The only problem is that the two eldest sons have been at odds since their father passed away and refuse to be in the same room at the same time.\n \nHer big reveal is spoiled when the boys hear via the grapevine about their mother’s pending marriage and come together to voice their disapproval. Now it’s up to Aisha\, her fiancé\, and her daughters-in-law to bring the sons around to her way of thinking using the one thing they can all agree on–the *barakat*. *Barakat*\, an Arabic word meaning blessings\, is a story about celebrating life\, culture\, and the importance of family.\n \nFilm Background & Facts:\n*Barakat* is a 2020 South African family drama film directed by Amy Jephta and produced by Ephraim Gordon. It is the first Afrikaans-language Muslim feature film produced in South Africa. *Barakat*\, an Urdu word meaning “Blessings\,” was told with gentle humanity stemming from filmmakers with lived experience. This is a rare and insightful glimpse into the heart of the Muslim\, Malay\, mixed-race community of Cape Town\, seen through the prism of one family’s travails as they grapple with the ups and downs of life\, love\, and familial relationships in a way that is recognizable and relatable.\n\n\n\n__________________\nThis African Muslim Film Festival is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the African Studies Center\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, the Center for Middle East and North African Studies\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\, the Department of Middle Eastern Studies\, the Department of Political Science\, and the Sawyer Seminar on the Africana Muslim and Genealogies of White Supremacy.\n\n\nVisit http://watch.eventive.org/amff for more details.\n\nWant to hear about similar events from U-M Islamic Studies? SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Other:A Radical Approach to Organic Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:Synthetic chemists need ever better tools to synthesize the molecules of modern life\, from life-changing pharmaceuticals to next generation materials. Further\, there is increasing need for these transformations to be both step and atom efficient and sustainable\, proceeding under mild conditions using earth abundant elements. Here we show how employing open shell intermediates strategically allows for challenging transformations to be achieved directly\, from alkene difunctionalization to carboxylic acid deletion. Importantly\, these reactions make use of earth abundant elements and proceed under mild conditions\, with many being driven by light. Together\, our studies demonstrate the versatility of radical reactions to achieve challenging disconnections that are sustainable and environmentally-responsible. \n \n \nJulian West (Rice University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSCS Seminar: Context Crafts Complex Systems: Proteins\, Parcels\, Pandemics and Prisons
DESCRIPTION:A special seminar on the 10th floor of Weiser Hall.\n\nContext Crafts Complex Systems: Proteins\, Parcels\, Pandemics and Prisons\n\nIn this seminar\, I discuss how “contexts” and “environments” influence the way the biological world functions\, and argue that sub-disciplines within biology should more carefully consider how we interpret and measure their impact. I demonstrate this through various arms of my research program\, including the evolution of proteins associated with antimicrobial resistance\, the shape of epidemics\, and the intersection between science and culture.\n\nC. Brandon Ogbunu is Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. His research takes place at the intersection of evolutionary biology\, genetics\, and epidemiology. He uses experimental evolution\, mathematical modeling\, and computational biology to better understand the underlying causes and consequences of disease\, across scales: from the biophysics of proteins involved in drug resistance to the social determinants driving epidemics at the population level. In doing so\, he aims to develop theory that enriches our understanding of the evolutionary and ecological underpinnings of disease\, while contributing to practical solutions for clinical medicine and public health. He completed his PhD at Yale University in 2010 and postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University and the Broad Institute. He has been the recipient of the UNCF-Merck\, the Broad Institute Diversity Fellowship and the Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. He comes to Yale after two years on the faculty at Brown University. Brandon is also currently a visiting research scientist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Michelangelo Antonioni\, Tourist Snapshots\, and the Politics of the “Backward Scene” 落后镜头 in 1970s China
DESCRIPTION:If you would like to attend via Zoom\, please register at https://myumi.ch/m72mg\n\nThis talk examines how China’s late-Cultural Revolution era campaign against Michelangelo Antonioni’s documentary film \"Chung kuo/Cina\" spilled over into stricter management of foreign tourist photography and production of new forms of tourist literature by state publishers as China’s tourism market expanded in the 1970s. Examining how notions of China’s “backwardness” implicated photographic practices on the ground\, this case study illuminates how government officials regulated tourist photography\, how those regulations were understood by foreign tourists\, and how guides and ordinary citizens entered into the visual discourse of tourism on their own terms.\n \n Gavin Healy is a postdoctoral fellow at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. He completed his PhD at Columbia University in May 2021\, and was a postdoctoral fellow there in the 2021-22 academic year. His current monograph project\, “The Political and Cultural Economy of Sightseeing: Foreign Tourism in the ‘New China’ (1949-1978)\,” examines how personnel within China’s state tourism bureaucracy struggled to balance the use of tourism as a form of political\, historical\, and cultural representation with the demands of developing a revenue-generating service industry in a socialist economy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Hear\, Here: Humanities Up Close
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session. Today: “The Problem of the Refugee Writer” with Hadji Bakara.\n\nAbout the talk: \nIn the first decades of the twentieth-century a new historical figure appeared: the refugee writer. In this talk\, I tell the story of these displaced and stateless writers through the archives of an organization that tried to help them: The P.E.N Refugee Writers Fund. The story of this short-lived and experimental organization\, I argue\, is also the story of how writing became a human right in the wake of the catastrophes of mid-century.\n\nAbout Hadji Bakara: \nHadji Bakara is a 2022-23 Helmut F. Stern Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and assistant professor of English language and literature.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Chiral phonon-spin coupling in hexagonal lattices
DESCRIPTION:The electronic and magnetic properties of solids are fundamentally determined by the crystal structures. When the structure keeps evolving\, the properties are usually determined by the instantaneous lattice configurations\, but this may not always be true. When phonons are coherently excited in solids\, the atoms oscillate back and forth around their equilibrium positions\, and one would expect the perturbation on electronic properties to largely cancel out. But a qualitative change might be possible with atomic motions called “chiral phonons”\, which break time-reversal symmetry and would in principle affect all properties protected by such symmetry. Chiral phonons with quantized angular momentum are simply guaranteed by multi-fold rotational symmetry\, and thus are rather common in materials and have been predicted to cause unexpected magnetic\, topological\, and transport phenomena. In this talk\, I will first briefly introduce the discovery of chiral phonons in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors\, which exhibit spin-valley locking and chiral electron-phonon coupling. I will then discuss the general properties of chiral phonons originating from time-reversal symmetry breaking\, and give an example on the optical control and the magnetic properties of chiral phonons in rare earth halides. Finally\, I will introduce quantum coherent spin-phonon coupling in 2D antiferromagnets\, leading to magnon-phonon hybridization\, nontrivial topology\, and chiral edge states. Together\, these phenomena demonstrate a new paradigm of dynamic structural-property relationship in quantum materials.\n\nBio: Dr Hanyu Zhu is an assistant professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering at Rice University. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics in Tsinghua University in China\, when he got into the field of nanomaterials. He obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Science and Technology in the University of California at Berkeley for studying electromechanics of atomically thin crystals. After postdoctoral research at Berkeley developing novel optical spectroscopy for phonons\, he started the Emerging Quantum and Ultrafast Materials Lab in 2018\, with a focus on optical control of quantum materials. He has a joint appointment in the department of Physics and Astronomy\, and is a member of the Rice Center for Quantum Materials as well as the Rice Quantum Initiative. He received the ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award in 2019 and the NSF CAREER Award in 2023.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar: Short resolutions of the diagonal and a Horrocks-type splitting criterion in Picard rank 2
DESCRIPTION:In 1964\, Horrocks proved that a vector bundle on a projective space splits as a sum of line bundles if and only if it has no intermediate cohomology. Then in 2015\, Eisenbud-Erman-Schreyer used the BGG correspondence for products of projective spaces to prove a version of this criterion under an additional hypothesis. This talk is about the key ingredient for proving a Horrocks-type splitting criterion for vector bundles over a smooth projective toric variety X of Picard rank 2: a short resolution of the diagonal sheaf consisting of finite direct sums of line bundles. I'll discuss the motivations and techniques and explain construction via a variant of Weyman's \"geometric technique.\" This is joint work with Michael Brown.\n\nThe talk will be virtual\, but we will have a watch party in our usual room. If you would like the zoom info to attend virtually instead\, email an organizer or join our mailing list.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium: Local Shimura varieties
DESCRIPTION:In the classification of unitary representations of the Lie group SL_2(R)\, the \"discrete series\" representations can be modeled on a space of L^2 functions on the upper half plane\, and there's essentially one for each integer. What if R is replaced with the field Q_p of p-adic numbers? The group SL_2(Q_p) still has a discrete series\, but it is much richer than that of SL_2(R). To study it\, one can consider a p-adic version of the upper half plane. But strangely\, the p-adic upper half plane isn't simply connected\, and to unlock the full discrete series\, one needs to study some of its finite covering spaces (the Lubin-Tate tower).\n\nAnd for p-adic groups other than SL_2(Q_p)? This talk will be an invitation to the chain of beautiful ideas leading from the Lubin-Tate tower to a much more general notion of \"local Shimura varieties\" which are implicated in the Langlands program for p-adic fields.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Distinguished Lecture. Vulnerometry: Historical Reflections on the Quest to Measure Climate Vulnerability
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will track a series of discoveries of previously unknown atmospheric forces\, made in Vienna between the 1770s and 1850s: animal magnetism\, Aereon\, and Od. I propose that these belonged to a larger category of atmospheric influences on living things whose workings were obscure yet tantalizing\, including ozone\, moonlight\, and “atmospheric electricity” (the last a new designation to distinguish it from that generated by electrical machines). \n\nThe controversies that surrounded the discoveries of these forces need to be recognized as episodes in an overlooked history: the history of investigating the interrelations of life and the atmosphere. I show how this strain of research reflected the Habsburgs’ imperial and industrial ambitions. It is a story with telling parallels in present-day attempts to study the determinants of environmental health and to measure what experts refer to as “degrees of vulnerability” to climate change.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

SUMMARY:Performance:Cowboy Junkies
DESCRIPTION:Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alternative country/blues/folk rock band. The group was formed in Toronto in 1985 by Margo Timmins (vocalist)\, Michael Timmins (songwriter\, guitarist)\, Peter Timmins (drummer) and Alan Anton (bassist). The Junkies first performed publicly at the Beverley Tavern and other clubs in Toronto’s Queen Street West\, including The Rivoli. Their 1986 debut album\, produced by Canadian producer Peter Moore\, was the blues-inspired “Whites Off Earth Now!!\,” recorded using an ambisonic microphone in the family garage. The group’s fame spread with their second album\, “The Trinity Session\,” recorded in 1987 at Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity. Their sound\, again using the ambisonic microphone\, and their mix of blues\, country\, folk\, rock and jazz earned them both critical attention and a cult following. The Los Angeles Times named the recording as one of the ten best albums of 1988. In the early 1990s Margo Timmins was named one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People. The group has continued to tour North America\, Europe\, Japan and Australia. In 2008\, they released Trinity Revisited in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original recording of The Trinity Session. These days\, Cowboy Junkies shows revisit old material in creative ways\, but they always bring new music as well.
