year “Mizrahim and the Politics of Ethnicity\,” led by co-head fellows Ruth Tsoffar\, U-M Professor of Comparative Literature\, Women’s and Gender Studies\, and Judaic Studies\, and Ella Shohat\, professor of Cultural Studies at New York University. This theme year brings together thirteen scholars from three countries who will explore interdisciplinary and intersectional conversations on the meaning of ethnicity in the study of Mizrahi (Arab-Jewish) culture. The group consists of a dynamic forum of scholars from a variety of disciplines aiming to reflect and further expand\, diversify\, and theorize the discussion of Jewish/Israeli society and culture.\n\nThis symposium aims at addressing some of the key issues raised by Mizrahi studies as conceptualized through a transnational\, transregional\, multidirectional\, and intersectional prism. Rather than producing a Mizrahi subject in isolation\, the symposium seeks to problematize any fixed understanding of Mizrahiness by highlighting the ways this concept is dynamically shaped by class\, race\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, religion\, nation\, and so forth. As such\, the symposium strives to illuminate Mizrahi studies as a critical field not simply about the Mizrahim but also about decolonization of knowledge. It hopes to interrogate established categories by asking what constitutes legitimate knowledge when ways of knowing may themselves have to be reconceptualized in a discursive climate saturated with hierarchical\, exclusionary\, and even violent assumptions? Some additional questions posed by the symposium include: Which methodological paradigms and epistemic frameworks enable the shaping of fragmented memories into a broader and more relational narrative? What kind of obstacles do scholars face in the process of carrying out research involving archival documentation and oral transmission\, when such data collection is entangled in histories of obscuring and silencing? What challenges does an academically normative discourse pose for those writing on subjects that touch on traumatic experiences and memories\, at once personal\, familial\, and communal? And what lessons could be learned from more self-reflexive research practices and coping strategies in terms of future scholarship.\n\nThe participants will also reflect on the symposium in a closed discussion on Friday\, March 31st at Rackham Graduate School.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the departments of Comparative Literature\, Middle East Studies\, Women’s Studies and Gender\, Institute for Research on Women & Gender\, and Anthropology.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: “Embracing Immunodiversity: How Investigating Monocyte Phenotype can Improve Nanotechnology Design and Efficacy”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n With the emergence of immunomodulating nanotechnologies\, cell-based therapies and a growing number of individuals living with one or more pre-existing chronic inflammatory diseases there is an urgent need to understand how immunodiversity—or variation in individual immune responses based on environmental and intrinsic features—effect therapeutic outcomes. My research group develops real-time bioluminescence cellular biosensor systems to explore the temporal and spatial dynamics of monocyte differentiation and polarization following infiltration into tumor\, bacterial/viral infection\, and pre-eclampsia microenvironments. For example\, we explore how environmental stimuli such as GM-CSF and M-CSF effect monocyte phenotype during differentiation into macrophages. In addition\, we use the monocyte biosensors as a diagnostic tool to screen nanotherapeutic libraries for their polarization and/or reprogramming capabilities.\n\n Our studies show differences between naïve and disease-trained monocyte interactions with nanoparticle systems that we believe can be used to reverse engineering nanotechnologies and inform drug pharmacokinetic models. In the long-term\, we hope our exploration of immunodiversity and response to biomaterials increases inclusion of samples used in biomedical research and lead the greater translational successes in the clinic. \n \nBio: \n Elizabeth Wayne is a TED Fellow and Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Elizabeth Wayne works at the interface of immunology and nanoparticle engineering\, by exploring the function of monocytes as a cellular theranostic. Her group designs chitosan-based nanoparticles that can modulate macrophage phenotype under inflammatory contexts. Her group designs monocyte biosensors to enable real-time measurements of macrophage polarization. Currently\, she is applying these concepts to investigate air-pollution\, lung regeneration\, atherosclerosis\, pre-eclampsia\, and cancer. Dr. Wayne’s research has competitively been funding through NSF\, Genentech\, and a prestigious NIH R35 Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award.\n\n Dr. Wayne is a science communicator who uses her platform to discuss the future of immunoengineering and issues related to underrepresented minorities in science. In 2017\, she gave a TED Talk on immunoengineering which currently has been viewed over 1.5 million times. Dr. Wayne was featured in the Super Cool Scientists: A Women in Science Coloring Book. She is also the co-host of the show PhDivas\, a podcast that tells the stories of women in leadership and higher education. Dr. Wayne has been interviewed and written in various platforms including PBS News Hour Brief but Spectacular Series\, Aspen Ideas Health Festival\, Nature Careers\, Nature Medicine\, Bust Magazine\, The Atlantic\, and the LA Times.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: Characterizing past communities to build future ones: *lessons from Caribbean conservation paleobiology *
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nThe Caribbean is one of the most well-studied biodiversity hotspots\, but the diversity of today’s Caribbean is only a fraction of what once existed there\, as natural and anthropogenic processes have contributed to extinction and extirpation across multiple taxonomic groups. Given this long-term history of environmental perturbations and human impacts\, paleobiology is well-suited to inform ongoing conservation needs in the Caribbean\, which continues to be impacted by habitat degradation\, species introductions\, and other global change phenomena. I show how fossil\, archaeological\, and ecological data elucidate patterns of biodiversity loss and resilience\, with direct implications for conservation management. While conservation paleobiology has significant potential in the Caribbean\, it also faces major challenges in implementation\, in part due to colonial histories and practices of parachute science. I summarize how this colonial legacy perpetuates knowledge and resource gaps\, and outline ways in which we can move toward an equitable conservation paleobiology in the Caribbean and elsewhere.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Many-Electron Effects and Light-Matter Interactions at Nanoscale
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will start from introducing a general picture of light-matter interactions in nanoscale materials and the first-principles many-body perturbation approach for calculating excited states\, such as quasiparticles and excitons. Then I will focus on many-electron interactions in two-dimensional (2D) moiré crystals. We propose a way to enhance the crucial moiré potential by manipulating the coupling between quasiparticles and carrier plasmons. Our calculation shows that this mechanism can effectively enhance the quasiparticle moiré potential by a few times of magnitude\, providing an excellent opportunity to control and observe correlated Hubbard physics in 2D moiré crystals. In the second part of the talk\, I will switch to the second-order light-matter interactions in PT-symmetric materials. Using the quantum perturbation theory\, we predict that light with different polarizations can selectively drive sizable charge current or pure spin current in emerging antiferromagnetic 2D structures or topological materials.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Era of Autonomy in Space Exploration – It’s Finally Here!
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nFor decades\, space exploration has conjured visions of advanced technology. However\, for much of our history\, spaceflight has made limited use of autonomy and onboard computational capability. This has changed in the past few years\, particularly at more distant locations or in applications where the number of collaborative sensors is large. This seminar will review the systems trade between ground-in-the-loop and autonomous operations from a risk perspective\, discuss recent advances in space exploration enabled by autonomy\, and highlight the new class of spaceflight missions possible in the coming decade. Recent examples from the speaker’s experience working with the Mars Perseverance\, Ingenuity\, and DART project teams will be referenced.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Robert D. Braun has more than 35 years experience as a space systems engineer\, technologist\, and organizational leader. He has contributed to the formulation\, development\, and operation of multiple space flight missions and is a recognized authority in hypersonics technology and the development of and entry\, descent and landing systems. Dr. Braun presently serves on the executive leadership team of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He previously served as Director for Planetary Science at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder\, a faculty member of the Georgia Institute of Technology\, and on the technical staff of the NASA Langley Research Center. In 2010-2011\, Dr. Braun served as the first NASA Chief Technologist in more than a decade with responsibility for development of the Agency’s technology and innovation policies and programs. He created and led the initial implementation of a spectrum of NASA technology programs designed to mature the capabilities required for our nation’s future in space. Dr. Braun is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, a Fellow of the AIAA and AAS\, and the author or co-author of over 300 technical publications.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology Seminar: Generating the homology of sliding squares in a rectangle
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The configuration space of n ordered unit squares sliding in a p by q rectangle is a subspace of the configuration space of n ordered points in the plane\, which is the classifying space of the pure braid group. The homology of the pure braid group is generated by cycles that have a nice geometric description. To what extent is this true of squares in a rectangle? Small computations suggest that some more intricate generators may be needed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Processes controlling the transition to a seasonally ice-free Arctic Ocean in a warming world\n\nAbstract: Observations show dramatic Arctic sea ice loss and Arctic warming in recent decades. As greenhouse gases increase and the Earth’s surface warms\, projecting when the Arctic Ocean may become ice-free\, and the resulting impacts is of broad interest to those living in the Arctic and beyond. Numerical coupled models are the main tool for making such future projections. Yet\, projecting sea ice loss is hard with these tools because it is challenging to constrain physical process uncertainty\, unpredictable climate variability\, and differences in climate drivers. In this talk\, I will present an overview of research over last decade analyzing processes controlling the transition to a seasonally ice-free Arctic Ocean in a warming world. Motivated by this overview\, I will present recent work published in the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (https://doi.org/10.1029/2021MS002679) in which we analyzed the influence of surface sea ice surface melt on Arctic Ocean phase while also controlling for all other confounding factors such as the amount of global warming and unpredictable climate variability.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Diagnosing disease on a microchip: Finding nanoscale needles in a nanoscale haystack
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The transformative growth in microelectronics in the latter half of the 20th century was fueled fundamentally by the ability to miniaturize complex circuits onto chips. The impact of this has been profound– computing is pervasive and portable and communication is instant and global. My research aims to harness this same engineering approach to solve high impact problems in medical diagnostics. To accomplish this goal my lab develops hybrid microchips\, where microfluidics are built directly on top of semiconductor chips. In this talk I will focus on recent work at Penn on 'digital asays.' Digital assays — in which ultra-sensitive molecular measurements are made by performing millions of parallel experiments in picoliter droplets — have generated enormous enthusiasm due to their single molecule resolution. These assays have incredible untapped potential for disease diagnostics but are currently confined to laboratory settings due to the instrumentation necessary to generate\, control\, and measure tens of millions of droplets. To overcome this challenge\, we are developing a hybrid microelectronic / microfluidic chip to ‘unlock’ droplet-based assays for mobile use. Our microDroplet Fluorescence Detector (µDFD) takes inspiration from cellular networks\, in which phones are identified by their carrier frequency and not their particular location. In collaboration with physicians at The Abramson Cancer Center\, we are demonstrating the power of this approach by developing a multiplexed exosome-based diagnostic for the early detection of pancreatic cancer.\n\nBio: The Issadore lab combines microelectronics\, microfluidics\, nanomaterials\, and machine learning to solve big problems in healthcare. We create miniaturized platforms for the diagnosis of disease\, we develop new platforms to manufacture micro and nanomaterials\, and we dip our toes into an assortment of other areas where we can leverage our engineering training to improve healthcare. This work requires an interdisciplinary approach in which engineers\, scientists\, and physicians work together in teams.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED: EIHS Lecture: Writing Enslaved Women’s Histories from the Crevices of the Archive
DESCRIPTION:This presentation offers an intimate portrait of the life of an enslaved woman\, known as Abba\, who appears multiple times in the diary of a slaveholder in eighteenth-century Jamaica. Abba’s life\, like many others chronicled in the diary\, is incompletely established in the literature\, a pathetic figure overcome by violence\, domination\, and a demanding labor regime. Shifting analytic gaze and narrative voice to the enslaved\, this discussion uncovers enslaved women’s affective creativity and configuration of a life aligned with their maternal and communal values.\n\nSasha Turner is associate professor of history at The Johns Hopkins University and is the author of Contested Bodies: Pregnancy\, Childrearing and Slavery in Jamaica. Professor Turner has received many awards for her research\, including from the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians\, Southern Association of Women Historians\, African American Intellectual History Society\, Association of Black Women Historians\, and North American Conference on British Studies. She is working on a new project on slavery and emotions.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Semianr: Late time tail of waves on dynamic asymptotically flat spacetimes of odd space dimensions
DESCRIPTION:I will present an upcoming work with J. Luk (Stanford)\, where we develop a general method for understanding the late time tail for solutions to wave equations on asymptotically flat spacetimes with odd spatial dimensions\, which is applicable to nonlinear problems on dynamical backgrounds. In addition to its inherent interest\, such information is crucial for studying problems involving the interaction of waves with a spatially localized object\; indeed\, our motivation for developing this method comes from the Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture. I will explain how our method recovers and refines Price's law for linear problems on stationary backgrounds\, and also how it shows that the late time tails are in general different(!) from the linear stationary case in the presence of nonlinearity and/or a dynamical background.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Elements and Edges: Inhabitable and Uninhabitable Worlds in Medieval Encyclopaedias
DESCRIPTION:Encyclopaedias portray the earth as perfectly round\, nestled within concentric circles of the elements. Yet they also present a jagged earth\, with borders between inhabitable and uninhabitable worlds creating geographical divisions that combine in the encyclopaedic environment with natural-historical taxonomies and anthropocentric narratives. This talk will argue that encyclopaedias interrelate concepts of elemental\, human and animal bodies with landscapes shaped by histories of geological change\, empire and epistemological rupture.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“The Musical Death Masks of Gérard Grisey\,” Benjamin R. Levy
DESCRIPTION:A Carrigan Lecture presented by the Department of Music Theory\nAccess the Zoom meeting: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97327821283Meeting ID: 973 2782 1283Passcode: goblue\nDownload Poster PDF\n\nThe Musical Death Masks of Gérard Grisey\nObituaries and official remembrances of the composer Gérard Grisey (1946-98)\, tend to emphasize his fascination with sound\, study of acoustics\, and the focus on temporal process in his music. In many ways they stay close to the composer’s own rhetoric\, especially in his early manifestos propounding these very features as the aesthetic foundation of spectralism\, declaring\, “we are musicians and our model is sound” (Grisey 1984\, 22). But what can we learn from musical tributes written in his memory? In this paper\, I analyze a set of three musical remembrances of Grisey that show different sides of his compositional persona: Philippe Hurel’s Tombeau in memoriam Gérard Grisey (1999)\, György Ligeti’s Hamburg Concerto (1998/99\, revised 2002)\, and Kaija Saariaho’s Message pour Gérard (2000). At first glance\, these works are remarkable for their differences\, representing varied personal connections to the composer himself and a wide range of strategies to emphasize certain musical features as essential parts of his legacy. Upon closer examination\, however\, they also reveal an unexpected through line\, all referencing Grisey’s fascination with non-western musical traditions\, including those of Southeast Asia\, Oceania\, and Central Africa. Grisey’s latent multiculturalism is often ignored or relegated to a fleeting aside in his obituaries\, but once brought to light\, it raises questions about the full range of Grisey’s creative thought and his theoretical work\, as well as about spectralism’s place in the political landscape of post-1968 France and the ways in which this musical movement took shape and spread in its influence and scope. \n \nBenjamin R. Levy is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. His research interests focus on modernist and contemporary music and on connections between music\, literature\, and the arts. He has published widely on the music of György Ligeti\, including the monograph Metamorphosis in Music: The Compositions of György Ligeti in the 1950s and 1960s. He is currently working topics related to the interdisciplinary contexts of spectral music as well as on English translations of The Schoenberg-Webern Correspondence: Selected Letters\, for inclusion in Oxford University Press’s series\, Schoenberg in Words.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tommy Castro & The Painkillers
DESCRIPTION:“The hardest thing to do\,” says internationally beloved soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro\, “is be yourself\, take some chances and bring your fans along with you.” Throughout his long\, constantly evolving career\, guitarist\, singer and songwriter Tommy Castro has always remained true to himself while exploring\, growing and creating new music\, and he has taken his thousands of devoted fans right along with him. Since his solo debut in 1994\, he’s made 16 albums - the last seven for Alligator - each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery\, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll\, each release is solidly built upon Tommy’s unshakable musical foundation - a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues\, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk\, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work. Blues Revue declared\, “Tommy Castro can do no wrong.” Tommy Castro & The Painkillers come to town with a new release\, “A Bluesman Came to Town.”
