What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. This talk analyzes methodologies employed in Japanese Yaoi/BL novels and explores their potential as post-binary feminism.\n \n Kazuko Suzuki is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M University and the author of the award-winning book\, *Divided Fates: The State\, Race\, and Korean Immigrants’ Adaptation in Japan and the United States*\, which compares adaptation patterns of three Korean diasporic groups in Japan and the United States. She also co-edited a book\, *Reconsidering Race: Social Science Perspectives on Racial Categories in the Age of Genomics*. Experiencing it can be problematic for academics\, especially those in competitive fields such as STEM and medicine. Popular media views impostor phenomenon as an individual trait experienced especially by women that could be overcome by journaling about one’s successes or achievements. Such views do not acknowledge the role of the environment’s role in propagating impostor feelings. It further marginalizes those already underrepresented and struggling for career advancement in these competitive fields: women\, members of the BIPOC community\, first-generation students\, and others. Using data from a large-scale interview study conducted in the US\, this talk addresses how unsafe academic environments and workplace violence could be related to impostor phenomenon\, with examples in STEM and medicine. This talk also highlights recent research in the field that nudges us to take a holistic view of the issue and think of this phenomenon as more than an individual trait. Please bring paper\, pencil\, your curiosity\, and questions. \n\nAbout the speaker: Devasmita Chakraverty\, PhD\, is Associate Professor at the Ravi J. Matthai Centre for Educational Innovation\, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. She has been internationally recognized as one of the most prolific publishers of peer-reviewed empirical research on impostor phenomenon. She first heard of the term in 2012 while interviewing physicians and scientists for her PhD dissertation. She was struck by the contradiction that some competent and successful people believed themselves to be otherwise. She has actively worked in this field since 2017 and has published in several peer-reviewed journals such as CBE- Life Sciences Education\; Violence and Gender\; and BMC Medical Education. Devasmita holds a PhD degree in Science Education (University of Virginia) and Master of Public Health (University of Washington). Canay and Steve McBride) DESCRIPTION:This paper studies settings where there is interest in identifying and estimating an average causal effect of a binary treatment on an outcome of interest\, under complete randomization or selection on observables assumptions. The outcome does not get immediately realized after treatment assignment\, a feature that is ubiquitous in empirical settings\, creating a time window in between the treatment and the realization of the outcome. The existence of such a time window\, in turn\, opens up the possibility of other observed endogenous actions to take place and affect the interpretation of popular parameters\, including the average treatment effect. In this context\, we study several regression-based estimands that are routinely used in empirical work\, and present five results that shed light on how to interpret them in terms of ceteris paribus effects\, indirect causal effects\, and selection terms. Our three main takeaways are the following. First\, the three most popular estimands do not satisfy what we call strong sign preservation\, in the sense these estimands may be negative even when the treatment positively affects the outcome for any possible combination of other actions. Second\, the by-far most popular estimand that ``controlls'' for the other actions in the regression does not improve upon a simple comparisons of means in the sense that negative weights multiplying relevant ceteris paribus effects become more prevalent. Finally\, while non-parametric identification of the effects we study is straightforward under our assumptions and follows from saturated regressions\, we also show that linear regressions that correctly control for the other actions by stratifying lead to estimands that always satisfy strong sign preservation. By combining data from several fields including molecular phylogenetics/phylogenomics\, comparative genomics\, biogeographic range reconstruction\, stable isotope analyses\, and microbial community sequencing to study the evolutionary history of the insects\, we are beginning to understand the drivers of speciation and the interconnectedness of life. Comparative phylogenetic analysis reveals the interconnectedness of ants and plants and that ants diversified after the rise of the angiosperms. While studies combining stable isotope analysis to infer the trophic ecology of the ants and next-generation sequencing of gut-associated bacteria of ants highlight the importance of this microbiome association in the evolution of herbivory. Microbial contributions to ants are not limited to diet enrichment and we find evidence for their role in cuticle formation. However\, this traditional approach yields minimal opportunities for dramatic advances in terms of mass efficiency and the operational size of the structure. This seminar presents our novel approach to designing future space structures based on metamaterial technologies and advanced manufacturing in space. By removing the constraints associated with launch and deployment\, we create a paradigm shift in the design of future structures and enable extended structures such as solar arrays\, antennas\, and optical systems where size is critical to performance. Specifically\, our team integrates novel dissipative metamaterials and topological polarization along with crumpled designs and enables future space structures that can be modularly assembled in space. Thus\, we can achieve large scalable structures beyond deployment limits and realize space designs that cannot be launched. This talk will cover the novel design of a 1MW solar array that is optimized for high precision and mass efficiency. We exploit crumpling for stiffness enhancement\, metadamping for quick stabilization\, and topological polarization for robustness and damage tolerance. We also demonstrate proof of the concept via 3D printing a lab-scale prototype which is tested in the PEPL vacuum chamber and vibration testing facilities at SPRL.\n\nBio: Dr. Serife Tol is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. She received her Ph.D. (2017) from Georgia Institute of Technology and her M.S. (2012) and B.S. (2009) degrees from Middle East Technical University (METU\, Ankara\, Turkey)\, all in mechanical engineering. She worked as a Test and Analysis Engineer in the Defense Systems Technologies Business Sector at ASELSAN (Turkey\, Ankara) between 2009 and 2012. They predict events via memory-based analogies even when resources are limited. The ability of biological intelligence to generalize and complete a wide range of unknown heterogeneous tasks calls for a comprehensive understanding of how networks of interactions among neurons\, glia\, and vascular systems enable human cognition. This will serve as a basis for advancing the design of artificial general intelligence (AGI). In this talk\, we introduce a series of novel mathematical tools which can help us reconstruct networks among neurons\, infer their objectives\, and identify their learning rules. \n\nTo decode the network structure from very scarce and noisy data\, we develop the first mathematical framework which identifies the emerging causal fractal memory phenomenon in the spike trains and the neural network topologies. We show that the fractional order operators governing the neuronal spiking dynamics provide insight into the topological properties of the underlying neuronal networks and improve the prediction of animal behavior during cognitive tasks. In addition to this\, we propose a variational expectation-maximization approach to mine the optical imaging of brain activity and reconstruct the neuronal network generator\, namely the weighted multifractal graph generator. Our proposed network generator inference framework can reproduce network properties\, differentiate varying structures in brain networks and chromosomal interactions\, and detect topologically associating domain regions in conformation maps of the human genome. Moreover\, we develop a multiwavelet-based neural operator in order to infer the objectives and learning rules of complex biological systems. We thus learn the operator kernel of an unknown partial differential equation (PDE) from noisy scarce data. For time-varying PDEs\, this model exhibits 2-10X higher accuracy than state-of-the-art machine learning tools.\n\nBio: Paul Bogdan is the Jack Munushian Early Career Chair and Associate Professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Southern California. It is widely accepted that the assessment and refinement of biomedical imaging technologies should be performed by objective\, i.e.\, task-based\, measures of image quality (IQ). However\, the objective evaluation of deep learning-based image formation technologies remains largely lacking\, despite the breakneck speed at which they are being developed. As such\, there is an ever-growing collection of methods whose utility and trustworthiness remains largely unknown. Moreover\, such methods have the capability to ‘hallucinate’ false structures\, which is of significant concern in medical imaging applications. In this work\, we report studies in which the performance of deep learning-based image restoration methods is objectively assessed. The performance of the ideal observer (IO) and common linear numerical observers are quantified\, and detection efficiencies are computed to assess the impact of deep learning image formation methods on signal detection performance. The numerical results indicate that\, in the cases considered\, the application of a deep image formation network can result in a loss of task-relevant information in the image\, despite improvement in traditional computer-vision metrics. We also demonstrate that traditional and objective IQ measures can vary in opposite ways as a function of network depth. These results highlight the need for the objective evaluation of IQ for deep image formation technologies and may suggest future avenues for improving the effectiveness of medical imaging applications. \n\nBio:\nDr. Mark Anastasio is the Donald Biggar Willett Professor in Engineering and the Head of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Before joining UIUC in 2019\, he was a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis\, where he established one of the nation’s first stand-alone PhD programs in imaging science. Dr. Anastasio’s research accomplishments to the fields of biomedical imaging and image science have been numerous and impactful and his general interests broadly address the computational aspects of image formation\, modern imaging science\, and applied machine learning. He has conducted research in the fields of diffraction tomography\, X-ray phase-contrast imaging\, and ultrasound tomography. He one of the world’s leading authorities on photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) and has made numerous and important contributions to development of PACT for over fifteen years. He has published over 175 peer-reviewed journal papers in leading imaging and optical science journals and was the recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to develop image reconstruction methods. These polychromatic spectacles offer a diversity of colors and scintillating delights\, though they fail to acknowledge––by their very design––how they also perpetuate historically entrenched legacies of chromophobia. This talk responds to this odd contradiction by leaping backwards in time\, to analyze the tensions and power struggles in the history of illuminated light in the American city in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries. The polemic between old world (European) whiteness and the explosive colors that mark America's twentieth-century “white imaginary” are charted through an archaeological critique of early advertising\, photography\, and the development of electric palettes for large-scale illuminated signs. By zeroing in on the “White City” at Chicago’s 1893 Columbian World’s Fair\, and New York City’s “Great White Way” in the 1910s-1930s\, I argue that a new training ground was forged for the American subject\, engendering a unique brand of spectatorship rooted in visual possession by way of spectacle-based consumption.\n\nCarolyn L. Our interventions in the study of Armenian history\, literature\, translation studies\, materiality and the visual arts can be gauged by a carefully curated set of initiatives we have undertaken that will have a long-term impact on the field. The Twelfth Annual International Graduate Student Workshop is a great opportunity to bring together a wide range of disciplines that have engaged closely or obliquely with Christian monasticism.\n\nScholars of the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East have highlighted the complexities of cultural and social life in the empire’s provinces\, yet monasticism and monastic life as a social institution remain unstudied. Monasteries have been explored as sites of state cooperation and their leaders as agents of the state\, but how can a focus on the social and economic life of monasteries critically reassess themes such as piety\, community\, and empire?\n\nThe church was a critical institution for the physical and spiritual livelihood of Armenians and other Eastern Christian communities. Monasticism existed interdependent of the church\; monks and nuns sustained the church’s labor as spiritual shepherds of their communities and served as material stewards of the land and holy spaces. Gendered aspects of monastic life\, including the protocols of sexual and spiritual discipline that shaped intimacy and religious life (e.g.\, celibacy)\, offer rich vantage points through which the social fabric of confessional communities comes into view. In the recent work of Fargues-Scholze\, there is a beautiful conjectural extension of this story to the p-adic setting. In that setting\, the role of X is played by the Fargues-Fontaine curve\, and the local systems are Galois representations. \n\nThe conjecture of Fargues-Scholze has impressive explanatory power when it comes to the local Langlands program. For instance\, it implies all cases of the Kottwitz conjecture on the cohomology of local shtuka spaces. We only know certain cases of that conjecture\, notably for the Lubin-Tate tower (Harris-Taylor). We will discuss work with Hansen and Kaletha detailing partial results on the Kottwitz conjecture. LNPs offer a way to deliver a concentrated payload. If delivered systemically\, the LNPs also protect the nucleic acids from nucleases. The rules around their preparation and mechanisms for delivery to cells and endosomal release are still in development. The seminar will describe LNP integration into a high throughput experiment to screen in vitro for immunogenic cell death interactions between microphages and target cancer cells. This paper establishes a six-way equivalence that fully characterizes the set of transformations for which the conclusions are independent of measurement units. Central to these results are the concepts of scale equivariance (that any scaling of the data can be reversed by appropriately rescaling the estimator) and scale invariance (that any scaling of the data does not affect the estimator). The equivalence result demonstrates that desirable properties such as scale-equivariant coefficient estimates\, scale-invariant t-statistics\, and scale-invariant semi-elasticities arise if and only if the transformation is a logarithmic or a power function. Power transformations thus provide a natural extension of logarithmic transformations that both preserves the essential feature of obtaining unit-independent estimates for unitless quantities of interest and is defined at zero. Popular alternatives that approximate the shape of the logarithmic function at large values\, such as adding a small positive constant before applying a logarithmic transformation or the inverse hyperbolic sine transformation\, can result in arbitrarily large semi-elasticity estimates and can change sign and statistical significance depending on the choice of measurement units\, which we highlight both theoretically and empirically. Her work over the past 50 years in the editorial world has appeared on and between the covers of publications including Life\, Newsweek\, Time\, Vanity Fair\, Rolling Stone\, National Geographic Traveler\, Sports Illustrated\, People\, Elle\, Interview\, The New Yorker. For the past 4 years she has been fighting a legal battle with the Warhol Foundation which is based on making sure that the copyright law does not become so diluted by the definition of fair use that visual artists lose the rights to their work. \nBy the early 80’s\, Goldsmith expanded her creativity to become the first ‘optic-music’ artist. Using the alias Will Powers\, she wrote and produced the album Dancing For Mental Health released on Island Records. Working with acclaimed musicians Sting\, Steve Winwood\, Todd Rundgren\, and Nile Rodgers\, her debut album won critical acclaim and the single\, “Kissing With Confidence\,” reached #3 on the British charts.
