SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nApril 5\, 2022\n12:00 - 1:00 EST\n\nStephanie Morales is a second-year Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan's Program in Survey and Data Science. She holds a BA in Psychology and an MA in Sociology. She is interested in cross-cultural surveys\, measurement error in data collection with racial/ethnic minorities\, and adaptive survey design. \n\nAssessing Cross-Cultural Comparability of Self-Rated Health and Its Conceptualization through Web Probing\n\nSelf-rated health (SRH) is a widely used question across different fields\, as it is simple to administer yet has been shown to predict mortality. SRH asks respondents to rate their overall health typically using Likert-type response scales (i.e.\, excellent\, very good\, good\, fair\, poor). Although SRH is commonly used\, few studies have examined its conceptualization from the respondents’ point of view and even less so for differences in its conceptualization across diverse populations. We aim to assess the comparability of SRH across different cultural groups by investigating the factors that respondents consider when responding to the SRH question. We included an open-ended probe asking what respondents thought when responding to SRH in web surveys conducted in five countries: Great Britain\, Germany\, the U.S.\, Spain\, and Mexico. In the U.S.\, we targeted six racial/ethnic and linguistic groups: English-dominant Koreans\, Korean-dominant Koreans\, English-dominant Latinos\, Spanish-dominant Latinos\, non-Latino Black Americans\, and non-Latino White Americans. One novelty of our study is allowing multiple attribute codes (e.g.\, health behaviors\, illness) per respondent and tone (e.g.\, in the direction of positive or negative health or neutral) of the probing responses for each attribute\, allowing us 1) to assess respondents’ thinking process holistically and 2) to examine whether and how respondents mix attributes. Our study compares the number of reported attributes and tone by cultural groups and integrates SRH responses in the analysis. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of SRH by revealing the cognitive processes among diverse populations and is expected to shed light on its cross-cultural comparability.\n\nMichigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)\nThe University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021\, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data\, but also including social media posts\, sensor data\, and administrative records\, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research\, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.\n\nSummer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT)\nThe mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design\, implementation\, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948\, and has offered such courses every summer since.  Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 5 through July 28 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.\n\nThe Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business\, public health\, natural resources\, law\, medicine\, nursing\, social work\, and many other domains of study.

Webtoon (wept’un)\, which was coined in Korea to refer to web graphic narratives\, has been developed not only as an artistic form of comics optimized for screens in the digital era but also as a system of cultural production\, distribution\, consumption\, and participation. It has developed utilizing various potentials that the digital platform offers\, such as open solicitation\, (partial) free web/mobile distribution\, active communication between readers and producers through comment and recommendation systems\, profit from advertisement and page viewing\, transmedia production\, and the incorporation of multiple media functions. Webtoon as a new cultural medium is thus inseparable from its platform and is organically tied to its distinctive platform ecology\, which is different from those that other (global) mega platforms create. In this talk\, I discuss the ways media platforms on which the webtoon occupies a central place function and the ways webtoon’s relationship with those platforms affect the fields of other art forms.\n   \n   Heekyoung Cho is Associate Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature and Adjunct Associate Professor in Slavic at the University of Washington. She is the author of Translation’s Forgotten History: Russian Literature\, Japanese Mediation\, and the Formation of Modern Korean Literature (2016)\, and the editor of The Routledge Companion to Korean Literature (2022). Her articles discuss topics on translation and the creation of modern fiction\, translation and censorship\, serial publication\, world literature\, and webcomics. I will argue that moreover this proposal provides a systematic and practical tool for the computation of partition functions of 3d gravity\, and will describe how it elucidates the recent ensemble interpretation of semiclassical 3d gravity. Dr. Everett is a licensed Professional Engineer\; recipient of UM CEE and UM College of\nEngineering Excellence in Teaching awards\, UM CEE Professor of the Year award\, and National Science Foundation CAREER Award\; Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers\; holder of three patents\; Emergency Medical Technician\; and world rowing champion\, two-time Olympian\, and winner of the Congressional Gold Medal.\n\nRobert B. Harris Award and Lecture: Established by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering in honor of Robert B. Harris\, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan from 1947 to 1987\, who in 1954 led the establishment of the first graduate program in Construction Engineering and Management at the University of Michigan and who had a significant role in the development and advancement of the CE&M field throughout the United States and internationally.

As a quantum theory of the building blocks of matter and forces\, it has been one of the most successful theories in science. This upset to the Standard Model may point towards exciting new discoveries in particle physics in the coming years. We will discuss the Standard Model\, the crucial role of the W boson\, and how it has become the harbinger of new laws of nature.

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\n\nGenomic rearrangements\, also known as structural variations (SVs)\, are large scale alterations that changes the DNA structure. They include deletions\, duplications\, insertions\, and other forms that are accompanied by copy number changes as well as inversions\, translocations\, and other copy-neutral forms. They are an important type of variation\, affecting an order of magnitude more base pairs than single nucleotide variations (SNVs) in normal human population. In cancer\, several chromosomal translocations have been identified and subsequently became targets of successful treatments. However\, the functional impact of genomic rearrangements and their roles in treatment response are largely unexplored. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Packings and tilings of shapes have been of interest to mathematicians\, physicists\, and puzzlers for millenia. Certain shapes can pack densely to tile space in 2D or 3D. Others cannot tile space\, and thus the arrangements that allow them to pack most densely (but with packing fraction necessarily less than one) are of interest for fundamental as well as practical reasons.  At lower packing fractions than those that produce densest packings\, statistical thermodynamics permits the ordering of many shapes into periodic and aperiodic structures by self-assembly. For some shapes\, these ordered assemblies are structurally identical to the shape's (putative) densest packing\, but more interesting\, and possibly more common\, is when the assemblies and densest packings are different. DESCRIPTION:This paper studies the effect of nonlinear pricing on markups and misallocation. We develop a general equilibrium model of firms that are allowed to set a quantity-dependent pricing schedule— contrary to the typical assumption in macroeconomic models. Without the restriction to linear pricing\, markup heterogeneity is no longer a sign of misallocation. Larger firms charge higher markups\, yet the allocation of resources across firms is efficient. Further\, we point to a new source of misallocation. In general equilibrium\, high-taste consumers are allocated too much of each good\, low-taste consumers too little. When labor supply is elastic\, firms’ market power depresses aggregate labor\, but this effect is independent of the level of the aggregate markup in the economy. Using micro data from the retail sector\, we show that nonlinear pricing is prevalent and quantify the model. We find that the welfare losses from misallocation across consumers under nonlinear pricing are twice as large as those from misallocation across firms under linear pricing.

SUMMARY:Other:Photophysics of Photocatalytic and Radical Systems
DESCRIPTION:Photoredox catalysis has enabled researchers to overcome previously intractable problems in organic synthesis. The use of light to drive catalysis has allowed for more selective reactions that generate both simple and complex molecules from renewable and economical starting materials under mild conditions. The dynamics of these catalysts following photoexcitation determines their efficiency. A direct time-resolved photophysical view of reactions is essential to construct the full kinetic scheme\, observe the intermediates\, and thereby link dynamics to structure. Through the use of ultrafast broadband transient absorption and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy across a wide range of time and energy scales\, the Huxter group studies photoinduced single-electron transfer and electronic dynamics in photoredox catalytic and radical systems. These studies have revealed complex mechanisms of photoredox catalytic reactions\, including the involvement of reduced solvent as intermediates\, multiple photoproducts as well as many productive and unproductive pathways. The study of transition metal complexes has also opened new possibilities for versatile reactive pathways. In this talk\, we will present our latest research on a novel series of tripyrrindione molecules\, which possess tunable redox-active chemistry. Using ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy\, we explore the dynamics of these molecules and how they are influenced by hydrogen-bonding interactions with the solvent\, reversible antiferromagnetic coupling and by the oxidation states of the metal centers. DESCRIPTION:Join UofM student organization University Students Against Rape in creating an environment that advocates for and uplifts survivors of sexual violence.The rally portion will begin with performances by Groove UM\, the G Men and the Harmonettes. We are honored to be joined by Kyle Richards\, an advocate for bystander intervention and sexual assault prevention\, who was shot twice after interrupting an in-progress sexual assault. Following the rally\, attendees are invited and encouraged to join our student organizers in marching through UofM campus and parts of downtown Ann Arbor and taking back the night. The pre-show for the rally will begin at 6:30pm on April 5\, 2022 in the Michigan Union. The rally will begin at 7pm.
